Introduction:
Kengo: Legend of the 9 may seem like a daunting game at first, but I assure you this is simply because there is so little information regarding the game, most notably within the game itself. The game is sorely lacking a tutorial, which would have helped immensely. I would recommend reading this post by Azrael00uk and starting the game on easy to get use to how things work. It may take a few tries, but if you can get use to the controls and play style of the game, you may well find yourself enjoying it quite a bit.

Step 1: Main Game
Once you are comfortable with how to play the game, you should start with the single player main game. This will take you a minimum of 18 playthroughs to get all the main game achievements, as you must beat the game with each of the 9 characters on both Normal and Difficult, since the difficulties do not stack for the achievements. While doing this, you can try to get the secret achievements as well, since they are for gaining specific traits during the main game. It may be easier, however, to attempt these individually later once you have mastered the game and its controls. When you start the game, you will only have the first three characters to choose from. To unlock a specific character, you must beat the game with the character that is 3 spots above them on the character selection screen. For example, to unlock Sasaki Kojiro, you must beat the game with Miyamoto Musashi. Completing the main game takes approximately 1 hour per character, so expect to spend approximately 20 hours completing this portion of the game. Once complete, you should have the following achievements for a total of 330:

Miyamoto Musashi Complete
Okita Soji Complete
Sakamoto Ryoma Complete
Sasaki Kojiro Complete
Yagyu Jubei Complete
Chiba Sanako Complete
Ito Ittosai Complete
Horibe Yasubei Complete
Okada Izo Complete
All Characters Completed (N)
All Characters Completed (D)

Step 2: Missions
Once you have completed the main game achievements, you should then complete all the missions to gold status. This will involve one more playthrough of the main game to create the custom character you will want to use to accomplish this. Your goal here is to complete each mission to gold status by placing in the top third of the leaderboard for each mission. This will require that you sign on to LIVE so that you can access the leaderboards. The leaderboards are based entirely on the time in which it takes you to complete each mission, so focus on completing each mission as quickly as possible to ensure you end up in the top third. Many of these missions will come easily as they are straight fighting missions, but there are a handful that will give you problems by introducing one or more special rules. Edo Battle in particular takes at least half an hour each time you complete it, and you will have to redo it if you do not reach the gold time. If you get these perfect your first try, expect to spend about 5 hours doing these, but more realistically, you will spend 10-20 hours here. Once complete these missions, you should have the following achievements for a total of 190:

Street Rumble
The Three Ronin Must Die!
Kira Household
7 Wanderers
Save Sanako!
Forest Killers
Shinsengumi
Edo Battle
Island Rampage
Free Your Mind
Cleared All Missions (Bronze)
Cleared All Missions (Silver)
Cleared All Missions (Gold)

Step 3: Online
At this point, I recommend making your attempt at beating the online. This will require one more playthrough to build the custom character for this, and possibly several more to perfect the character as it may be difficult to get the character right on the first try since the online is simulation only and if the character you build doesn’t work out properly, the only choice is to build a new one. You can also get the Five Man Contest achievement here using your online custom character in the offline "solo contest". Once you have your custom character, all you can really do at that point is continuously enter them in online contests since you literally can do nothing else in the online. This is by far the most frustrating part of the game, as there is a very large component of luck to this as you will have absolutely no control over your character during the entire time online. If you realize that your character cannot break into the top 1% after spending 5+ hours getting them to the top 5%, it can be very disheartening to try and restart with a new character build. I believe it would take ten hours or so to get this if done perfectly in one try, so expect to spend 20-30 hours here or possibly even more as you get use to how the online works. As a point of courtesy I would highly recommend that once you complete the online portion of the game, that you upload one of your characters that you have never used online so that it is easier for the next people playing to get high on the leaderboards. Once complete, you should have the following achievements for a total of 300:

