Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Achievements

Great Dane

Collect all dog tags

This is a Metal Gear Solid 2 achievement.

This is the hardest and most time consuming achievement in the game. To do this, you need to collect dog tags by holding soldiers up (point a gun to their backs when really close). When they’re held up, go in front of them and point the gun to them while in their sight. Most soldiers will then start shaking and drop a Dog Tag. Some will play tough guy and refuse to shake, so you got to shoot their hand or feet to intimidate them before they will drop their dog tags. You can also point heavy guns like Rocket Launchers for instant intimidation. Each soldier will drop one dog tag, and every soldier has an unique dog tag. Backup soldiers that come when you do things that are suspect don't count. You must not kill soldiers before you get their tags, and some of them are missable.

Different difficulties also have different dog tags. This means you must hunt Dog Tags from soldiers in pretty much every difficulty level (European Extreme doesn't count as a different difficulty for Dog Tag purposes, it's the same as Extreme) to get this achievement. Also note that different difficulties have different number of soldiers, so there are different numbers of dog tags to get as well. Try to focus on locating soldiers and always holding them up when you can. There are 152 Dog Tags in the Tanker Chapter and 242 in the Plant Chapter, for a total of 394 Dog Tags among all difficulties.

However, there's a trick to how this achievement works. You don't really have to collect ALL dog tags like the description says. You only have to get every reward item. Getting 76 tags on the Tanker chapter and 218 on the Plant chapter will do the job. You still need to finish the game when you reach the minimum amount of tags to receive the item, though, because the achievement is only awarded at the end of the game.

It took years to do in original. You gotta end the game at least 4 times on various difficulties with getting all collectibles

It would be nice if it was only on one of the difficulties, but I remember the collection screen listing every difficulty.

I'm so torn. On the one hand, it's awesome that there's an achievement for this, so that all that hard work actually gets recognised, so that you have some proof you actually did it. On the other hand, I kinda feel like curling up into a little ball and crying at the thought of doing it all again.

If I remember correctly there 394 dogtags total to collect across all difficulties.
For those who managed this in the original game, I bow before you. For those who are willing to go through this again, you are fucking insane.

Happy to see this on here. I got all of them in MGS2 on the PS2 and enjoyed every minute of it. The best part is once you start getting into the harder difficulties you've already unlocked items like the bandanna (infinite ammo) and the module which makes you invisible (can't remember exact name of the item) making it a cake walk. The hardest part was knowing which guards would easily give them up by showing them the tranq gun and which ones required a bit of persuasion ala a bullet to the arm or hand! lol

Ahh nice to see a hard achievement in this list, it wont be so hard once you know
which guards drop dogtag's and which ones need shooting in the arm for one,
since its coming late to UK i guess i might aswell play it for xbox 1 and get up
to scratch with it.

MGS2 came out before stackable achievements were a concept, and it hasn't been updated to save you the pain. Why play on easy or normal if you're good enough for extreme? WHY?!?!?! feajfkhacflhdD

@16: Because in MGS2: SoL, each difficulty level has it's own set of tags. Meaning the tags found in the hardest difficulty are not the same as those found on easy or normal etc.

Oh fuck, I had all dogtags up to the first boss on extreme and just couldnt get past it to collect more. I even had a fat as fuck guide but this shit will still be a bitch 10 years later. That is some fucking bastard shit. Only some guards in some areas with only one chance to get, and having to play on harder modes. Such bullshit.

I hate collectables.

Just got last night, was very surprised how easy it was, did it back in the day when I was 12 and it was a bitch for me, but I thought solidus was hella easy. As for the argument of which is harder, I'd say VR missions, though this is way more time consuming took me 29hrs for VR and 32hrs for great dane.

The sad thing is I found it far more frustrating doing all the pullup training than getting every tag on the PS2, the tags were kinda fun but improving your strength was a pain in the ass.

Saturday, February 04, 2012 @ 07:03:08 AM

you have to get behind them with out them knowing you are there "stick em up" then go round the front of them and point the gun in there face or groin, sometime they will be a little difficult so shoot them in one of thier arms or legs and then point at thier face again they will shake it loose. happy hunting

you seriously have to get every dog tag from every difficulty? If this includes the hardest difficulty of if you are just even spotted it's game over i will go crazy.

