Spurred to Victory Achievement in Red Dead Redemption

  • Spurred to Victory

    10

Complete 20 story missions without switching to a new horse at a hitching post.

  • How to unlock Spurred to Victory

You will start the game with a default horse; you can either change your horse or stick to the one you are given. Just progress through the story without swamping your horse for 20 story missions.

I suggest you do this from the start of the game and progress through all the story missions until the achievement unlocks. You can hitch your horse, though if you mount another horse by mistake and hitch that one you will loose your progress.

You don't need to hitch your horse in this game so there is no real need. You can call your horse at any time by pressing and the horse you have always used will come running. If your horse dies your counter for this achievement will reset.

  • can the story missions be gang hideouts?
  • Do bounty hunting missions and random missions count?
  • My advice for this achievement is there is a Bonnie mission you have to do and in the mission you have to lasso horses and break them, during this mission you will evetually break a stallion and Bonnie will levyou keep it. My advice is to use that stallion for the rest of the game and you should get the achievement
  • i don't understand what you have to do for this achievement
  • #4 you need to complete 20 story missions with the same horse over and over without switching to a new horse, so the best thing you could do is to do this achievement as early as possible
  • I've definitly used the same horse 4 20 mission, infact i used the same horse 4 the entrie game!!I download the warhorse which i got free with the game and i didn't get this achievement.Just a heads up!! Can i use an in game horse and replay missons to get it?
  • There are some mission where you will be chasing someone and it will say mount a horse and follow ....... dont mount a random horse, always whistle.. always.. this one is toughto get, you might have to play thought twice just to get it..
  • I cant use the same trought all game... my horse die some time later I arrives to Mexico... I mean... die of old! and appears other horse.
  • Yeah!... me too happen that!
  • I am a little confused on this too. There are missions where I am forced to ride a carriage and missions where it forced me to ride a horse that was not mine...I whistled and my horse never came..just blinked on screen. Do carriages and doing the horsebreaking job reset this? or is it just riding a random horse.
  • What messes up this achievement is when you get a new horse by buying or hitching one that isn't yours. Your horse isn't that smart, it will go over the edge of a cliff if it gets in the way. You do have to keep an eye out for it. The easiest way to get this achievement is to start from the first mission in the game and keep that horse for the first 20 missions. Bonnie will give you a new horse, but it won't count as changing horses. Neither will riding carriages. Red Dead does have 57 storyline missiosn, so if you mess up on one, you still have a way to go before you run out of luck. If your horse dies or randomly changes, the best thing to do is start from a previous save, especially if you're only a few missions away from the ach.
  • Amen to the #11! I was thinking to write the same! That's how it worked for me and gave the achievement just after the first Irish storymission
  • @#6 & everyone else Anyone know if you can achieve this by doing replays of the story missions after they are completed? As in replay 20 story missions one after the other using the same horse.
  • does it count as a "new horse" if your old horse dies? because once when i was fighting some bandits on horses right as i was about to shoot the last one, my dumba** horse rides up right in front of me and i shoot it in the neck and he dies -.-
  • @#14 yes it does, that's what screwed me. My horse fell off a cliff & died!
  • For this achievement, simply restart the game and just whistle for a horse to come to you, which ever horse comes to you, just ride it. that's what I did and it took me 21 story missions, seeing as though Bonnie gives you that new one and it resets right there. It only works with the main story missions as far as I know. I did 18 story mission and 4 Strangers missions, and it didn't unlock, so that's just from my experience. Your best bet is just to restart and just focus on the main quests that have the letters as indicators. Do West Dickens, Marshall, Seth and 1 of Irish's and you should unlock it. I recommend doing it in 1 sitting and by not saving at a house. If you must save, do it at a campsite for your horse doesn't get hitched with those. Just trying to help :)
  • This also might be handy for some of you that want it straight forward. It came straight from this sites, this achievements, achievements guide: You will start the game with a default horse; you can either change your horse or stick to the one you are given. Just progress through the story without swamping your horse for 20 story missions. I suggest you do this from the start of the game and progress through all the story missions until the achievement unlocks. • Do all the missions for bonnie first and once you get the horse from her keep that one, if it dies, reload your last auto save and carry on. you should then get the achievement about 2 or 3 missions into Mexico.
