Introduction:
Welcome to the Penguins of Madagascar for Kinect guide. Outside of the unfortunate name, the game is a simple "on-rails" adventure where you take control of the titular heroes as they try to thwart the dolphin's evil scheme. This is probably the easiest Kinect game to date and is perfect for a younger audience due largely to the simplicity of the controls and the games forgiving nature.

Step 1 - Story Mode Playthrough:
When you start the game you are thrown into the story on the easiest setting. Playing through the game only takes about 3 hours so I recommend running through the entire thing and completing as many of the "action" related achievements as you can. You should also try to pick up the lizards while you play. They are the games only form of collectibles and there are only 36 of them. None of them are too terribly difficult to find. If you do need help I have a location guide HERE.

Step 2 - Hard Story Mode Playthrough:
Once you finish the game the first time, return to the title screen and select options to change the difficulty to Hard. Now go to the mission select screen and start with level 1 and run through the game. If you skip the cut-scenes you can speed through the game in about an hour and a half. You can also attempt to complete any actions or pick-up any lizards you may have missed the first time through.

If you want you can combine steps 1 and 2 by changing the difficulty from the beginning. Hard mode is not difficult by any measure but this will make getting some of the other achievements more difficult. I'd get everything out of the way first, but it is up to you.

Step 3 - Mop Up:
At this point all that is left to do is complete any remaining actions, collect any missing lizards and play the two mini-games.

Conclusion:
There is not much bang for your buck for the regular gamer. This game really shines as an accessible entry for novice gamers. Young kids will enjoy it while everyone else should just rent it for the quick gamerscore fix.

Thanks for reading.

There are 44 achievements with a total of 1000 points

  • Find all chameleons in the game.

    (1)

There are 3 stories in the game and each story contains 4 levels. Each individual level contains 3 Chameleons for a total of 12 per story and 36 throughout the course of the game. They show up on-screen while completing the courses and are slightly faded but the majority of them are easily spotted.

If you are having trouble, a guide to all their locations can be found HERE. It is important to note that you have to complete the level to save your progress. Don't just grab an item and quit out or the item you picked up will NOT register.

  • Find all twelve chameleons in the "Dr. Blowhole!?" story.

    See "Chameleon Collector".

  • Earn a Silver Peanut Butter Winkie on every level in the "Dr. Blowhole!?" story.

    See "Treasure Hunter".

  • Earn a Gold Peanut Butter Winkie on every level in the "Dr. Blowhole!?" story.

    See "Treasure Hunter".

  • Complete all levels in The Penguins of Madagascar.

Story related and cannot be missed.

  • Complete all levels in The Penguins of Madagascar on Hard.

You can change the difficulty of the game from the options on the main menu. There is only easy and hard and the only difference I could tell is that your awesomeness meter depletes faster and you don't have as much time to perform the "actions". Other than that it is a breeze to play through.

You can tell which levels you have completed on hard by going into the mission select screen, choosing a story and then selecting a level. If you see a gold star on the top left of the level icon then you completed that level on hard. If you do everything else first, the run through on hard only takes a little under 2 hours if you skip all the scenes.

If you want to knock this out in one playthrough, exit the game on level 1 and change the difficulty right away. This will make getting the action achievements a little harder though, but only marginally. To do this, hold your left arm out at a 45 degree angle and pause the game. Select Exit Level and choose "Yes" to return to the Lair. Go into options and change the difficulty to Hard and return to the menu. Now go into mission select and select the first level and you're good to go.

  • Complete all levels in the "Dr. Blowhole!?" story.

Story related and cannot be missed. This unlocks upon completing levels 9, 10, 11 and 12.

  • Complete all levels in the "Crystal Staff of the Lemurkhamen" story.

Story related and cannot be missed. Simply play through the first 4 levels to unlock this achievement.

  • Complete all levels in the "Revenge of the Robo-Penguins" story.

Story related and cannot be missed. Simply play through the levels 5, 6, 7 and 8 to unlock this achievement.

  • Earn a Silver Peanut Butter Winkie on every level in the "Crystal Staff of the Lemurkhamen" story.

