Introduction:
Rise of Nightmares by Sega is a first-person survival horror game for Kinect. This is no rail-shooter; you can move anywhere in the game world, and interact with objects by using realistic gestures. While the controls may take some getting used to, once you have them down the game is tons of fun. The thrill of hacking and slashing creatures to pieces with your hands never gets tired, though your arm will.

Step 1: Humane Playthrough
The three achievements for playing through on each difficulty do not stack, so you might as well start on the easiest setting. This will also allow you to get familiar with the game and its controls.

In this playthrough, make it a point to kill every creature you see, pick up every weapon, tarot card and detective’s tape, and view all secret events. This will net you Creature Hunter, Tarot Master, Master Sleuth, and Sharp-Eyed Traveler. You will also earn progress towards, and likely earn many of the weapon-specific kill achievements. Your kill counts carry over to each playthrough, so there’s no need to try and get all the kill-based achievements in one go.

Beating the game on this difficulty will get you Nightmare Escapee, and unlock the Torture difficulty and Endless Nightmare mode.

Step 2: No Mercy Playthrough
Now play again on the normal difficulty, No Mercy. Finish up any weapon-based kill achievements you can. Completing the game this time will earn you Nightmare Defeater.

Step 3: Torture Playthrough without Dying
Now that you’ve beaten the game twice, you should know what you’re doing. This playthrough can be tough, as you can die in one or two hits. If you do die, shut the Xbox off before the Game Over screen appears to make sure your death doesn’t count. If successful, you will earn both Nightmare Vanquisher and Master of the Nightmare.

Step 4: Endless Nightmare
Now comes the difficult part, Act 10, which is on Torture difficulty. You need to complete each of the three scenes within the time allotted to get an A rank. Doing so will get you Escape From the Grasp of Evil, Live to Tell the Tale, Fight or Flight, and Endless Nightmare.

While playing, make sure to pick up the few weapons in this act that are needed for Weapon Master.

Conclusion:
At this point you will likely have all the achievements. If you are missing any, such as a weapon kill achievement, load up an appropriate scene and get it done. Celebrate your 1000 in Rise of Nightmares!
[x360a would like to thank HamKet for this road map]

Destiny's Path5
Cards of Insight. (4)

This can first be unlocked in Act 1. Tarot Card 0 (The Fool) can be found in the dining car. Once you side-step the guy on the phone, turn around, and you will see the card to the right of the door from which you entered. A complete list of Tarot Cards can be found here.

Fading Footprints5
Forgotten Records. (5)

This can first be unlocked in Act 1. Detective's Tape 01 (In Eastern Europe) can be found at the end of the dining car. When facing the dining car exit, turn around and you will see another door. Open this to enter a small kitchen, where you will find the tape on a counter. A complete list of Detective's Tapes can be found here.

Creature Executioner15
Attacks from below are effective against creatures too. (6)

A spear trap is a section of floor that has spears which pop out at regular intervals. You need to get 20 creatures to die on these spears, either by knocking or leading them onto the spears.

A good place to get this is in Act 3. After the TV room, there will be a long passage with spear traps and several enemies. Kick or lead them onto the spears to kill them, and then kill yourself. Repeat until you unlock the achievement.

In Act 10-2 there are spear traps that materialize from purple vortices. These also count for this achievement, but there are very few enemies in the area.

Iron Fist10
Keep punching. Don't stop. (4)

Kill 50 enemies with weapons worn over both fists. These include:

  • Brass Knuckles
  • Creature Gloves
  • Golden Knuckles
  • Katara
  • Shock Knuckles

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Knife User10
Keep swinging that knife. (2)

Kill 50 enemies with knives. These include:

  • Survival Knife
  • Yuli's Blade

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Creature Fighter20
You cannot always run from danger. (2)

Kill 100 creatures by any means. This will likely unlock sometime in Act 3.

Creature Slayer50
Leave nothing moving in your wake. (4)

Kill 500 creatures by any means. This will likely unlock sometime in Act 7 or the beginning of your second playthrough, depending on how vigilant you are at killing things.

Creature Slicer15
You need to lure them into their doom. (4)

The slicer is a large spinning blade that slices across a room, either from the wall or floor. You need to get 20 creatures to die on these blades, either by knocking or leading them onto the blades.

While there are many locations with slicers, the best place to work on the achievement is in Act 3. You'll come to a point where there is a locked door at the end of a large room, and you need to pull a lever to open the door. Pulling this lever also activates a pair of large slicers, and lets lots of creatures into the room. Simply bait the creatures into walking into the blades, and they will die. Once the room is clear, kill yourself on the blades, and repeat until the achievement unlocks.

Invitation to a Nightmare5
This is where it all begins. (2)

This achievement is earned for starting a new game for the first time. It will unlock after you choose your difficulty setting, while the game loads.

