Introduction:
Welcome to Raystorm HD, an updated classic shooter orginally released for the PSOne. A number of changes have been made from the original, such as ranking leaderboards and a new mode called "13 Plane Mode".

Though there's co-op, its only local and all achievements are strictly Single Player. Also, whether or not you're skilled in this game, the two achievements, "LOCKON DOWN 10000 UNIT" and "SHOOTINGDOWN 15000 UNIT", will take quite some time to earn.

Regardless, the difficulty setting doesn't effect your achievements and once you earn "UNLOCK UNLIMITED CREDITS," earning the rest of the "Easy 6" should take 3-5 hours. While the "Hard 6" will really push your skills and patience.

Step 1: Unlimited Credits:
From the start, go to Help & Options > Configuration and change the difficulty to "Very Easy", change Lives to "1" and Credits to "9". From here, play either Arcade or Extra until you get a game over. Do this six times and after getting a game over for the sixth time, the achievement will pop-up when you return to the menu screen.

Step 2: The Easy 6 (80):
With one down, it's time to get the other 5 achievements. Head back to Help & Options > Configuration and change Lives to "5" and Credits to "Unlimited". Now head to "Extra Mode" for "R-GEAR ROLLOUT." Choose your R-Gray and set to auto for earning "OVERALL SHOOTING DOWN AVERAGE 80%." While playing, focus as much as the small targets as possible and use the special attack when the screen gets very crowded. This is a must during the sixth stage, as the screen quickly fills up when getting close to the boss fight.

Now with the R-Gear available, head to Arcade for "R-GRAY0 ROLLOUT," and "OVERALLL LOCKON AVERAGE 80%." The one thing the game doesn't explain is what the "Lockon Showdown" means. Its a weapon kill ratio, i.e if all the kills made in a stage is mostly shots and special attacks, the lockon percentage would be low. With the R-Gear's unlimited lockon and a special attack that makes it temporarily invincible, its possible to play an entire game with Lockon ONLY. Using lockon only in every stage will net you "100% lockon showdown" guaranteed. Regardless of how many enemies missed or the number of times you die. By now, you should also have earned the "UNLOCK 13 PLANE MODE" achievement. This should take about 3-5 hours to get this.

Step 3: The Hard 6 (120):
From here, there's no more hand holding. "13 Plane Mode" will put your skills to the test as you use one specialty ship (R-Gear or R-Gray0) and twelve standard ships (R-Gray1 and R-Gray2, both auto and manual) in a one credit playthrough. Now, select 13 Plane Mode > Extra Mode, as its easier, and go for "UNLOCK EXTRA STAGE SELECT MODE" and "UNLOCK RATE VIEWER." A useful tip to completing "13 Plane Mode" is to try not to lose at least one ship for the first three stages.

Once that's done, you can go back to 13 Plane Mode for "UNLOCK ARCADE STAGE SELECT MODE" or go straight to the standard Arcade/Extra for "NO CONTINUE CLEAR," if you've really gotten good. If you have gotten this far, or gotten a game over a lot, you should be one step closer to "LOCKON DOWN 10000 UNIT" and "SHOOTING DOWN 15000 UNIT"

Conclusion:
Raystorm HD is one of the few classics that's greatly enjoyed with friends. Its such a shame that there's only local co-op and that all achievements are restricted to single player. If your very good with shooters, getting most of the achievements should be a cake walk, while the two Unit achievements will take hours. Raystorm HD is still a good game to pick up for nostalgia lovers and for those looking for a shooter with an easier learning curve.

There are 12 achievements with a total of 200 points

  • Complete single player 13 PLANE ARCADE MODE!

13 Plane Mode is a challenge mode with preset options. That means any changes in the Help & Options menu will NOT work in this mode.

The game difficulty is set to Normal, there are no credits and you can only use 6 Manual Control Ships (3 R-Gray 1 and 3 R-Gray 2), 6 Auto Control Ships (3 R-Gray 1 and 3 R-Gray 2) and 1 Specialty Ship (R-Gear or R-Gray 0). Also, all power-ups that you pick up will only be for the ship you're currently using. Which means, depending on the situation, an upgraded standard ship (3 Lives), can do more than an upgraded Specialty (1 Live). The only advantage you have, is what order you want your ships to appear.

