Introduction:
Call of Duty: World at War is the latest in the series and has a total of 66 achievements, however, two of these are for zero points. Only the hardcore need apply for those as they are acquired through the online prestige system. For those merely interested in 1500 you should be able to acquire it with a bit of effort.

To get the extra 500, you will need to download Map Pack 2 and Map Pack 3 from the marketplace.

Step #1: Play through on Veteran
There is no point completing the game on any other setting so it is best to start on Veteran difficulty. Before you begin make sure you have a list of all the Death Card locations (or see the videos on the forum) so that you can find them as you go along. This is not vital but it will help keep the number of replays to a minimum. Also, be aware that each level has a specific task associated with it (i.e. downing planes on the Blackcats mission). You can try to get these as you go along but it may be worth leaving them for now. You should also try to complete a level on Veteran without dying; the easiest of which is 'Blood and Iron' as you can often retreat from enemies and fire upon them from a distance without them shooting back. If you get hit just retreat and heal then move forward. Take your time with each level and you should be fine, doing this will net you all of the level completion achievements as well as the two game completion ones.

Step #2: Individual level achievements
Now that you have cleared the game you can just select the specific levels to finish off any tasks you missed. The benefit of this is that you can change the difficulty to recruit and make your life a lot easier. I would recommend this method for the following achievements in particular: Gunslinger, Ruthless, Sum of all Zeros, Rough Economy and Kamikaze (requires at least Regular difficulty). You can also go back into individual levels to find any Death Cards you may have missed – as soon as you pick up the card you can just Save and Quit then move onto the next level.

Step #3: Online
The online achievements (barring the zero point ones) are really easy and can be done at any point. Just playing and completing (i.e. reaching the end of the level) a Competitive and Co-operative campaign game will get you most of the points. You can’t do either of these in local play but you can just create a match on Semper Fi (the first and shortest level) then wait for someone to join as you only need two people. For the Competitive win you will need to have at least four players AND finish with the best score in the game. I would suggest finding 3 boosting partners to make things easier.

Step #4: Nazi Zombies
There are a total of 20 Nazi Zombie achievements worth 500. 10 achievements are on Shi No Numa (Map Pack 2) and 10 achievements are on Der Reise (Map Pack 3). Again, to get the additional 500, you must have Map Pack 2 and Map Pack 3. The only achievements you may have a hard time on are Big Baller and possibly Perkoholics Anonymous, the rest are pretty easy. All of them can be done solo or co-op, but co-op is obviously easier. All of them can be done offline or online.

Conclusion:
The Veteran mode is pretty tough but not insurmountable and playing through it will net you pretty much everything on offer. You can then just level select to finish off any of the mission specific tasks and the online achievements can be polished off in about an hour if you have some partners. The Nazi Zombie achievements can be done in a few hours if you can find some good co-op partners to play with. A fairly straightforward list.

    (5)

During Little Resistance and Breaking Point, you will have the opportunity to call in a rocket strike by pressing . A yellow beam will appear, this signifies where the rockets will hit. Press when you are happy with your target. I recommend waiting until Breaking Point to get this achievement. When you have access to the rocket strike, Roebuck will tell you to direct the rockets towards the buildings. Rather than aiming towards the buildings, aim towards the Japanese soldiers that approach you.

After, you and you your fellow soldiers will head towards the airfield. During this journey, you will see a large patch of thick grass on the right of the path. At the beginning of Vendetta, you will meet up with Sgt. Reznov and he will hand you his Sniper Rifle. He will instruct you to take out General Amsel’s henchmen. When he shouts “Now” you may begin sniping. Don’t forget, you’re not allowed to reload.

At the end of Vendetta you will be required to kill General Amsel as he flees. For this achievement, you must kill him with a pistol. You can find a pistol on a nearby table after killing the sniper in the large building towards the beginning of the level. Turn around after killing the sniper and you’ll see the pistol on the table that is closest to the gap. Keep the pistol with you until you see Amsel running from the building with the banners. Snipe his henchmen and the take out your pistol; lead your shots and hopefully you’ll kill him. If he manages to get in the car, snipe the driver to prevent him from driving away.

