Kinecting The Dots - Impressions From The E3 Kinect Unveiling

Kinecting The Dots - Impressions From The E3 Kinect Unveiling

From a Microsoft perspective, it must be pretty demoralising to see this evening’s events spoiled by an advertising mishap. Another advertising mishap may I add - Gears of War 3 anyone? A leak that pretty much let every cat out of the bag ahead of this evening’s event.

Scenes outside the Galen Center this evening.

Regardless, Microsoft and their Project Natal event this evening, imagined by those limber and energetic Cirque Du Soleil folks, was a fine spectacle. From a gaming perspective though, it was nothing more than that. A highly charged and superb piece of choreography, but with no substance to indicate that the upcoming piece of hardware really is enough to change the face of gaming as we know it. After the leak from this afternoon, there is nothing new really to report other than a few specifics on what we saw. In fact, we can’t even comment on how it’s shaping up on the technology front as it was all a fantastically scripted series of events, rather than a live showcase of the new hardware.

So yes, Natal is now called Kinect and truth be told, we much preferred Natal, and yes, Joyride is now a Kinect title - as are pretty much all of the games that were mentioned in this afternoon’s post which all made a cameo appearance.

After some insane gymnastics from the Cirque Du Soleil folk on the show floor - which was filled with hundreds of industry folk (us included) - and such things like a huge elephant carrying in a small boy, the show got underway with more hyperbole than the front page of your everyday tabloid. The Kinect  aspect took a while to rear its head and they kicked things off with the formally leaked, Kinect Adventures. Not only did they show off the game’s river raft mini-game where the player steers down the river trying to grab as many letter bubbles as possible, but also gave us a brief look at the on rails mini-game that has you moving your body and changing your shape to collect as many of the pick ups as possible along the way.

Even elephants were invited...

Next on show was Microsoft’s much anticipated and now reimagined Joy Ride. Controlled similarly to the Burnout Paradise Natal demonstration at last year’s E3, the on-screen characters leaned into corners to drift around them and whilst in the air on big jumps, leaned forwards, backwards or to one side to pull off some insane stunts. It looked very cool in its own right, but to be quite frank, other than bundling it with Kinect, I find it hard to see how it’s going to shift many copies at all as it seems to be quite shallow on the face of it.

A good segment of the event was centred around Kinect’s Wii Sports wannabe title, Kinect Sports. In a girls vs. boys face-off, we got a brief look at the game’s hurdles event, javelin throw and the sprint event of the track and field discipline, as well as volley ball, ten-pin bowling and “soccer” - which looked particularly horrid and clunky. It’s definitely not aimed at the most seasoned gamers, although with Xbox Live multiplayer being an integral part of Microsoft’s system, it may offer something a little more than Nintendo’s counterpart in that respect.

Not mentioned earlier on and possibly not one of the tech’s strongest selling points, but we also got to see the video chat in action briefly, as well as the ability to share photos and view them with a friend using the technology as an interface. That includes navigating the dashboard as well, which looks equally as cool as it did last year.

There was also a brief look at their Tai Chi/Yoga title, Kinectimals - which basically consists of stroking an animal... seriously - and their Just Dance rip-off, Dance Central. All of which kind of indicate the general direction of Natal’s software and as expected, there really doesn’t seem much for Microsoft’s core audience as it stands. Kinetic is quite clearly about expanding Microsoft's audience, whether that will mean more investment there and less investment in their core market though remains to be seen.

This. Is. Kinect.

As a core gamer per se, the only title that really managed to catch my attention was the collaboration between Disney and LucasArts. The unnamed Star Wars title saw our on screen character using his body movement to flail his lightsaber to deflect incoming laser beams, before swinging his arms to use the force to wipe out a crew of approaching Stormtroopers. Unfortunately, the brief look was as it sounds, brief, and after our character had wiped out a few waves of Stormtroopers and slid forward using the Force, the scene ended as our plucky little character entered into a lightsaber duel with none other than Darth Vader himself.