Nice Gesture!5
Try touching things. (6)

This game relies on your intuition and common sense to perform the majority of in-game actions, such as opening a door, climbing a ladder, or pulling a lever. You will get this achievement in Act 0 when you open a door for the first time.

The First Kill5
Subdue your fear and confront the horrific. (1)

In Act 0, once you make it out of your prison cell, kill any of the enemies you encounter in the circular passage outside. The kill can be done with or without a weapon. Once the first one is dead, the achievement will unlock.

Brawl King15
Don't pick things up. (5)

Kill 50 enemies by punching or kicking. You can punch with your left hand at any time, and with your right when you are not carrying a weapon, but can kick any time.

These are the weakest attacks, so either work on this when your current weapon breaks and before you pick up another, or try and get it done in the early stages that have weaker enemies. You can also whittle an enemy's health down with a weapon, and finish it with a kick.

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use unarmed attacks when possible.

Creature Hunter30
Defeat as many kinds of creatures as you can.

This is achievement is earned by killing one of every type of creature in the game, not counting bosses. If you make sure to kill everything you encounter, you'll unlock this in Act 7.

Weapon Master30
Pick up every weapon you see. (5)

Pick up one of every weapon in the game. You do not need to get a kill with every weapon. You will know when you have picked up a new weapon as a text description will appear in the top-left of the screen.

There are 39 weapons in the game. For their locations, go here.

Creature Crusher15
Kick'em to their doom! (4)

A spiked wall is a section of wall that has spikes protruding from it. You need to get 20 creatures to die on these spikes, by kicking or punching them into the spikes.

In Act 3, after the passing through the passageway that has lots of puddles, you will turn the power on which causes the puddles to become electrified. At this point you need to go down a ladder to proceed. In this underground passage, there are spiked walls and a handful of enemies. Kick or punch them into the spikes to kill them, and then kill yourself. Repeat until you unlock the achievement.

Creature Bomber15
Burn baby, burn! (8)

This achievement is earned by killing 30 enemies with explosive crates. Kills made with Volatile Test Tubes do not count towards this.

There are numerous parts of the game with explosive crates. A good place to work on this is in Act 3. Just after you pull the lever to open the door and activate the slicers, you enter a room with several red crates, a stairway, and three enemies in the room. You can try getting enemies from the previous room to follow you. Lure the enemies near the crates, then attack the crates, causing them to explode, killing the enemies nearby and very likely you. Repeat until you unlock the achievement.

Craftsman10
Dismember a single creature while leaving it alive. (6)

This is earned by cutting off a creature's head and two arms. This can be pretty tricky, as you'll often kill them before you can remove the third part.

Grab a sharp weapon, like a Knife, Machete or Hatchet. Try to remove each arm first, by swinging directly at each arm. Once both arms are gone, remove the head by swinging down or stabbing at it. If successful, the head will explode, and the body will stumble around for a moment before finally dying.

Refrain from swinging wildly at it, as that will just cause more damage and kill it before you want to. Do not attack the creature after removing it's parts; allow it to die on its own.

Watcher5
The actions of others are fascinating. (2)

This can first be unlocked in Act 1, The Train. After reading the note from Kate, proceed along the train car until you see an open compartment on the left. Inside, there is a female student looking out the window. Select the "Look" command on-screen to get the achievement.

A complete list of secret events can be found here.

Mad Bomber10
Keep tossing those tubes. (1)

Kill 50 creatures with exploding test tubes. These include:

  • Golden Test Tube
  • Volatile Test Tube

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Dismantler10
It's easy to cut things down to size. (1)

Kill 100 creatures with a powered weapon. Powered weapons to not auto-aim. These include, but may not be limited to:

  • Bloody Chainsaw
  • Chainsaw
  • Drill
  • Meat Mincer

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Sage10
Let loose with loads of energy. (2)

Kill 100 creatures with the glove of Azoth. You will obtain this weapon in Act 4, just after you climb the tower and fight the transformed puppet survivors.

Use the glove by pointing your left arm up, and touching your right hand to your left elbow. You can charge up the weapon by holding this pose for a few seconds. Fire by thrusting your left palm outward. Charged shots can take out small groups of enemies.

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this weapon to make kills.

Pipe-Layer10
You can use tools too. (3)

Kill 50 creatures with exploding pipe-like weapons. These include, but may not be limited to:

  • Bloody Metal Bat
  • Bone Crusher
  • Iron Pipe

Kill 50 creatures with chopping weapons. These include, but may not be limited to:

  • Golden Hatchet
  • Hatchet
  • Machete

Take weapons from creatures. (3)

Kill 50 creatures with weapons dropped by enemies. These include:

  • Creature Claw
  • Knife Arm
  • Power Saw Arm

Headhunter20
They're creatures. It's okay. (1)

When fighting enemies, preferably with a sharp weapon, aim for the head. You will often remove the head while doing this. Kill 50 creatures in this manner.