Five Man Contest
1-Dan
2-Dan
3-Dan
4-Dan
5-Dan
6-Dan
7-Dan
8-Dan
9-Dan
Master

Step 4: Cleanup / Secret Achievements
This is the time to get any of the secret achievements you may have missed. Each of these achievements require you either to master a specific type of move, or finish a level having met specific conditions. In particular, three of these achievements will require entire (and separate) playthroughs of the main game again if you did not manage to get them while completing the main game achievements. Please see the achievement guide for specific instructions on each individual achievement. Once complete, you should have the following achievements for a total of 180:

Late Attack
Stealth Attack
Push Back f/ Edge
Kumitachi Demon
Untouchable Light
Eye of God
Early Attack
Shrewd Observer
Iron Wall

Conclusion:
Completing this game to 1000 will take 18+ playthroughs of the main game, mastery of all 10 missions to get gold status, mastery of the game’s various moves to get the traits needed for the secret achievements, and a mixture of skill and luck to complete the online portion of the game. Completing this game will take a lot of patience and determination, and is a true achievement for anyone who has done so.

Start by reading this post by Azrael00uk. It goes into depth on how to beat the first level using any character as well as learning the basics of the game. I would suggest starting with one character on either easy or normal to get use to how the game plays. Once you have beaten the first level, don’t forget to SAVE! You must manually save your progress after each level, or you will lose it if you fail the next level. Keep this in mind as it is true through all playthroughs on all difficulties. Also, once you beat the first level (and every level thereafter) you can spend points you earned in the level on new moves and orbs you earned on upgrading your statistics (Health, Stamina, Attack, and Defense). I would highly recommend your first new move purchased be one that allows you do to do either a combo or a combo. This will be your tool to victory, and you can choose it from any of the three stances. This gives you six combos to choose from. My recommendation is to choose a ‘Step In’ combo. I suggest you now practice the following maneuver (for this I will assume you chose the combo): …etc, keeping this up continuously. You will need to time your to after you have pressed three times, but only two attacks have landed. This will cause your third attack to be cancelled and prevent you from ‘stalling’ between attacks, allowing for a continuous attack without end. If you chose a ‘Step In’ attack as your combo, it will give you a bit of extra time to hit while your character ‘steps in’ closer to the enemy. If you can master this attack, you can beat the entire game using it on all difficulties against all enemies, including the bosses.

There are two pieces of advice which may prove beneficial. If at any time you run low on health, it can actually be regenerated. You may notice that you regain stamina when standing still, but if you have full stamina, you will actually regain health, albeit at a very slow rate. If you stand still, then when enemies approach you take a few steps away and stand still, repeating over and over, you will gain a small amount of health each time you stand still. Admittedly, this will take a while, but you can fully recover your health if you have the patience for it. Also, if you are having trouble taking down some bosses on Difficult, one trick I liked to use to drain their stamina for a one hit kill is to simply run circles around the level. There is no risk like there is with doing Kumitachi () since they can be countered by bosses on higher difficulties, and it is guaranteed to bring them to 0 stamina with no fuss. You must then only land one Kumitachi and Inashi ( again while grappling) them into a wall for a one hit kill.

Each character takes about one hour to complete, and you must beat the game 18 times to get all the main mission achievements, twice with each of nine characters since the normal and difficult achievements do not stack, so expect to spend close to 20 hours getting these.

Save Sanako!10
Cleared the Mission "Save Sanako!"

This is the first mission that is not straight fighting. You will have Sanako with you on a boat while you are fighting off enemies. The goal is to kill off all the enemies while keeping Sanako alive. The difficult part: You can kill her yourself!! That’s right, you can easily hit her and damage her bringing her health down quickly. What you will want to do is focus on the enemies attacking her so she stays alive, but using the maneuver described in “All Characters Completed (D)” as this is the only way you will complete the level quickly enough to obtain a gold ranking. After the Edo Battle mission, this is the second hardest mission to obtain gold on.