  • @#18 Don't even need to do that. The horse you get from Miss McFarlane is given to you via natural story progression. I.e., you didn't change horses at a HITCHING POST. This stallion will NOT reset your status. If you complete all the missions for Bonnie, The Marshall, West Dickens and Seth without changing horses, this achievement will pop after the first Irish mission, as stated several times above. What I've found works for me is to only use the horse to travel TO mission destinations. Once there, before any bullets start to fly I dismount so as not to get it killed by crossfire. Also be careful on that first Irish mission. The yellow blip is on the edge of a cliff so SLOW UP before you get there to reduce the risk of going over.
  • This achievements is terrible. AAHHHHH!
  • I just got the achievement and I learned that you have to do 20 story missions, stranger missions don't count, and also the mission where you have to break the houses for Bonnie and she lets you keep the Kentucky Saddler doesn't count as a new horse so it wont mess with the achievement at all. If you do the first 20 story missions without changing horses, excluding the one Bonnie lets you keep, then you will get it. Now there is one mission for Seth that he has you distract these lawmen from the place they keep Moses and it wants you to steal one of there horses. I didn't steal the horse I just shot one of them and kept my horse. I'm not sure if stealing one of their horses will negate the achievement so I wouldn't try if I were any of you. Hope that helps!
  • I got it on mission 21, as many others have said. I used the given horse until the the mission with Bonnie when she gave me a different one. I turned off auto save and saved on my own every mission or 2. Now then, one time my horse died around mission 17 and then I continued without saving until mission 22 and DID NOT get the achievement. So, I reloaded the game that I had saved before I died and then replayed the missions without dying and I got it at 21 as I stated earlier.
  • If you follow the story from the start and just ride the horses you been told to ride ride than you get it.
  • I am reading all of these posts because I am having a hard time unlocking this achievement. I completed the game %100 and this was the one I missed. I have started a new game, and I have only used the preordered unlocked war horse the entire time. I have not hitched a horse or bought a deed to a horse and I have played twenty story based missions, without killing my horse. I am going to keep playing through on into Mexico, but I thought there might be a reason for the delay of this achievement. I don't think having the war horse makes a difference, but if it does, please post something about it. I thought having the war horse would give me the advantage on this achievement and I would have unlocked it before Mexico
  • Terrible achievement... 1 there is no reason to hitch your horse during the game.. 2 Your stupid horse always goes and gets itself killed... and if you miss it (like I did ) you have to go through and play 1/3 of the game for a 10g achievement... stupid
  • this is one of the stupidest achievements ever. i would have had this a long time ago if my dumb ass horses didnt keep going and getting killed like morons. one time when i rode up to a group of enemies and started Dead Eyeing them, my genius horse decided the best idea would be to run right in FRONT of me right then. suffice it to say i ended up gunning down my own horse. what a POS achievement.
  • Does anyone know if this can be done by playing through the Undead Nightmare DLC? I really don't want to have to start a new game...
  • my horse died and i skinned it.......dang?!
  • ive had random horses that ive never seen before show up... after i would complete a quest on a horse i would get off it to go to a store or whatever then when it was a gone i would whistle and a horse ive never seen before in my life will show up... what gives?
  • can you complete the game, buy a horse and restart 20 story missions and get the achievements??
  • worst achievement ive ever seen on any game. Ive completed the game at 100% but missed this achievement so going to have to start the game again and play through 1/3 of the game just for a lousy 10g ........ STUPID, ANNOYING & BORING !!! @ hod doffen, no you can't do it that way, must be 20 consecutive, continous missions i'm afraid.
  • I didn't get this achievement till I crosses over to Mexico so mission 25 and that was with the white stallion you get of Bonnie
  • I posted a while back about trying to get this with the War Horse. I wanted to update my post and say that it finally unlocked for me in my game. I stuck with it, almost giving up and restarted my entire game, and it finally unlocked after doing my first mission in Mexico. It looks like it took me more than 20 missions to get it, but using the War Horse doesn't prevent you from getting the achievement. It is a huge pain trying to get this last single player achievement though.
  • Can this be done after you complete the game by replaying missions?
  • You have to play through the story missions to get this my suggestion is starting a new game and to play from there. The first Horse you get when riding to Fort Mercer doesn't count but when you do the mission new Friends old Problems you recieve your first Horse but when you get a new one in wild Horses tamed Passions you will still recive the Achievement as long as your Horse isn't killed or you hitch a new one you will still get the Achievement. I got mine on A sport of Kings and Liars hope it works out.