    See "Treasure Hunter".

  • Earn a Gold Peanut Butter Winkie on every level in the "Revenge of the Robo-Penguins" story

    See "Treasure Hunter".

  • Find all twelve chameleons in the "Revenge of the Robo-Penguins" story.

    See "Chameleon Collector".

  • Earn a Silver Peanut Butter Winkie on every level in the "Revenge of the Robo-Penguins" story.

    See "Treasure Hunter".

  • Earn a Gold Peanut Butter Winkie on every level in the "Crystal Staff of the Lemurkhamen" story.

These achievements are based on how well you perform during the level. You increase your score by getting snow cones, destroying objects, performing the "actions" quickly and finding the hidden chameleons. You get silver almost automatically and then just need a few more points to reach gold. There was little effort involved. I got gold on the first try for every level throughout the game except for level 12. That was the only level that I needed to replay for a better score.

    • "Treasure Hunter" is unlocked after getting all Golds on levels 1 through 4.
    • "Robot Wrangler" is unlocked after getting all Golds on levels 5 through 8.
    • "Dolphin Domination" is unlocked after getting all Golds on levels 9 through 12.
  • Find all twelve chameleons in the "Crystal Staff of the Lemurkhamen" story.

    See "Chameleon Collector".

  • Get perfect on a Rico Explosive.

During the third level, you will come across the first opportunity to toss an explosive. Simply perform an arm motion like you are throwing a bowling ball and the achievement unlocks. Again, as with the other mini "actions" do the motion quickly to get the "Perfect". You should be able to do this easily during this first opportunity as it repeats the movement a few times.

  • Get perfect on a Monkey Match.

Monkey match requires you to align pictures by moving your arms and pointing to them. On the very first opportunity (which happens on level 3) you only have to match two items. Match the squirrel to the acorn and then match the other 2 remaining pictures and the achievement unlocks.

  • Get perfect on a Belly Slide.

Once you see the Belly Slide sign just immediately duck down to get this with ease. The first opportunity comes during level 3 and you have multiple opportunities if you don't get it on your first try.

  • Get perfect on a Trivia challenge.

If you did not change the difficulty at the beginning, the first trivia challenge is quite easy. Just answer "OK" and the achievement unlocks.

If you get some other random question you can still get a perfect score by simply making a guess. If you guess right you win. There are a couple of trivia questions throughout the game so you are bound to get this automatically.

  • Get perfect on a Jump.

During the third level you will reach a scripted section where you have to jump. You will see a sign and the screen floor will be green. Just jump straight up to unlock this achievement.

  • Get perfect on a Hang Time.

The first opportunity to get this occurs on level 5. Just hold hold both arms out and jump as soon as you are prompted on screen. Like all the "actions", the faster you do it will determine your score. Do the motion before the timer moves to far and it will unlock instantly.

  • Play the first Rico Target Challenge.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will come to Rico's first target challenge while playing through the first level. You just have to play it and the achievement unlocks instantly.

  • Played Marlene's Trivia.

Story related and cannot be missed. You will come to the first trivia challenge while playing through the first level. You just have to play it and the achievement unlocks instantly.

  • Get perfect on a Head Maze.

The first opportunity to get this occurs on level 5. For the maze games, you need to pick up and move the top of the semiconductor to the bottom half without touching any of the lines. This is easily done on the first attempt because there are no lines in your way and you have a straight shot for an easy achievement.

  • Poser

    20

Get perfect on a Strike A Pose.

The first opportunity to get this occurs on level 5. Just hold a jumping jack pose (extend arms and legs out to make and "X") as soon as you are prompted on screen. Like all the "actions", the faster you do it will determine your score. Do the motion before the timer moves to far and it will unlock instantly.

  • Get perfect on Rico's Launch.

The first opportunity to get this occurs on level 5. Just push both arms up as prompted on screen and like all the "actions", the faster you do it will determine your score. Do the motion before the timer moves to far and it will unlock.

  • Jump (non-challenge) ten times in one level.