Forest Killers10

Shinsengumi10

Edo Battle10
Cleared the Mission "Edo Battle Royale"

See “Cleared All Missions (Gold)

This mission gives you a 60minute timer and challenges you to kill 1000 enemies including a boss every 100 enemies for a total of 10 bosses, only the last of which is at all challenging. If you have mastered the maneuver described in “All Characters Completed (D)” this should be relatively easy, although it is definitely time consuming and extremely aggravating to die at the last boss after killing 999 enemies and have to restart. What you should do is just go nuts with the continuous attack technique until you are running low on health (to about 25% health remaining) then run to the area with the well and just stand there (defend yourself if necessary, but do not move from this spot). After your Stamina has finished recovering you will begin regaining health. Stay here until you have fully recovered. You may have to repeat this a couple times during the course of the mission. The mission itself is not overly difficult, but meeting the gold requirement is. At the time of writing this guide, you must obtain a time of less than 34’31’’76 to qualify for gold.

Island Rampage10
Cleared the Mission "Island Rampage"

See “Cleared All Missions (Gold)

This mission requires you to kill 100 convicts. This may sound easy compared to Edo Battle, but it does have a catch: all hits are one hit kills! Take it easy and keep using the technique described in “All Characters Completed (D)”. For the fastest completion, I would recommend fighting at the beach you start at until the enemies stop spawning there (at around 70 remaining if I recall correctly) then head to the cliff/waterfall and fight there until those enemies stop respawning (at around 30 remaining if I recall correctly) then head back to the beginning beach to finish off the last enemies. This mission is truly only difficult due to the one hit kills, but if you manage to avoid the enemies’ attacks, you should do fine on this one.

Free Your Mind10
Cleared the Mission "Free Your Mind from Desire"

This mission challenges you to defeat 98 “Desires” and 10 “Sins” with the catch being that all the enemies are invisible. This may sound difficult, but in reality, it is the easiest of the harder missions. What you want to do is hit to target the nearest enemy, then spam until they are dead, rinse and repeat.

Simply completing each mission will give you the achievement corresponding to that mission, and if you can beat them all, you will get "Cleared All Missions (Bronze)”. If you wish to obtain “Cleared All Missions (Silver)” or “Cleared All Missions (Gold)” you will need to be connected to Xbox LIVE so you can obtain leaderboard information. For the Silver Achievement, you will need to be at least in the middle third of the leaderboard for all missions, and you will need to be in the top third for all missions for the Gold Achievement. You can clearly see what time you will need to achieve in each mission to obtain each achievement, as the leaderboard is colour coded: the bottom third is bronze, middle is silver, and top is gold. So, for instance, if you want to get Gold in one of the missions, and the last gold coloured spot on the leaderboard is 5 minutes, you will have to at least do better than that to take their spot.

The following advice will be greatly beneficial and will actually net you gold on most of the missions. Missions where you will need a different strategy or a bit more guidance will have that info under their individual completion achievements. In my opinion, you will need two things to get these done efficiently. First, you must master the maneuver described in “All Characters Completed (D)” that allows you to continuously attack without interruption. Second, you will need to create a custom character. Although you can use any of the default characters, I do not believe any of them have the appropriate stats to get you through with ease (I’m sure it can be done, but it will be difficult). To build the custom character you will need, you must first know two things. First, the manner in which you kill an opponent in a level decides how many points you get for the kill to spend on new moves. The most points are earned for performing a Kumitachi () to grab an opponent, draining their stamina, and then doing an Inashi ( again while grappling) to throw them into a wall, against a river, into a lantern, etc, and then performing an instant kill with either a vertical or horizontal attack. You will know that the attack will be a one hit kill if the arrow above the enemy's head turns red. These one hit kills will net you the most points possible. Second, the manner in which you kill bosses decides how many status orbs you obtain in each level. For each boss you defeat, you will receive two orbs. However, if you one hit kill the boss as described above, you will earn a third orb for defeating that boss. For our custom character, we will want the maximum number of orbs possible, which means you will have to one shot all eight normal bosses.

To build your custom character, pick Sasaki Kojiro in the main game on easy (difficulty doesn’t matter, and it’s easiest to max your stats on the easy setting). You will want to get maximum points on at least one or two levels to purchase the following moves in Stance I: Lightning, Up Swing, and Swallow Ctr. This combo has four hits and is the longest reaching combo I have seen in the game, which is a huge advantage. You will also want to make sure that during the first seven levels, you one shot each boss to earn the eight bonus orbs. You will want to spend your orbs so that you have maximum Health, Attack, and Defense, but no orbs in Stamina. The maneuver you will be using completely drains your Stamina so it will be empty during the entirety of every fight anyways. Once you’ve purchased the combo needed, I suggest practicing the maneuver during the rest of the levels so you are prepared for the missions, as they can all be easily beaten using this technique with very few exceptions, which are noted in their respective mission achievements.

