Kill the last buffalo in the Great Plains in Single Player.

This can only be completed in the Great Plains. You will first need to finish Act 2 to gain access to this area. Make your way to the Great Plains and ride around until you find the Buffalo. They are normally roaming around in the open. To unlock the achievement you need to kill all 20 of the herd. Make sure that you pick off the buffalo from a distance, if they run off don't chase them. Save often and come back to this area every once in a while to kill the odd buffalo you see. Once you kill the last buffalo the achievement will unlock.

Attempting this early on with a less powerful gun can take a while. If you have a sniper rifle use that instead it's a one shot kill on any buffalo.

Note: If the buffalo run into the river and kill themselves they sometimes don't re-spawn. If this happens there is no way for you to earn the achievement. Make sure you don't chase them.

You do not have to kill them all on one run, you can come back and finish the rest of later (very usefull information, seeing as skinning a buffalo can net you around $90 and if you kill them all at once, the corpses will disappear before you're done).

NOTE: I recommend saving before attempting to kill them, as some people have been experiencing glitches where they did not get the achievement because of one or more buffalos commiting suicide (by running down a cliff or into the water).

If you use a sniper rifle from a distance, your able to pick them all off in one go, they didn't run when i did it.

Another interesting thing me and my friend noticed was that he was able to get this achievement from killing my buffalo mount in multiplayer 20 times. So for all of you who had it bug or fail in some way on single player, try finding someone with the mount in multiplayer or wait until you get it yourself and kill that one 20 times.

Make sure it's okey for the person with the mount that you kill it, or he might get angry and leave/kill you.

A quick word of caution. It seems that where ever there are buffalo in this
game, at least one cougar is nearby.

Another easy way to take them out is using the Evans Repeater, since it has 22 ammo. Just have to be quick about it.

if you kill so many and cant find any more you can replay the missions "at home with dutch"

while making your way into great plains you should see 3/4 people on horses trying to shoot them, there was at least another 20 buffalo

So I got this achievemnt while I was offline and then turned off my xbox. I recently bought a new xbox and fired it up and recovered my gamertag. Unfortunately the achievement points didn't transfer. The problem though is that the save already has me killing off all the buffalo. So now there is no way to get the achievement again? Unless I start all over? Does anyone else have an idea of how to get it?

@13 Yeah, I agree that this achievement is in pretty bad taste. They should have done something unique with it, such as "Kill the lone white buffalo" or something, instead of slaughtering the only herd in the game.

this is easily done, done this without help
if you do the home with dutch mission, there should be loadsa buffalos running from hunters at the beginning
i just shot this as many as i can
i went back to the spot while in SP free roam, and the are there and i havent got mater hunter level 10

For those of you who are stuck, here are a few things to help you.

1) Save your game at Blackwater. That way, you won't have to travel far to get to them.

2) Use Dead Eye. Using Dead Eye is very useful, as you have more time to shoot more of them.

3) Use a sniper rifle. Shooting them from a distance is essential. If they start to run away from you, don't chase them. If you do chase them, they will spread out , at which point they will run away to a distance where they will disappear all together, and you can't get them. So use a sniper rifle (I used the Carcano Rifle) and combine this with the Dead Eye, as you will have more time to shoot them.

Also, when you need to reload, come out of Dead Eye and allow yourself to reload. If you reload while in Dead Eye, you will waste all y

*Your Dead Eye, and this will make it more difficult to shoot them. So therefore, take plenty of moonshine. This will refill your Dead Eye whenever you run out.

Plus, keep the camera on them at all times. You can't afford to lose them.

Hope this helps!

Just got this achievement--I saved at Jack's family ranch, then started out down the road & they happened to be in the grassy field. Used the Bolt Action Rifle, with nothing special--just aimed & shot. Took a couple to get them each down, but it wasn't hard! If you're having trouble finding them, look by the ranch! This is after the storyline's over, though. Also, there will be a cougar. D:

"At Home With Dutch" mission does not work. I'm at 19 Buffalo and I've replayed this mission all the way through 3 times making damn sure to kill at least 5 Buffalo each time. You can't access Stats during the mission and when I finish the mission, my Stats still say only 19.

just so you know.buffalo are real.they also called american bison.great plains are real.in fact the last buffaloes survived on the great plains.the cowboys nearly killed them all off.i have seen a picture of millions of buffalo bones on a train.its sad.not just that but native americans put there heads on the ground to hear them.when the buffaloes died the native americans were out of food.i never got this achievement.because in my heart.i am not bad.it not just a game.only if you were all animal experts:(

Unfortunately they won't spawn again when you've got the achievement..so if you want to keep your possible "main source of income", save before attempting this.

this is a poorly designed obstacle. the fact that they are always on the side of that cliff or split into two full packs is annoying. ive reloaded this multiple times and its 70% chance of rain.

Wait, so kill the LAST one or all of them? Does it matter if the 10th or 11th commits suicide as long as you personally kill the last surviving buffalo?

this is how i got it. i had 4 left but could not find ANY in the great plains. go this from red dead redemption wiki:

Also, placing a bait at the end (as seen on the world map) of the road leading to Cochinay fort (outside of the fort not too far from the gates) will often spawn small herd of buffalo.
