Festive Features #5 - Top Five Best Easter Eggs of 2013
Written Thursday, December 26, 2013 By XBA Staff
It's done. Christmas is over, you've eaten more food than anyone should, you've stuffed that crappy pair of slippers your Nan gave you into the bottom of your wardrobe, and our Festive Features are coming to a close. So as the celebration of Jesus' birth farts to a sleepy end, we're rounding things off with something that alludes to his re-birth. Yes, it's Top Five Best Easter Eggs Time!
Tucked away in our favourite games, easter eggs offer up nice little surprises for fans, knowing references, extra little bits of info and the occasional bizarre diversion. Done right they can be completely ace. Our top five picks certainly are. But which of them won? Find out below.
5. Blood Dragon's Heroes in a Half Shell
It’s fitting that Ubisoft’s ode to 90s action-fests should include a nod to everyone’s favourite mutated martial artists. This optional side-mission from Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon sidesteps any tricky legal licensing issues, but with the sewers, the pizza boxes and those painted on bandanas, we all know what they’re getting at. Cowabunga dudes.
4. Tiny Tina's Dark Soul
Another easter egg that hints at its source material rather than outright naming it, this Dark Souls reference in the Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep DLC for Borderlands 2 is really nicely done. Bonfires, souls, swords, skeletons, humanity - it’s all there. A lovely nod from one fan favourite to another.
3. GTA V's Ghost of Mount Gordo
If you stumbled across this ghost in GTA V, you could be forgiven for thinking ‘huh, that’s cool’ before getting on with your adventures. But this is the easter egg that gives as much as you put in. Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover that the game’s letter scrap collectibles and the Mystery of Leonara Johnson, as well as one of Trevor’s Stangers and Freaks missions all tie together to provide clues to this supernatural occurrence. Remarkable stuff.
2. Booker and Elizabeth's Circle
Wander slightly off BioShock Infinite’s beaten path and into the Graveyard Shift bar, and you may be treated to this touching moment between Booker, Elizabeth and… a grubby urchin living under the stairs. The song choice is rather apt too, if you know what we mean. It’s a gorgeous scene.
1. The End of a Decade-Long GTA Mystery
You could fill an entire list just with GTA V’s easter eggs, but this one’s a cracker. After years of rumour and speculation about the presence of bigfoot in GTA: San Andreas, Rockstar took the opportunity to put their own spin on the long-running myth in their own unique manner. There is a yeti in the woods and he’s… well you can see for yourself in the vid below.
What makes this so great isn’t just the history, it’s the lengths that Rockstar went to to deliver the joke. Only accessible once you’ve reached 100% completion, bigfoot is encountered during a mission that many players would never come across. Only the most dedicated would find it. Plus, it’s bloody hilarious. GTA V’s bigfoot is the best easter egg of 2013 by miles.
