Festive Feature: Top 5 Co-op Games of 2009

As we did last year – and we’ll continue to do every year from now until the end of time (fact) – in the build up to Christmas, we like to celebrate the year’s highlights through a series of Top 5 features. Our Game of the Year awards of course will run as they did last year (New Year’s Eve), but these Top 5’s allow us to step out of the rigid categories and focus on some of the cool and fun stuff from the year.

In the first of 5 Top 5’s – running everyday from now up until Christmas Eve – we take a look at a phenomenon that has taken the gaming world by storm; co-op. There’s nothing better than sitting down with a mate either in your front room or someone who’s on the other side of the world and experiencing some of the year’s best titles, because you know what they say about shared experiences, right? And I’m not talking threesomes here. 2009 was a good year for co-op titles, an exceptionally good year indeed.

Coming in at a respectable number 5 this year is Capcom’s well received Resident Evil 5. Throwing you into the shoes of Chris and Sheva, players must work together to capture and eliminate a new biological weapon in Africa or be eaten alive. Whilst the split-screen in Resi 5 wasn’t exactly ideal, playing it over Xbox Live was a proverbial blast. Having to work together, watch each other’s back, whilst all the time being chased by crazy infected locals, well, if this isn’t what co-op was designed for, I have no idea what is.

Quite easily the best addition to the Modern Warfare franchise this year came in the form of the fantastic “Spec-Ops” mode. A mode that bundled all the fun and frustration of the Mile High Club from Call of Duty 4 into one teamwork driven package. With 23 challenges in all, Spec-Ops mode is a barrel of laughs, a test of skill and something that adds another dimension to co-op. Unfortunately as we all know, the more the better when it comes to co-op and we wish that Infinity Ward would have adapted the mode to fit 4 players. Despite that, it contains hours and hours of goodness for you and a buddy.

As an overall package, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising was a decent game. A little glitchy at times, but the game’s selling point was quite easily its co-op. In fact, it saved the game from slipping into the abyss.

Being able to enter a sandbox world with up to 3 friends to execute some clinical military manoeuvres in one of the most realistic shooters we’ve ever played was a sheer joy. If there is one reason to play Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising in the coming months, it’s definitely got to be its co-op. The ally AI isn’t too smart, so bring friends.

The original to our number two spot was voted as the best co-op game in our Game of the Year awards last year. The sequel to that came as a shock to pretty much everyone when it was announced at E3 this year. Not only was this Valve’s shortest ever turnaround for a sequel, but it was coming out less than a year after the original.

When Left 4 Dead 2 shipped in November, the sequel built upon the foundations of its original and expanded the overall package. More game modes, new special infected, the inclusion of melee weapons, new guns, new items and more. The end outcome; one of the best console co-op experiences ever created. Still, it wasn’t quite enough to take our top spot... we saved that for something totally original and a little more innovative.

Borderlands takes our top spot this year and rightly so. Offering the chance for 4 players to hit the wastelands of Pandora and do something consoles players have never really been able to do together is a true success story. What’s this new thing I’m talking about? Looting of course! Proper hardcore looting! There’s nothing like rolling through a town full of bandits, making short work of them and looting their dead bodies and chests to take all you can. All you can do then is marvel at the lucky son-of-a-bitch that gets the rare weapon. Did I say marvel? I meant be supremely jealous.

The procedurally created weapons gives players an incentive to keep slugging on to find just one more and being able to do that with friends in a beautiful environment is what makes the game our number one. Played alone, Borderlands is a decent game. Played with friends, Borderlands is definitely the co-op experience of the year.

Check back tomorrow for the second of our five festive Top 5’s.

I didn't think Flashpoint was that good but after it reaching the top 5 I'll definitely have to pick it up, after I reach 10th Prestige :P

Borderlands is by far the best co-op experience for the Xbox 360, just needs a bigger level cap :P

Hopefully getting L4D2 and Borderlands for Christmas. Being the #2 and 1 spot makes me want to play them even more.
As for OF:DR, I have yet to play it, although it did look interesting. :)

I'd put MW2 Spec Ops at #1. But, that's my opinion. The missions were fun as hell, and pretty challenging. Borderlands is super easy in Co-Op, which takes away the fun factor for me.

@#21 - Army of Two: TFD, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Inversion, Halo: Reach (not confirmed, but it's a given), Inversion, Aliens: Colonial Marines, to name a few.

MW2 doesn't deserve a spot on this list. Lame one-off missions that are just a rehash of campaign levels while IW claims they couldn't have actually had you play through the campaign co-operatively, coupled with only two-player co-op? Please, that's pathetic. Borderlands is the rightful king of co-op games out right now. Go Gearbox!

I knew #1 would be either L4D2 or Borderlands. Saw L4D2 and I was like "Nooo!" but at the same time it seems fair to give Borderlands #1 because it's not a sequel and L4D got it last year. Good list. Also, thanks for informing me as to why people seemed to think MW2 was fun to play together. I was like, "wtf?" every time somebody said that.

