5 Things You Should Know About Call of Duty: Black Ops II Multiplayer

Another year and another obligatory Call of Duty sequel is readying up to hits the shelves this November. But where past instalments have largely been content to adopt the 'if ain't broke, don't fix it' mantra, Treyarch's latest stab at the franchise – and the studio's first direct sequel – is having a go at shaking things up a bit.

There might not be particularly sweeping or game-changing innovations in Black Ops II, but there's enough new stuff coming to make us genuinely sit up and take notice for once. So popular and established is Call of Duty's multiplayer that making any kind of change presents something of a risk, but Treyarch is having a go anyway.

We covered a lot of ground in our Gamescom preview, but we thought we'd go into some additional detail to make sure you're down with the kids. Or something like that. So without further ado, here are five things you should know about Call of Duty: Black Ops II multiplayer.

1. It's Got a Funky New 'Pick 10' Create A Class System – On paper, it might not sound like a particularly significant change, but presenting you with a grid comprised of ten spaces for your own bespoke loadouts is actually a clear and concise way of creating your own classes. If you're lazy, there's still the preset sniper, heavy, assault and recon classes et al, but building your own loadout is a snap. Everything is laid out in a pleasing illustrated style and constructed in such a way that you're always propelled forward through the menus, rather than having to fiddle with greyed-out options or forced to backtrack.

There are dozens of primary weapons, secondary weapons, tactical gadgets, lethal gadgets, perks and attachments to choose from, with Wildcards thrown in to mix things up a bit and three slots for you to assign them to. Choose a 'Greed' Wildcard and you can select an extra perk, while other Wildcards give you an extra weapon attachment or an extra lethal or tactical gadget. 'Pick 10' suggests that there are limits imposed on Create A Class, but the reality is a wealth of options and possible combinations to experiment with as you strive to assemble that elusive perfect loadout. It's a relatively minor new feature, but just one example of Black Ops II pushing the boat out just a little bit.

You can still only take two guns of course, but you can take only a primary weapon if you'd prefer. There's loads of scope for honing your ideal combo of weapons and items. There's 100 items to unlock too, with a new one to choose from with each of the 55 levels you achieve, meaning you'll be wanting to Prestige over and over to get everything. You'll find ten levels of Prestige to boot. Phew.

2. Kill Streaks Are Dead. Long Live Score Streaks!  – Traditionally in Call of Duty to reap the benefits of helpful support items like care packages, helicopter gunships, the AC-40 or whatever, you'd have to be some sort of online first-person shooter demigod (or a big fat cheater), but in Black Ops II Kill Streaks are out and Score Streaks are in. What does that mean? It means that it's more 'come one, come all' rather than, 'here comes the fella with the biggest gun and the best perks shooting everyone in the face'. You're rewarded for a variety of actions rather than merely killing the opposition, so having the best K/D ratio isn't necessarily a surefire route to accessing all of the best shit.

Score Streaks mean that you get points for capturing a flag, taking over a hardpoint (in the king of the hill-esque HardPoint mode), fulfilling support roles, setting up a sabotage with a Shock Charge or completing any objective for that matter. It's a nice way of embracing players of all skill levels, and with a new matchmaking system that pits you against players of a similar skill, based on placing in matches, wins, rank and other factors, this is a CoD game for almost everyone. Even we managed to get our hands on a Hellstorm missile and an RC explosive car, which is really saying something. “Rewarding desirable gameplay,” is what it's all about, according to Game Design Director, David Vonderhaar. You can also earn a bunch of repeatable medals too “for doing cool stuff”, which is always nice, right?

3. It's Got Tons of New Gadgets - With its futuristic year 2025 setting, the floodgates are open for all manner of near future tech, and Black Ops II's arsenal is full to bursting with more gadgets than James Bond's underpants. Shock Charges can be carried alongside your frag grenades or semtex charges to stun enemies and temporarily impair their vision, while accessing Score Streak rewards enable you to deploy an Escort Drone to help shoot down some rivals, drop a controllable AGR bristling with miniguns and missiles onto the battlefield, fly around a controllable quad-rotor Dragonfire drone (both can be let under AI control if you prefer) or call in a Hellstorm missile airstrike.

Other Score Streaks (you can pick three separate from your 'Pick 10' out of more than 20) include the unmanned Guardian turret that can cook your foes with its wall of intense heat, a care package with a random item inside (like a military Kinder egg), an explosive RC car and more besides. You can also take a big old riot shield that you can plant into the ground (a la Gears of War 2&3) out with you (at the expense of one of your Pick 10 slots) and if you're smart with your chosen weapon attachments, there's a range of different gadgets you can take advantage of. Take the Millimeter Scanner for example that picks out stationary enemy heat signatures behind walls and through smoke grenades, or the laser sight, or the underslung grenade launcher and so on... There's loads of gadgets! Loads! And tomahawks.

