x360a's Best of Show - E3 2009

Written Saturday, June 06, 2009 By Dan Webb

This year’s E3 has all but wrapped up now. The respective publishers and developers are having their stages packed up and shipped home from the now desolate Los Angeles Convention Centre - the home to more than 40,000 games industry folk this past week. Since the show closed its doors and after we'd seen everything we could possibly see, it came that time where we sat down and thrashed out our winners to give you our "Best of Show" results from E3 2009 - the biggest show in the gaming calendar.

Best Press Conference of the Show

Bit of a no brainer this year for us. Microsoft’s press conference had just what we had asked for which was essentially - no puffs, promises and statistics of how awesome they think they are. Instead, what we had was a bombardment of upcoming games (both exclusive and multi plat), a new high tech peripheral, Metal Gear Solid on the Xbox 360 and even a few Beatles (not of the bug variety) - quite the coup if you ask us. As for everyone else, despite a few new cool trailers and the odd great game announcement, the rest of the publishers’ press conferences just failed to match the impact of Microsoft’s. Note to Ubisoft for next year ... less talk, let your games do the talking.

Winner – Microsoft

Best Stand of the Show

There were many solid stands at the show this year and it was most definitely a battle of the wallets with each publisher trying to outdo its nearest rival. All of the publishers had fantastically crafted stands and whilst Microsoft and Ubisoft lost points for a sheer lack of pods and keeping the best stuff behind closed doors, Activision was losing points for being way too loud with not enough substance on the show floor. It was EA taking home the gold this year as they put out plenty of pods, with plenty of variation and even allowed their premium titles to be seen and sometimes even played, by anyone who was willing to queue for a short period.

Winner - EA

Best Looker of the Show

There were many beautiful looking titles at this year’s E3 but of course, we could only have one winner. Titles like Forza 3, Dirt 2, Fight Night Round 4, Alan Wake and BRINK all looked utterly fantastic, but they were no match for Eidos’ Arkham Asylum. Everything was spot on with the upcoming Rocksteady title from the character rendering and lighting, to the textures and the animations. It was hard to find a fault with the game’s visuals at all and Batman: Arkham Asylum is truly one beautiful looking title and deserving of this year’s Looker award.

Winner – Arkham Asylum

Disappointment of the Show

With the show being full of titles that naturally lived up to their potential and some that went above and beyond that, it was pretty difficult to pick one title out of that and label it with the term disappointment. However, after many hours of musing over a few choice beverages, we came to agree that one title failed to really make an sort of an impact on us - that title being Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII. If the under-whelming Microsoft press conference wasn’t enough of a let-down, the fact that Final Fantasy was only available behind closed doors for select press members and not on the show floor really left us with a bitter taste in our mouths. I mean, would it have hurt to put the more than well received demo that Japan saw recently out on the show floor for the masses? Computer says no. Computer also says ... missed opportunity Square!

Winner – Final Fantasy XIII

Surprise of the Show

We weren’t really sure what to expect from Splash Damage and Bethesda’s behind closed doors showing of their upcoming shooter, BRINK, out 2010. Instead of the usual tech demo of a game so far from release, we were able to see the title in action and boy, were we impressed. The title, considering it’s still over a year off, looks pretty damn beautiful already and seeing the impressive detail and customisation in the character creation aspect was great to see. However, Bethesda didn’t stop there as they showed off the impressive SMART button (a simple Mirror’s Edge style mechanic), the ability to choose what you did to advance your side’s cause and the interesting tactic of trying to blur the distinction between single player, co-op and multiplayer, which was enough to leave us feeling pretty damn happy with BRINK’s first showing at this year’s E3. We look forward to seeing a lot more of it.

Winner – BRINK

Best Action Title of the Show

This was one of the toughest categories to judge this year simply because of all the talent on show. Coming up just behind this year’s winner was Remedy’s Alan "we’re glad to see you’re alive and looking well" Wake, Splinter Cell "how many times are we going to see the same walkthrough" Conviction and Batman "looking hot-as-hell" Arkham Asylum, but they were no match for Assassin’s "we’ve upped the ante" Creed 2. Ubisoft Montreal’s sequel to the impressive selling original is looking to fix all that held the original back from complete greatness. With new weapons, new gadgets and plenty of more variety planned, Assassin’s Creed 2 does just enough to take the prize home this year. November 2009 just can’t come quick enough.