  • Complete a mission using only the flamethrower. Melee, grenades & explosives are OK. (Solo or co-op)

    (14)

I recommend you play Burn ‘em Out on Recruit difficulty when going for this achievement primarily because you start the level with the Flamethrower. Use your grenades wisely and be sure to not let the Flamethrower overheat. Also, take cover if you are wounded and let your health regenerate. Don’t be foolish like me and attempt this on Hardened.

  • Complete 'Relentless' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

For this achievement, you must complete the seventh level of the single player campaign, Relentless on Veteran difficulty. Refer to “Bearing the Burden” for advice on how to beat Veteran.

  • Destroy all towers and bunkers in 'Blood and Iron'. (Solo or co-op)

    (11)

During Blood and Iron, you will see a number of water towers and bunkers throughout the level. You must destroy all of the water towers and all of the bunkers for the achievement. Follow the video below for the locations of all water towers and bunkers.

    Towers:
    1. Red water tower just after you turn the first corner.
    2. Red water tower directly behind the first water tower.
    3. To the left of the far-left artillery gun.
    4. To the right of the far-right artillery gun, in between the two bunkers.
    5. Behind the right bunker.
    6. To the far right, you will see it to the left of a tank sitting on the hill.
    7. Before you turn right to destroy the Radio Tower you will see some Russian soldiers running across a field, look into the distance and you will see a red water tower.
    8. To the left of the Radio Tower.
    9. To the right of the Radio Tower.
    10. Behind the left side of the big bunker.
    11. To the east of the big bunker.
    12. As you come over the hill you will see it to the left of the trenches with a tank in the middle.
    13. To the right of the previously mentioned tank.
    14. As the planes fly over they destroy this one but just check they do.
    15. The furthest right you can go, north on your compass, next to some concrete blocks.
    16. Follow the concrete blocks down to the left, you should see it as you drive into the train station.

    Bunkers:
    1. To the right of the far-right artillery gun.
    2. To the right of Tower #4.
    3. As you turn right in to the field with the Radio Tower look to the left a little bit, there is a bunker slightly hidden in the trees. You will see rockets fly at you from the bunker.
    4. You can't miss it as you come up the hill. There are two parts to it, left and right, make sure you destroy both!

  • Complete 'Ring of Steel' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

For this achievement, you must complete the ninth level of the single player campaign, Ring of Steel on Veteran difficulty. Refer to “Bearing the Burden” for advice on how to beat Veteran.

  • Kill 15 enemies while mounted on a tank in 'Ring of Steel'. (Solo or co-op)

    (10)

On 'Ring of Steel', after coming out of the Asylum you should see two tanks. Travel to the one on the far-right and mount the turret by pressing . At this point, spam your weapons at German soldiers, and this should unlock shortly before the screen goes dark to signify the end.

  • Complete 'Eviction' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

For this achievement, you must complete the tenth level of the single player campaign, Eviction on Veteran difficulty. Refer to “Bearing the Burden” for advice on how to beat Veteran.

  • Kill 10 enemies while the lights are out in the subway in 'Eviction'. (Solo or co-op)

    (2)

On 'Eviction' there will be parts in the Subway that are not lit by the lighting on the ceiling. Note that you cannot shoot the lights to disable them, but rather wait for explosions to break the power source. At this point, shoot/melee as many German soldiers you can while the lights are out. There are around three of these chances. You should get this near the end of the subway, where you go into the water.

  • Complete 'Black Cats' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

For this achievement, you must complete the eleventh level of the single player campaign, Black Cats on Veteran difficulty. Refer to “Bearing the Burden” for advice on how to beat Veteran.

  • Down 45 Japanese Zeros in 'Black Cats'. (Solo only)

Because the guns on your planes aren't very accurate, this makes killing enemy planes a lot harder. Japanese aircraft are called 'Zeros' and most of them are called out to you by your flight operator. Near the start of the Zero raid, there will be quite a lot of aircraft. You should be able to rack off around 10 kills here. During the mission, concentrate on the aircraft and not on survivors. Also try to take out the PT boats as quickly as possible when there are no Zeros around. With luck, you should be able to get this by the end of the mission.

