Mowing Them Down Achievement in Red Dead Redemption

  • Mowing Them Down

    20

Kill 500 enemies with a mounted weapon in any game mode.

  • How to unlock Mowing Them Down

All single player and multiplayer kills count towards this achievement. You will need to earn kills online or offline, they do not stack towards the same statistics.

You will encounter the Gatling Gun on a regular basis throughout the games story missions. when you do encounter the Gatling Gun kill as many people as possible. There are several missions where you will be told to use this gun.

    • Browning (Doesn't always register kills)
    • Gatling Gun
    • Cannon

If you unlock this while playing through the main story you will be very lucky. The best way to earn this achievement is to start a private free-roam session and head to the fort in Mexico called El Presidio. In this fort you will find several Cannons and a Gatling Gun. Once inside alert the army, you can now sit on a cannon or gun of choice and gun down the army as they come to arrest you. The cannon on the cliff edge on the northern side seems to be the best cannon to use.

    See "Long Arm of Marston"

  • Is this possible to attain by replaying missions in singleplayer, or do I have to go online and boost it?
  • You can't get it through replaying missions, but you can still get it on single player. Online is the fastest way to do it.
  • how would you get it in single player without replaying missions? I recall what... 3 or 4 missions where you get to use a mounted weapon?
  • @#3 - You can't as far as I'm aware, I finished with like 120 kills or something stupid like that. No way did I miss 400 blokes =P
  • I don't know if this actually works, but I tought about it one day and it may work. First, you got to know of a turret, then you go on a bounty hunter mission, you kill the target ang get the hell away to the turret. It won't stop comming people (y)
  • or go el matadero, one of the houses has a browning machinegun on top of it go most wanted and shoot al those lawman/friends or other players. single or multi player
  • Anybody think that if you tried to do this in the new coop missions it would unlock?
  • how do u save your progress in multiplayer because i don't want to do this in one shot?
  • Dang, you can't do it by replaying missions? There goes my idea :(
  • Cant do it doing the bounty hunter way, the persuing bandits just stop chasing once you get near to a settlement, and I cant think of anywhere that has a mounted weapon that is just on its own.
  • This achievement sucks :(
  • It's easier than you guys think. The area at the main gate of El Presidio CONSTANTLY spawns undead (You must be playing the Undead Nightmare single-player mode) so just climb up the first ladder and jump on the cannon. They usually spawn in groups, anywhere from 2 to 5 at a time. A well-centered cannonball will get the whole lot of them. The zombies will only spawn in areas you can't see on your screen so keep sweeping back and forth and you'll never run out of targets. In the Stats menu under "Combat" you'll find the entry "Undead killed with cannon." Mine was at zero and it took less than ten minutes to pop the achievement.
  • Hesa's method is legit and works quite quickly. Also just a note, all 500 kills must be in one game mode; you cant have 100 kills in normal RDR and 400 in Undead.
  • Confirmed, HesaBipolarBear ! now i'm playing Undead nightmare expansion set, and tried to get achievement via el presidio cannon + unlimited spaming undead. I got achievement, when i killed exactly 500 enemies, which concludes, that Red Dead Redemption (at least single player) and Undead nightmare kills DO NOT stack. SO if You have 490 kills in RDR single player, maybe you better finish the achievement there. Otherwise, its pretty fast and easy, might take less then an hour. Just stjart missing people poster missions in el presidio, and before going to pick up new person, shoot 100 zombies, then return person, then shoot 100 again, and so on:) its less annoying that way. Hope it helps :)
  • Thanks AHockeyGod.. I found that old machine gun on top of the house and got the achievement that way
  • I think I will be trying this one in Undead. Sounds like a winner. Just want to finish the story first.
  • In Undead this one's easy peacy. Btw its also more fun :)