Winner – Assassin’s Creed 2

Best Racer of the Show

Two titles really struck out as being at the tip of the racing genre this year and they were; Forza 3 and Dirt 2. Unfortunately there was no competition from Need For Speed: Shift and Split/Second as they really failed to"wow" us, but against Forza 3 and Dirt 2, you can’t really be surprised. Taking home the gold his year for its sheer amount of content, beautiful visuals, realistic handling and attention to detail is Turn 10’s Forza 3. The title, due to ship this October, will feature 400+ cars featuring 50+ manufacturers, 100 tracks with 60% of those being real world tracks, spread across 2 discs; no other title screams value for money than Forza 3, and is surely a must buy for any racing fan this fall.

Winner – Forza 3

Best RPG Title of the Show

The resounding winner for the Best RPG Title of E3 2009 is BioWare’s hugely impressive Mass Effect 2. It’s no secret that the original was a huge favourite of mine but even I could recognise its drawbacks ... those of which are nowhere in sight for the RPG title, due out 2010. Mass Effect 2 is set to feature an improved inventory system, improved unchartered world navigation and landing procedures with a new vehicle to take advantage of, bigger and better guns, interactive cut scenes, new biotic powers and an all new powerful and dark second act plot. Oh, and Shepard lives, but we kind of already knew that. After seeing 20 minutes of the game in action, we have no hesitations about how fantastic the title will be when it hits in early 2010.

Winner – Mass Effect 2

Best Shooter of the Show

There were some great shooters on show at this year’s E3 but Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Bioshock 2 and BRINK failed to match the might of Modern Warfare 2 which seemed to check all the boxes. Behind the hustle and bustle of the show floor we managed to see an extended walkthrough of the same mission that was shown at the Microsoft press conference and we feel like they cut out the best bits for that show, to wow the press. Modern Warfare 2, although not an amazing graphical update to the original Modern Warfare, seems to have nailed down the whole atmosphere, storytelling and adrenaline filled action we’ve come to expect from the guys at Infinity Ward. Early signs point to it matching or even eclipsing the success of its prequel which is no easy feat. Easily one of the breathtaking games of the show.

Winner – Modern Warfare 2

Best of Show – E3 2009

There is no doubting that this year’s E3 was a successful show in terms of amazing titles on show for all to see, which makes this category so difficult to judge. For us though, Mass Effect 2 takes home the cheese this year, but it wasn’t an easy decision. The runners for the big prize this year were made up of sequels and Alan Wake, and for us, Mass Effect 2 has made the biggest leaps and bounds from the original in the series compared to its competitors. Being the only title in the history of gaming to carry decisions across games is an impressive feat, but doing all that whilst at the same time improving the original’s faults and adding a ton of other new features to get you immersed even more. All that means is that Mass Effect 2 is truly above and beyond the impressive original, and more importantly, our Game of the Show for E3 2009.

Winner – Mass Effect 2

Check back over next week and beyond for all the previews and interviews of the hottest games from this year’s E3.

Wow. It's so amazing an unexpected that Webby would post Mass Effect 2 as the best of show. I just didn't see that coming at all. :p

I agree with just about everything up there. Except for Batman. What I've seen of the game isn't anymore impressive than say Mass Effect. It does look good but maybe not THAT good.

But I guess having nothing but AC2 and MAss Effect up there would make you look like a bit of a fanboy. ;)

Assassin's Creed 2 was the best game of E3 for me. Nearly every bit of news that came out about it was new. I really didn't get a whole lot of new info out of MW2 or B:AA. Admittedly, I haven't been paying attention to ME2 as much as the other games, but that's probably because I have yet to play the first one.

I am so glad MW2 didn't get Best of E3. It's overhyped. And gonna be nothing different to CoD4, just new perks, and guns.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 1.5 imo.

Do some of you actually really look at these games and think? The upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is not just a revamp of it's predecessor. There is a lot more action, another continuing nice storyline that made Call of Duty 4 so compelling, and think of the possibilities in multi-player or even co-op! There's a lot to be excited there for veterans and new-comers alike.

That being said, I am really awaiting for Mass Effect 2. I absolutely loved Mass Effect and am very glad BioWare is still doing such a great job!

Batman FTW!!!!!!!!!!

Call me crazy, but the only games listed above due out this year that I give a shit about, are Batman, MW2, and Forza 3.

Mass effect and Assassins creed just didnt do it for me, so Im not that amped up for the sequels. Microsoft did blow away the competiton.

