The newest entry into the Def Jam series, Icon, has gone through a change of development with EA Chicago, the makers of Fight Night, now holding the reins. With the new team, the game has gone through a serious overhaul and has become a slower, more technical game.

One of the first things you will notice about the game is the lack of a HUD, instead relying on the physical looks to determine health. Instead of trying to pay attention, you can enable the HUD through the options menu. On the combat side of things, reversals are the name of the game, as they allow you to block an enemy's attack, and react accordingly. Also new to the series, is bass. Throughout the fight, one of the two fighter's themes will play, with the environment coming alive whenever the bass comes on. During these bass hits, the environment can become a huge hazard for nearby fighters, but using it to your advantage is key in winning each fight.

Achievement-wise, this game does take some work to get achievements out of. A good chunk of the achievements come from the games story mode, known as Build a Label. In Build a Label, you must help run a recording company, recruiting rappers, and publishing their songs in an attempt to make as much as you can. You will get most of the achievements just playing normally, but for a few, you will have to really work at them. If you don't plan right, it is very easy to miss three of the game's achievements. The biggest ones you have to worry about are KaChing Bling, Fashion Icon, and Ladies Man.

Even if you are careful, it is very hard, if not impossible, to get all three achievements in one playthrough. As such, you will probably have to start a new playthrough for either KaChing Bling and Fashion Icon, or Ladies Man. For the requirements for each achievement, you either have to focus on one or the other, so decide which one you want to take care of from the get-go.

Aside from those achievements, much trouble will come from trying to finish the story mode on the hardest difficulty, which gives the achievement BMF. While somewhat difficult on the easier difficulties, the game difficulty jumps high when it comes to Hard. Most of your attacks are blocked, and are even countered. Your opponent will always throw you into each stage's hazards whenever given the chance, and you have very little time to break out of a throw attempt when you are grabbed. There are two ways to get through the game, even despite the competency of the AI. You can either learn the timing and do nothing but reverse all of your opponents attacks, which takes much practice to do, or use a method described further below in the guide.

As of March 16, 2010, the servers for the game's multiplayer have been shut down. Because of this, all of the multiplayer achievements in the game have become unobtainable. To all newcomers, that leaves the maximum possible score for this game at 685 points out of the original 1000.

Step 1: Hard Playthrough
First things first, go to the options menu, and under gameplay settings, change the difficulty for Hard. You are not given the option to change difficulties at all if you start a new game, so you need to be sure that you change the difficulty manually before you start. Also, once you start, don't ever change the difficulty until you unlock BMF, as if you play any of the fights while not on hard, you will not get the achievement.

For this playthrough, it is recommended you focus on either KaChing Bling and Fashion Icon, or Ladies Man. Unless you're used to dealing with the AI, read below for a strategy on how to beat them. I personally recommend getting Ladies Man this playthrough, as that takes more time and preparation to do. Also, keep in mind that you have three chances to get Protect Your Crib, so pay attention.

As stated before, playing through Build a Label is a challenge, but there are things you can do to make it very manageable. If you want to stand a chance at even finishing, you must learn the DJ Scratch system. Also, you must learn how to throw. To throw, go forward with the , and then follow by going in whichever direction you want your opponent to go.

Whenever there is a heavy bass hit during the song playing, the environment will come to life and will damage any combatants nearby. With scratching, you gain the ability to bring the song to a point where one of these heavy bass hits, giving you complete control of the arena. The only consistent way to win fights is to throw your opponent near one of the hazards, and use a Scratch to bring the song to a point where the bass kicks in, and damage him. In order to do a DJ Scratch, hold , and spin the around for two full circles. When done correctly, you will see your fighter scratch the air like a turntable. When he finishes, the song will change to a point where the bass kicks in, and the environment will react accordingly.

Also, you have the ability to change the song playing during the fight. Since both fighters have a theme, only one of those songs will play at one time. While you don't always have to, it's something that can turn the tide of the fight in your favor. To do it, hold and spin the in two complete circles. You will notice your fighter starting to scratch in the air, and after doing two circles with the , he will start to switch to his other hand. Once he does, do two full rotations with the , and the song will change to your fighter's theme. This activates any nearby hazards the moment it is used, and for a short time, gives your fighter a huge offensive boost. All attacks are nearly instantaneous, deal much more damage, you can move faster, and even throw faster. Also, it seems that the AI is slightly less offensive when your theme is playing, so always make sure your theme is playing whenever you're given the chance.

