Project Natal: The Who, What, When, Where, Why

Project Natal: The Who, What, When, Where, Why

Whether you’re looking forward to the motion based technology coming to the 360 is moot. Natal is coming and there’s nothing you can do to stop it... well nothing a sane man would do anyway. Microsoft’s famed and ambitious technology is slipping its way into stores this Christmas, and the questions on everyone’s lips are: what can we expect, what does it do and is it possible that you can baffle me with technological jargon? Our answers are quite simple? Read this article, you’ll see, and prepare to be baffled my friend... I’ve got my nerd hat strapped on and I'm raring to go.

For those of you living under a rock, Project Natal (above) aims to take the major barrier (the controller) out of gaming and open the platform up to a wider audience. The motion controlled technology uses sensors to track your body movements, gestures, facials expressions and can even be controlled by your voice. Microsoft have singled out 4 main functions of their technology:
  1. Full body play where you are the controller – With full head-to-toe motion control, Project Natal looks to utilise your movements and emulate them on screen to give you a “full-body gaming experience.”
  2. To personalise your play – Natal will not only detect who is on the console and load up your profile, but you’ll be able to use it to greet and speak to characters in games (supported by the software of course) and will not only remember your face, but also your voice.
  3. “Off-the-couch-play” – Natal is designed to get players interacting with one another with the key focus on fun. Natal is said to create “social gaming off-the-couch fun.”
  4. Easy to share fun – No headset, no controller, all you need is yourself, Natal and a couch.... as well as the obvious Xbox 360 and TV of course. You can even sit on a large rock (a bit like a gnome) or your kid brother – unfortunately, neither come bundled with the peripheral.
So that’s Microsoft’s aims, but how will it work exactly? Well Microsoft aren’t ready to announce the inner workings just yet, but they have stated that Project Natal’s sensor combines an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone and custom software to track your body movement, facial expressions and respond to your voice. My inner pessimist tells me that can't come cheap.

The main concern amongst the general populous of the Xbox 360 crowd is that this move towards motion based technology means Microsoft is casting away its core crowd to focus on the much larger casual gaming crowd. Is that what Microsoft are intending? According to the publisher, “Absolutely not.”

Microsoft were keen to point out that Natal is “meant to enhance, not replace, the experiences on Xbox 360” and they state that they will “remain more committed than ever to delivering high-quality core game experiences that consistently exceed expectations.” To prove their commitment to the core crowd, Microsoft continued to cite their exclusive titles that will be available this year. Despite that sentiment being abundantly clear and straight to the point, they’re keen to stress that it’s not a step towards the casual market and state that their “massive line-up of blockbuster games will continue to use the traditional controller.”

Is that clear enough for you? Apparently Microsoft didn’t think so and they continue to drill this point home.

Natal isn't replacing the 360 controller.
“We envision “Project Natal” as a complement, not a replacement for the traditional control system. We can certainly imagine ways that “Project Natal” could enhance more conventional gaming experiences. Imagine scoring a winning soccer goal with your own foot, dribbling full-court in your living room, painting a picture with your index finger, or fast forward a movie with a single word. “Project Natal” has the potential to deliver more immersive gaming and entertainment experiences than the traditional controller can by itself.” So don't expect the Xbox 360 controller to suddenly become extinct over night, it's clear Microsoft still recognises the core crowd as an important part of the overall package.

The answer to whether Project Natal would extend the lifecycle of the Xbox 360, Microsoft responded with an adamant “yes.” Furthermore, Microsoft stated that they’re “not even halfway through the Xbox 360 lifecycle” which surprises even me considering that the Xbox 360 recently turned 4, suggesting a lifecycle of 9 or so years.
Project Natal is their vision for “fully immersive and interactive home entertainment that will capture your body, voice and imagination - transforming social gaming and entertainment forever.” It sounds a little too much like over-zealous PR talk for my liking, but the possibilities of Natal are pretty vast as we await its arrival.

Whilst Microsoft aren’t ready to announce which games will utilize the technology – despite Molyneux saying Fable 3 would utilize it last year – they were keen to point out that “Activision Blizzard, Capcom, Disney Interactive, Electronic Arts, Konami, Namco Bandai, Sega, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive Software, THQ Inc, and Ubisoft” are all actively working on games.

Health warning: Natal can make you prance around like an idiot.
So will Natal work with every Xbox 360? Simple answer, yes. The cost and precise release date currently remain a mystery and all we know is the new Microsoft technology is slated for a holiday release this year. On the whole it seems that Microsoft are keen to push the notion that Natal is there to “compliment” and not replace the traditional controller, whilst also keen to reemphasise their position in terms of growing the core market; a market they fully intend to keep catering for. The beauty with Natal is that it’s not a mandatory purchase. If it takes your fancy, then you can buy it. If not, then stick to your core games and your controller. What will make or break Natal though is not the impressive technology or not even how Microsoft promote it; it’s the software that they create for it.