  • In 'Black Cats', blast out all of the spot lights in the Japanese cargo convoy. (Solo only)

On each cargo ship there will be two large searchlights (front and end). Use the guns to destroy these searchlights on all three cargo ships and this achievement will unlock.

  • Complete 'Blowtorch & Corkscrew' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

For this achievement, you must complete the twelfth level of the single player campaign, Blowtorch & Corkscrew on Veteran difficulty. Refer to “Bearing the Burden” for advice on how to beat Veteran.

  • Complete 'Breaking Point' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

For this achievement, you must complete the thirteenth level of the single player campaign, Breaking Point on Veteran difficulty. Refer to “Bearing the Burden” for advice on how to beat Veteran.

  • Kill 8 Japanese with thrown mortars in 'Breaking Point'. (Solo or co-op)

    (3)

On 'Breaking Point', you will come across improvised mortars on crates. Press to pick one up and throw it into a mortar pit or on an enemy soldier just like you would a grenade. Be careful not to throw them too close to you as they do have a large explosive capability.

  • In the final battle for Okinawa, save Sergeant Roebuck. (Solo or co-op)

    (5)

On 'Breaking Point', after going up the last building and Roebuck kicks down the door to the supply drop area, you will see three 'surrendering' Japanese soldiers. Petrosky and Roebuck will go over to them and your weapon will be lowered. Stay back though, as the Japanese soldiers turn out to be suicide bombers. Look at the soldiers near Roebuck and shoot both of them when your gun returns.

  • Complete 'Heart of the Reich' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

Refer to 'Bearing the Burden' for tips. For this achievement, you must complete the fourteenth level of the single player campaign, Heart of the Reich on Veteran difficulty. Refer to “Bearing the Burden” for advice on how to beat Veteran.

  • Complete 'Downfall' on Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

Veteran difficulty is harder then CoD4 but easier (in some places) then CoD2. The first few levels (Semper Fi, Little Resistance, etc) are easy, but the last couple of extremely difficult. As a general 'Veteran surviving' guide, follow:

    1. Patience is a virtue. But don't be to patient! Never enter a battle unless you have other soldiers with you. They will make your life a lot easier. Some places have enemies that infinitely spawn, so here you will have the move up to stop the influx of enemy soldiers. Others, you just need to kill every soldier. These are the ones you need to be patient on. Make sure every last soldier is dead before moving on.

    2. CoD: World at War has been referred to as CoD: Grenades at War. True, true... It is literally raining with grenades on Veteran, as if the German/Japanese soldiers have the Catch skull on from Halo 3. If you see the 'RB to throw back' signal come up on your screen, PRESS IT! Grenades take a while to detonate in the campaign.

    3. Smoke grenades, although having no lethal capabilites, will make life a lot easier. Especially with MG nests. You start with 4, with ample amounts of them around you. Don't spam them however, only use them against heavily fortified positions where you can flank them or against MG turrets.

    4. Being prone and crouching is a very big part of running this game on Veteran. Chances are, most of the cover you find will be smaller then your standing height. So go prone/crouch. This will make you a smaller target, thus harder the hit, and in turn you have less deaths.

    5. Treat Veteran difficulty like Realistic in Rainbow Six. Cover! Cover! Stay in cover at all times. Make sure this is cover like cement walls or rocks, because enemies can still shoot through flimsy wooden walls (It's the Call of Duty 4 engine, remember?). And remember, if you want to help out your teammates, peak out on the side while prone or over the top and shoot a single burst on a single guy. Go back down and reload, then rinse and repeat.

  • Kill 3 enemies with a single bullet. (Solo or co-op)

    (18)

On 'Vendetta' after you are meant to sneak away after taking your prey (Amsel's henchmen), climb out with Reznov but stay in the open. You will have over 20 guards to take down and hopefully you will get this. One theory suggests that on Recruit you will take less damage but do less damage, and on Veteran you will take more damage and do more damage.

