XCOM: Enemy Unknown

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Achievements

Ain't No Cavalry Comin'

Have a soldier survive every mission in a full game.

This requires a single soldier to not only participate, but also survive every mission in a full game. It is highly recommended this be attempted on easy difficulty but can be achieved on any difficulty.

Unless you are lucky, you will need to make good use of the save game system, reloading if your chosen soldier dies or sustains massive damage. While it may be tempting to keep them towards the back of the map, it is a good idea to use them as the main soldier in your squad, as participating in every mission will allow them to rank up quickly, making them a powerhouse in the later stages of the game.

It is also worth mentioning that your soldier can sustain some damage, as often they will heal in time for the next mission, but this is risky as a mission can pop up at anytime.

Once you complete the final mission and ‘win’ the game, the achievement will unlock.

TIP: When selecting a new game, disable the tutorial as this will give you four soldiers to start with, so you will have a better chance of at least one making it through every mission.

Exactly what about injuries? do they count against this achievement? like they get wounded and cant go on the next mission.

No. Whoever dies, is gone. Forever. So best have an ill sick dope team to survive or make one specific great buddy character and Don't let him die. Until the end of the game.

If a soldier is wounded and misses a mission you fail. They have to set foot on the ground for every mission you complete. I believe you can decline to go on a mission completely if your soldier is wounded and the achievement will not be invalidated (not tested).

The best thing to do is to repeat the first mission over and over again until you get a sniper or two. Then, make sure the snipers survive. As long as you don't completely botch the mission snipers should never even take damage, and they deal quite a lot too so they are not useless. Having your soldier be Assault puts them at risk far too much and you may have to take them out of the thick of battle, which is riskier.

Shoot, wish I knew this before I started, well I'll just have to do it on my next run. Definitely easy with a sniper, my sniper never got touched and was easily the most effective class in outdoor missions

So it doesn't matter if your one soldier becomes incapped just as long as he survives the mission and is available to start the next one, yes?

Sounds bit annoying then - unless on easy/normal difficulty [am on classic], always trying to be positive - good thing is that ironman mode is not required.
nice one Snowed

The character I am forced to use is the heavy I obtained from the tutorial mission. He does a good amount of damage, but it's almost a wasted space because I have to keep him back by the sniper most of the time in Overwatch.

Might be a good idea to buy that officer training thing which halves recovery time too, just in case...

Is it possible that you just need to have one soldier survive every mission, not necessarily the same soldier? As long as someone survives the mission it still counts towards attains this one?

@15 No, you need to have one specific soldier survive every mission. I beat every mission, so at least one guy survived each one, but achievement didn't unlock.

I'm not sure you can ignore missions though. I just finished the game, my sniper did every mission except the tutorial and one mission I skipped cause he was injured. Didn't get this ach.
So either having done the tutorial screwed it up, or the fact I skipped one.

@17 I believe both would be a factor, but certainly skipping one was.

I just got it though I *did* ignore one UFO once, since my dedicated soldier (sniper, indeed) was then still injured after a battle. So I conclude that it *is* in fact ok to ignore a mission, just not to engage in one w/o the original soldier.

I did not do any tutorial that round, so no need to do that just for the achievement (but I guess that if you do do it, your chosen soldier has to be in the original setup, although that is just logic talking, not experience).

I had this pop on my impossible playthrough. Got lucky and all of my guys survived the first mission (cemetery map is easiest because of ability to flank), and one of them became a sniper. Snipers hardly ever take damage, and if you match that with rapid recovery the very few times they do (e.x. one mission he was the only survivor, and I think he was out for 4 days with rapid, got lucky again and no mission request).

In short:
Easiest with sniper.
Have to survive all missions you accept(you can skip a mission and still get the achievement, friend of mine did).
Invest in Rapid Recovery as quickly as you sanely can.
If you're going for 100%, might as well do it on easy since you have to beat the game 5 times for continental.

I got this achievement and I skipped a council mission. So you are allowed to skip missions.

either get this on 2nd mission on 'easy' WITHOUT the tutorial.

u don't need that cheevo anymore and the Heavy is pretty useless if you get the abilities wrong-
i chose 'Bullet Swarm' as Corp[bad];'Rapid Reaction' on Lieut [when 100% dmg vs robots is better w 'HEAT Ammo'; 'Grenadier' was stupid cos i never used my slot for grens cos i needed it for armor boost & 'Danger Zone' means more targets give ur guys +10 aim.

as ppl r saying, CHOOSE SNIPER! Assault & Support troops often r in LoF. even an Assault guy can take over 10 dmg [that's 10 days healing!] and losing about 7-10 WILL

oh, one more thing.. the Heavy in the tutorial is never PSI. so go for sniper in next game wo tutorial and hope he's got good WILL and PSI

Yes, with everybody here, Sniper are the best with this achievement. Here is what I did with it, squadsight vs. snapshot, gunslinger vs. Dam good ground, Disabiable shot vs. Battle scanner. In Zone and Double Tap are both good it all depends on your play style. I equipped him with an improved scope and level 3 plasma pistol.

Since the volunteer technically dies at the end of the final mission will that fail the achievement if you used your survivor for the volunteer?

I did this with a sniper without psi training because it takes 10 days to test. Too risky hoping no missions come up. I used squad sight and double tap and my guy barely took a scratch.