  • For those who want to do this in single player mode it is possible but time-consuming. Use the browning gun on top of your house at El Matadero, wear your bureau outfit if you have it so as to keep the law of your back otherwise it becomes very tricky and wear your bandana also. If you have completed all story missions then you should already have 100-150 kills. Do it during daylight as there will be more people around, CIVILIANS DO COUNT on this and you should get very little gunfire back at you, save occasionally to be safe, took me about 75 boring hourse doing it this way to get the extra kills i needed.
  • By the way, once you hit 500 mounted weapon kills it probablys won't unlock the achievement for some unknown reason so just head to El Presidio and kill ONE person with any cannon or gun there and it should unlock the achievement. I guess multi-player or the Undead game would be faster to do it but for those who are not online and don't have the Undead Nightmare game then you can do it this way. I reccomend doing this after you have 100% game completion though as the bureau outfit makes things much easier.
  • CORRECTION, not 75 boring hours, i meant 75 very slow, dragging pain-staking minutes !!!
  • Yeah, just do it in Undead Nightmare. You can go from 0-500 in less than an hour.
  • Does it unlock in co-op missions?
  • The easist way, as i see it, is to do it on Multiplayer. Go into Free roam then go publi go public. Travel to El Presidio and use the gattling gun on the right side of the mainentrance. If die, just shoot a horse, dynamite collection or light in the couryard to spawn more soldiers which you just "mow down".
  • *Then go PRIVATE, not public :P
  • props to comment #20. I had over 600(mostly from browning on roof top) mounted kills with no achievement and tried going to the fort, got one kill and it unlocked. thanks buddy
  • @ #13 True, this is how i did it. Undead Nightmare, El Presidio, just keeps respawning new targets. Job done.
  • After beating the game in single player I already had about 150ish kills and it only took another 30 minutes to get the rest using the Browning machine gun in El Matadero. Like one poster above suggested, I used the Bureau outfit to keep the law off me and constantly mowed down respawning civilians that entered the village from either side. If you don't have the Bureau outfit it's not a big deal; you will just need to occasionally kill some law and it may take a little longer because no civilians will appear during that time.
  • I really recommend the El Matadero method! It may take some time (1 hour for me), but at least you don't have to worry about to much resistance!^^
  • Finding this so frustrating! Have gone to El Presidio in free-roam, as suggested, and every time I get myself wanted, I usually get to the cannon and there aren't many lawmen coming up the road for me to shoot at. After a while it doesn't matter because they swarm up behind me and shoot me anyway! Help!
  • I had 105 Gatling kills and 16 Cannon kills when I got my 100% stat achievement, leaving me with 379 to go! Using the Browning on the safe house roof in Mexico I got to my magic number of 379 after a few gruelling hours but nothing!! Thinking maybe the cannon kills dont count I killed another 16 people and still nothing!! I then took my Browning kills upto the 500 mark and yet still nothing, I now have a grand total of 625 kills (105 Gatling, 16 cannon and 504 Browning) still waiting for the pop up tho! Gonna head to El Presido and get a couple of gatling gun kills and have a go on the cannon. Fingers crossed!!!
  • *UPDATE* It worked, bit of a pain at El Presido as no-one seems to come throught the gate or walk down the road for that matter, a bounty popped up while I was there so I went after it knowing I would be chased for capturing or killing the bounty I set out. I killed the bounty in a moment of dead eye madness and returned to El presido without collecting my reward, I was chased as you are when killing a bounty but obviously you dont get chased into towns, so I killed 2 of my chasers, shot the horse of the third, lasso and hogtied him, dropped him before the El Presido gates, got on the cannon and blasted him into outer space... Achievement pops up with a cool 20GP!!
  • It might be just my game, but whenever I go to El Presidio and get the army after me, they either all go inside and stay there, OR they stand where I can't shoot them OR there's almost nobody out there WTF am I doing wrong?