  • Survive a Banzai attack. (Solo only)

While playing as the Americans, you will encounter Banzai soldiers. They are covered in leaves and charge towards you with a bayonet, you can easily recognise them as they shout “BANZAI” when they come out of hiding. Rather than shooting them, let one of them approach you. You will be forced on to the ground and the Banzai soldier will attempt to stick his bayonet into your chest. When the instruction pops up, quickly click the , you will kill the Banzai soldier instead of him killing you and the achievement will unlock.

  • Take out a Japanese soldier while he is lying in wait in the grass. (Solo or co-op)

    (4)

During Blowtorch and Corkscrew, there are many Japanese soliders lying in wait in the grass. Throw a random grenade and you should be able to get this. In the part before crossing the path up the hill, there will be 5 or 6 hidden soldiers next to a large rock formation. Throw a grenade in there and you will kill one.

  • Collect all Death Cards in the game. (Solo only)

Locations of every Death Card is shown in the following videos:

  • Complete any level on Regular difficulty or higher using only melee and grenades. (Solo only)

Semper Fi on Regular is the perfect level for this achievement. Semper Fi is quite short and easy to rush through. Make use of your knife, grenades, smoke grenades and most importantly, team mates. Although they seem useless, they do take out a fair few enemies. Let them do the killing.

  • On Hardened or Veteran difficulty, complete a level without dying. (Solo only)

Easiest done on Blood & Iron or Little Resistance on Hardened difficulty. Be careful and treat the mission like its on Veteran difficulty.

  • When staring into the face of adversity, show courage and persevere.

    (16)

For this achievement, you must die 20 times. You’ll probably get it while playing through the campaign on Veteran. If not, simply load up a level and get yourself killed by the enemy. Repeat this until the achievement unlocks.

  • Complete the game on any difficulty. (Solo only)

This achievement is awarded for completing the single player campaign on any difficulty. Once you complete the final level, Downfall, the achievement will unlock.

  • Complete the game on Hardened or Veteran difficulty. (Solo only)

You will get this achievement in the same place as War Hero so long as the difficulty is set to Hardened or Veteran. If your first playthrough is on Hardened or Veteran, you will receive War Hero and Hardened War Hero at the same time.

  • Complete a match in Campaign Co-Op mode over Xbox LIVE. (Online co-op only)

You will get this achievement when you complete one level of the co-op campaign. You must play on LIVE for this achievement, Local and System Link won’t give you the achievement. To access co-op campaign, simply select co-op campaign from the main menu and then select the level and difficulty. If you want to get this achievement quickly, play Semper Fi on Recruit.

  • Complete a match in Competitive Co-Op mode over Xbox LIVE. (Online co-op only)

Exactly the same as Get Your Left Foot Wet, but you must play on Competitive co-op. On competitive co-op, there is a scoring system which determines the positions of players at the end of the game. There’s no need to win the game, just finish it and this achievement is yours.

  • Complete a 4-player Competitive Co-Op match in 1st place over Xbox LIVE. (Online co-op only)

Come first in any competitive Co-Op match that has 4 players. Set up a party of friends and get them to let you do most of the work (completing objectives, killing, etc). Try to kill as many people as you can quickly to get the multiplier bonus.

Secret achievements

  • You achieved the first level of Prestige. Only 9 more to go.

    See "Go Get Some Sun."

  • You achieved the highest level in the game. Time to go outside and find some things to do...

Treyarch has confirmed that these two Secret achievements (both worth 0 points) are ones related to going through Prestige mode. Only for the ones who have too much time (well, the 10th one is).

DLC: Map Pack 2 (Store Link)

There are 10 achievements with a total of 250 points

  • Reach round 15 in Nazi Zombies without getting revived. (Map Pack 2 only)

You must reach level 15 without being downed by the zombies. See "Big Baller" for best strategy.