  • Right i missed this achievement the first time i play red dead, so i'm having another crack at it. Im on my 10th misson so i'm half way there but i just want to know for sure what to do. I've still got the same horse that you get at the start (the brown one) and if i change my horse when Bonnie gives me another one (the pale one) will i still get the achievement if i change to that one, and hitch it? Or shall i just stick with the brown one. Cheers
  • Does replaying missions work ???
  • I didn't even realize this was an achievement. I was riding mine off cliffs the whole game just to get places faster/have fun. I killed 7 or 8 that way.
  • Now, what I'm reading is that Bonnie's horse doesn't void the achievement. What I want to know is if you save that horse at a hitching post, will that void the achievement?
  • i dont no how i got this but i did!
  • does replaying missions work? will someone bloody answer
  • Replaying missions does not work, and the horse you get as a reward for doing Bonnie's horse-taming mission does not count as a horse change. As noted by others, I too received the achievement as soon as I completed Irish's first mission. As I was only doing story missions, and nothing else (no side missions, no challanges, no strangers) it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would. My advise: sleep after every mission (whether at the ranch or at your campsite) so if something goes wrong--such as horse falling off cliff, attacked by cougar, or whatever--you can just reload the mission save and try again. Also, whenever completing a carriage ride, I'd immediately whistle my horse to confirm it was the right one--if not, reload.
  • There is something NOBODY answered here.. that is, after Bonnie gives me the horse i dont want, and that i desperately want to shed to get my original horse back, HOW DO I DO THIS?
  • Great, fucking thanks for nothing, SCUMBAGS.. no fucking advice and my horse has been "overwritten" with the Bonnie one.. why is it so hard for one of u pieces of garbage to explain how to maintain the original horse? Instead i hear garbage about horses dying and horses being shot, ie idiotic failures.. fuckbots..
  • how do u know ur horse dies even after u get off of it?
  • I started a new game and used the War Horse until Bonnie gave me a horse. Took 22 missions and about 3 hours to unlock.
  • Iggsy81: Why do you want your original horse back? Do you have an emotional attachment to that horse for some reason? An intimate relationship? In the eight minutes between you posting a silly question and then cursing people for not answering you, you could have easily read the responses here and realized that there is no need to keep the original horse. You can ride any horse you want and get this achievement. Just hitch the first one and never hitch another horse for the rest of the game. It's not THAT hard.
  • this cheevo is a pain in the arse...
  • ... but finally got it!
  • Accidentally shot mine... twice... On two different occasions. And accidentally drowned it. And accidentally fell off a ciff with it... twice.
  • does the war horse count?
  • The War Horse doesn't count, because i guess they consider it a "cheat"
  • for those yet to play it: you cannot do this on Undead Nightmare. there is simply not enough missions!
  • @14 - horses dont die of old age, but they do die when your stamina meter goes right down to nothing. @iggsy81 - The horse that Bonnie gives you is the one of the 3 fastest horses in the game... Why wouldn't you want it...?
  • @45 'iggsy81' U Mad? I was getting annoyed at the amount of people here who clearly aren't reading earlier posts and asking the same question over and over and then I read your post and burst out laughing. Look at you throwing your toys out of the pram like a little baby because you had to change your horse when if you'd read the earlier posts you'd know that that is ok at that point. What a fool.
  • Anyone know if the mission for Seth, where you have to distract the sheriffs by stealing one of the horses, counts against it?
  • @SDHoneymonster As long as you don't hitch any horse after the first horse you hitch, there should not be any problems. That is how I interpret it anyway.
  • i guess im gonna have to go back and do 20 missions with the same horse
  • At around the mission "You Shall Not Give False Testimony, Except For Profit" I realized that I had to open my Satchel to unlock my War Horse. After that, I just stuck with it. A cougar killed it once, but I just reloaded the last save to keep it alive. After I completed the mission "The Demon Drink," the 20th mission with the War Horse, it unlocked immediately. This Achievement can most definitely be unlocked sooner that that, but that was my method. Also, I NEVER tied my War Horse to a Hitching Post and always whistled for it just to always be sure I was riding it.
  • Pretty easy. Can be a pain in the ass if you mess up I guess. Just keep the same horse until it pops up. Avoid cliffs and don't shoot the thing. I didn't even hitch my horse just in case. I just saved and transported with my campsite. It unlocked the irish mission where the machine gun isn't in the cabin. The first time my horse died so I reloaded a game from a mission or two before. Rode the horse up to them to make sure it couldn't do anything stupid. After I completed it, I whistled for it and it must have run into the water then or something and died, but that mission was enough for the achivement. As many have said the horse you get from bonnie is part of the story line and doesn't count as a new horse. Don't worry about it, It's better than your old one anyway Iggsy81 -