Unfortunately, you can't always just grab your opponent and expect throw him wherever you want. The AI will usually hit you before you can grab them, and sometimes even break out of your grip if you take too long. You must either catch your opponent with a grab before he attacks you, attack him and force him to keep his guard up, and then try to grab for a throw. Different strategies work for different opponents, so you will need experiment and figure out what works.

Step 2: KaChing Bling and Fashion Icon
Once you've finished the game on Hard, you must go back for these two achievements. They don't take long, but you need to plan ahead so that you don't screw yourself over.

Step 3: Mop Up
After getting all the achievements you can in Build a Label, all that's left is to get the random achievements in the game. That leaves you with any finisher achievement you haven't done yet, Reversals and Directionals, and character based achievements. It may take time, but not nearly as long as beating the game on Hard.

Conclusion
Def Jam: Icon is not a hard game to finish once you learn the in's and out's of it, but it will take some time to do, and work. If you plan carefully, you can get through the game with less than two full playthroughs.

Workin’ at the Car Wash10
Solo Hard or Ranked: Clean up your opponent with the Car Wash Brush
For these achievements, you must win a versus match against a computer set to Hard via the options menu. All of these achievements require you to defeat your opponent using the various arena hazards in the game. The hazards must be what finishes your opponent off, but the hard part will be weakening him to the point where it can finish him off. If you're having trouble, adopt the method described to get through Build a Label on Hard for help on dealing with Hard AI opponents.

For this achievement, go to the Gas Station arena. You must finish your opponent off using the car wash brush that pops out from the right side of the area. The brush, unlike most hazards, does not go strictly based on the bass hits. As such, just throw your opponent into the car wash area when given the chance, and they won't have enough time to get away from the brush.

Also, for a good amount of the hazards, you must first damage them before they can deal out damage. In order to damage them, either hit them with a regular attack, or have someone thrown into them. Once they've been damaged, they will visually change, and the next bass hit, will react violently. Use DJ scratches as soon as your opponent is near the hazard, so that you don't have to wait for the song to send him flying.
The Big Burn15
Solo Hard or Ranked: Torch your opponent in the Flaming Gas Pump
See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more info.

For this achievement, go to the Gas Station arena. Right in the middle of the arena, there are two gas pumps, damage either of them, and they will explode with each bass hit. Have that explosion finish off your opponent for this achievement.

Hit The Lights15
Solo Hard or Ranked: Use the Light Wall at The Club until it's lights out
See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more information.

For this achievement, go to either The Club or the After Hours. On the left side of the Club (right side in the After Hours), is a huge wall filled with lights. Damage the lights, and you will noticed a huge crack with sparks coming from the wall. Simply finish off your opponent with the electricity that sparks during the bass hits.

See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more information.

Go to the Block arena. On the right side of the arena, you'll see a low rider bouncing. During bass hits, the car's tail end whips around, damaging all nearby. Get the low rider to finish off your opponent for this achievement.
Heads Up10
Solo Hard or Ranked: Knock your opponent out with the Swinging Light Rig

See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more information.

For this achievement, go to the Penthouse arena. At the very left of the area is a fireplace, covered by glass. Damage it, and whenever the bass kicks in, a huge flame erupts from it. Finish your opponents off using this flame for the achievement.
Window of Opportunity15
Solo Hard or Ranked: Throw your opponent out of the window at the Penthouse
See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more information.

For this achievement, go to the Penthouse arena. In the middle of the area is a large window overlooking the city that you must damage. Once damaged, it will crack, cracking even more when the base hits. You must throw your opponent out the window as the bass hits for this achievement.
Killer Sound System10
Solo Hard or Ranked: Bring your opponent's health to zero with volume at 11 at the Office
See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more information.

For this achievement, go to the Executive Suite arena. At the center of the arena, behind the desk, are several giant speakers. For this achievement, you must use the speakers to finish off your opponent.

See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more information.

For this achievement, go to the Rooftop arena. At the very center of it is a landing pad with a helicopter floating above. Whenever the bass hits, the helicopter's tail sweeps the corner of the landing pad, damaging whoever is caught. Use this helicopter to defeat your opponent for the achievement.
Look But Don't Touch25
Solo Hard or Ranked: Let one of the dancers defeat your opponent
See Workin’ at the Car Wash for more information.

For this achievement, go to the Club or the After Hours. Towards each side of the arenas are pole dancers. Whenever the bass hits, they swing on their pole and kick any combatant too close. Let them finish off your opponent for the achievement.
Mixtape25
Play your "Def Jam Icon" Saved Playlist in My Soundtrack (1)
You must have at least one song saved to your 360 in a playlist. From the main menu, select My Soundtrack, and choose to use your own saved playlist. Choose the fighters, and when the fight starts, the achievement will unlock.
Bling5
Have a record go gold in Build a Label
You must have a record go Gold, Platinum, and Multiplatinum respectively. Throughout Build a Label, your artists will release songs which you can then invest in, deciding how much money to spend on releasing it.