  • Repair 200 window boards in a single game. (Map Pack 2 only)

    (15)

    This can be done offline.

Load up a single player game, kill every zombie in the first round until there is one left outside a window. Allow him to rip one board off the window, replace, rinse and repeat. Should take no longer than 10 minutes.

  • Kill no more than one zombie with a nuke. (Map Pack 2 only)

    (4)

    This can be done offline.

Easiest done with 2 players, start a new game and allow the zombies to enter, kill them until you get a nuke, make sure there are no other zombies except and pick up the nuke. Easiest done if the nuke spawns at the the end of the round.

Also if you have killed everyone and the last guy had a nuke, pick it up, you will get 0 kills but the achievement will still unlock.

  • Earn 75,000 points in a single Nazi Zombie game. (Map Pack 2 only)

    (59)

There are 3 different strategies that work for this achievement:

    The Four Player Strategy

    The Morris Method

    The Vandz Method

To anyone still having difficulties with using the solo strategy, I found using the Vandz method for the dogs to be extremely easy, then using a Thompson with the Morris method. I was able to get over 75000 by round 28.

  • Have all four perks simultaneously active in a game of Nazi Zombies. (Map Pack 2 only)

You will obtain this when you have all four perks active at the same time use this strategy to earn this achievement.

    Shi No Numa Strategy

  • Get 10 consecutive zombie melee kills before Insta-Kill expires. (Map Pack 2 only)

    (3)

    This can be done offline.

You can either repeat the process used for "Weapon of Minor Destruction" or gain it on the way to 75k, see "Big Baller" for strategies.

  • Kill at least one zombie with three different traps in a single round. (Map Pack 2 only)

    (11)

This can be done with 3 or more players, one player must activate 3 traps in the same round. Have one player save up 3000 to activate each trap, have the other players open the doors and gates for both the storage and fishing hut. Start at either fishing hut or storage, at the start of a new round wait for a zombie to arrive activate the electrical fence. Once that is over run through to the flogger, have your team mates cover you while you wait for a zombie to flog, once you have him activate it and run to the last house either the fishing hut or storage.

Which ever one you haven't been to yet, wait for a zombie and then activate the electrical fence. Easily done between level 5 - 10. If the other players in the game want the achievement, you should run back to the first house and start again when a new round starts.

  • Kill 200 zombies in a single game. (Map Pack 2 only)

    (2)

    See "Deadhead" for more info.

  • Get 150 zombie headshots in a single game. (Map Pack 2 only)

    (9)

You will get his easily when you are attempting the 75k run. Use the strategies listed in the "Big Baller" description.

Try to get as many headshots as possible in the earlier rounds.

Secret achievements

  • Must have been a wrong number.

    (30)

This can be done offline. For this you must go to the Comm Room and do this:

DLC: Map Pack 3 (Store Link)

There are 10 achievements with a total of 250 points

  • Open all doors in the map. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (5)

For this one, you must open every single door on the map. There are a total of 9 doors worth a total of around 8250 points. I recommend turning one zombie into a crawler by throwing a cocktail at him, or by cooking a frag grenade and throwing it at his legs, then open all the doors you haven't opened yet.

  • Use the Monkey Bomb. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (4)

For this one, you just simply have to use the Monkey Bomb once. You will get it from the Mystery Box. Whenever get the Monkey Bomb from the Mystery Box you will have three Monkey Bombs. You just have to use one. To use a Monkey Bomb, you must press , you can hold it down, and you won't throw it. It's just like throwing any other special grenade, except, you know, it's a monkey.

Once you throw it, it will start making a lot of noise. It lures the zombies towards it so if you are surrounded it would be ideal to throw it then. After a few seconds, it will blow up, killing any zombies around it, remember sometimes it won't kill all the zombies surrounding it, so just be prepared.