Despite having attended the two major trade shows last year, Project Natal has eluded us and so we can’t comment on how accurate or impressive it will be. However with the peripheral launching this year, it can’t elude us much longer. Whether the tech works or not is an entirely different question, at current time our only concern – despite the software – is how Microsoft intends to deliver core games that will use the technology, like Fable 3. Will they make Natal a requirement to play the game or are they quite content to not literally force it down your throat and make it totally optional. After all Fable isn’t exactly a casual title – it’s an RPG – and despite what Microsoft say here,  actions speak louder than words and this game will set the tone for how much of an impact Natal will have on the core games market.
Project Natal is coming holiday 2010. We're hedging our bets on Fable 3 being a launch title. Bundle anyone?

I'll pass. I had my "fun" with motion sensing on the Wii and that lasted about one day. Now no one in my house plays the Wii, we all just use the PS2 and 360.

I'm still on teh fence about this....the video they showed at E3 was pretty impressive to say the least...but im still not sold....the price point will be a BIG factor for many people i think...and that technology certainly doesnt sound cheap.

I hope this doesn't start a series of game that require this thing..Seems a bit unnecessary considering if people wanted this most of them already would have the Wii. I know it's different between using a controller compared to your whole body but the principle is the same imo.

Not much am i looking forward to this. theres no doubt that it'll be fun..but im not sure how long that fun can last. i imagine it'll be way to pricey for my taste, and to be honest i'd much rather stick to the controller.

Ha ha, well for many players who like to play games to relax, this isn't going to work out for them will it? I mean, if I'm exhausted working standing on my feet for hours, last thing I need is playing game moving around in my room.

Guess this can be good and bad depending on the situation, right?

No offense Webb, but you put two and two together to often. Whilst it might be a launch title, that doesn't nessecarily mean a bundle, as I can't see Natal being under 100$, and I can't see Fable III being that either, so whose going to want to pay 200$ or more, for a bundle, when they could nearly go buy a console dedicated to motion control/usage for nearly the same amount.

Then again, people pay $100+ for GH and DJ Hero.

If the games are fun and utilize the camera well, then I am all for it. That said I don't want to jump around like an idiot.

However, it is just a bunch of mini games and shovel ware, then I will pass. I sold my Wii after finishing Super Mario Galaxy and never looked back.

Price is also a factor. MS likes to gouge on their proprietary peripherals. I cant see this being under $150. Surprise me MS.

The software will definitely make or break Natal.

@#9 - Wait, I put 2 + 2 together too often, yet you're saying I might have it wrong? Wouldn't I be putting 1,643,753,086 and 9,997,368,583 together and getting 4 then? =P

I'll wager your user title on it. I win, I get to change it to whatever I want for a month. You win, and I'll let you change mine to whatever you want (within reason =P) for a month.

I remember ready something a while ago that it was gonna cost $150 USD, hang on, i think that was on this site. I might be wrong but if it is $150 USD thats nearly $300 over here in Australia. I will buy that if it does all the things it says, and so far it looks like it!

I agree with number #18. Great tech, but this is just helping the path of people never leaving their homes. To me games is for stuff I can't do in real life, such as slaying a dragon or jumping 500 feet and landing without a scratch.

The sports genre is growing stale every year and this is just going to make it ridiculous, because you know EA is going to milk Natal to death with Madden and others. It might be fun in Fable III and such, but I still think it's a step in the wrong direction, when it comes getting out and actually doing things.

While interesting it may be, if Fable 3 is RUMORED to be the only title on the compatibility list; I think I'll pass.

tbh it depends on what the games are for this because it just an add on like the vision camera, and fable 3 isnt really gonna have it unless its got a christmas release, because whats the point in releasing a natal compatible game (well parts) and then having to wait a couple of months to get it.

I'll give it a chance before I go ahead and talk shit about it. It has potential, but with the Wii increasing their share of the console market with its "Family friendly" games, and the motion sensing, its hard not to think that Microsoft is releasing something to take back their share of what the Wii took from them.

I have a question, which I doubt will get looked at being #35.

How is Natal ment to be placed in the average gamers setup?
Most people play on an LCD/Plasma, being roughly 3" thick. So is this "Natal" thing ment to be placed ontop of the TV? Just looking at my Samsung compared to the pic above I wouldn't have a clue where i would place this thing in my room. Sure, I could move my 360 out with my home theater and place it on an entertainment unit with the TV, but that

This could see the 360 finally sell serious numbers in Japan. It's new and different and to some degree it suits small/built-up places where there isn't room to swing a cat. Should do really well in Japan provided the key software titles are there.