4. It's Got That New e-Sports League Play Thing – These days, e-Sports is all the rage, apparently. To capitalise on this, Call of Duty: Black Ops II will ship with its very own facility that allows you to broadcast (correction: CODCast) all of your multiplayer exploits with an array of features to support it all. The aim is to make competition fun at any level, with several tiers available for players of all types. With CODCasting, all you'll need is some robust upstream bandwidth, an optional webcam, and that's it.

As far as features straight out of the box go, League Play and the ability to CODCast is pretty damn substantial, unlocking masses of potential with always-on broadcasting, live streaming for matches, overhead mini-maps for tracking the action, nameplates (likened to sports jerseys by Vonderhaar), the ability to listen in to player chat (keep it clean!), a score panel keeping track of the action and commentary. We're a little fuzzy on the intricate details, but it all sounds awfully exciting for CoD fans and anyone curious about entering the e-Sports scene. And it's all included with Black Ops II, fully formed and ready to go.

5. There's New Modes and Zombies is Back  – While some modes, like Wager Matches and thus the in-game 'COD points' currency have been excised from Black Ops II, there's a handful of new game-types making their debut in Treyarch's latest crack at CoD. While there's the new Strike Force mode tying in with the single-player narrative portion of the game, multiplayer sees multi-team deathmatches for up to six teams playing as either the SEALS, SDC, FBI, Mercs, ISA or Militia, and the aforementioned king of the hill-style HardPoint mode. Granted they're modes that have been in countless first-person shooters before, but here their execution promises to be unparalleled. Based on what we've played so far anyway.

Black Ops II's Zombies mode has yet to be properly revealed - although it has been confirmed - at time of writing with only the artwork above offering any sort of clue as to what to expect. Not a whole lot is known about Zombies in Black Ops II and anything beyond the fact that it'll feature zombies is being kept under wraps for the time being, other than Treyarch's Director of Communications, John Rafacz telling us that it'll be “the biggest zombie experience [you've] ever seen”. We happen to know that the first details on Zombies for Black Ops II are set to drop very soon though, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled. As Rafacz also revealed to us, Zombies will use Black Ops II's multiplayer engine, which will help to provide a “dynamic experience”. And that sounds good to us.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will be launching on November 13th, 2012. Bring. It. On.

MW3 had this many changes and it still was the same and (IMO) sucked. I got Black Ops and liked it for 4 months then started hating it and sold it. I got MW3 hardened edition thinking to looked like the best game last year and it's made me have unbound hate for cod. There's no way I am buying this one.

Halo 4 is my GOTY. Everyone should try it out instead of this or Far Cry or something anything. They all play like it (FPS) but are way better. Far Cry 3 is pretty much got the same but better MP. Check it out.

If I ever do but it, it'll be a pre-owned copy. Not spending a full $60 for this. Made that mistake with the last two CoDs.

I like the idea behind the score streak system but I worry that they'll institute a way to either reward players for being terrible or give custom classes too many options to make rewards irrelevant, which has been the case with the last two CoD games.

Until they completely rework the perk system (and maybe they did, I don't know) its going to be the same inbalanced MP.

There really isn't that big a change. MW3 had support and specialist streaks and survival which is a much bigger addition. There were a couple of other things as well but I can't think of them. Really makes your realize how much change is in a COD game when you can only think of 3-5 things.

What's with all the the "Halo 4 is GOTY" talk needs to stop. It hasn't came out yet (neither has Black Ops 2, i know), but i don't see a bunch of COD fans going to Halo 4 articles telling people not to buy it. You people are almost as bad as the Battlefield fans. People like different games, get over it.

@13 Halo fanboys are fucking annoying.
BF fanboys are fucking annoying.
CoD fanboys are fucking annoying.
All fanboys ARE FUCKING ANNOYING.
Its not all the people who like the games, it is, as with most things, the vocal minority. Because someone doesn't your game, doesn't mean you have to do anything at all. Just leave it. Little things called opinions, y'know.

OT: I will be getting this for some fun with friends. It will be pretty damn similar to the others, I'm sure, but still fun.

I wasn't too interested in Black Ops II until I heard about the 10 slot class system, it sounds interesting to me. The score streak is also I nice touch. I doubt I will end up buying this game this year though.