Multi-Hitter10
Knock out more than one at a time. (5)

Killing three enemies or more with one attack is tricky do with regular melee weapons, as it is hard to hit every enemy in a group at the same time. Rather, get a Golden Test Tube and toss it at a group of three enemies. If they all die, the achievement will unlock.

Lightning Reflexes20
Demonstrate outstanding response time. (2)

When fighting bosses, you may be prompted to perform a gesture in order to dodge an attack. Perform 50 of these successfully to unlock this achievement. All bosses have attacks that must be dodged with a gesture, so this should unlock by the end of your first playthrough.

Limb Lopper10
Plants aren't the only things you can prune and trim. (1)

Kill 100 creatures with scissor-like weapons (weapons that have a hinge). These include:

  • Bone Shears
  • Giant Tongs
  • Hedge Shears

Your kill counts carry over from each playthrough, so this will eventually unlock this as long as you use this type of weapon when available.

Ernst10
Such fierce strength. (3)

In Act 6, you play as Ernst, the large monster that launches chains from his hands. Kill 100 enemies with these chains to unlock the achievement. You can replay Act 6 to get the required kills if desired.

in Act 10-1 and 10-3, you can find the weapon, Ernst's Chain, which also counts towards this achievement.

Brute5

Escape From the Grasp of Evil30
Obtained an A-Rank in Act 10, Scene 1. (1)

To get an A rank, you must complete the scene quickly, and with a decent, but not necessarily high kill count. Move from area to area swiftly, stopping only to kill those enemies directly in your way. Keep your arms down unless you need to block or attack; the auto-aim will become frustrating quickly, as it will spin you around in directions you may not want to go.

Scene 1 takes place in the catacombs and graveyard from Act 2. An A rank can be achieved with at least 42,830 points, but lower might be possible.

Here's a video walkthrough:

Live to Tell the Tale30
Obtained an A-Rank in Act 10, Scene 2. (3)

Scene 2 begins in the TV room from Act 3, and takes you through the bedrooms, ending in the booby-trapped underground passage. There are very few enemies in this scene; your main task will be avoiding one-hit kill traps. An A rank can be achieved with at least 38,820 points, but lower might be possible.

Here's a video walkthrough:

Fight or Flight30
Obtained an A-Rank in Act 10, Scene 3. (3)

Scene 3 takes place in the forest from Act 5. It can be tricky to navigate your first time through, as there are multiple portals you can take, levers to pull, and an item to find. There are tons of enemies here, and it is best to avoid combat when possible, especially in the area with the hordes of chef creatures. Keep your arms down and kick enemies away, killing only those necessary to clear a path. An A rank can be achieved with at least 52,360 points, but lower might be possible.

Here's a video walkthrough:

Sharp-Eyed Traveler20
Discovered all "Secret Events." (1)

There are 12 Secret Events throughout Acts 1 through 8. Find them all to earn this achievement. Your discovered events carry over from each playthrough, so if you miss any, you can replay Acts from the Scene Select menu, or find them up on another playthrough.

A complete list of secret events can be found here.

Endless Nightmare60
Survived the Endless Nightmare.

The Endless Nightmare is Act 10, and must be unlocked by first completing the game on any difficulty. The difficulty setting for Act 10 is "Torture" and cannot be changed. The goal is to complete each stage in the time allotted, without dying. You only get one life to complete each scene, so if you die, you must start over again.

To get this achievement, you must complete all three scenes in Act 10, which are selectable from the Scene Select menu. See the three achievements for obtaining an A rank on each scene for more.

Master of the Nightmare60
Cleared the "TORTURE" difficulty without dying. (18)

"Torture" is the hardest difficulty, and must be unlocked by first completing the game on either "Humane" or "No Mercy." To select this setting, choose New Game at the Main Menu.

You can die in one or two hits on this setting. The key to surviving is to avoid fights whenever possible, and not to get overwhelmed by groups of enemies. If you are injured, back away if you have room, or block by keeping your arms up. You can still die while blocking if you are already near death.

If you do die, either shut-off your Xbox or quit to the dashboard before YOU ARE DEAD appears on screen. You will have to continue from your last checkpoint, but your death will not count.

Complete all acts on this difficulty without dying to earn this achievement. It will unlock after the cut-scene that is Act 9, which takes place after the credits, so do not turn off the game until you watch it.

To minimize your playthroughs, it is recommended that you go for this achievement at the same time as Nightmare Vanquisher - which is obtained by clearing the game on "Torture" difficulty.