You can get this on the very first song you are able to invest in, which you can after helping Luda out. Focus on putting a majority of the money you have into Airplay, with a good amount into Marketing, followed by PR Appearances, and Cost of Goods. After you've done a few fights, Luda's song should go gold, with the achievement following.

You must sell 500k units in order for a song to go Gold.
Bling Bling10
Have a record go platinum in Build a Label
See Bling for more info.

It is possible for this to happen with Luda's song, but more often than not, it won't. You can, however, easily get this with the second song you release. As said in Bling, invest in the order of importance. The more money you put into your song, the more of a chance you have of selling more.

You must sell 1 million units in order for a song to go Platinum.
KaChing Bling15
Have a record go multiplatinum in Build a Label (1)
See Bling for more info.

An achievement that does take quite a bit of preparation, but is very possible. When starting Build a Label, instead of buying anything with the money you start with, invest all of the money you earn into Luda's song. With the money you earn from it, invest everything you have into your second song in order of importance. Do whatever you have to do save up until you hit 3 million dollars, so don't go shopping for clothes or jewelery, and try not to give your artists too much with royalties, around 30-35% is fine. Once you save up that much, whenever you get a new song to invest in to, max out every possible stat. With everything maxed, go do three or four fights. After that time, your song should have gone multiplatinum.

When it comes to the song you want to release, make sure you do not release any other songs at the same time. Releasing multiple songs takes away money you could use to invest into one song, and they both will compete for sales, usually getting beaten out by competitors in the end. It's always better to focus on one song, as it will easily make the sales if you invest everything you possibly can.

Also, it doesn't matter what your artist's approval rating is when you release a song. Approval only affects how quickly an artist will make a song, so you don't have to give into their every want. Of course, keep their approval up, but you don't need to give money whenever they ask you to. It's also highly recommended not to get any girlfriends if you are going for this, as they require a lot of money to keep happy. Since you really have to save up, it's nearly impossible to get both this and Ladies Man. So before you start your playthrough of Build a Label, plan on which one you want to go for.

Make sure you release the song you want for this achievement before Luda asks to go out to the club, or else you won't have enough time in the game to get the sales you need.

You must sell 2 million units for this achievement.
BMF100
Complete Build A Label Mode on Hardest Difficulty Level (2)
Probably the hardest achievement in the game. You must beat the entire story on Hard without ever changing the difficulty. Before starting Build a Label, make sure you go to options from the main menu, and change the difficulty via game options.

DJ Scratching is the key to making it through this mode in one piece, so always use it! Figure out ways to keep your opponent still enough to grab, and always get them into the hazards. They deal more damage than any of your attacks, and will bring someone down fairly quickly if you focus on it. While either of the of the starting styles will work, it's recommended that you start with Street Kwon Do, as you grab faster than other styles.
Producing Mogul10
Release 6 songs in Build a Label
While progressing through Build a Label, you will keep gaining artists, and they will keep sending you songs to release. It doesn't matter how much money you invest, but so long as you release 6 songs, you will get the achievement.
Top of the Charts10
Have an album reach number 1 on the Charts
See Bling for more info. Just as if you were trying to sell more units, you will have a higher chance of reaching number 1 on the charts if you put more money into the song. It does not matter how long the song stays at the top of the charts, as long as it gets there.

With Luda's song, if you invest all of the money you have into it, you can very easily hit #1 with it.
Fashion Icon25
Reach 500,000 Style Points in Build a Label (1)
This achievement goes hand and hand with KaChing Bling, so refer to that achievement regarding information on how to get it.

Once one of your songs reaches multiplatinum, you will easily have several millions of dollars to play around with. Go to the Jeweler, and buy as much jewelry as you can. All jewelry you have increases how much style you get after each fight, even if you're not wearing it.

After buying as much as you can, go and do a fight. If you've bought as much as you can, you can easily get well over 800k style points in the single fight, netting you the achievement.
Ladies Man35
Have 4 satisfied girlfriends simultaneously in Build A Label Mode
Also requiring some preparation, this achievement can be a pain to do. Throughout the story, girls will approach you, asking if you want to go out sometime. You can only get a girlfriend after one of four points in the story, and there are 6 possible girlfriends you can get, all depending on how much style you have. The girlfriends, style requirements, and how far you must progress into the story for them to approach you is as follows.

1. After you help Luda in the beginning.
2. After the cutscene that introduces Troy.
3. After you get the penthouse.
4. After hitting the town with Luda.

