Axe Master Achievement in Red Dead Redemption

  • Axe Master

    10

Complete all Tomahawk challenges in Single Player.

  • How to unlock Axe Master

Before you can start these challenges you need to head to the Manzanita Post, you can buy the 20 Tomahawks for $10 each. Once you have the Tomahawk you can proceed to complete the following challenges:

    Tomahawk Mastery Rank 2
Kill one enemy with the tomahawk used as a throwing weapon, one as a melee weapon, and one from horseback.

You can do these three just about anywhere that you encounter enemies. Animal enemies do not count towards the criteria, but you can head to any hideout and complete these in a matter of minutes.

The melee attack doesn't haven't to be done on an enemy, it seems to count if you equip a bandana and kill any of the none hostile characters around town. Head to Thieves' Landing and take out any of people walking around. Just walk up to the person you want to kill, stand close and use the tomahawk as if you were to throw it, instead you will kill the person you're facing by hitting them with the Tomahawk instead.

With the next two, which involve throwing the tomahawk, head to Pike's Basin, use dead eye and carefully pick off one of the guys hiding behind the rocks at the start. Once you complete that part of the challenge, jump on your horse and do the same.

Just remember, using deadeye may help you aim, but once you throw the enemy may duck down or move. So aim carefully.

    Tomahawk Mastery Rank 3
Kill a flying bird with a tomahawk without using deadeye.

This sounds fairly difficult, but it is fairly simple and easy to do. Head to any of the hideouts, I decided to stick with Twin Rocks as it's small and quick. Kill everyone and complete the hideout, once you complete the hideout get onto the roof of the house. You will now have several vultures flying above you, these are one of the larger birds in the game so they are easy to hit without a struggle. Load up on tomahawks and just carefully aim and throw.

    Tomahawk Mastery Rank 4
Kill 5 enemies in a row without missing with the tomahawk.

This is another challenge, which can easily be completed at Twin Rocks. Take out the first two guys high up on the rocks with a rifle, they are easy to miss so there is no reason to waste tomahawks on them.

You will have four guys left in front of you, then another three will exit the house once they are killed. Carefully work your way around the cover and use your deadeye and melee enemies with the tomahawk as much as possible. Doing this will allow you to score the kills without missing. You will also perform an instant kill rather than having to aim carefully with your throws.

    Tomahawk Mastery Rank 5
Complete a hideout using only tomahawks.

This final challenge can also be completed at Twin Rocks. You can repeat the same as Rank 4, but make sure you aim carefully for the guys up high on the rocks. Try to get as close as you can and use deadeye as much as possible.

Just take your time and use the tomahawk's melee attack often so you don't waste how many you have.

    Alternative Method:
It seems that once you earn Rank 4 it resets the counter for the hideouts. If you complete Master Rank 4 then continue inside the house and kill the last enemy, it seems to count for the last challenge. If this doesn't work for you, it might have just been a freak glitch, but it's worth a try as you won't lose out on anything.

  • There are 5 challenges the last one being to beat a hideout with only the tomahawk. Twin Rocks is the easiest.Th only tricky part is the people on the cliffs.
  • how do you use a tomahawk as a melee weapon
  • I can confirm the glitch the guide states for the final challenge. I got the mastery #4 challenge completed just outside the house at twin rocks. Then killed the last guy with a tomahawk for kicks and ended up completing th3 5th challenge. A bit baffled. But who cares! :) To use the tomahawk as a melee just don't AIM it. Walk up to a guy and just press right trigger and you'll ram the tomahawk into the guys neck. sweet.
  • if you buy the game disc you can only use the tomahawk in the zombie campaign to kill a random flying bat with it cuz i have no idea how to get to a place so i can actually sumwhat aim and hit one - so how the hell do u do it
  • I found I could use the sniper riffle on the guys on the rocks, then complete the rest of the hideout with tomahawks and I still got the achievement and Level 5.
  • I've read elsewhere that you can use undead bait to attract the bats in the Undead S.Player challenge, if it works it'll save me a ton of tomahawks + rescues of Manzanita Post
  • UPDATE: doesn't work using bait on bats, so God knows how I'll fluke that challenge
  • am i totally missing something or do i have to restart a game to get the hideouts back?
  • killing a bird is made easy in the great plains, just walk around and scare the ones that are on the ground. already aiming when you get up close and just start throwing lol. i got it in 4 or 5 birds
  • can get this wit hthe undead nightmare disc
  • the alternate method worked for me
  • I found nearly impossible to hit the undead bat with the tomahawk. I was simply killing the undead and a bat just intersect the path of the tomahawk the to get the challenge completed. Finally got the achievement.
  • @Comment #2, you have to be right up in someone's face in press RT. Anyway, I did Rank 4 and 5 of Tomahawk Master in one hideout: Fort Mercer. Killed the first five people with flying Tomahawks to get Rank 4, then either used the tomahawk is a melee weapon or threw more as needed. Once I completed the hideout, I got the achievement about 30 seconds later as all my rewards were popping up on screen.
  • for rank 3 on Undead Nightmare disc you CAN use dead-eye. the way to do it is to wander off trail somewhere quiet and fire off a random shot with the repeater. if you're in the right place you'll disturb some bats from the ground around you. as they fly up quickly switch to tomahawk, aim, dead-eye, tag, fire, et voila! i happened to luck it like this north of Diez Coronas right after i broke the unicorn, but i think it's a good method.
  • To complete this in undead nightmare use Death to kill all of the zombies until the meter goes away. Then simple hop off and either use dead eye or melee the rest
  • ^ I did the exact same thing. Haha I rode into the town under attack, destroyed all zombies with Death but a couple and killed them with tomahawks.
  • never gonna get :'( its basically imposible to tomohawk a bat
  • Is this for undead nightmare or multiplayer?
  • I'm willing to help anybody with any achievement/challenges for the price of 20 headshots per achievement/5 per challenge. My gt: IKV91.
  • anyone else having problems finishing rank 2? I start twin rocks, kill the 2 guys on the rocks with my sniper rifle and after that i killed at least 2 guys on a horseback, 2 with melee and the rest with thrown tomahawks. My progress always stays at 2/3 on rank 2, can anyone help? :(
  • You can pick up your tomahawk from looting a body that you just killed with one (tomahawk). Good tip when dealing with the final challenge *Complete a Gang Hideout w/ just Tomahawks*
  • @#22 This is true. I got Rank 5 at Tesoro Azul with only four Tomahawks on me. I'd sneak up and use them as melee weapons and when I did throw them I'd loot the body to get it back. I got Rank 4 AND Rank 5 at the same time actually. I went to Tesoro Azul because after you kill the first guy at the gate, two more guys come running out so you can hide and ambush them easily with Tomahawks for three easy hits/no misses. Then go inside and find two more guys to kill. I preferred to find guys who weren't ducked down or taking cover as they're one dodge away from ruining the streak. After I got Tomahawk Mastery Rank 4, I continued using only tomahawks (at this point I only had four left as I mentioned before) and finished the rest of the hideout. Thus, I can confirm that if you start a hid
  • I completed Twin Rocks by sniping the two enemies on the rocks and the one on the roof. I used the tomahawks on all the other enemies to get through Rank 4. It gave me Rank 5 as well and the achievement. I guess it didn't actually start the hideout until I was in range, so sniping the guys up top didn't count. Good deal!
  • Just did rank 5 on Gaptoothbreach