The most disappointing aspect from the whole presentation was not the terrible name, but the fact that having gone in expecting some sort of price and release date announcement, we left with nothing. Sure, we got a quick glance at a few games, most of which will appeal to young children and technologically savvy families, but for those who are in it - and have always been in it - for the games, you may be disappointed and admittedly, we left with a bitter taste in our mouths. This year’s E3 is hugely important for Kinect and it simply must leave a positive impact on the audience if it's going to be a success, truth be told though, it hasn’t got off to the brightest of starts. Expect a price and release date tomorrow at the Microsoft press briefing, but for now, core gamers shouldn't really expect too much from the product based upon this first batch of games.

Kinect.. nice name. I think I'd like to try it. Probably won't get it on release date but I'd get it further down the track. Also, xbox 360 slim is pretty much confirmed aye?

Microsoft is probably going to come out and say "Project Natal was the operation to invent Kinect" and stand by the new name but it still doesn't change the fact that it's going to suck, be loaded with shovelware, and cost too much. I can see the hidden managers from MS trying to drum up interest by saying "THAT IS SO AWESOME" about Kinect Sports but, let's face it: if you're interested in "Kinect Anything," buy a Wii.

I actually thought Natal could be revolutionary, but after reading this article and seeing what games will support Kinect, I doubt it will be anything near revolutionary.

Luckily there are some great games to be shown @E3 to make up for it! :)

While I'm not totally thrilled about it either, the tech has to start somewhere. Anybody expecting some massive core title to adopt the new hardware instantly was setting themselves up for disapointment.

I agree the new name really sucks but Im still excited about Kinect.@6 Natal is revolutionary You all cant expect some new technology to come out with guns a blazing. It will probably be couple of years before game developers figure out what natals fully capable of.Game developers have to come up with all new programing for games to work perfect with natal.Everything take time to perfect. The whole kinect thing blows away anything the wii has to offer. I think the biggest disappointment would have to be the PS3 move controller. Go take a look at PS3 move and Kinect and tell me which one blows

While Kinect has the virtue of not requiring any hand held controller, I can only see it being used in party games. The average core gamer, isn't going to look at Kinect to replace the tried, tested and less knackering control pad any time soon, imo.

Also hopefully MS won't reduce investment into the core gamer side because of this venture into the Wii side of the market.

Was anyone really surprised that the Kinect is launching as a We-want-some-of-Nintendo's-market-share gimmick?

I have no confidence in the product AS IT STANDS but I'm also aware that it took more than six months for the Wii to come out with anything that made me take a step back and actually think of the console as 'worth my time'.

If this doesn't fail miserably and disappear due to lack of consumer interest, I look forward to seeing what is actually done with the tech but at the moment? There's absolutely no reason for me personally to buy in to it.

to everyone complaining about the "games" that they showed , how many of them may have been tech demos?

I mean this was exactly the same last year. as soon as it was shown off "oh its like the wii. the wii has shit games. this will have shit games". all before any of you have even had the chance to try it out. Stop being so ignorant about it. If you prefer your controller then stick to that its not taking over the controller you know.

In summary. Stop fucking complaining about something you havnt tried yet.

I don't really understand all the negativity. Sure, the line up is dissapointing, but the launch line up for the 360 itself was pretty week.

The way I look at it, at the least it gives you the option to play Wii-style games on your 360. Wii-only owners can't play 360-style games on their system.

I may be the only person who thought the technology may be better than I expected. Of course I expected a steaming pile of dog poop copy of a Wii remote much like Sony Move. I could see potential for REAL games. I could see this as the very first piece of tech that leads to a Star Trek Holodeck type game system many years(decades at least) down the road.

It completely depends on the price of it for me. If it is a reasonable price and is included in some actual retail games not arcade games then I may give it a go. Or it may be just like the wii, I bought that thinking how awesome it was going to be and what was it? Thats right SHIT.

I hope this bombs big time. If it does - we can all focus on proper games as it should be. It's obvious that Microsofts focus is all on this POS, which makes me fear that gaming as we know it could be on the way out in the future, especially with Sony also going down this road too.