I do agree, I just have an odd sense of humour that an XBOX360 specific website votes the xbox stand at E3 the best. I'm sure you'll agree it's a pointless award. The admin aren't exactly going to vote for the PS3 stand are they?

From the FFXIII award for disappointment: "If the under-whelming Microsoft press conference wasn’t enough of a let-down, the fact that Final Fantasy was only available behind closed doors for select press members and not on the show floor really left us with a bitter taste in our mouths." Does that make any sense? You guys just said a few awards above that Microsoft had the best press conference and now you say it is under-whelming and a let-down? I see a typo!

Good result, but when it comes to racing award, froza or dirt, i would prefer dirt, more intense and grippin, froza gets abit dull and when it gets dull you hire a driver instead of playin it, thats why i prefer dirt. but ill still get both of them.

@ Ebonix, mircosoft put out alot of perfomance in this years e3, i didnt hear much for sony, ea also had a good night, alot of companys where up for confrences, but all the focus was on microsoft.

Well I guess I'd go ahead and say I agree with every award. Are these awards subject to Xbox games only?

I'm kind of surprised no mention of God of War 3 if Ps3 games count. But if it is just 360, then yes, AC2 for the win.

I honestly believe that if Microsoft's press conference was as much of a let down as Nintendo's was that they would have voted Sony's the best one. Their conference was good, the random video clips with now game title got annoying though...

I agree with pretty much every choice you made. My surprise of the show was Final Fantasy 14 Online... but I'm sure you were only talking about 360 games :P

@40 - Yeah, it looked beautiful but it was CGI and we're not sure whether it's 360 bound yet ... so we discounted it for those reasons.

Just a few FYI's for people after reading the comments.

MW2 doesn't seem that much a graphical update (as stated) but the action was a lot more intense and Hollywood as it was in MW1 and it was great. Look out for the proper in depth preview later on in the week.

As for Halo winning anything ... Hello? It's an add-on essentially. Halo 3 with a twist and will be releasing at budget price. Hardly award worthy.

@39 the only reason your calling the halo franchise "rubbish" is because you suck at it. With that being said you probably play COD cause its the easiest online game.
It takes literally 9% skill, 91% knowing how to pull the R trigger and not being blind.

@ #48 I agree. It is an add on and it has always been billed as an add on by the Bungie crew. That said, I can't seem to find this budget price that we have been hearing for a while now, anywhere!
A few sites, such as amazon and gamestop have it listed at $60.00 WTF? I was certain I would be getting it until I seen that price. Lets hope that changes...

Halo ODST offers a whole new full length campaign with a full 1000 GS achievable. That being said, it is an add on but not an add on being a DLC style add on, its an add on to an already established campaign in order to explain many questions that have been asked.

@43, roshambo1-
Errrrr.... No. I personally find the game mechanics of Halo weak, and find that Halo is more of a "9% skill and 91% knowing how to pull the R trigger" game than CoD, and that's saying something. I don't really play CoD that much, you're right, it IS fairly easy. Still a cracking game though, no one can deny that. I'm a huge Gears fan actually. Which certainly isn't easy. Something you probably don't play because you get your *rse kicked, because its 91% skill and 9% knowing how to pull the R trigger.

See, I can make below-the-belt comments too.

@willoverthemoon
See you just say that halo is 9% skill because you dont actually "play" halo the way it was meant to be played which is on LAN using the MLG settings. COD was meant for online play thats why It literally cant be played competitively. Then you go on to talk about gears No one said that doesnt take skill. Sure it takes skill and no it isnt easy online. Halo and Gears are probably the 2 games that take the most amount of skill.
Willoverthemoon.....I dont have a problem with you at all I actually like because your the only one who actually puts up an arguement that makes sense. You should go to MLGpro.com and get into that community.

Why did Lords of Shadow not make the list somewhere?!

Oh well, heres my opinion

E3 Top 3
1. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
2. Project Natal
3. Left 4 Dead 2
Honorable Mention: Borderlands

It was a great E3 all around, looking foward towards next year.

I agree with that, about CoD not being able to be played competetively easily. Fair call. Haha cheers bro, I just didn't appreciate it when you assumed I'm into games because the R trigger's easy to pull, no skill and that. No hard feelings. I guess I assumed you were one of these people that thinks they know it all about gaming simply because they play Halo 3 online a lot, when they really know sh*t all, but I was wrong. Yeah cheers, I've heard about MLG, got a mate who's into that. Might take a look sometime. Peace, might see you round.

