Duke Nukem 3D was by far one of the best, and most memorable for me, FPS games to ever come out in the 90's. I remember playing this game for hours, mimicking all of the Duke phrases “It’s time to kick ass and chew bubble gum but I’m all outta gum.”
Introduction
Welcome to Duke Nukem 3D! This game has a total of 12 achievements and requires only one playthrough in order to get the full 200 possible. I gave this game a 3/10 difficulty rating simply because it is a straightforward game with minimal effort required to attain many of the achievements, except for the Oomph, Uugh, Where is it? achievement that requires you searching around the levels hunting down secret places. This game will take you roughly 6 hours. It will take some gamers more, some less depending on how familiar you are with the game, how quickly you progress through the levels and whether or not you choose to do the multiplayer kills legitimately or by boosting. Usually if you are finding the secret places as you go, things will start off slow but then pick up a lot faster after you have found the necessary 70 secret places for the achievement.
Step 1: Preparation
As far as preparation goes, depending on your background of Duke Nukem 3D, it would be very wise to load up the Official Duke Nukem 3D Walkthrough made by 3DRealms. It can be found by clicking HERE. This walkthrough will not only help you make your way through the treacherous terrain of Duke Nukem while taking down the alien maggots, but also be of great help to you when searching for secret places. If you'd rather just have a list of the secret places, you can also visit the secrets guide thread HERE.
Step 2: Play the Game
As you play through the game, keep in mind that you must find 70 secret places. Now while there are way over 70 secret places total, 70 is the number you are shooting for in order to get your achievement.
NOTE: Keep in mind, that in order to get the Oomph, Uugh, Where is it? achievement, you must find 70 different secret places before the achievement will unlock.
Playing through Duke Nukem 3D isn’t really a difficult task as many of the enemies are quite easy to dispose of fairly quickly and with little effort. If you are finding that you are getting shot a lot, try strafing and enabling the “Run” option which can be activated by pressing down on the right bumper stick. This will allow you to run much faster thus evading enemy bullets.
Duke Nukem has many inventory items to help aid you in your venture of destroying the environments and killing alien maggots. Those items include:
- Portable Medkit – allows you to replenish your health
- Steroids – allows you run even faster than having the run option enabled through hostile territory
- Holoduke – allows you to deploy a hologram of Duke Nukem to distract enemies
- Jetpack – allows you to reach high points that may have weapons or health
- Night Vision Goggles – allows you to see enemies in dark areas and locations in the game
- Airtank – allows you to venture underwater to battle aliens and reach key areas of a level to complete that level
- Protective Boots – allows you to walk across sludge/slime/hazardous waste products without taking any damage to your health
All but the last two inventory items you have to use the or direction pad to select and then press to activate them. The air tank and the protective boots will automatically become effective either when you submerge under water or walk across hazardous slime throughout the game.
Alien Maggots are Gonna Pay achievement: Some people have had some difficulty with this achievement but there is an excellent video in the Duke Nukem 3D guide located below that shows a quick and simple way to get this achievement for those having difficulties.
Multiplayer: The multiplayer in Duke Nukem is quite fun with a few friends or even x360a community members. As outlined in the Duke Nukem 3D guide located below this Road Map, you can earn the kills legitimate or through boosting the achievements with a few friends.
Step 3: Mop Up
Once you complete the game, congratulations as you should have earned all if not most all of the achievements! If you haven’t found 70 secret places, simply go back through the levels where you know you missed several and re-attempt those levels again.
Conclusion:
That's it! If you've gotten to this point and followed my advice you should have the complete 200 for this game.
