Introduction:
Welcome to Microsoft Treasure Hunt, a free game that is based almost entirely on the concept of Minesweeper but converted into an adventure game. How the game works is that each level is a board of dirt tiles that you must uncover to make your way to the level's exit on the opposite end of the screen. Underneath some of those dirt tiles are traps (or mines, for people familiar with Minesweeper), and nearby tiles have numbers under them which indicate how many mines that tile touches. The main difference between this and Minesweeper is that you have health (hearts) so it isn't game over if you uncover a trap, and you've got some other items at your disposal to help you work through each level. It's a cool twist on the Minesweeper formula, and the achievements are all relatively simple. For a free game, it's definitely worth a play.

Walkthrough:
WARNING!: There have been multiple reports of losing all progress toward upgrades when the game freezes or crashes. Freezing and crashing can happen for multiple reasons, most commonly if the tablet reaches low battery or when completing bonus levels. For this reason, it is highly recommended to only play this game with your tablet plugged into a power source. If you finish a bonus level and are stuck and can't move and the game seems frozen, go back to the main menu. You'll be back at the start of the level and have to play through it again, but you will retain all of your gold and upgrade progress instead of having to start from scratch.

Theoretically all of the achievements can be unlocked in a single playthrough, but don't sweat it if you miss some. All of the missable achievements are unlocked in the first dozen levels, so it's very easy to come back to them. Since it's much easier to get all of the achievements in two playthroughs, here's how to go about doing that:

Playthrough 1:
The focus of this very short playthrough will be to unlock "Efficient Shopper". Play through the first level and collect all of the gold so that you can buy an Amulet at the Mummy Shop after level 1. Buy the Amulet and then proceed. Collect gold and monitor it closely so you have exactly 600 gold. Follow the achievement description for "Efficient Shopper". Once you've gotten that achievement out of the way, that concludes your first playthrough, which will likely end on level 3. Now on to your second (and hopefully final) playthrough.

Playthrough 2:
Here you'll be getting the rest of the missable achievements. Firstly, you're going to play through the first 2 levels without collecting any gold to unlock "Money is Evil". Secondly, you're going to have to get to level 12 without dying to unlock "Didn't Even Break a Sweat". And lastly, you've going to have to play level 11 and beat it without using any flags to unlock "Extra Careful". Once you've got those three achievements out of the way, play through like normal, purchasing upgrades and collecting as much gold as possible. Refer to the "I'm Rich!" achievement description for the best way to collect a lot of gold. The only other achievement you'll need to consciously be aware of and try for is "Why did it have to be Bats?" for defeating 5 bats in a row without any other monsters in between. Refer to that achievement description for more detail.

The achievements mentioned above will all be unlocked pretty early, relatively, in your time playing this game. You'll then have to spend the rest of the time getting to higher and higher levels to amass enough gold to buy all of the upgrades and to amass a cumulative total of gold large enough to unlock "I'm Rich!" All of the rest of the achievements will come naturally while attempting to get more gold and unlock all of the upgrades. Those will be the last two achievements you unlock. Feel free to start new playthroughs whenever you feel you need to, as most of the achievements are cumulative.

Conclusion:
Microsoft Treasure Hunt is a very simple and fun game, although it can definitely get very repetitive having to play through dozens and dozens of levels that look almost the same in order to unlock all of the achievements. The achievements themselves though are not difficult by any means and will all unlock quite easily. This game is a fun little time-waster that can actually be completed relatively quickly if you're good at Minesweeper. If not, you still shouldn't pass up this game, as it can be quite fun in small doses.

Pyromaniac10
Purchase the 8 Dynamite Bag

See "Totally Decked Out" achievement description.

Master Miner10
Purchase the 10 Pickaxe Belt

See "Totally Decked Out" achievement description.

No Sense of Direction10
Purchase the 15 Map Tube

See "Totally Decked Out" achievement description.

Death Cannot Stop Me!10
Purchase 3 Amulets in one game

An Amulet is available for purchase each time you enter a Mummy Shop, but you can only have one Amulet purchased at any given time. An Amulet basically acts as an extra life - if you die, you'll respawn if you own an Amulet. Since you can only own one Amulet at a time, you'll have to buy one, die, buy a second, die, and then buy a third to unlock the achievement.

