Dead Island

Dead Island Achievements

There and back again

Explore the entire island.

There are 72 unique points required for this achievement. You'll want to explore every area thoroughly as it seems some buildings in an area may count as a location by themselves, or what appears to be one area may be separate into a few (such as the interior of the hotel). To see if you're on track, you should have 18 at the end of Act 1, 45 at the end of Act 2 and then 57 at the end of Act 3. Make sure you have 57/72 locations before the "point of no return" (the game warns you when this occurs) as there are 15 locations to find in the prison before the game ends.

Note: If you have 71/72 locations before the patch released on September 14th, you will need to use this trick to reset your achievement data, because the patch upped everyone's count to 72/72 but did NOT unlock the achievement. Be warned that ALL your achievement data will reset, not just this one! I would suggest getting every other achievement in the game first. Your save files will not be affected by the trick. If you had less than 71/72 before the patch, you won't need to do anything and it should work fine when you reach the last location in the prison. If you started the game with the patch in place, you're also good there.

Commonly missed locations:

  • Southwestern Moresby: There is a fenced in warehouse, as well as the beach directly west of it.
  • Southern Moresby: The boat on the shore along the bottom of the map.
  • Northern Jungle: There are two small villages up there.

@5: Not exactly true...

It's a reference to Tolkien's book "The Hobbit", whose full title actually is "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again". It being mentioned in The Lord of The Rings is a reference itself. ;-)

Damn, I love to throw around nerd knowledge noone ever needs... Now, how do I tie my laces again?!

Actually the referecnce still could be to lord of the rings. If the dev(s) who made this one didn't read the Hobbit and only saw the movies (like me) Then it would be LotR and not the hobbit.

so half an hour to go from one side to the other? anyone know how long it takes you in fallout 3 or new vegas (so that I have some basis for comparison)?

Friday, July 29, 2011 @ 05:38:18 PM

That's half an hour without Zombies. I'd imagine that it could be much longer with the Zombies all over the place, taking time to kill, forcing you to find somewhere to stop and heal, and such. Also, getting from one end to the other isn't exploring the whole island; I imagine this is more like Far Cry 2's 'explore everywhere' achievement.

I just wanted to know how long it takes you to get from one side to the other in either fallout game to have a reference for the size of the island. I'm not worried about time, but how big the map is. The bigger the map, the more hours of play I'll get out of it, and the more its actually worth $60. If its a relatively small map, I'll probably wait and get it when it drops to $40.

X360A got to try the game out, and they said in ten minuted they'd discovered something like a tenth of the island.

Fair enough, I attempted to slyly avoid actually answering your question on account of the fact that I didn't really know the answer. I've played Fallout, but never walked from one side of the map to the other. I don't think I ever even finished the game, so..

Sunday, July 31, 2011 @ 11:03:06 AM

It's good to see a Tolkien reference that isn't just about the ring.
Now I want to modify a sword to act like Sting, warning when zombies approach and making an utter undead mess when they are in range.

Oh, and I have no idea how big Fallout is from side to side either. I'm afraid that I spent too much time playing and enjoying the game to care. I've gone through it almost in its entirety four times. Same with Oblivion and working on New Vegas.
A sandbox game should never be huge simply for the sake of being huge. The world needs to have life, emotion, and character throughout or it is no better than creating an open zone without thought. That's not pertaining to this game exactly, it's more of a general statement.

Here's hoping this exploration will be enjoyable. :)

I don't think so. I got the 'discover all locations' trophy (yes I played it on the PS3) in Red Dead Redemption simply by buying all the maps that reveal the lands locations to you.
Now I doubt there'll be something like that in this game (being able to buy maps that unveil the lay of the land) I doubt you have to set foot in every nook and cranny of the map to unlock this achievement.
If it's like the one in Fallout 3 though, then that could be very time consuming.

For those of you great literary minds out there: this is an ” in-story” reference to Bilbo's titling of his own chronicle of his adventures in ” The Hobbit.” At the end this is his title to the book he wrote.