    For example:
    1st - R-Gray 1 (M) x3
    2nd - R-Gray 0 x1
    3rd - R-Gray 2 (A) x3
    4th - R-Gray 2 (M) x3
    5th - R-Gray 1 (A) x3

    or
    1st - R-Gray 2 (A) x3
    2nd - R-Gray 1 (A) x3
    3rd - R-Gear x1
    4th - R-Gray 2 (M) x3
    5th - R-Gray 1 (M) x3

This achievement will pop up after completing 13 Plane Arcade Mode and unlock the Stage Select for Arcade.

  • Complete single player 13 PLANE EXTRA MODE!

Same rules apply from 13 Plane Arcade. Completing 13 Plane Extra Mode will net you the achievement and unlock the Stage Select for Extra.

  • Complete single player ARCADE MODE and EXTRA MODE!

This achievement will come naturally after beating both Arcade and Extra. It will pop up once you beat the True Final Boss and Unlock 13 Plane Mode.

  • Complete single player ARCADE MODE!

Here's a quick rundown of the game:
There are 8 Stages, 7 Regular Stages and a True Final Boss.

Now, go to Help & Options > Configuration and change the Difficulty to "Very Easy", Player Stock to "5" and, if unlocked, change Credit Limit to "Unlimited". Completing Arcade will net you the achievement and a new ship, R-Gray 0, a manual-only ship with powerful Shots and Lock-On but no Special Attack.

  • Complete single player EXTRA MODE!

You'll be surprised how many power-ups show up in Extra mode than in Arcade, especially the the last part of Stage 7. Just like Arcade, finishing Extra will net you the achievement and a new ship, R-Gear, a manual-only ship with homing rockets for shots, lasers with Unlimited Lock-On, and a Special Attack that makes it temporarily invincible.

  • Complete single player 13 PLANE ARCADE MODE or EXTRA MODE!

No matter which version of 13 Plane Mode you complete first, you'll also unlock this achievement with it and the "Rate Viewer".

The "Rate Viewer" is simply a separate leaderboard for Stage Select, showing your performance, for each stage's Score, Destroyed Percentage and Lock-On Percentage.

  • Use 50 total credits in single player.

Go to Help & Options > Configuration and change the Credit Limit to 9 and the Player Stock to 1. Play either Arcade or Extra and allow yourself to die until you get a Game Over. Do it this way for six games (9x6=54) and the achievement will pop up when you return to the menu.

  • In single player, get an average lock-on percentage of 80% on all stages!

At the end of every stage, is the Results, showing your score, percentage of enemies destroyed and percentage of Lock-On kills.

This achievement requires that your total kills are mostly Lock-On. You DO NOT have to destroy every ship in the level. You just have to make sure that most of your kills are Lock-On only. It's best done with R-Gear since the ship's Lock-On plays a little differently. Along with the Invincibility Special Attack the ship has and the Unlimited Credits, you can play an entire game on Lock-On ONLY and get 100% Lock-On Kills on every stage, GUARANTEED. The achievement will pop up at the end of Stage 7.

  • In single player, get an average kill ratio of 80% on all stages!

At the end of every stage, is the Results, showing your score, percentage of enemies destroyed and percentage of Lock-On kills.

The only real challenge to this achievement is Stage 3, as all the large-scale enemy battleships are included in the destroyed percentage and they can only be destroyed through Lock-On. Its best to use either any R-Gray Ship on Auto or the R-Gear and shoot EVERYTHING. Do this for every Stage and the achievement will pop up at the end of Stage 7.

  • In single player, accumulate a total of 10,000 lock-on kills!

Like "SHOOTINGDOWN 15000 UNIT", this achievement will pop in the middle of the game and there's no option showing how many lock-on kills you've made. However, earning one of them is a clear sign that you're close to earning the other one.

  • In single player, accumulate a total of 15,000 kills!

Unlike the rest of the achievements, this one will pop up in the middle of the game and it accumulates from all game modes. However, there's no option showing how many kills you've made in total, so you'll have to keep playing until the achievement shows up.

  • Complete a single player game (excluding 13 PLANE MODE) with no continues!

Depending on your skills, this could be one of the earliest or the last achievement you'll earn. Thankfully, its for standard Arcade or Extra. So go to Help & Options > Configuration and change the Difficulty to "Very Easy" and Player Stock to "5". Don't worry about the Credit Limit and be sure to pick the ship you're good with. Once you beat the True Final Boss, you'll unlock the achievement and some bragging rights.