This will likely come naturally while playing. Note that Amulets go up in price each time you die and buy a new one, so you will need to progress to make enough money to keep buying more. Even so, by the time you reach level 10 or so, you'll easily have enough money to kill yourself twice to buy three Amulets, if you so please.

King of Compassion15
Have 5 hearts

See "Totally Decked Out" achievement description.

Bonus Level Bonanza10
Collect 1000 gold in bonus levels   (1)

Bonus levels appear randomly in levels and look like stairs leading down, identical to the achievement tile. In a bonus level, you'll be given a set time limit to collect as much gold as possible. If you trigger a trap, the bonus level will automatically end. Note that this achievement is cumulative and does not need to be done in a single bonus level, so this will easily come naturally. Once levels 30+ are reached, it is easily possible to get over 30,000 gold in a single bonus level.

Extra Careful10
Reach the exit on level 11 without using any flags

Naturally this achievement is missable, since if you use any flags on level 11, you'll have to start a new game and get to level 11 again to attempt this achievement again. Thankfully level 11 is still pretty easy, since most of the numbered tiles are 1 through 4 and the level can therefore be managed without having to do any guessing. Just remember where traps are and make sure to consciously be aware you cannot place any flags. If you're struggling, you can always do this on a new game after you've unlocked some upgrades so you can use dynamite and pickaxes to sort through the traps. DO NOT use a map. This will automatically place flags and void the achievement. As mentioned though, this level is early enough that no guessing should be necessary.

Once you reach the exit on level 11, the achievement will unlock.

Didn’t even Break a Sweat!15
Reach level 12 without dying or respawning   (2)

This achievement requires you to beat the first 11 levels without dying (or respawning, but that's redundant). You can use as many pickaxes, dynamite, and maps to get to the end of each level, just make sure you don't lose all your hearts.

The first 11 levels are naturally the easiest, and all of them can be cleared without having to guess where traps are. If you find yourself struggling, you can always play and unlock more upgrades, then come back and try this again when you have more hearts or more items to help you.

Efficient Shopper10
Enter a shop with at least 500 gold and spend down to exactly 0 before you leave   (1)

This one is a little tricky since each time you visit a Mummy Shop after 5 levels, the prices of all of the items (aside from the Amulet) go up, so it's very hard to plan ahead to have exactly enough money to spend it all on things. Thankfully Amulet prices are the same every time, so that's the one thing you can plan on. The first Amulet costs 50 gold, and is available after level 1, so buy that. The second Amulet (which you can buy after dying once) costs 100 gold. The third Amulet costs 500 gold. Since the achievement requires you to have at least 500 gold, you won't be able to do this until the third Amulet. You will also have to be very careful when collecting gold. Here's what to do:

After level 1, buy the Amulet for 50 gold. Now play through levels and collect exactly 600 gold (enough for the second and third Amulets). Be extremely careful to ensure you'll end up with exactly 600. Be aware of whether you have the clover that doubles your gold collected. Once you've got 600 gold, kill yourself, buy the second Amulet for 100 gold, kill yourself again, buy the third Amulet for 500 gold, and when you exit the shop the achievement will unlock.

I’m Rich! 10
Gather 5000000 gold

Note that this achievement is cumulative and does not need to be done in a single playthrough.

Gold comes in many shapes and sizes throughout the levels. It starts as small coins and eventually turns into jewels and gems as you progress to higher and higher levels, with each being worth increasingly more gold. Gold items will eventually reach a maximum value around level 30 or so, and at that point the treasure chests, which are often behind walls, are worth the most amount of money. Naturally you'll want to uncover as many tiles as possible in each level to collect all of the gold in each level. However, there are some tips that will help you get as much gold as possible. Here's the best way to maximize the gold you collect:

  1. Every fifth level (level 5, 10, 15, etc.), which is the last level before a Mummy Shop, will ALWAYS contain a bunch of treasure chests behind walls. Because of this ALWAYS save your dynamite for these levels.
  2. Playing a bonus level automatically grants you a clover power-up which doubles the value of all gold you collect. To exploit this, DO NOT collect gold during the level until after you uncover as many tiles as possible. If you collect all of the gold in the level only to uncover a bonus level near the end, you just missed out on doubling all of the gold you just collected in that level.
  3. Putting 1 and 2 together, if you find a bonus level on one of the fifth levels, you stand to make a ridiculous amount of profit if you use your dynamite to uncover all of the treasure chests after you've gotten the clover power-up.
  4. Because of the previous 3 tips, ALWAYS refill your dynamite bag completely at every Mummy Shop. Once you find a bonus level and double the value of all gold, you'll want to collect everything in the level to get as much gold as possible.
  5. Always check the entire map for bonus levels. When you get to the later levels (30+), you'll be getting a solid 32,000 gold per bonus level. Sometimes you'll even get double that, and leave a bonus level with a hefty 64,000 gold!

This will likely be one of the last achievements unlock in this game, especially depending on how long it takes for all of the upgrades to show up in the Mummy Shop for you. You can view your progress at the main menu to see your cumulative total.

Good Start10
Reach the exit on level 1

This achievement will unlock upon completing the first level, and will likely be one of the first achievements to unlock. The first level is very simple and has very few traps.

Apprentice Hunter10
Defeat 3 monsters

Monsters show up in a few different forms and will typically be blocking your path in various levels. They appear in levels completely randomly. To defeat them (which you'll have to do to get past them to get to the exit) you'll have to find an arrow hidden beneath a random tile in the level. Once you have an arrow, you can click on the monster to defeat it and get by. Arrows can only be used once though. If you find a machete, it can be used an unlimited amount of times in that level but you won't be able to bring it with you to the next level. This achievement is cumulative and is therefore almost unavoidable while playing through to get the other achievements.

No Stone Unturned10
Dig all dirt tiles without traps on any level

This achievement requires that every single tile is uncovered aside from the ones with traps under them. This is incredibly easy to do in the first few levels, and it's a good practice to get in the habit of regardless, since you'll want to uncover as many tiles as possible to collect as much gold as possible. Using chording will make this go really quickly, and will likely be the method used to uncover all tiles in each level. Refer to "King of Chording" achievement description for more detail on chording.

We need More Explosions! 10
Use a dynamite 8 times during one level

Naturally before you can get this achievement you'll need to have upgraded your dynamite bag capacity to at least 8 so you can bring 8 dynamite into a level with you. One you've got the 8 dynamite bag, you'll have to buy at least 8 dynamite in a Mummy Shop. Then if you so please, you can just use all 8 dynamite in a row in the next level to unlock the achievement.

Maybe Invest in a GPS10
Use a map 20 times

This achievement is cumulative and is therefore unlocked pretty naturally over the course of playing the game. As you get to later levels where some guessing is unavoidable, and especially in areas with high tiles numbers (4, 5, and 6), you'll often be caught in situations where you'd have to guess for multiple mines surrounding you. It's much more efficient in these situations to use a map, which will reveal all mines in a set area around you. Because of the way the map reveals mines, it's a good idea to get as "deep" into uncovered tiles as possible before using the map so you can uncover as many potential mines as possible. Use 20 over the course of your entire time playing the game and the achievement will unlock.

Why did it have to be Bats?10
Defeated 5 bats without defeating any other monsters in-between

This one is a little annoying/tricky because, first of all, monsters appearing in a level at all is completely random; secondly, if there are monsters in a level, it's extremely unlikely there will be 5 bats; thirdly, in order to beat a level, you'll often have monsters blocking your path that are not bats, and will therefore reset progress toward this achievement if you defeat them.

Because of that, this is much easier done in later levels once you've upgraded your map and dynamite capacity. As you come to a level with monsters, use arrows to kill all bats in the level. If any non-bat monsters are blocking your path, you're going to have to use dynamite to blow through a wall to get around the monster without defeating it. You'll likely need to play through a dozen or so levels at a minimum until you see enough bats to defeat five, unless you get really lucky.

King of Chording5
Dig 1000 dirt tiles by "chording" (placing flags on nearby traps and tapping the adjacent tiles)

Once you know what chording is and get the hang of how to do it, this achievement will easily come naturally. If you've ever played Minesweeper, then you'll already be used to chording constantly. How it works is when you uncover a numbered tile, let's say a 1 in this example, once you mark the 1 trap touching that numbered 1 tile with a flag, you can click on the 1 and it will automatically uncover all remaining non-trap tiles that the 1 tile is touching. Be careful though! If you have put flags on tiles that are NOT traps, when you attempt to chord you will uncover traps and lose a heart, sometimes multiple if you were wrong multiple times!

