Introduction:
Welcome to Sega’s Shinobi. This original classic title debuted back in 1987 and several sequels were released in the years after that. It’s a pretty easy platform game and should be no challenge to complete. It has a nice “save game” feature that will come in handy and help you finish the story without too many frustrations. When I finished the game, the in-game clock ended somewhere between 30 and 40 minutes, but because of the number of saves and reloads, the actual time that it took me to complete the game was a few hours. There are five missions and each mission has three to four short stages. Some areas can be difficult, but saving and reloading very often will help you get through the game easily. Remember this game is from a while back and the AI wasn’t as developed as it is nowadays. Therefor, the enemies spawn at the same locations and have the same move and attack patterns. In order to achieve a 100% completion, it is important you play on the hardest difficulty. This road map in combination with the achievement guide will help you get the full 200 .

Step #1: Playthrough on Hardest Difficulty
From the main menu, start a Single Player game. Customize the game’s setting by setting difficulty to Hardest and Lives and Continues to five. You might also want to use the video walkthrough that you can find here to help when you get stuck on a particular level or boss.

Mission 1:
As soon as the game starts, press to save your game. Now, let yourself get killed using all your lives and continues until “Game Over” appears on the screen. This should unlock the Often Say Die achievement. If not, restart a new single player game with the same settings except set the Continues to 4 instead of 5. Repeat and you will get the achievement.

Now reload your saved game. On the first enemy you encounter, you can unlock the Kick It achievement. Now go on with the playthrough. Be sure to “rescue” the girls along the way. It is important to reload a saved game whenever you get killed as you need to finish the first mission without dying in order to unlock the What’s A Ninja achievement. On Mission 1.2 you can unlock the Killer Winds achievement. Assuming you did the save-reload trick and didn’t die once, you will unlock the What’s A Ninja achievement after defeating the boss on Mission 1.3.

Before Mission 2 starts, you’ll get a challenge level. Save at the beginning of this challenge level, as you’ll want to unlock the Perfect Challenge level here. The challenge levels after this one only become tougher, so keep reloading until you’ve unlocked it. It’s really not that difficult. You should also have unlocked the Points I achievement by now.

Mission 2:
On Mission 2.1 you can unlock the It’s Electric achievement. Save often. When you come to the end of Mission 2.1, you’ll see a part of a ship’s bow. Save here (and be sure not to overwrite that save)!! The ship’s bow is the place where we’ll be grinding for the Points II and Points III achievements. Refer to the guide for further information. At the end of Mission 2.4, you’ll get the Chopper Stopper achievement once you’ve destroyed the chopper and moved on to the next mission.

Mission 3:
Very early on Mission 3.1 you’ll unlock the Negotiator achievement, assuming you rescued all the girls before. There are no other achievements to unlock here.

Mission 4:
There are no achievements to unlock here.

Mission 5:
The only achievement left should be the Complete The Game achievement, that will unlock once you’ve defeated the boss on Mission 5.4. Use the video walkthroughs if you’re not sure how to kill the last boss.

Conclusion:
Like I said earlier, and you will probably agree, it’s an easy set of achievements even on the hardest difficulty. The save-reloading may be annoying at times, but a must in order to achieve the 200 unless you’re a god at this game.

There are 12 achievements with a total of 200 points

  • Finish the game.

There are 5 Missions, each with 3 to 4 stages. Once you’ve defeated the boss on Mission 5.4, this achievement will unlock. If you get stuck on a particular boss or level, you can use this video walkthrough here to help you out.

If you unlocked the only 2 achievements related to the ‘Hardest’ difficulty "Often Say Die" and "Chopper Stopper", you can always restart a new game on the easiest difficulty setting. But using the save feature you shouldn’t have any trouble at all on finishing the game.
  • Play through 20 player deaths, with difficulty set to Hardest.

Mission 1.1 or later – Can be glitchy!!

You have to die at least 20 times and the difficulty setting must be set to ‘Hardest’. Simply start a new game, set difficulty to hardest, lives to 5 and continues to 5 as well.

As soon as the game starts, let yourself be killed using all your lives and all the continues until “Game Over” appears on the screen, unlocking the achievement.

Note: In case it didn’t, restart a new game with the same settings but this time choose 4 continues instead of 5.
  • Score 300,000 points.

The easiest place to grind all the points related achievements is at the end of Mission 2.1. Be sure you still have all your lives and all your continues left!! This is important.

When you get to the end of this mission, you’ll see a part of a ship’s bow.
This is a good place to save your game and make sure you don’t overwrite that save. Don’t jump on the platform! Now, at the ship's bow, move right until you cannot move anymore and have to jump. If you got to the chopper, you went too far! Go back or reload a save as you don't want the chopper to leave. Now start spamming the button. There will be an infinite number of enemies spawning. Do this until the timer runs out and you’ll restart at the beginning of the level. Go back to end of this level and keep repeating this strategy so you’ll be netting 10,000-12,000 points over-and-over again.

You’ll unlock all the points related achievements before all the continues are consumed. If you’re not sure about the location to do this strategy, go to the 3 minutes and 37 seconds mark of the first video walkthrough here.
  • Complete a perfect bonus round.

This can be done at the end of every mission and before starting a new one. The end of Mission 1.3 is the prefect location for this, as the challenge levels after that become tougher.

Before the actual challenge level starts, make sure to make a save so you can reload just in case you fail. All you have to do is kill all the ninjas coming from the left and right. The ninjas will start in the back, eventually jumping to the front, and then on you. Start moving the from left to right and back and continuously hitting the button. You should kill most of them this way. If you notice a ninja (or two) jumping to the front, take them down as soon as possible!
  • Defeat the Black Turtle helicopter in Mission 2... with difficulty on Hardest.

All you need to do is destroy the chopper ‘boss’ at the end of Mission 2.4 on the Hardest difficulty. Keep jumping using the button and throwing ninja stars using the . Aim at the nose of the helicopter as you will cause more damage due to the weak spot in this area.

Eventually there will be yellow ninjas jumping down from the helicopter. Take them down as quickly as possible. The ninjas only need two hits to die. As soon as you’ve killed all the yellow ninjas, the helicopter will shoot a low and high rocket at you. You need to dodge them or destroy them with your ninja stars.
  • Score 80,000 points.

    See Points III
  • Complete Mission 1 without losing a life.

You need to do Missions 1.1, 1.2 and kill the boss on Mission 1.3 without losing a single life in order to unlock this achievement. If necessary, save after every enemy you’ve taken down, and reload if you get killed.
Shoot a few ninja stars at the eye of the boss avoiding his double fire balls attack, and keep an eye on the “Boss Pow”. Once the boss is weakened, use you magic attack by pressing to deal a good amount of damage.
  • Rescue 25 hostages.

    Mission 3.1 or later

Throughout the game you’ll have to rescue hostages. There are more than 25 hostages throughout the game, so don’t worry if you’ve missed a few. Assuming you’ve rescued them all from the beginning of the game, the achievement will unlock after rescuing the second or third hostage on Mission 3.1
  • Use Melee.

This can be unlocked at the start of the game or throughout it. Get as close as possible to an enemy and press . If done correctly, you’ll perform a melee attack. You can tell as the enemy will go down without you shooting a ninja star.