Nina: 1 style
Liris: 20,000 style
Mayra: 35,000 style
Summer: 50,000 style
Christin: 75,000 style
Melyssa: 100,000 style

Many people have trouble getting the girls to approach you, as the game is somewhat strict when it comes to style. You must be somewhat over the style requirement in order for a girl to even approach you, so you will need to buy some jewelery. Not a lot, but just enough to get you over the requirements for one.

After those certain points in the story, girls will only approach you after fights at either the Club or the After Hours. Don't worry if they don't talk to you right after those points in the story, as more often than not, they'll approach you after your next club fight.

Pleasing the girls themselves is the easy part. Right away, always give them what they want, and never say no. Also, when you finally move from the dorm to the Penthouse, always check your messages. From then on, your girls will occasionally leave a message saying they want to come over. This will show up on your appointments, and is very important if you want to keep them happy, so always pay attention. If you've kept them all happy, by the time your fourth girlfriend finally asks you for something, you should get the achievement.

Due to how you have to spend for this achievement, it's nearly impossible to get both this and KaChing Bling. So before you start your playthrough of Build a Label, plan on which one you want to go for.

Huge thanks to Demon Ninja for listing the story points when girls approach you, they're style requirements, and all girlfriends.

Reversals Only50
Beatings with Bass: Solo: Hard: No Strikes, Directionals, Get Up Attacks, or Grab attempts. (1)
First things first, make sure that the difficulty is set to hard via the options menu. Once that's done, make sure you go to game modes, and go through Beatings with Bass. Doing it in any other mode will not give you the achievement. From there, select the Penthouse for your arena, and Sittin Sidewayz as your theme.

With Beatings with Bass, you lose the ability to scratch, only being able to use the environment when the Bass hits. For your opponent, choose someone named Dae Dae, as he will pretty much do nothing except attack you. Dae Dae will unlock over the course of Build a Label, so you must progress through a bit before you should try this achievement.

You will not be able to do anything at all, except for reversing an attack. To reverse an attack, hold , and press either up or down on the , right before the attack hits you. All attacks are either low or high, hit up if you need to block a high attack, or down for a low attack. Go right away to the window, and make sure it is damaged. Once you do, wait for him to attack, and counter. It may take a few times to get, but once you reverse it, you can grab him. After grabbing him, just throw him right out of the window for this achievement.
Directional Attacks Only50
Beatings with Bass: Solo: Hard: No Strikes, Get Up Attacks, Blocks, Reversals, Taunts, or Grabs. (2)
This one is exactly like Reversals Only, except instead of reversing attacks, you can only use directional attacks. To use a directional attack, spin in a circle. Avoid starting from the top though, as you will sometimes try to grab instead of attack, which voids the achievement. It's a huge pain to do this, though, as you cannot finish off your opponent with your attack, because only the environment will finish your opponent off.

Choose whoever you want for this achievement, as there are no best characters to use for it. Use the Executive Suite as your area, and Sitting Sidewayz as your theme if you want the bass to be constant. Focus on trying to get your opponent into the speakers in the back, which is easier said than done. Depending on which way you spin the , your attack will go in a different direction. Where your attack goes, it will send someone in that direction. These change depending on the camera angle, and which side you're on, so try and figure it out as you go.

Secret Achievements

Troy's Trophies50
Be Troy Dollar and protect your trophies while fighting a solo match (1)
Troy is a secret character, and you unlock him by beating him in Build a Label.

For this achievement, set up a match on the Executive Suite arena. From there, all you have to do is win the match without breaking the trophy rack on the left side of the arena. If it does break, just restart the fight. This can be done on any difficulty.
Brother's Store50
Be Dr. Chang and protect your brother's convenient store during a solo match
Dr. Chang is a secret character, and you unlock him by beating Troy Dollar in Build a Label. You can also get him by inputting a cheat at the main menu. At the main menu, hit Down, , Right to unlock Dr. Chang. This does not void the achievement.

For this achievement, set up a match at the Gas Station. All you need to do is win the match without breaking the front doors of the store to the left. If the doors break, restart the match. Difficulty does not matter.
Protect Your Crib50
Complete a Fight without the glass wall breaking in your crib in Build a Label
After you move into the Penthouse in Build a Label, you will occasionally be forced to fight in the place. To the left of the arena is a glass wall, which you must make sure does not break. If it breaks, purposefully lose the fight, and try again.

You will have three chances to do it throughout the story, so don't worry if you don't get it your first chance. If you're not careful though, you will lose your chance at getting this achievement, as it is missable.