Indisputably the hardest achievement(s) in the game. These achievements seemingly require you to have great online skill. However, the online in Kengo: Legend of the 9 is strictly simulation. This means that you have to create a custom character in the main game, and only once you have completed the single player with one of the characters can you then bring that character into the online mode. Many people would have you believe that the AI traits you unlock for your character play a prime role in this online mode and that certain traits give your character certain abilities, and these traits are obtained based on how you played the single player. Let me start by saying that this is not true whatsoever. When I obtained “Master” my character had the AI traits Early Attack, Delivers First Blow, Untouchable Light, Slices Through Air, Weak to Attacks, Weak to Soji, and A Sheltered Life. If you’ve seen many of the AI traits, you’ll recognize this as an amazingly weak set of traits, which only serves to prove my point. The AI traits DO NOT decide how your character will fight online, they merely DESCRIBE how your character will fight online. With that said, there is one trait that I have actually noticed having a benefit. If you can get the trait “Pushes Back from the Edge”, this will actually let your character take one extra hit once they hit 0 health, but do not go out of your way to obtain this as doing so will adversely affect how your character fights.

The custom character you want for the online is Chiba Sanako on easy. In the first level, immediately use to switch to Stance III and begin to use … etc, which is a more complex version of the technique outlined in “All Characters Completed (D)” since you must attack twice then block to cancel before the second attack hits. Since this is a very fast combo, it will be hard to do, but do your best. It is ok if you do not do this level perfectly, but do as well as you can. Also, make sure you defeat the boss with a one hit move to get a bonus orb as you will not be obtaining any other bonus orbs for this character. After the first level, make sure you purchase moves in Stance III so that you have: Rhythm Attack, Rapid Rhythm, and W Fly Blade S, and set Stance III as your base stance by pressing . Also, make sure you allot your orbs so that you max out Health and Attack, and have one orb in Stamina and none in Defense. From this point onwards, you will be using the … etc combo exclusively. The reason for this is that we want the online fighter to do nothing but this continuous attack, and to achieve this, we must use nothing but this continuous attack in the main game. Use it unforgivingly. If an enemy is blocking, just keep attacking in this manner until their stamina is depleted and they can no longer block. Do not walk towards an enemy to attack them, just start with the combo, and let the ‘Step In’ part of the attack bring you closer to the enemy. In other words, do NOTHING but this attack. You will not get any other achievements in this run except possibly “Untouchable Light” on the last level, and the one for beating the game with Sanako if you don’t have it yet. Once you have your custom character, feel free to go and get “Five Man Contest”. It is now time to head online! Just keep fighting and moving up in ranks. You will eventually get this achievement if your character is developed correctly. For an example of what it should look like, try a practice match against the person in second place online (as of the time of writing this guide). Persistance is key here. By the time I received this achievement, my record was 171 wins and 137 losses and I was rank 70 (there were 73XX online opponents, so any rank 73rd or better would work). As a point of courtesy I would highly recommend that once you complete the online you upload one of your characters that you never used online so that it is easier for the next people playing to get high on the leaderboards.

Secret Achievements

Late Attack20
Acquired the AI Trait "Late Attack"

This trait unlocks at the end of the main game. To get this, the majority of your attacks must be “counters”. To counter an attack, stand facing an enemy, and when they move to attack, press +. This will stop their attack and place you in a Kumitachi with them. From here, immediately press or to perform a Soku-Giri on the opponent. Do this as often as possible, killing every enemy this way if possible, and you will get this achievement once you complete the game. You can only obtain one of the traits Late Attack, Stealth Attack, or Early Attack per game.

