XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Achievements

Lone Wolf

Clear a UFO crash site with one soldier on Classic or Impossible difficulty.

This can only be done on a crash site mission and requires a single soldier to kill all aliens on the map. Although it can be completed on ether Classic or Impossible difficulty, it will be much easier on Classic.

The easiest mission to achieve this will be the Small Scout crash sites, as they only have anywhere between 5-8 enemies. Small Scout UFOs will appear early in the game, then randomly towards the end. If you choose to attempt this late in the game, then any or your upgraded soldiers with decent weapons and armor shouldn’t prove too difficult to clear the map on their own.

An alternate strategy is to do this on the very first crash site mission as this is guaranteed to have 4 Sectoids and an outsider. Start a new game, disable the tutorial as this gives you better odds of one soldier being chosen as an Assault. Play through the 2nd mission (abduction) focusing on ranking up your Assault soldier to corporal, (or Squaddie if you missed out on the first mission) and at the end choose the ‘Tactical Sense’ perk. An alternate to the assault class is the sniper utilising the Snap Shot and Headshot ability.

Make sure to save before you deploy to the crash site. (This will mean that every time you reload you receive a different map but this shouldn’t make a big difference to the strategy.) Once on the ground, move up one side of the map slowly. Ideally you want to engage the Sectoids two at a time. With a little luck, 1 of the 2 Sectoids you uncover will mind merge with the other. If this is the case use Run and Gun to move into a position to take out the one doing the mind merging, so that by killing it, you also take out the 2nd Sectoid. If using a sniper, be sure to use headshot on the mind merging Sectoid or take out the Sectoid posing the greatest threat first.

Be sure to reload, and hunker down for 2 turns to recharge your Run and Gun, then repeat for the other 2 Sectoids. Sometimes you won’t be able to get close enough to make use of Run and Gun, so fall back on moving once and using a grenade. Also sometime the Sectoids won’t mind merge, so it is best to fall back and engage them one by one.

Once you have cleared the Sectoids, move up to the UFO and take up position at the front near the door. Do not approach from the side as this can often mean the Outsider will spawn on your second move. Once you are near the door, end your turn, then open the door to make the Outsider spawn. Chances are it will run directly for you. Move inside the UFO giving yourself a clear shot and take out the Outsider. The achievement will unlock on the mission results screen.

This achievement relies heavily on luck so it may take several times to get the right alien placement/strategies before it works in your favor.

NOTE: Some people have reported this achievement to be glitched and will not unlock if you reload a save at any point during the mission. A good strategy is to make a save before leaving the base and reload from that point if you die during the mission.

Eh, as long as you are on board for this outting, you're ok in my book.

Believe a soldier can only fire an RPG/Launcher once per mission so blasting everything like you could in the original may not be an option here. From what I have seen, can't scavenge and use enemy weapons either.

When you go for this one, try to use a female soldier to knock out this secret too...

Flight of the Valkyries 10GS
Win a mission with an all-female squad.

Keep on forgetting about this one, should be fairly easy to knock off on an early mission.

Good call about the female char J4ckyb0y, although if you're also going for 'Ain't no Cavalry Comin' best make sure it's one of your starting chars.

I was unable to get it by switching difficulty before starting the mission.
Not sure if it was because of the difficulty change or because i was relying on mind control.
I'm pretty sure i read somewhere ( maybe?) that SHIVs also void the achievement.
About to try on a ufo landing rather than crash (as i forget is said crash site), will post if it works.

I'm using the last savegame before embarking on the last mission (which I played on normal). I switched difficulty to classic after getting the UFO down and cleared with just a female soldier. None of the achievements (this and valkyries) popped up. Strange, cause the last one shouldn't be difficulty related.

Possible factors: You can't do it with one girl. Has to be a full squad (?)
Classic achievements must be done through a full game on classic (?)

OK. It seems that if you take an UFO down, even if you switch difficulty, once you send the skyranger and land it reverts back to normal.

BUT this time I switched difficulty before engaging it with the Firethingie (the savegame had it popped in the screen, though). It turned into a different mission, more difficult. It remained on classic the whole mission. Finished it and... Nope. None of the achievements. So now I just need to confirm that you need a fresh start or find a new UFO on classic.

The mission sometimes changes regardless of difficulty. There is an element of randomness to those.

Ok. It unlocked on a new game I started on classic, first try. No reloading, so I can't give any news about that.

What kind of soldier do you guys recommend for this one? And early game or late game? I'm thinking about trying late game with an assault psi. Mind Controlling guys to help complete it.

Didn't pop for landed UFO. However, I think I changed the difficulty to classic just after starting the tutorial. Maybe that messed everything up for me.

When I got this achievement I did it really early with a Sniper. I just moved extremely cautiously, whenever I triggered a group I moved back and made them come to me. I also did my best to use full cover. I had to reload a couple of times but I got it. Oh, and I also started the game on classic.

Sniper is definitely the class to use to get this. Once you get a sniper to Colonel you can attack twice per round, and you will also have the recon probe to help you scout two areas. The probe is nice since it doesn't trigger the aliens to attack right away.

Did it with a assault class on the very first downed UFO mission. Run&Gun + grenades were a gamechanger for me. Classic difficulty of course.

If the little aliens boost each other with their mind connection, target the one in the back that is boosting with the Run&Gun. The other one will be killed by feedback immediately even if at full health. In case of big group, use grenade. Finaly, between each groups of alien, take time to recharge skills and weapon. Its not a race and patience give that chiev on a silver plater.

using a HEAVY Colonel with the extra rocket AND the 'Shredder' rocket ability. this gives you 3 rockets. as long as you have about 75 or higher PSI [or not] you can wear the Mind Shield cap. this gives you a good defence from ethereals and if you have PSI then your PSI abilities will be much stronger [even mind controlling ethereals!].
Mind Control a Muton elite or others forces enemies to deal with them first saving your rockets for the ethereal which is by far the toughest. 2 standard rockets kills an ethereal, i find. or muton elite hvy plasma attack then use gren on elite to weaken it.

oh, forgot to say.. use the fusion launcher, not the standard launcher. also, as a HEAVY, having the ability 'Bullet swarm' to fire a rocket then get outta sight of the ethereal, etc is a good idea so choose that instead of 'Holo-targetting' even tho Holotargetting is very useful for suppression and boosting snipers etc.