I wish the locations were named, like in a fallout game. That way I could find a list and check them off as I explore. When I get down to only a few locations left that would be very useful. I know the green on the map changes to color as you discover places but still.

yeah i just got this achievement too. i don't know if it was the patch but the two
last places i got were on runthrough #2 In the jungle. If you look at the map there
is a town all the way to the north which can be accessed by doing the Jason Vorhees
easteregg and head up the hill to the right of the Vorhee's house(just north of the
bridge to far sidequest) from there head all the way north to the village across the
big broken road. Also the jungle village is directly east of the vorhee's house. Sorry
confusing I know. just duck under the broken wood fence to get in. confusing, i
know but maybe this can help a few people

Ok so in-game (the pop up that happens on screen when you get to a new area) says "71/72" But if I go the the "Personal Statistics" option it says ive explored 100% of the areas and also under The Achievements option it says "There and back again 72/72" But the achievement hasnt unlocked. Also the Patch for the game went life here an hour or two ago in the UK and it DIDNT fix the problem, still achievement-less *sad puppy eyes* :( oh on a different off-topic note me and my friend after installing the patch are now UNABLE to use med-kits from the Inventory menu even though the "X-Use" option is still there. You now have to equip med packs to your weapon ring to use them.

Basically, I would not play this game atm if you have on xbox. You can not hold more then 1000 items of like Olander, or other stuff, and it WILL corrupt your save. Techland rushed to get the PC version working great, seeing as they are already on version 1.25, but xbox is still running on 1.1.0, wtf is that shit. Dont realease a fucking game KNOWING it has a shit load of problems. They worried more about release date and less aabout the players. Level 46 Logan 40+ hours lost cause some incompent fucking idiot at Techland wrote the wrong script and undersized a file. Great fucking job.

Hey everyone. Need some advice. I am at the Mowen boat portion when you're returning to the city to get supplies prior to heading to the prison.

My understanding is: 1) There are 15 locations at the prison
2) Everyone has a different opinion regarding whether or not this achievement is actually obtainable.

My request: Are there any suggestions as to places I should check prior to just going to every damn location and hunting down the 2 that I need BEFORE heading to the prison?

for a few days i had 71/72 aswell, and i dint know were to look, after a discussion with an friend who had the same 71/72 and dint went to the airplane (in act 3) we went there and his achievement dint pop while when i went there i had an "progress point"
so we started to find all "green area's" on the map and once we cleared all green area's it poped for both of us so my guess is its not realy the locations but more howmuch % of the green area's cleared.
jope it was helpfull for most of you having trouble getting last points.

Well I wrote them a e-mail and here is the response they sent (too bad I am 72 of 71 this must just be their generic response since I read the same e-mail on a different forum;

Dear Customer,

thank you for your inquiry.

A lot of people are missing the upstairs area in the prison. If it's not that
and if you are 100% sure that you've visited all locations already, then this
achievement could be glitched. Apparently this happens if you had already
visited 71/72 locations with game version 1.0.0
The developers told us that they'll fix it through a patch for all the people
whose achievement is glitched.
We apologize for the inconveniences caused.

Best regards

What to to guys go on to google and type in Dead Island map, then check you're in-game map, if the areas are blacked out that means you haven't been there, i found an easier way to find out, time consuming but do-able, ok what to do is go the either corner of the map, and make you're way around the edges of it (if possible) then close in on the inner circle of the map, alot longer method, but should work, but if you can't be bothered stick to the first one that should give you guys a hand :)

F-Deep Silver... This was the only chevo I needed for 100% - and it was glitched - I was 72 of 72 and on the stats page 100% of the territories explored. I had the pre-order and never got to use my code because they pushed it back so they could fix a glitchy game that never should have be released in the 1st place... greedy company... test your shit before you push it on us... what a shame I really liked the game just not all of the issues with it that have not even been addressed in the 1st month.. worst $60 I have ever spent, glad I just traded it for Gears 3.

Is there any way to get the achievement is the gas station in Moresby was the last location you found. I know that the gas station was the glitched location that the idiots at deep silver decided to count twice and because i found it last my counter is at 72 and i have 100% zones but still no achievement. So i just want to know if there is a way to reset the counter or do anything to help get the achievement.