  • Upgrade any weapon in Pack A Punch. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (1)

For this achievement, you must upgrade any one weapon from the Pack A Punch machine. In order to have access to the Pack A Punch, you must link all three teleporters to the mainframe. I recommend having one person stay at the mainframe and have the others run around to the link teleporters to get the clock started. Once you have all three teleporters linked to the mainframe the Pack A Punch will be available. To upgrade a weapon, walk up to the Pack A Punch and press and hold . It costs 5000 points to upgrade a weapon. It is pricey, but it is well worth your money.

  • Use the teleporter 8 times. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (4)

To get this one, you have to use the teleporter 8 times. It must be done in one game. It can be any of the three teleporters, whichever one you prefer. I tend to like the teleporter in the back by the bowie knife, but it's all just a matter of opinion. It costs 1500 points to use teleporter, once you do it will bring you back to the mainframe.

Any time you teleport you must press and hold , when you get to the mainframe something special will appear in front of the stairs. It could be a Max Ammo, Nuke, Carpenter, etc. I recommend saving a lot of points, around 12000 to be precise and cause a zombie to crawl. Then go to a teleporter and keep teleporting to the mainframe and walking back to the teleporter, it will take a while though. If you have over 12000 points, you will be fine.

There is also another option, it may be easier for some people. If you are in the teleporter when it is linked, you get a ride. This does count toward the eight times. So if you ride in all three of them, you would only have to do five others.

  • Kill 40 zombies with the bowie knife. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (9)

This achievement is fairly straight forward as your goal is to kill 40 zombies with the bowie knife. Your going to need to earn 3000 points before you can pick up the knife from the weapons upgrade. Once you pick the knife up it just replaces your current knife and is used in the same way. You may want to get the Juggernaut perk just in case you get hit by a zombie, the knife will allow you to pull insta-kills on any zombies you swing at. This must be done in a single game.

  • Link all teleport pads before round 7. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (2)

This isn't as hard as it sounds. It can be done on round seven but no later. There are 3 teleport pads, two are worth 1250 points and one is worth 750 points. This is probably done easiest with four people so there is a bigger combination of points to use.

Once you have enough to open all three doors, have one person stay in the mainframe while everyone else links them. You should be able to get this fairly easy without to much effort.

  • Obtain the Ray Gun, DG-2, and Monkey Bomb at the same time. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (31)

This achievement is mostly luck based, you need to have the Ray Gun, Monkey Bomb and DG-2 in your possession at the same time. I suggest you earn a great deal of points, 20,000 should be plenty, go to the mystery box and keep paying the box until the weapons show up. You can always wait until the end of the round and leave one zombie crawling to give yourself a bit more time to cycle the box.

If you don't manage to get this the first couple of attempts keep at it while earning points.

  • Survive until round 20 without buying a single Perk. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (37)

This is the hardest achievement to earn once the waves increase in difficulty. It doesn't matter if your team mates you perks but you cannot use any. You can play the game as you would normally but you must not buy any of these perks:

    • Juggernog (Juggernaut)
    • Quick Revive Soda (Quick Revive)
    • Speed Cola (Sleight of Hand)
    • Double Tap Root Beer (Double Tap)

You can try the following methods to get through the waves or try the other two methods which follow below. These may not work for you, but you may be able to adapt them to your play style and get through the waves at your own pace.

  • Upgrade 5 weapons at the Pack a Punch Machine. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (14)

For this one, you must upgrade 5 weapons from the Pack A Punch machine. This must be done in one game. In order to activate the Pack A Punch you must first link all three teleporters to the mainframe. It costs 5000 points to upgrade one weapon, it will cost a total of 25,000 points to get this.

That is not including points to buy the weapon itself or to open doors. You can use one of your own methods or one of the methods described above to get enough points. You need to buy Juggernog and Speed Cola, the rest of the perks are optional.

  • Activate the Fly Trap. (Map Pack 3 only)

    (8)

This is an easter egg hidden in the map, take any of the guns you have and upgrade it using the Pack A Punch Machine. Any scoped weapon will make this easier but it can be done with any weapon. Upgrade the weapon and head to the left of the main area where you start and through the door. Turn left again look through the crack in the fence. You will see a panel at a distance, shoot the panel and the achievement will unlock.