Yeah, this list is solid. I guess I'll check out Flashpoint now that there's a reason, lol. Borderlands is great--expert choice there! Resident Evil 5 fails for me just because of the menu system. Honestly, the best aspect of co-op in RE5 was switching up for poison eggs. Where was ODST? Firefight and the campaign were a blast! Better than RE5 FFS.

Good list. I love Borderlands but I disagree on it being above L4D2. In my opinion, L4D is one of the most tense and exciting co-operative experiences I have ever taken part in. Borderlands kind of just felt like a buddy tagging along.

My personal top 3:

1. Resident Evil 5
2. Left 4 Dead 2
3. Saint's Row 2 (PC)

And my list isn't just a "what game did I think was best", it's a "what has the best co-op", I loved Re5 in split-screen co-op because in hard it requires a lot of teamwork.

L4D2 requires teamwork but not nearly as much, it's still a lot of fun and my personal GOTY but it's somehow just not as tactical and co-op focused as RE5 in my opinion.

Saint's Row may require very little teamwork but it was just so much fun playing in a huge sandbox game with a friend.

And I really just don't like Borderlands, let the flaming begin...

As much as I love L4D2, I have to agree with Borderlands. But as #43 said ODST is better than resi 5's co-op and i think it's much better than Cod's as well. I haven't played OF: DR so I can't comment on that.

Why should looting make one co-op game better than an other? I'm pleased to hear that Borderlands allows for unique, random loots and, yes, that is a huge + for the game (and for online play). However, the teamwork that it takes to play a COMPETENT game of L4D2 should put it into the number one spot. Both L4D games insist upon teamwork for survival and punish those who try to go it alone. Some of the most tense gaming experiences I've had have been playing the L4D series. The fact taht no-mic'ers almost automatically get kicked should attest for the co-opiness of the game. YMMV.

i think that borderlands and l4d 2 1st and 2nd great choice both good games and the experience obviously more exilerating in coop, dnt know why mw2 is on the list cuz spec ops really aint that great, the only thing i like about mw 2 is online the story wasnt alll that great (veteran 4 u) and spec ops was just something to say "woop we get more than last time round" aka cod 4 re5 is a good game but gets boring after one to many playthroughs, havnt really played much of flashpoint but dusnt look as if its gunna float ma boat "lecture over"

@#79 - Hells no, ha ha! Halo Wars with two people is crowded. It's two people playing a single player game basically.

I think Borderlands sucked in co-op! Boring, poorly rendered and the looting was often disparaged by mountains of lag. COD:MW2 and Left 4 Dead 2 should definitely be above it. If not all of the other games.

Hmm. . . I found Borderlands a tad bit shoot em up but this is a co-op expirience we're talking about not story - gameplay.

On a side note, I'm glad to see someone remembered a game way back in March lol

How come a lot of people think Halo:ODST is a good co-op game? It's bad both on co-op and single player. E.g. someone needs to leave or gets disconnected; you all disconnect.
Borderlands truly deserves the number 1 spot IMO. Best co-op experience I've ever had and have not even played with a full party of 4 yet.
I have to say it is truly original and has a lot of fun factor in it.
Great List keep it up!

Spec Ops was cool but it does not take hours on hours to complete 69 stars. Maybe 4 hours max.

Too many people hate on RE5, the game is awesome. Simple as that. Better than ODST. *shakes fist at whoever said ODST > RE5*

Getting Flashpoint and L4D2 for Christmas I believe. Borderlands had to be purchased day 1 (Been waiting for it for 2 and a half years after all!) and MW2 was a given.

L4D2 was censored in my country(Australia) so there is no blood/decapitations, black people are turned white and bodies dissappear b4 they hit the ground.
So no....L4D2....does not belong on any least not in the country I live and breath in.

Think again #84. I've been working on Star 69 for a while now, down to 3 missions, and i have more time in spec ops than i did on the veteran campaign. I have about 10 hrs on it, including the time spent going back for intel, and i still have an extra hour or 2 in spec ops. It definatly takes some time.

I would have put Left 4 Dead 2 at Number 1 and Borderlands at Number 2. Borderlands co-op isn't nearly as much fun as Left 4 Dead 2's co-op is.

you say re5 was all co-op so it deserved to be above mw2 on the list, but this list is numbering the games in order of the QUALITY of the co-op game play and experience, not the amount of co-op availible.

i agree with this list for the most part. i myself am not a big fan of spec-ops. I didn't much enjoy re5 either, it strayed much to far from its predecessors. never played operation flashpoint either.

I don't agree with #3, Operation Flashpoint wasn't that good. I think RE5 should be further up on the list, otherwise I agree this this list.

Agree with #30

#59 lol icwutudidthar

MW2 shouldn't be on this list because #30 says it in a nut shell, re-hashed campaign scenarios = fail. Nothing unique.

resident evil 5 was like, resident evil 4.5. other than the co-op, which wasn't that great, it was basically a modernized version of 4. capcom is really losing me as a fan. the co-op in borderlands was EPIC!!!

Ozzie Version of L4D2, is whay too sensored, view some comparisons and you will see how lame Oz games are because of 1 politician who wont allow R-Rated games >.o