Personally I'm hoping for a return of the Rabbids!

Like above i worry about where it will be placed and mainly how it's going to be powered! I have my usb ports on the front for controllers, wireless adapter uses the back, hdmi cable and audio port for surround sound used up, is it going to work as a standalone thing?

Not to mention the price!

I think it's ridiculous when people say "I don't like the Wii, I'm not getting this." Does anyone ever say "I don't like Playstation, I'm not getting Xbox"? Just because it's similar technology doesn't mean it functions the same or plays out in the same way. It's almost a guarantee the motion control games for Xbox will be almost ALL be 100x better than the games for Wii because the Wii has just been a gimmick console almost since it came out, with most of its games being rushed thru development to try to make a quick buck on the technology alone.

nothing to see here folks. Microsoft playing catch-up with the Nintendo by offering Wii V.2.5, they have there eyes on the Wii massive sales, they figured out people, buy new stuff, with smart marketing, and good pricing you can make many many people buy new "Exciting" stuff like Natal, how many people actually play the WII? very few. and how many Wiis collecting dust? A lot. The point is: for hardcore gamers i don't see Natal adding anything to the mix.

Motion Sensing is fun when it works and makes sense; Metroid Prime 3 being the best and really only example. If developers learn from the Wii and don't put games out with motion sensing just to make some dough then this should work. But I will wait and see before I say this is good or bad.

#41-Very good point you made there, it shouldn't be constantly compared to the Wii. The technology may be similar, but that's the direction the industry is going in. Of course companies are going to use similar technology to get the leg up on their competitors, that's just how it is. This is similar to when game companies started making CD-based consoles instead of the ones that used cartridges. And if it ever happens in the future, I'm sure we will be seeing Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony virtual reality consoles :P

@59 So the body floating in mid air glitch for Assassin's Creed 1 summed up your expectations of that game too. That was over a year ago they most likely fixed that glitch by now. Plus you got to admit that was funny.

I'm not really looking forward to this either. I'm not knocking on the tech or anything but this is an obvious attempt to cater to more casual fans like Wii gamers. I'm not worried that they're going to start catering to more casual fans overall as there are too many M titles out there for the 360, but I just can't see it being too successful if the price is too high.

the reason i've stuck with the 360 since launch is that it's a gamer's console first. the nintendo wagglestick is that "new and cool thing" that the mainstream market just had to have. who actually plays the damn thing? my sister got one when her gamecube died and she can't stand the wagglestick. for her it's a $200 gamecube emulator and she avoids wagglestick games as much as possible. the ps3 tries too hard to be a blu-ray player and forgets it's a GAME CONSOLE. it didn't start getting good exclusives until the last few months whilst the 360 already has an army of exclusives. the point i'm trying to make here is that mircosoft is fighting a losing fight. casuals already bought their wii, regardless of whether they play it or not. sony is in 3rd because they built a $300 blu-ray player that plays video games. that's exactly how they market it. people who want a blu-ray player will go buy an actual blu-ray player for half the price. the success of this thing falls on the software developed for it. the sucess of the 360 depends on whether microsoft stays true to their word and doesn't forget US.

At 25 first off the PS2 had no power' and the eye toy was just a reg cam, natal is way pastthe eye toys technology also Microsoft is a software giant and if I know someone that can make extremly powerful software it's them.
Also there are videos on showing people playing it and more. Natal has it's on page on the website so go check it out

"Imagine scoring a winning soccer goal with your own foot"
I can do that without your fancy technology its called gathering friends and going to the nearest park with a football.

I for one am not looking forward to this. I am over the motion sensor hype. I have a Wii that never gets used because when i want to play video games i just wanna sit down and chillout.

Also not all of us have gigantic spaces to use Project Natal. I am fairly annoyed that they took all this time to copy the Wii. Why not just come up with a brand new idea that will take the 360 onto another level?

But I will give it a chance as i refuse to downgrade to a PS3 :P

I still don't understand how a controller is such a "major barrier" for so many people. What kind of jobs are these people holding if they can't read the manual for a few seconds, figure out what does what then proceed to play.

Anyway, hope this thing bombs hard. I have almost no doubt that Fable III will have a Natal based achievement.

my biggest problem with this is there isn't any direct feedback from like a controller or anything. If I'm gonna pretend to be dribbling in basketball or something I want it to feel like I'm dribbling a basketball. If all I'm doing is moving my hand up and down then that's something you should do in private lol.