@26 I, and many others, care about the campaign. I agree that zombies is the most exciting aspect though.
I had to reserve a copy of this; Blops 1 was fantastic. I will be extremely disappointed if Treyarch accidentally the series twice in a row; MW3 was weak sauce.

@26:

Gayarch? You are a literary GOD! /sarcasm

My take on Call of Duty is pretty much this: The perk system has killed the fun of this franchise. Essentially, you have six perks, which can pretty much make you a god on the battlefield if you're even half decent at this game. MW3 got boring for me. I loved playing with friends, but it just got so damn boring! Black Ops was pretty fun; definitely more fun than the glitch-fest that was MW2, and better than the newest MW title.

The problem doesn't just lie in the CoD corner, at least in my view. FPS' in general have over-saturated the market to the point where I find them boring. I've seriously had much more fun - and spent many more hours - playing games like Dark Souls, Skyrim, Dragons Dogma, etc. Upcoming games like Dishonored, Resident Evil 6, XCOM, Tomb Raider, South Park: SoT, and Borderlands 2 have me much more hyped than CoD or Halo. And don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing FPS at launch, but a few months later I'm completely bored again and moving onto something else.

Oh, and my vote for Game of the Year - even at this early stage - has got to go to either Dishonored or Borderlands 2. ;)

I think that after black ops 2 which I'm sure will be quite good, Infinity ward and activision should not release another addition to the serious for next year but instead early 2014 giving them more time to make a better game with everything that the people want. this will make it a lot more popular and enjoyable as it won't be rushed and will have everything we want making a perfect cod.

Hilariously, despite the long list you posted, the only game I would consider out of those is AC3.
OT: Looking to get this. Having skipped MW3, I'm somewhat refreshed on the CoD playing field. It all comes down to how good my Uni internet connection is and how much cash I have, but it comes out 2 days after my Birthday so it should be gravy :P
Oh, and guys... if you have to do CoD bashing, don't stick Halo 4 in your comment... you're just looking like a fanboy. The BF/CoD war is bad enough, yet alone with Halo fans suddenly joining them on the apex of gaming immaturity.

I find it funny that they say there's a bunch of new gadgets, and then they proceed to list a bunch of gadgets from previous games given new names, except the cooker thing, which has to be one of the worst ideas I've ever seen.

Seriously, this game is being overhyped by everyone and it's going to get great reviews because it's supposedly doing something new, which is something expected from every sequel, but it's not doing ANYTHING new. All they're doing is updating it with a couple gadgets, guns that are given different names but resemble guns from past games, an OK campaign at best, and shitty maps (COD hasn't had a good map since COD4). But this time it's futuristic! What a difference!

I'm getting tired of people saying this is any different from past CODs, when clearly it's not.

@13
Halo 4 will be GOTY for me, because it's being developed by a huge group of talented people that have already proven themselves. They've released more dev diaries and gameplay than most, and they're clearly trying their hardest to fill the enormous shoes left for them. It will be the most complete game of the year, with the most replayability, except for maybe Borderlands 2.

Yep same old shit over and over it was pure grade A bullshit that Modern Warfare 3 took home shooter of the year at last years gaming awards are you kidding me? That should of been either Battlefield 3 or Gears of War 3 both games where superior to MW3 but this year I think Halo 4 has what it takes to outperform COD and take home its rightful awards of Shooter of the year and Game of the year maybe I am being overly optimistic about Halo 4 but I don't think so everything shown of Halo 4 so far has been excellent. Call of Duty might have the most played multiplayer right now but not for long not only is Halo 4 bring halo's addicting multiplayer to the table this year but Medal of Honor Warfighter is also being released those EA army shooters are starting to eat away at COD's profits so lets see what happens.

Okay, right, I've had enough of this: everyone posting about Halo 4 and how it will be 'Game of the Year' - no one on this thread gives a shit whether or not it will be. This is a thread about Black Ops 2 (which I am really looking forward to). I'm not going to go out there and say Halo's bent or anything like that, because unlike all of you, I'm not a prick. I'm sure everyone on the Halo 4 threads have all the time in the world to hear what you have to say, just shut the fuck up when you're on a thread about Black Ops 2.

As much as I want to be done with the COD series, I do admit, I really like what I've been seeing for BO2's MP. At this point, I still say this isn't going to be a day-1 buy for me, but I will pick this up sometime down the road.

I would have pre-ordered it if Halo 4 wasn't coming out this year also. Although I'm pretty excited about the game because de Modern Warfare part of CoD is dead for me, used up, no changes, right in the trash. The only thing I hope for is that MW keeps populair to the little annoying kids so they won't rape our ears with their ignorant voices and meaningless conversations on BO2.