Lets face it, there isn't many games on the 360 a young child would like. Kinect is a great idea, just wait untill games like rainbow 6 utilise its features. Games will become even more interactive and immersive in the next few years. Its not going to be like the wii where every game almost forces you to use crappy motion controls. The 360 is all about options, a home entertainment system

I like the idea of it but for games like final fantasy and the sort can you really see yourself pointing at the buttons in the menues on the screen and getting pissed off when it presses the wrong one, something like this defenantly goes a long with a controller, you pretty much can not go without one, this is just an extra feature to increase the way we play games.
I also see this leading to games becoming more VR and interective, technology requires first steps, even tho this is fairly basic and pretty much seems like a gimmick piece of equipment to me I can see it evolving into something more in the future.
With that said I would probably not buy one as the games I enjoy playing are not suited to motion controls but there are people that will be interested in playing games using this and given the chance can and probably will evolve the way in which we play games.

Also to all of you complaining about people hating it without trying: I do believe that this is a forum in which people voice thier individual oppinions of which we are all entitled too and with more oppinions and information for and against other people who are unsure can see what other people think, I do hate when people on put 3 words in a post like "I hate this", etc, but once again they are entitled to thier oppinions. Sorry about the wall of text.

Meh. Build it into the next gen Xbox to ENHANCE game control rather than replace traditional hand controllers and then I'll give a shit.

Don't give me some lame peripheral with equally lame games. SEGA burned me on that way back in the day with the 32X.

Watching Natal in action gave me flashbacks to Sony's terrible E3 presentation with the SIXAXIS all those years ago. Seems Karma really is a bitch, since now they're laughing it up at our expense.

Vision Cam: RIP
HD-DVD: RIP
Kinect: Terminally ill

How about instead of pussyfooting around it with this Natal crap, they just make cerebral video implants already.

And why do we have to choose if they Move of Kinect is better? How about they're equally as shit? You do know the one only exists because the other does, right?

Sony stands to lose a ton of casual players who will be inevitably let down by Natal, so it's only natural they come out with their own glorified camera. Actually the backswing to people who liked Kinect's premise but realizing it simply won't have the company's full support may cause a surge in Wii purchases.

To Be honest i think they did a good job on it an the name has a nice ring to it.... And i have to say ITS NOT TRYING TO BE A WII..... a WII using a senor IR bar and CONTROLS... Kinect using NOTHING but a camera.. and the fact that it will work with ANY xbox not just the new smaller xbox 360... But i think they did a good move with Kinect and The New XBOX 360 looks sweet and 299 price tag is even nicer with the face of built in WIFI and Optical input and 250 gig HD is nice.

For everyone that has doubts about it being stupid and all that. You are right to voice your own opinions as we all do here. I knew for a fact that there were not going to be any deeply developed games at launch, there never are for any type of new innovation. But i promise you this, within the next year or so that is will hit Core gamers in the chest with possibly more innovations as add-ons. for instance, they can create peripheral that we can hold similar to the move but it is scanned into the action. i know it sounds confusing, but i can almost guarantee that it will get core gamers sooner than later

MS is working at turning the 360 into the media hub of everyone's home. We get Facebook, Twitter, last.fm, Zune, Netflix and now ESPN (live and on demand). Kinect is the next step forward: Skype without a computer, a workout without a "balance board", DDR (Dance Central) without the ridiculous pads.

This is a major step forward in technology, especially for consumer use. Years ago, we were all saying, "wouldn't it be amazing to have a system that could recognize me and my voice". I remember thinking it. And now we have it and all people are talking about are the games for it and how disappointing it looks. Honestly, did anyone with half a brain think we'd be playing the next CoD without a controller?

This could completely change the way all of us interact with media in our home and no one sees it. Fast forward a movie with a gesture of your hand, pause a video with a voice command, sign in just by waving. It'll interact with us as much as we will with it.

And while everyone else is funneling their vision down to games and other minor aspects, MS has decided to reverse funnel, for lack of a better description. They want to broaden what people do with their 360's. I for one want to use mine for a lot more than just games and now I can. After Kinect comes out, I'll be able to use it for just about anything I want. All we need now is an internet browser.

@69 I agree completely.

