XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Achievements

Xavier

10
Mind Control an Ethereal. Single player only.

Most important for this achievement is, that your Psi-Soldier has Psi-Inspiration as well as Mind Control and the Psi-Armor. You want your Psi-Soldier to have around 100 Will (more is better) with the Psi-Armor.

When you engage an Ethereal:
-Leave your Psi-Soldier out of sight of the Ethereal (even your Psi-Soldier can be mind-controlled and then you have to kill the Ethereal instead of mind controlling it yourself.)

-In the turn before you attempt the Mind Control, use your Psi-Inspiration so you get a +30 Will Buff.

-Then attempt the mind control.

TIP: You can also have a Support skill perk, "Combat Drugs". The smoke grenades of this Support add another 20 Will.

Buff your Will with the Combat Drugs smoke grenade and Psi Inspiration ability. De-buff the Ethereal with Mindfray (it stacks).

Try to get a Support soldier with PSI abilities. Take Mindfray, Psi Inspiration, Mind Control, Smoke Grenade and Combat Drugs. Wear Psi Armor and a Mind Shield would not hurt to have as well.

Ok, did some testing on the Xavier achievement. A LOT of the information listed in the guide is INCORRECT.

1. Positive buffs do not stack. At all. No reason to use combat stims and smoke grenade. No reason to use the psi buff and smoke grenade. Use one, that's it. The others are a waste.

2. Damage does not matter. My percentage was exactly the same going from full health to 1 square left. Taking your time to weaken the enemy is a waste of time.

3. Wait until you have psi armor. It becomes a joke after this. Just build it, and instead of finishing the game search for UFO's until you get one. It will have an Ethereal on it.

I used psi armor, combat stims, and a single mind fray debuff and I had a 74% chance of successful mind control. That's right, 74%. My soldier without the psi

I have a save where I can keep retrying to mind control at a 70% chance and must have tried about 15 times now and it still keeps showing up as FAILED, FML!

That's because the game automatically decides the action for you to hit or miss on the turn even before you save.

How are you people even getting 9% chance let alone above 70%? My chance to mind control is 8% no matter what with a fully leveled fully upgraded support psi soldier with psi armor hopped up on combat drugs targeting an Ethereal that has been Mind Frayed.

@7 Maybe you're using a soldier that has weakened will? Maybe by debuffs of combat injuries or the psi guy got critically wounded. Level of difficulty also makes it harder to hit. So impossible mode makes it nearly impossible to control an Ethereal. Classic brings it down quite a bit as well.

Note - I did it the hard way on the final mission. I reccomend you don't.

Here's my advice: I used an Assault class soldier but any class except Sniper would probably be suitable. I reccomend you have Psi Armor. Combat Stims and Mind Shields won't hurt you either. (Save before you begin to try). When you find an Ethereal, Mindfray him once for good measure. Then your chance to Mind Control him should be around 40%-50% without stims, and 60%-80% with them.

Remember achievements don't disapear when you reload saves. If the Ethereal kills/Mind Controls a teammate, keep working towards the achievement. Your squad will still be intact in the reload.