During the course of playing through any level, simply jump straight up and your penguin will follow suit. Just do it 9 more times in the same level and the achievement is yours. This can be done as early as the first level if you like.

  • Get perfect on every challenge in a level.

This means that you have to get the "Perfect" rating (or equivalent) on every "action" challenge in a single level. You may get this naturally while you play through the game. The end of level result screen is slightly misleading. Instead of saying "Perfect" on the result screen, they should have called it "Completed" because it only tracks the number of events you completed which is not the same as getting perfect.

Basically every time you get to an action event, it puts up the icon on the right side of the screen and under that icon is a green bar that slowly shrinks. First make sure you are on easy as that will decrease the speed the bar shrinks. Now just complete the action before that green bar moves too much and you will get credit for a perfect. I think (although there is no way I can be sure) that as long as the word that pops up is blue, you get credit for the perfect. So Perfect, Excellent, Awesome, etc... count. I know Alright, So-So, Pretty Good, Nice, OK and Flubbed do NOT count.

If you do not get this through regular play to make this quick and easy, I'd recommend putting the game on Easy and then playing level 2. There are only 3 challenges in this level and they are easy motions to complete. You have a climb event, a throw event and a balance event. Just keep replaying until you get all blue comments.

  • Get the awesomeness meter to x5 for 20 seconds.

Once you max out your awesomeness meter, just continue through the level collecting snow cones and other items. The achievement pops immediately once you have reached the required amount of time. It unlocked for me during the first level without any effort.

  • Get the awesomeness meter to x5.

This will probably be the first achievement you get. Once you start the game, you will be moving side to side and collecting snow cones. Every one you collect will raise your awesomeness meter located at the top of your screen. Once you max it out, the achievement will unlock.

  • Get the awesomeness meter to x5 for 10 seconds.

See "Show Me How To Do That".

  • Play King Julien's Dance Party.

After completing the story and skipping the credits (if you like) you will be at the main menu. Select "Dance" and the achievement unlocks once the mini game loads. See "Shake Your Rear End" for more information on the other achievement related to this mini game.

  • Get perfect on a Balance.

For the balance mini game, you just need to keep your marker in the fat portion of the meter. Once you get in the zone, just stay there until you are all the way across. The zone does not move while you cross so this is made pretty easy especially if the sweet spot randomly appears right near the middle because you barely have to move.

  • Hit 25 Throw Targets.

This is cumulative and you should unlock this naturally while playing through the game. It unlocked for me while fighting the Robo Penguins during level 8. Just move your arm to target an item and then bend your arm and snap it forward to throw.

  • Get perfect on a Climb.

While playing through the game you will automatically swap out to the correct penguin when he is needed. During the first level you will get a brief tutorial on the Climb ability. Simply put both arms out and up like displayed on the screen (basically making an "L" shape with each arm) and you should not have any problem unlocking this on the first try.

  • Score a total of 1,000,000 points in any song in King Julien's Dance Party.

There are two options in Dance party: Match a Pose and Red Light, Green Light. You just need to accumulate a million points before the song ends.

I went with Red Light, Green Light and choose the Lemur's Song. All you have to do is run in place while swinging yours arms around as fast as possible (or any other movement you like) while you have the green light. This will rack up the points. As soon as you see the red light pop up, stop and freeze. You will lose points depending on how long it took you to stop and how still you stay while the red light is on. Just keep repeating until the song ends.

You should be able to get an average of 100,000 points (or more) per green light while losing about 20,000 points per red light and still score high enough for the achievement. I was able to get this on the first attempt so it should not be too much trouble.

If you do have trouble with this, NiteJokester came up with an alternative that you may try:

Take a small object (like the game case) and stand maybe 1-2 feet away from sensor and start waving it really fast. If you can get it to work, you should be getting 300,000-600,000 per green light and -400,000 per red light. Once you've finished, you should end up with over 2,000,000.

  • Play King Julien's Critique.

After completing the story and skipping the credits (if you like) you will be at the main menu. Select "Critique" and the achievement unlocks once the mini game loads. You don't even have to play it if you don't want to.