If you're new to this type of game, just get in the habit of once you know where traps are, click on the number to uncover non-trap tiles and this achievement will be done with well before many of the others.

Money is Evil5
Reached level 3 without picking up any gold or treasure   (2)

This achievement is only difficult in the sense that you have to be very careful in the first 2 levels to make sure you don't accidentally pick up gold as you're working your way toward the exit. Just take it slow and don't make your character walk long distances at a time, since his path is often unpredictable and could lead you to picking up gold that you didn't intend. Once you reach level 3 (after beating level 2) the achievement will unlock.

Totally Decked Out10
Purchased all item and heart upgrades for your character

This will likely be one of the last, if not the last, achievements unlocked in this game. Note that this does NOT need to be done in a single playthrough. It is cumulative over all playthroughs There are 4 things you need to max out to unlock this achievement: pickaxe capacity, dynamite capacity, map capacity, and hearts. You start with a capacity of 2 pickaxes, 2 dynamite, 2 maps, and 3 hearts. The achievement unlocks when you have a capacity of 30 pickaxes, 30 dynamite, 30 maps, and 5 hearts. Here's how the progression works for pickaxes, dynamite, and maps:

2 -> 4 -> 6 -> 8 -> 10 -> 15 -> 20 -> 25 -> 30

For hearts, it's much simpler: 3 -> 4 -> 5

So in total, you'll need 8 pickaxe upgrades, 8 dynamite bag upgrades, 8 map tube upgrades, and 2 heart upgrades to unlock this achievement. A total of 26 upgrades. Unfortunately each upgrade level for an item gets more expensive than the previous level.

As for how to get upgrades, every five levels (starting after level 5/before level 6, after level 10/before level 11, etc.), you will have access to the Mummy Shop where you can buy an amulet, an upgrade, and more dynamite, maps, and pickaxes. Unfortunately, first off you can only buy one upgrade per visit to the Mummy Shop; secondly, the upgrades are randomly generated so you'll never know what you'll have the option to buy; thirdly, there's a chance you'll be offered 4 or 8 shields instead of an upgrade, essentially meaning a missed opportunity to buy an upgrade.

Since you need 26 upgrades and you only enter the shop every 5 levels, that means you'd have to get to level 130+ to unlock all of the upgrades in a single playthrough. Of course there's the option to start a new game, but if you're missing the last couple upgrades for each item, they will be very expensive and you'll likely not have enough gold to afford them until level 25 or so, and if they show up before then you'll be very frustrated you missed them.

Thankfully once you've got a ton of money (in the millions) when you get to level 30+, there's a way you can visit the Mummy Shop multiple times in a row. This is particularly useful when you only need 1-2 more upgrades. Once you've got a lot of money, make sure you also own an Amulet. When you die and respawn with an Amulet, you'll automatically be set back to the previous Mummy Shop you visited (for example, if you died on level 29, you'll be set back to the Mummy Shop after level 25/before level 26). The Mummy Shop will repopulate, so buy another Amulet, and if a new upgrade shows up, buy that too. Kill yourself again and repeat the process. Depending on how much money you have, you'll be able to do this a handful of times before the Amulets get ridiculously expensive and you can't afford to keep killing yourself. However you should be able to do it 4-7 times before then, depending on how much money you saved up and if you used any Amulets before then. For building up lots of money, refer to the I'm Rich achievement description.

WARNING: One last very important warning about this achievement. There have been multiple reports of the game crashing if the tablet reaches a low battery warning, and if this happens mid-game, the game will crash and you will lose all upgrades! This happened to me once when I had 4 upgrades left and is extremely frustrating. It is highly recommended to play this game with your tablet plugged in just to be safe, or at least never let it get to low battery!

Had to Happen Sometime10
Triggered your first trap   (1)

As the achievement description says, this achievement will unlock when you uncover your first trap. Of course you could force it and purposely uncover a trap on the first level, but this one is virtually unavoidable throughout the course of the game.
