After completing your rookie contract (2 years+team option 3rd year.) you will be able to negotiate a new contract.
If you play poorly your second year the team may not pick up their option on you, however this will make it much more difficult to get a contract worth 10m. Its best to just play good for the first 3 seasons. At the end of the 3rd season you will be able to negotiate a new contract, Look for any offer either over 10m, or over 9m and try to ask for for more money to get you over the 10m hump.
From what I read if teams are only offering you 7-8m per year, you may be unable to get them to pay you 10, its best in that situation to take a 1 year deal at the 7-8m and play very good that year, and go through the entire process again and look for a 10m contract.