Stealth Attack20
Acquired the AI Trait "Stealth Attack"

This trait unlocks at the end of the main game. To get this, the majority of your attacks must be “instant kills”. To get an instant kill, perform a Kumitachi (), then perform an Inashi ( again while grappling) to throw an opponent into one of the surfaces that allow for one hit kills. These include, but are not limited to, walls, river banks, and lanterns. If you have thrown an opponent into a surface that will work, the arrow above their head will turn red. Once this happens, press or to one hit kill the opponent. Do this as often as possible, killing every enemy this way if possible, and you will get this achievement once you complete the game. You can only obtain one of the traits Late Attack, Stealth Attack, or Early Attack per game.

Push Back f/ Edge20
Acquired the AI Trait "Pushes Back from the Edge"

This trait unlocks at the end of any level in which you complete the level with just a sliver of health left.

Kumitachi Demon20
Acquired the AI Trait "Kumitachi Demon"

This trait will unlock at the end of any level in which you have performed a majority of Kumitachi attacks so far throughout the game. Because of this, it is much easier to obtain this trait during the first level of any character’s campaign. Simply press to begin a Kumitachi with as many enemies as possible.

Untouchable Light20
Acquired the AI Trait "Untouchable Light"

This trait unlocks at the end of any level in which you complete it without taking any damage. This is easiest done on Easy difficulty on the final level (since it only contains one enemy) using the technique described in “All Characters Completed (D)”.

Eye of God20
Acquired the AI Trait "Eye of God"

You must have two traits unlocked on the same character for this achievement to unlock. The first trait is Soku-giri. To perform a Soku-giri, you must perform a Kumitachi () then just attack the opponent with either or while grappling. For the second trait, you can choose between Tsuba-zeri Bashiri or Inashi (you can only ever have one of these traits at any given time). To perform a Tsuba-zeri Bashiri you must first perform a Kumitachi, then continue holding then press in any direction to run while grappling your opponent. To perform an Inashi, you must first perform a Kumitachi, then simply press in any direction to tug your opponent slightly in that direction. You can complete this achievement in the first level of any character by simply performing a Kumitachi on each opponent, performing a couple Inashi on them, then performing a Soku-giri while still grappling them.

Early Attack20
Acquired the AI Trait "Early Attack"

This trait unlocks at the end of the main game. To get this, the majority of your attacks must be “combo” attacks. To get a combo attack, simply use attacks that are combinations of and . You can purchase various combos at the end of every level to use towards this. Do this as often as possible, killing every enemy this way if possible, and you will get this achievement once you complete the game. You can only obtain one of the traits Late Attack, Stealth Attack, or Early Attack per game.

Shrewd Observer20
Acquired the AI Trait "Shrewd Observer"

You must have two traits unlocked on the same character for this achievement to unlock. The first trait is Kaeshi. To perform a Kaeshi, you must let an opponent grapple you, then you must press in the opposite direction they attempt to pull you in when they do an Inashi against you. The second trait is Avoids Soku-giri. To perform this, you must let an opponent grapple you, then you must press horizontally to avoid a vertical Soku-giri or vertically to avoid a horizontal Soku-giri. This is best obtained on the first level for Sasaki Kojiro. Simply kill all enemies until there is only one enemy left wearing a hat. Place the camera behind you and face him and constantly hold to block. When he eventually grapples you, press up towards him. If he does a Soku-giri you are guaranteed to avoid it, but if he does an Inashi, you only have a ¼ chance of avoiding it, so be prepared by constantly pushing while attempting to dodge the Inashi. This way, if he throws you in a different direction, you will roll away and not take a hit. If you manage to get 10 of each, you should unlock this achievement at the end of the level. One thing to keep note of: It does not matter how many attempts you miss, so long as you get 10 successful of each during this level. You can view the YouTube videos here. Credit for these videos goes to A 2rue LeGacY.

Iron Wall20
Acquired AI Trait "Iron Guard"

This trait will unlock at the end of any level in which you have blocked a majority of attacks so far throughout the game. Because of this, it is much easier to obtain this trait during the first level of any character’s campaign. Simply hold for 5-10 minutes and block all attacks, then finish the level to unlock this achievement.