  • I did this achievment and "Friends in High Places" at the same time. I went to El Matadero and killed everyone to get my wanted level up then got on the browning machine gun. It took a while but I soon had both 500 kills and a bounty of over $5000. Then all I did was head north to the small town thats like 30 seconds away and payed with the pardon letter and I now had 2 achievments.
  • Can someone help me out with this achievement? Send a message to HALFDEAD HITMAN on XBOX 360
  • This is hard to get D:
  • You can get this achievement in about 15-20 minutes if you go on undead nightmare and go to El Presidio, just go on one of the cannons at the front of the fort, zombies constantly spawn :) Have fun blowing up zombies :)
  • I agree with IGNs idea. Go to El Presidio in Mexico then shoot a barrel of tnt, or throw a stick of dynamite. Law men should come your way, so just mount to the cannon at the enterance. This should only take like 30 minutes.
  • I did this in Undead Nightmare. The undead are just bunch into 3 groups around El Preidio, just pick whichever spot u like best and use the cannons on them. Fastest way for sure, if you have the expansion
  • what is the fastest way to get this achievement?
  • Does anyone know a faster way to get this without the Undead Nightmare pack? I had a go at using the cannon at El Presidio, but the lawmen were only arriving at a rate of one every 30 seconds or so.
  • ANYBODY WANT TO WORK ON THIS ONE HIT ME UP
  • Got mine by doing the same thing as comment 13
  • I got mine the same was as comment 13 aswell.
  • I gotta try the Zombie way, I tried the El Presidio the regular way and got fustrated and usually ended up killed from behind.
  • The undead way is correct i just did it like that go to the front gate of el presidio and start killin zombies and you will have your achievement in no time (of course you have to have the undead nigthmare pack)
  • this took me 12 minutes, while playing in 100% complete undead mode. easy peasy, tnx for the tips :)
  • I got this with the undead nightmare, haha it was pretty funny see the zombies fly >:]
  • UnDeaD is the easiest and most fun...like eating chips...hard to have just one...
  • The El Presidio cannon is the easiest way to get this by far, in undead nightmare though.
  • doing this in el matadero, might i suggest saving a few times while attempting this, my game just crashed after about an hour of doing this, was not impressed
  • in multiplayer private free roam if you die do your kills still count or do you have to start over?
  • comment #13 best idea ever went by so quick
  • just do this on Undead Nightmare no one will come up from behind you nor shoot you out of nowhere at El Presidio with the cannons they keep respawning.
  • Remember to save often! If you die the kills that you accrued also disappear. :-( I now have another 400 to go.
  • El Presidio on Undead Nightmare is where I got this. Easy.
  • @HesaBipolarBear great method; no other is needed. Thanks! :)
  • Thanks comment #13, that is the easiest possible way to get this achievement. Quick and painless!
  • I'm willing to help anybody with any achievement/challenges for the price of 20 headshots per achievement/5 per challenge. My gt: IKV91.
  • I did this in El Matadero as I prefer the original RDR setting to the Undead Nightmare. With the Bureau Outfit its actually very simple and fun, just follow this trick I found out: Rush-Hour in El Matadero is between 2pm and 6pm. While these 4 hours people will constantly spawn from both sides. You should be able to take down about 150 people in this time. After 6pm climb down the ladder, go to your room and SAVE 3 (!!) times. This way you end up at about 1pm the next day, so just before rush-hour :) Do this 3 times - click - achievement will pop up. Took me about 35 minutes.
  • just got 510 deaths in El Matadero and the achievement didnt popped out ! any1 help me
  • I did it. If you wanna get this achievement in Single Player, the best way to do it is in El Matadero.. but what happened to me was that I got more than 500 deaths with that gun there and the achievement didnt pop out.. so, what I did was go to El Presidio and just kill one person with the cannon over there.. than, the achievement will appear. Hope this can help somebody !
  • El Presidio in Undead Nightmare did the trick for me. Just man a cannon and start pounding.
  • I found the best way to do this is if you have the Undead Nightmare pack. Go to El Presidio and use the mounted cannon. There is an infinite amount of zombies that constantly spawn right there at the gate by the cannon. Takes maybe 20 minutes give or take to acquire this achievement. Have fun!!