@#72- "casuals already bought their wii" i hope you understand that new people are introduced to the world of gaming everyday, whether they become a hardcore gamer or a casual one, it doesn't matter. it's not like there aren't new people to market this interesting new product to. the people who play games right now aren't the only people who will do it, we still have years and even generations of new players. it's not like people are going to stop being born and growing up to be able to decide whether they play games regularly or casually, or whatever else they choose.

besides people, stop hoping for failure. it's not like microsoft is giving up the standard controller and "hardcore games." you'll have your fix. the industry is growing, and this is what happens, fresh ideas are introduced. if it's not for you, don't bash it, and don't lump it into the same category as other gaming hardware. natal is its own idea, at least let it show its full capabilities before we begin to turn our heads in disgust.

id have to agree with 100 dont bash and and dont hope it will fail, like the main post says its all gonna be about how well it works and kinds of games that come out. Wii was defintly an awesome idea but no games ever really came out and not having solid visuals just sucks in this day and age,and finally even with the motion capture your still limited with what u can actually do by the fact theres a controller. With this project natal the possibilities are truly endless if you think about it lets just hope they have it all figured out.

Well the price will really affect my decision to buy it or not. I know some people a crazy enough to pay $250 for Beatles Rock Band or even $150 for Modern Warfare 2 with night vision goggles but I don't think I'm going to go that far. Even the Natal games are probably going to be more expansive so you know.

I agree with #104. This is not a Wii ripoff. Look at the differences between the wii. Avatars are better looking on the 360. The games look better on the 360. If Natal becomes as good as they say it is, I will buy this in a heartbeat. I would rather move around playing a video game than shake my arm off till it gets numb like the wii does now and what the ps3 version of motion controller will do as well. It would be good for them to get in the "casual" games, especially for people who have families so they everyone can play the 360.

Well I'm new here and I think this could be good or bad. My two concerns are; how will room lightining effect it. For example, the wii works under all conditions.

2) The price of the unit, well good games for it will help the price is what I think will drive people away.

So if MS has a reasonable price and games for it, I would consider buying it. I enjoy playing the wii, so this would be a great step forward for the 360.

I also hope it will be BC as alot of games I like are xbox ones too. Imagine the outlaw series or shenmue2 and whacked on this, great stuff!

I know I will get this but I hope it doesn't phase out the standard controller. Its hard for me to believe companies now after what Nintendo did to the Game Boy Advance and now with the lack of good games on the Wii.

This is a good idea for some people and bad idea for others. It's good for the people who are too lazy to go play outside or who don't have any friends and who have a lot of space where their xbox 360 is located. It's a bad idea for people who like playing outside then relaxing and playing video games they way they were meant to be played(on a couch/bed). I think I speak for more than 50% of the Xbox Fanbase when I say: "If you wanna play sports and be active, GO OUTSIDE FOR PEAK SAKE!!!!

who wants to bet that they will do the same thing as they did on the wii???:

i bet that they are going to bombard us with tons of exercise games for "natal" just like they've been doing with the Wii right now. i can easily see that happening, i would even bet that EA are in development for a "natal" exercise game as i speak (type, you know what i mean).

it'll be neat to see it full-board, but so far, its meh, not a big deal at all, i plike my controller gaming right now, sit back with a snack and a glass of coke and just chill.

lol, project wiital, thats pretty much it: first avatars, now the motion sensing/body capture (basically one step up on the wii, but based on the wii concept still)

and yes, they better not have natal specific achieves, and they better start bundling it WITH the consoles too, along with the wi-fi adapter, i mean, are they really that far behind? to not even HAVE built in wi-fi?

they better listen to the people if they want to do whats best for us, since it is us they are catering too, is it not?

anyways, it looks like the camera is wired too. thats bad, more cables to fuss with and have hanging around all over the place.

i hope it is wireless, at this point in technology, wireless should be a given.

and i would assume that the camera is usb??? if so, where do i plug it in if i have a wi-fi adapter already on the back?

Why is it the only thing people focus on with this is the motion controlling bit?

Does the prospect of higher interaction with characters in games not excite people? I think it's both a thrilling and terrifying prospect.

The motion control skit is a distant after thought as far as I'm concerned, its what the technology can do for playing RPG's or other character heavy games that will really sell me on this.

Project Natal will sell a ton because people buy everything microsoft sticks their name on. I bet there will be an epic rate of them breaking.