I was just mad that they didnt even mention ODST. People keep saying its a game add-on which is wrong. If it was just a game add-on they would have just put it on the marketplace. Its a whole new game with new characters, weapons, campaign, and a totally different way of playing a halo game.
P.S.-
I Love you

I think some game arent there , like lord of shadow , because we havent seen any gameplay video, it was only a cgi video like star wars of the old republic.

On topic, for me the best of E3 2009 was FF13, bad company 2 and dirt2 . Ff13 was the most beautiful ( every other games site said that too).cod mw 2 will be good but I dont think it will that good, mw1 was good nothing more.

I,m not sure about mass effect 2 yet , I'm actually doing first 1 at this moment and so far I found the game mediocre, I cant see how this game got 9.5/10 but I'm not done yet.

Oh I forgot halo 3 odst , I'm not a halo fan but I played halo 3 , the graphic dosnt seem improve and yes its an add-on , en extension of halo 3 with different character. To those complaining Bungie already said the campagne will not be long ( around 5-8hrs) and the multiplayer will be merge with halo 3 multiplayer. So no, its not a game alone , its an extension. Anyway halo is obsolete, everyone are bored of halo, its time to move on.

As long as MW2 doesn't do that TERRIBLE split screen crap like they had in COD5 with it being off centred with the skulls or whatever, I'm on board all the way for MW3, MW4, etc...

why are people complaining about best of show? It isnt about the game itself, but how they showed off their game or whatever at the show. All about presentation.

like a lot of people Im probably looking forward to MW2 most out of all the games being released this fall but i already know that its going to be a quality game with great online and offline gameplay. Im really looking forward to Crackdown 2..... I loved the first one and i see it as one of the most underrated games on the 360, i will admit the halo 3 beta was a big reason i bought it =P but i think it turned out to be great fun. I haven't seen much of it but the trailer yet but thats going to be a game i look out for.

I understand why L4D2 wasn't put up for one of these, as much as i love the first, i think the sequel will need more than a few chainsaws and frying pans or whatever melee weapons they introduce to make it enough of a significant difference between the two games, im jus

How can people argue about conference winner? Project natal, sky sports, zune, facebook, twitter, etc. What did the other systems announce anywhere as good as that?

at 77 , when you watch or read interview , a lot of developper are saying CoD6 and its still a cod games. The next treyarch games is called cod 7 , so modern warfare 2 is still cod6.

people, people there is no call of duty prefix on modern warfare 2. I have multiple news stories and articles to prove it! -

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&rlz=1C1CHMP_en-GBGB291GB303&q=call+of+duty+dropped+from+modern+warfare+2&btnG=Search&meta=

Call it 'MW2' if you want an abbreviation

Best in Show at E3 2k9 = Webb's interview by onlyxbox.com!

But seriously, it was good in general to see E3 taking a big step in returning to the stupid amount of pomp that it had in its glory days. Good for them.

As for the games? I'm just glad that developers are pushing out some serious quality lately, it's refreshing. I still believe a lot of good games could be GREAT if they'd give them 6 more months of dev time, but oh well.

Great coverage guys, good picks, thanks for not throwing ODST up there, I think Bungie needs to seriously considering getting a new cow to milk, how bout bringing back Marathon or Myth?

@65:
the game is put out on a disc. therefore being in a seperate case. it will be just as long as the halo 3's campaign. it will include every halo 3 map including the last of the 6 mythic maps, along with some new odst maps.

I'm glad Halo didn't make it. It's such a stale, generic game... I get tired of the laser tag cheesy feel. It's especially nice because we can all see that the Xbox360 is stronger than the PS3 or WII and the console won't fail when Halo's developer milks the last few drops out of it.

I'm not some Halo fan boy or COD but you cannot argue with popularity simple as that. Massive conference for Microsoft, however sony had some really good stuff too still a tight contest. (Microsoft better though)

Peace

SOOOOO excited for Assassin's Creed 2 and Modern 2 they are definitely gonna be the two best games of 09 bar none. I wish Mass Effect had had better gameplay, the story was amazing but the gameplay was so lacking.

I always read all the news but rarely post any comment; but ME is my favorite game ever and reading that ME 2 is a la Cliff bigger, better and more bad ass just makes me feel the need to write it... Can't wait for more intergalactic action xD