@150 i agree completely accept that because of the idiot consumer if they had pushed back the release date most people complaining about how screwed up the game is would be complaining how deep silver sucks for pushing back the release of a game they've been waiting all year to play. Still in order to please a couple of morons they've pissed off a majority of the players.

Monday, October 10, 2011 @ 03:15:23 PM

So I now understand why the achievement is still glitched even if you have all 72 locations. Because they counted the gas station twice there are really only 71 locations and after the patch they made it so that if you found the gas station exited the game and then continued it would count it twice.
The problem is that if you find the gas station last (like me) or you find the gas station and then beat the game, going through the prison to the end, and find all locations before exiting the game it will also glitch (happened to my friend). I'm pretty sure this is because the achievement only pops up when you "discover" a final location.
So because the gas station is found last, or if you beat the game after finding the gas station without exiting first, when you continue the game the lo

So you can find 57 places before the Prison.

After getting rid of just about all the green in the jungle/lab/resort, and knowing ide done 15 in the prison. I knew it had to be in the city, so i just looked EVERYWHERE. Out of pure chance i decided to do the mission where you have to kill everything in the cemetary. It popped as soon as i walked in there! God i was happy! It be seem obvious, but theres no reason to go in there other than to do that mission.

What I found most annoying about this achievement isnt having to look and find all 72 places, but that once u beat the game there is no chapter replay option so u have to go back thru the game to find those remaining pesky places. I found a neat little trick to helping with it, I had made a back up save just in case somethin happened. And luckily I did cuz I needed it. I just went back on the other save, it still registers the other places youve found from your other save. But will unlock the remaining ones once you've found them. Hope this helps somebody. Cuz u can go to the prison and have ur save to look for the places. That way u can complete the game and not worry about the places.

There are a lot of places you gather when you do goto the prisoin. I forgot the "magic number" needed to get this before heading to the prision, but 56 is darn near close to it if not exactly it. Just goto prision when you are done questing and grinding; worse comes to worse you beat the game, start new game + (so the answer your other question is yes) and go on from there. You start at the hut where you first meet other survivors and Sinimoie.

There is 15 locations to find in the prison, but if you're at the mission to go to the prison make.a back up save and continue on if u want to beat the game. I've confirmed that if u have a back up save, the game will register the locations you've found in the prison, and on the other save u have the whole island still available to u without having to go thru the whole game again. U can find those last remaining ones.

Okay, I noticed a lot of people were having issues with this one. First in the city of Moresby on the south western corner there is a boat, a very small one, but if you walk near it it should count as a location. That was my final location after going through every inch of the dead island world and played through it 5 times now. Got all the Achievements.

I was able to get this one but I've heard people are having lots of problems with it glitching.

This may have been a result of the most recent patch, but it seems like the overall numerical requirements for each Act have changed slightly. I believe there is one less location that will register in Moesby, and possibly one more that will click in the Prison. I ran around the city like a crazy person on account of me being at 44 locations at the end of Act II, and after deciding to forget the achievement itself, I continued through to the end of my first playthrough.

As I was ascending one last set of steps before the final confrontation, the achievement popped. My apologies in advance if this was an isolated incident, but this is how it happened for me.

gah this achivement is soo annoying, why cant it tell you where you have fully explored and the place you have not?! it doesnt have to tell you where the missing spot(s) are but seriously would help, been through the story at least twice and done every side quests but still at 71/72 :@ most of my map area is all clear but with a few green spots which you cannot reach unless going out the map... any suggestions?

My friend and I played last night and I got the achievement right at the last location (the long hallway in the Prison before the roof.) My friend had always been 1 location behind me and we had given up trying to work out which one it was. He died in the final hallway and respawned at the beginning moved forward a few feet and then got the achievement eventhough he had alreadys discovered the location seconds before.

this is the stupidest fucking achievement, im at 56/57 and have looked EVERYWHERE

makes me very bitter considering they tell you how many locations you have, and by 'they tell you' i mean you have to press start/extras/achievements and then see, very stupid. at least fable 3 etc will say 4/5 areas found

this is retarded

I've put in a good 50 hours into my 1st play through. I still haven't finished the campaign, and I am only at about 55/72. I know I still have the prison left. But I have no clue on were else to go.