People keep comparing this to the wii. Probably most people who compare it have barely played it if at all. I have a wii and yes kinect is similar but I love the idea of not having a controller to play. The wii doesn't pick up everything perfectly. It's a pain to have to connect and unconnect the nunchuck because one game calls for it but the next doesn't.
Kinect is changing the way video games are. It's setting history for video games. I just wish ppl would give it a chance and stop saying oh the games aren't worth nothing. Give it time as with any new technology. It won't replace the controller, but it can expand the way we play some games.

I think a lot of people who potentially may of had a very positive perception of kinetic have been turned off by all the hype and media coverage. Or maybe I'm one of the few who's always turned off by glorified technology which really brings nothing new or groundbreaking.

the only reason why I would buy the new xbox is cause I only have 20 gigs on my HDD. Is that a reason to buy it? I don't want Kinect.

Project Natal > Kinect
Nintendo did the same
Revolution > Wii

Wii La Revolution! (lol?)

And yeah, I really hate people who make judgements about things they have not played or tried like saying "It's not meant to be that good" (I heard someone say that about Knights of the old republic 2 - it got GOTY 2005 *faceplam*)

So Kinect here I come!

Most of you are going buy what someone else is saying. Yeah it has Wii type titles but come on the god damn thing isn't even out yet. You have to give these things time to get awesome games. Wait until E3 next year to cast judgement.

Why cant they just let us play good games with a regular controller? I was never interested in this, and now I am convinced that, if I were to buy this, it would end up sitting on the shelf in my closet next to my hd-dvd drive. Definitely will never buy this. If the next xbox requires this or something like it, I will most definitely not be buying that either.

I've tried the Wii n can't stand it. Motion controls simply lack the precision gaming requires. I don't see motion controls moving past party game niche anytime soon.

If its as responsive as it seems It's worth a buy, plus the control-less dashboard navigation and voice command inclusion mean I won't get overly frustrated during late night drunken movie watching sessions. Besides should be a blow to the wii, it's about time.

You guys r freaking retarded! The kinect is not replacing the controller and it is not turning the xbox into a wii. All it is is to get people who r scared of gaming and r littler play games on the xbox. But it makes the xbox not just for core gamers but for families and children also. Xbox is not going to abandon core gamers it will focus on both always finding ways to advance both types. so this takes a blow to the wii and ps3. And you never know they might start making gmaes for kinect that r for more hard core gamers. and the voice and picture recognition is way cool as is the dashboard intergration. So to all u retards out there that say this isnt cool or not a good product is lying to be cool or they dont know wat the hell they r talking about becuase this is advanced technology and it is in its beginning stages. so lay of retards. AMEN

@spencer55
i take it you are a casual gamer??
you sound like one, casuals like you make me sick and you bring down the gaming industry because devs have to dumb games down for imbeciles such as yourself.
i bet when you get your precious little wii, oops i mean kinect, you will slide it long ways in and out of your arsehole and then sniff the device so you can smell your casual shit.
casual fag.

this piece of equipment is a MASSIVE advancement in home entertainment and i persoanlly can not wait to get my hands on my preordered one!!!

all the ppl who cant see the future potential of something like this are stuck in the 80's

if you dont like the idea of it then
1. dont buy it
2. stop moaning

also, @86 ... its you so called "hardcore gamers" that give us normal ppl that play games such a bad rep. leave your house once in a while and experience the real world, socialise with people and friends, and learn to deal with ppl who cant play games 24/7 or arent that good at games ... you wouldnt rip into someone in a wheelchair because they cant walk and you can so lay off ppl who cant play games that well just because you can

seriously looks good i really would like to get it in full honesty people have a right to their opinions and they can say its crappy piece of hardware but its actually changing in a way. yh some people don't wanna stand and move around to play a game but others do, so you can't completely call it useless pile of crap, if yh wanna see sometihng thts a total rip-off of wii look at sony's move its a complete wii remote rip-off. So if yh are interested in it and are a core gamer get it some people will say yo are stupid others will probably support yh but dnt always let people put yh down about it. try it if you're gonna, dnt if your not, no one will care either way.
@21 and thnk you for giving everyone a strong lecture you made very strong argument and point thnk you.