Wednesday, February 08, 2012 @ 06:31:09 AM

Guys check the forums, you ONLY NEED so much dog tags to UNLOCK ALL SPECIAL ITEMS (Stealth etc.). That means you can miss out on a few and you only have to do till EXTREME difficulty, no need for EUROPEAN EXTREME. So this one is quite doable IF YOU HOLD UP "EVERY" ENEMY that you come across. Job done!

Does anybody know the confirmed number of tags required to get stealth in both chapters?

Thursday, February 16, 2012 @ 06:11:21 PM

OK guys, here's a list of the rewards and how many dog tags you need:

Snake (Tanker):

Infinite bandana - 33 dog tags
Stealth camouflage - 78 dog tags
Raiden (Plant):

Brown Wig (infinite ammo) - 100 dog tags
Stealth camouflage - 120 dog tags
Orange Wig (infinite hanging meter) - 170 dog tags
Blue Wig (infinite O2 gauge) - 218 dog tags

Sunday, March 04, 2012 @ 01:33:03 PM

Urgh this is a stretch, im glad its only 218 tags though, means i only have to finish Extreme and collect the rest on Easy. Shame that Extreme is such a bitch with the boss fights when you're not very good :(

Tha fuck? There's supposed to be 3 guys in Hold No. 3 on Normal that have dog tags. Apparently one of them is on the balcony when you first enter Hold No. 3 on the balcony, right side. But for me there's nobody there :S I've finished Very Easy and Easy and he was there both times, but he isn't there on normal. Anybody else have this problem?

I finally got this after like 2 weeks.Honestly, the hardest part for me did not come until when I reached Extreme Mode, and even then I already had the stealth camo, brown wig,and orange wig.

I beat Solidus Snake's torture within literally an inch of Raiden's life with only 1% health, and NO rations,or bandages.

That took me about 3,or 4 days to finally beat him.

Was really glad I didn't have to do both the Tanker and Plant chalters on all difficulties. I was able to skip the Tanker on Hard and Extreme. It's not much, but still some time saved. Vamp on Extreme was by far the hardest part for me, everything else was pretty smooth.

Just finished the Virtually Impossible achievement today took me about 30 hours.. I remember playing this all summer long when I was like 12 such good times I loved this game I musta beat it 20 times over the summer and got all dog tags, I've beat so many games on ps2 its nice to have achievements that prove you did it.. guess time to become a great dane on xbox 360..

Friday, September 07, 2012 @ 03:17:31 PM

So I'm confused here... Technically you don't have to get all of the dog tags you just have to get enough for all of the unlockable items? And you will not unlock this achiev until you finish extreme? Can someone clear this up for me because I am confused... I thought u had to start from very easy get all tags, easy get all tags, normal get all tags.. And so on for every difficulty all the way up to extreme and even on extreme..

Ok I got this achievement when I finished the plant on extreme. I had done all of the difficulties leading up to it. I completely skipped the tanker and decided to go straight to the plant. When I finished I missed one on the plant but still got the achievement. As stated I did not do the tanker on extreme when I got this achievement. One must get all of the unlockables for all the characters for the achievement. Even though I probably go back to the plant on extreme and get the one dog tag I missed eventually.

Got to the Harrier on Extreme, but couldn't do it. Fuck whoever designed the lengthy boss battles and all their one hit kill attacks. I'm really glad to know that I wasted my time playing on all the other difficulties, only for Extreme to be such a ridiculous jump from Hard. To anyone who is on the fence regarding the achievement: don't fucking bother.

My genuine congratulations to anyone able enough to stomach the utter bollocks that are the Extreme boss battles. Fortune pissed me off, Fatman was easy, and the Harrier broke me. I don't even want to imagine what the rest of the game is like.

Monday, October 13, 2014 @ 11:55:39 AM

@61, I'm assuming the part with the Harrier you are struggling with is when it starts that volley of missiles?

If so, I also had a problem until I discovered this little gem:

Before the missiles are launched and the camera pans to show the Shell 1-2 connecting bridge from left to right, you should already be on the staircase.
By pressing your back to the wall, and finding the right location to stand in, you can avoid all damage without moving

You will know you have the right location when you are pressed against that wall and you start moving up or down the staircase whilst still flattened to the wall. The camera will show Raiden from a lower right. If that happens, crouch down while pressed against the wall and you shouldn't get hit.
It worked for me.

Anyway, don't give up.