  • The achievement just popped for me on the Mission where you help Bonnie rescue her horses from the burning barn. I used the War Horse the whole time since the beginning of the game and never hitched it. I did however ride a lot of horses in the game in, including the one Seth tells you to steal from the Sheriff so he can get Moses out. I also caught a couple random horses in the wilderness and broke them in and that didn't void the achievement. Seems like as long as you don't hitch another horse your fine, even if you ride other horses.
  • Got this after mission #21. Save frequently, reload if horse dies, always whistle for horse...that's it.
  • Will this count if I start over?
  • I got this and didn't even know it was an achievement. It popped for me after the mission where Irish ferries you across the river.
  • During the Race mission for Bonnie, my horse had a massive brain aneurysm or something, and wouldn't cross the second bridge. Instead he would just lurch to the left or right, and shoot off the cliff.. I didn't reload, just pushed 'Retry' and started with the same horse. I just want to make sure that I didn't screw anything up. Any help would be appreciated.
  • @ #66: Mine did the same thing. Horse died, hit retry. I did eventually get the achievement on that playthrough, so it doesn't count as a horse death. Just wanted to say thanks to the posters above me for offering useful advice. My experience: Started out a new game after beating it 100%. The war horse was hitched at MacFarlane's Ranch to start. I used the war horse until the Bonnie mission where you break the Saddler, then that became my default horse (when I whistled, it came) I used the saddler from then on. I completed the missions for Bonnie, Nigel, and Seth. After completing the first mission for Irish, the achievement popped. Didn't ever manually hitch (press X) any horse except for the first few missions where it forces you to hitch. On the mission where you ste
  • what I don't understand about this game is why are some of these hidden achivements secret. I mean I would have never guessed how to do this, cause I would never have known about this. Comeon R*.
  • I have the GOTY edition. Just got it after my 22nd mission (which ironically was racing my horse for Nigel Dickens). War Horse most definitely counts. Was given the War Horse at the beginning. Have used it ever since. Periodically the stupid horse would stand on a track while I was on a mission and get hit by a train. Twice it fell off a cliff when I called for it. Each time it died I went to the dashboard, started again at previous save. NOT Auto-save, but a previous file save. Once on my 18th mission, the horse died. Last save was after my 11th mission. Had to work my way back up repeating the same missions again. Just confirms that if it dies, reloading previous save file when it was alive still counts. So save after EVERY mission. Never hitch it. I always just jumped off and started a
  • mission, then called for it when I was done. Don't get frustrated if it doesn't unlock right away after the 21st mission. Again, it unlocked right after I completed my 22nd mission. It seems random but I may or may not have rehitched it after I first completed a mission for Bonnie in the very beginning since I wasn't aware of this achievement until around my 9th or 10th mission. Glad I kept the horse until then. Also, failing a mission and replaying it doesn't affect the achievement. I failed loads of times. Hope this helps.
  • This Cheevo is finicky as all get out.. I am on my 24th mission now with no 'pop', I did everything to spec, but on my 21st mission I coincidentally clicked my War horse deed.. it auto-saved automatically and said "I own a new horse," this pretty much screwed me... fml.
  • I'm willing to help anybody with any achievement/challenges for the price of 20 headshots per achievement/5 per challenge. My gt: IKV91.
  • I took comment #3 advice, and unlocked the achievement on "The Assault on Fort Mercer" mission.
  • I know this is a while after the last post but had real trouble, never switched horses at all, apart from when Bonnie gives you the Kentucky saddler, played exclusively story missions, never deviated, saved after every mission, loaded only once. Never hitched it to a post apart from when I saved it was hitched but I whistled it instead of just jumping on, used other horses in missions when necessary and finally unlocked it 29 missions in while playing poker with LR in Mexico. Stupid achievement!
  • I found it fairly easy
  • i fucked up so badly i did about 12 missions with the same horse then i started to rush and i selected war horse by mistake :/
  • nah fuck this achievement i started the whole game again and when i did the 2nd mission in mexico i swapped my horse
  • I read this achievement before playing, ha.
  • I started this after getting the stallion you break in for the bonnie mission. At a guess that was 5-10 missions in for me. My game stats count says i've now completed 38 missions. Yet still no achievement and i 100% have the same horse. I died once (rode into a lake). Another time, even though i dismounted a fair distance away, the stupid horse followed me into a gun fight (story mission) and got shot. Both times i reloaded my last manual save (not auto), but it makes me wonder if the counter still got reset? Guess, i'll try and keep it until the end and just hope it pops.