I hope this turns out well. It'll depend completely on how many quality games are made for it. I have a Wii, PS3 and 360 and of the three the 360 is my favorite. It has a steady stream of great games. On the other end of the spectrum is the Wii for which there is a dearth of total crap games. If the games that use Natal are gimmicky and cheap then you'll be able to find Natal hardware on the shelf next to the HD-DVD drives. I'm hoping it pans out for them (and us as well.)

Oh, and I hope they learn a lesson from the Nintendo DSi. We have one of those and good luck finding a game that uses any of its features. Seems like game makers don't want to limit their game sales to the small percentage of people who have a DSi over the DS.

I think it would be pretty cool if you could buy the err... motion capture suit with it, but then again the cost would rise to unevitable heights. NA!' I think I'll stick to my 360 controller.

I'm holding back my full judgment until I can see what it can do at launch. I'm one of the four people that really had fun with "You're in the Movies" and uploaded the movies to share them on the internet with people. People are too self conscious and prudish to look stupid and have fun these days, it seems. It's kind of depressing. Hell, some of you guys are seven times the geek I am and I don't have any problem looking stupid while having fun. Or drinking, for that matter. Although, I'd probably use Natal just for navigating my Xbox without pressing ten buttons to get my music playing, or to not have to grab a controller to play Netflix.

My only problem is the statement: "...Project Natal (above) aims to take the major barrier (the controller) out of gaming and open the platform up to a wider audience."

I still don't understand how this would open up to a wider audience? I mean Nintendo tried doing this with the whole console, and while it sold more systems at the beginning, it can no longer keep up with Sony/Microsoft, at least that's the way I see it. My view is that we have grown so accustomed to the controller; in terms of the belief "if it's not real, why should we have to do it?"

But I'll be honest, I think I'll be giving it a shot at the least. It all depends on the price though, and whether or not Natal fairs better than my country's economy. : P

Hopefully it will get used in ways far away from just the Wii concept. I was love to see interactivity in games such as a future Mass Effect/Halo etc titles, where we remain using what we are use to, i.e the controller, and implement Natal in a kind of "Minority Report finding the potential killers" menu. If you've seen the film you'll get the idea from watching Tom Cruise at work.
I want Natal to add interactivity into the game. Let it know i am typing functions on my left wrist using my right hand like some Predator like device. Expand on the premise and create a more virtual way of playing, not just copy the Wii and kick footballs or pretend to cook, for that doesn't interest me. I have a Wii, and its only function for the last year has been the Weather/News channel.

I wouldn't be surprised if they would release a system update with the hardware and then release games only for that system version (You need the natal even if you play them with a controller).
The price of the project natal will be at least as much as a console would be, so they don't even have to think about a new generation console for at least 4 more years if they can force you to buy it.
This would just be soooo Microsoft.

so its an eye toy? i thought the 360 already had a vision peripheral. a lot of use the live camera went to.

as for fable 3, i stopped caring when not even 7 months had passed [since the second one] and they announced it, when it could have easily been an expansion.

and if Natal is over $50 (which it will) i won't even think of buying it.

between Avatars, 1 vs 100, avatar marketplace, facebook, twitter, indie games, and the radio crap, i'm getting sick of microsoft's attempts on "making the system better". why fix it if it isn't broken?

This would be bloody awesome if combined with a fighting game, anyone agree? Or perhaps being used for balance, jumping, ducking etc ingame. outside that i really dont see much use.

I am not really sure on the whole Project Natal thing, I mean if you take good games like Halo, Gears of War, Left 4 Dead, Modern Warfare, etc. and try to convert it over I just don't see this really working out, not to mention it kind of ruins the whole aspect of using a controller. I personally could care less about Project Natal. I bought a Nintendo Wii and got rid of after a week; I can only imagine the plethora of stupid games that are going to be made for this, Heh.

It looks like fun, but the big problem is, is the price worth the product. I'm not cheapskate, but if it is way overpriced I'm gonna let this piece of technology pass my by...

It worries me when they say "core games" if they're gonna try and steal some of the wii market they could at least do it by making purpose built games rather than taking titles we know and love and making them well and truely shit. I dont know about you but i dont want to have to wave my arm around like a sword while playing fable3. If thats the kind of thing you're into go dress up and do it in a forest with some other roleplaying wierdos!

wiimote = 3D body mapping? wow really people, this nothing like the WII. I still use my WII but every game I own is pretty much motion free (except mario kart and paper mario where you shake the control for stylishness and xp bonuses), majority of the Wii's games are gimicky crap. I actually hate nintendo now though after their statment where they called the gamers 'antisocial basement dwellers' (irony of using my wii to post)

blows the wii away its not just swinging your arm around and to activate a preset action, this is entirely dif. all they have to do is work on the graphics and sway from this 64 bit animation.