About the game itself though, it has a great graphical upgrade and looks really nice, from what I've seen. Also fact that Killstreaks are turned into Scorestreaks is a big one up for me. Not that I don't get much kills in a match but helps getting rid of campers at certains points of the maps.

There will always be people that hate COD as well as people that love COD. There is not much in between nowadays, but luckily there are lots of other good games coming out like Far Cry 3, Borderlands 2, Halo 4, etc.. That being said I think there is more innovation in this game than people realize. Maybe I'm wrong but it should at least be given a chance to stand on its own before being disregarded as "just another COD."

score streaks are a good idea in theory. but in practice, as long as you still get points towards a gunship from getting kills without dying.. there will still be pussies not playing the objective and lurking around trying to "drop sum moabz"

going for objectives is dangerous in terms of ruining your streak, for obvious reasons... i cant see people suddenly going for them now just because they count towards your streak (which they did in mw3 anyway??)

still very excited for the game.. hardcore dom and search ftw :)

also, completely agree with #55.. cod developers cant win either way.
if they change anything people will complain about the changes, if they change nothing.. its "the same game as all the others"... which is bs.

really seems like a lot of people just hate on cod because its fashionable to do so.
it is an extremely fluid, competitive, engrossing franchise.. and the reason its so successful is because it deserves to be.

I haven't played a CoD game since MW2 and this hasn't done anything to change my current intentions of skipping this one too. I find it hard to believe the gaming public lets them tweak the same game they brought out the last 5 times and break their own sales records (from the year before) in the process! As long as people keep buying them they will keep making a CoD game every year but until they give me a reason to buy the next one I'll go back to my copy of MW2, it's basically 90% the same in the MP.

I'm not a CoD hater and am quite open to buying a new CoD game again in the future should they bring out one that appeals to me but in the meantime if I want to play some military FPS MP (which I do reasonably often) I am quite happy to stick with Battlefield 3!

I have always prefered Battlefield, but I must say i am excited about the removal of the killstreaks and basing them on points. I always perform better in a support role than as a kill whore. I think this will actually create a more team based game where players actually help one another instead of just trying to pad their kill/death ratio. I ALWAYS play for the wins, not the kills (except deathmatch). This should be one of the better CoD games in a while.

No killstreaks is probably gonna piss off alotta hardcore COD fans but to me I think its going to level out the playing field for once. I have always been a casual COD player and let me tell you, when the pointstreak system came out in MW3 I thought it was genius. I cant wait to see all the hate posts about the killstreak nerf!

Why in the world is this article and a good amount of the people posting acting like score streaks are new? MW3 did it... so yeah. Nothing new here.

Just because it's BO2 and not MW4 doesn't make it "new" again. It's now a repeated feature. Just saying...

whats up with people saying mw3 had score streaks? i been playing the game sicne it came out. there ARE NO score streaks. if you are referring to the support streak. its kill based. not objective or performance based. the differance was assault u had to get kills with out dying. support u got kills but it didnt matter if u died. that all. nothing "score streak" about it.

and if your talking about that game mode drop zone. that was only one game mode. and didnt reach across the whole width of the multiplayer.

simply put score streak seems to be tryign to make the players play the way the game is meant to be played. if ur playing TDM then yes kills are everything. but if ur gunna play domination, search and destroy or ANY objective game mode...the idea...is play to achieve the objective. not camp, halo hop, and auto aim 360 bullshit and say "oh im so good at this game. go break your disc kid". multi player is team based and score streak seems to be trying to point that out.

Flags, Dom Points, shooting down air support like Choppers, UAV's, taking out Predator Missiles etc...all got you a "streak" They were just called "points streaks" instead. Exaclty the same.

MW3 is awesome

I believe score streaks work like for example you need 500 score for a streak and you'll get 150 from capping a flag and 50 from a kill which is 200/500 points. At least that's how I understood it so it's not like in MW3.

@84 Halo 4 has almost dominated the conversation in this article. We could also talk about Assassin's Creed, which changes less every game than COD but gets no shit for it. Revelations is almost the same exact game as Brotherhood. Except *gasp* they added bombs! I would go as far as to say MW3 > AC:R.

Well then again, that's just my opinion.

1)It will twice as horrible as the first
2)It's a wanna be Modern Warefare with lame shit added
3)It will always suck
4)If I want to play zombies I'll go play a ZOMBIE game
5)This game is so horrible I wouldn't play it even if someone even gave me the game. I rather play the CoD2.

That about sums it up the right way.