@202...well a week has gone by so I'll assume you are moving forward with the game. When in Moresby, make sure you explore the southern part of the map along the coast/harbor. There are 2 or 3 areas that count as "locations"
If you follow the main Quest and do all the "sidequests" you'll uncover all the other locations.
When you get to the Jungle, make sure you explore the North/Northwest section of the map. There's an abandoned village and a human occuppied village that count as "locations". Important, do all side quests to insure you cover all other 'locations'. If you follow the main quest story lines in the Jungle and then the Prison you will uncover the balance of the 'locations' that count toward this achievement.
Btw, when you reach the Jungle, you can "fast travel" back to More

There are several ways that this problem could have been prevented by the developers. They could have added a checklist or tested the achievements to name a few. I'm glad I only rented this game and didn't buy it!

Monday, July 16, 2012 @ 10:08:21 PM

(Reference to above post) They could have also made it so that you only had to find, say, 95 percent of all the locations instead of 100 percent.

Sunday, September 02, 2012 @ 05:49:29 PM

@213 You don't have to buy any dlc to get this. The patch will be with your latest update/download of the game. I'm on 70/72 on second playthrough. Will explore south part of moresby map plus find the hidden village and bits on north and Northwest of the jungle. Hopefully that'll fix it for me.

Thx 214... I wanted to check, I may just rent it from redbox or get a friend to buy it so I can borrow it.

Sadly it won't count on Xbox live as 100% since DLC has come out... I hate that if you have not purchased the DLC. 100% of the possible achievements should count as 100% :D just saying.

Got this on my second run,as long as you complete all side quests (which I recommend doing anyway to get the most out of the game an get some sweet weapons/mods) you should get all areas. I missed the village at the top Of the jungle which popped the achievement for me.

If you finish the game with 70/72, like I did, follow #61 instructions. There are two areas in the Jungle that can easily be missed. Thanks for the post #61.

Im at 69/72

I hope that the jungle location of the villige is northwest on the map is my last 2 locations. Ive heard there is only 71 locations so these should be my last 2.

Ive done all side quests and main quests on playthrough 1 now at lvl 43 and only need like 5 or 6 more of the 120 collectibles.

So happy this will be my next 1000.

This achivemnt sucks though ugggh. Kinda dumb theres not an in game check list on the locations that you found/need to find like the ''Explorer'' perk in Fallout 3.

@222 I had 56 going in there and was one short! Was with a group and so got pulled through before I had chance to go back and check around. I thought I had missed something in the Jungle but in the end it was the infirmary in the hotel when getting morphine for Ken!!! This was because someone joined my game and fetched the stuff for me and I didn't actually go into the room. Just goes to show you think you have everything covered and then the most inane simple thing pops when you least expect it.

He is a location you may not have yet and its in a very weird place. On the second island the city location head straight down to the bottom of the map there will be a warehouse. Go behind the warehouse head towards the shore and walk behind the warehouse by the wall. this is where i got mine hope this helps :D

It blows my mind that 100+ people that ive read have missed the bottom left corner of moresby by the boat. When you see a set of stairs that leads down to a boat on the beach, that is clearly explorable how could anyone miss this. shit it was the first place I found in the city. I have searched every inch of this pos game and officially call bullshit and give up.

A really good way to do this achievement is if you missed any in the first playthrough you could play in a co-op game and if you know what you missed you can go to them, I am on like 65 and I haven't been to the prison in my own game yet

Hey everybody i found this one to be quite difficult it took me going to the prison and instead of following the group right away i ventured off down a hallway and POP got the achievement, i litteraly had no green left on my island maps anywhere so risked the prison and sure enough. hope this helps somebody. good luck.

This achievement gave me a headache, during my first playthrough before going to the prison i made sure to explore all the damn island and i was still 1 place short, after a couple of hours i got fed up and decided to finish the game already and skip this one, as expected i ended up with 71/72

Now i'm playing NG+ and it fucking unlocks in the hotel parking lot where you get the armored vehicle
As this is a story mission i'm pretty damn sure i have been here before, i didn't even deviate from the route marker(same as the first playthrough) so i was like WTF when i saw it pop

Anyway i'm glad it's finally over.