"Traditionally in Call of Duty to reap the benefits of helpful support items like care packages, helicopter gunships, the AC-40 or whatever, you'd have to be some sort of online first-person shooter demigod (or a big fat cheater)"

You must fucking suck at call of duty if you think that getting an AC-130, not ac-40, dipshit, is abnormal or requires some stupid amount of skill. My girlfriend can go 30-0 on free-for-all with the damn m16, multiple times in a row. Yes she gets called cheater, but so does anyone who is good at the game. It's people like you that make COD multiplayer un-enjoyable because you think anyone who does better than your sorry ass is a cheater. fuck off.

Score streaks are a good idea for making people play the objective, but really it doesn't solve the problem with people camping etc to avoid death rather than going for the flag (When I was playing Mw2, I ALWAYS played domination when I could).

That said, this has piqued my interest. I said after MW3 I wasn't getting another CoD at full price. But this game looks very cool in terms of the SP and now the MP is looking, at the very least, interesting. Not a fan of zombies though.

I like the idea with the more open class system this could make for some interesting combinations as well as being able to have extra perks without giving up your Score streak rewards.

I am not sure why it has to be one game or the other with some people on here just because someone is getting COD doesn't exactly mean they won't be getting the likes of Halo. Maybe you just need to get a job if your mummy won't give you enough pocket money to get more than one game a year.
I don't know if this is going to be good or not but I will at least play it before I declare it as shit as I will any other game.

I can go on about how MW3 ruined for everyone but that would take too long. All I can say is that Black Ops 1 was a very good game the only thing bad to it was the gimped sniping (which progressively got better). Look past the games' flaws, it was one of the best CoD's to date. Treyarch did a very good job by listening to the community, something Infinity Ward failed to do. This is why I believe Black Ops 2 will be the one of the best, fun and balanced CoD's since CoD 4 and that is a promise! Treyarch learns from not only their mistakes but from IW's mistakes and listen to the community. It has all the potential to be a great Call of Duty game. So pre-order for a good CoD game in a long time!

Yes, there have always been tons of CoD fans going over to Halo articles and saying it's horrible and not to buy it as well, just go look, but that doesn't mean I support either side. I'm a huge Halo fan and to me, CoD is dead, it's been the exact same thing for so many years now, and while I respect Treyarch for trying to change things up, it still looks pretty similar to past games. You don't see me coming over here and saying, "don't buy this game, it sucks, do yourself a favor and pick up Halo 4," because I realize not everyone likes it, but pointless comments like the one I just mentioned don't persuade anyone to not buy the game they want to buy. I intend on buying Halo 4. I don't intend yelling at CoD fans to buy it, though, and I expect the same thing from the other side.

It's cool that they have implemented this new 'score streak'. Will give people more of an incentive to actually play the game and complete the objectives for once rather than players sitting around getting kill streaks instead of actually winning the game, which is something I have hated about the COD multi-player or the past couple of releases.

But it does this thing to my head.. every year im like nah. cod sucks no way im getting it.. then all my friends tell me to get it and im like ugh fine. Love it, sucha great amazing game.. then about 20 minutes in im like waitttt a minute this is the same exact game i bought 2 years ago.. wtf

So thats what happened the last couple of CODs.. I will probably rent black ops 2 to play some zombies.. zombies rule. Maybe run through the story since its futuristic and stuff.. but I just cant ever justify spending more then $15 after I spend $60 on the best selling copy paste that MW3 was

The cod series is an anual thing so im not excited to get the game i just dont feel like they put the time and effort into the game if a new games is out in a year most of the games i buy dont come out annualy but a few years between games ie gears mass effect halo just tried battlefield 3 for first time and i like it because its different from the yearly cod grind probably will catch up with the cod story but after price drops

CoD is following the steps of Guitar Heroes. Getting over saturated.

Yes Cod has had its up and downs for the last few years but I have faith in Treyarch. They actually listen to the community. I agree MW3 is bascailly MW2.5 but it had the potential to be the greatest cod ever, its just that Infinity Ward lost all its good members after MW2 so that's why it hasn't been as good, but I loved Treyarchs games, Black ops is by far my favorite and WaW is runner up. But the reason CoD is never perfect is because they have a lot of fans and a lot to give to us. There's always going to be something that the fans complain about. You try shelling out a PERFECT game that wil please everyone in less than a year.

Meh, I'll probably rent it to blast through the campaign and return it. I'll stick to Blacklight for my future shooter fix... which Blops 2 looks like to an incredible degree... except Blops is a hell of a lot browner.

Great Article, Sadly this Game sucks more the a dyson vacuum, Errors upon errors, For a record breaking launch this is just beyond horrible take notes from battlefield and invest in dedicated servers.
