NBA 2K11
NBA 2K11 Servers to be Shut Down
Written By
View author's profile

News of online servers for annual sports titles doesn't usually come as much as a surprise, but 2K Sports has confirmed that it's shutting down the servers on Visual Concepts' NBA 2K11 in mid-November after a mere 13 months of being active.

NBA 2K12 is still relatively fresh out of the gates, being in stores for just shy of a month and given its online issues, it could be that the majority of NBA fans are still enjoying NBA 2K11 online. This news of the game's servers being switched off might anger some fans.

NBA 2K11 also has unique online features like My Crew and Online Leagues, which NBA 2K12 doesn't, creating another reason for the NBA 2K faithful to get upset. The NBA 2K11 servers will be shutting down later this month, so get some time in with it while you still can.

This is embarrassing and there's nothing more to be said about it. 13 months. That's fucking pitiful.

I did not expect that at all. That is completely absurd. They shouldn't do this at all really, but 13 months? I remember how many people were still playing fifa 10 when 11 was out, a lot. and 11 was flat out better. But the fact that 2k11 has unique features over 12 as well, i don't even...

this is prob the reason when I see a EA Sports game in a store I make sure I avoid it even if I do want it, unless it has no online achievements. If I really enjoy a game I do like to go for the achievements but I find it pointless if I can never completely finish it. Thats why I stopped playing NFS Carbon after a few days because I found out it couldn't be 1000g. I know cheevies aren't everything but like I said it shows the time and effort I put into the game.

Don't know why EA do it though, THQ's servers for Smackdown vs Raw 2007 are still active and I can imagine it's only boosters that play it online. And TNA iMPACT, no-one plays that yet can still be boosted online

@ #4 this isn't an EA game. Nice try though. EA servers last at least 2 years usually.

the downside to dedicated servers, i reckon they should atleast make it so when they do close these servers down, people can still host their own games, it's really sad to see these things in the news feed,

Is it impossible for them to kill the servers but then just allow people to play it P2P with a host? Keep it alive for those who want to keep playing it?

Probably to save on resources such as electricity and make people buy the new one. This is pretty vicious. Now lets see what the other companies do.

They have to recall all the copies of nba2k11 because of false advertising on the game and sleeve. Because there is no online multiplayer.

This is quite a disgrace for only 13 months of activity. I beyond hate EA for what they do to their servers, however, for one mere case, 2K has taken the spotlight of money grubbing douchebag. Amazing to see at the end of the day how our $60+tax and DLC expenses (if we choose to pay for them) goes to total waste because the newest thing is out or because the company feels its a burden on their net income to allow us to get what we paid for!

I really don't know why they can't set it up so that as soon as the dedicated servers are shut down a title update could be pushed to enable private matches with people on your friends list at a minimum with one being the host. This goes for all sports games with online modes.

This shouldn't be happening if people still use the servers. I can understand if noone plays it but I should think a lot of people still play this for the leagues or whatever. Seems to be the bigger companies that shutdown servers too soon. Thank god not everyone does it.

They should be forcef to put a message on the boxes of the new games from now on; online play will only be available for 13 months or something.

Damn, I rented this and ran out of time so sent it back with about 330/1000, was going to pick it up on the cheap at some point. If I buy it now, by the time I get it, the servers will be gone... I guess thats more cheevos on the unachievable pile.
I do love how lots assumes that annual sports game + server shut down = EA. xD

2K are normally better, they still got Top Spin 2 servers working.

@25, quite obviously not you. I don't follow Basketball, but it's the principle.

That isn't to say there aren't people out there that still enjoy this game for the content that is in it. And considering they won't be able to play said content due to it not being in the latest addition, they have every right to be annoyed.

Such a shame really. They really need to sit down and think of alternate methods. Sure, shut down the servers but at least allow P2P as other people have mentioned so people who enjoy the game can continue doing so.

This is why online achievements should vanish.
This will probably pop up on GoD soon if it hasn't been there already.

Thirteen months and closing the servers is a disgrace. But I'm sure it's in the T&C somewhere they can remove servers at 30 days notice.

Sucks though, if only makers of games allowed hosted games, this wouldn't be an issue.

Since people don't really seem to be understanding the concept, EA is not involved in ANY WAY with this game. EA makes your Maddens and your NBA Lives, but this is 2K Sports and 2K Sports ONLY.

On topic, I don't really see 2K Sports having a tremendous server load, so I don't particularly understand this. I hate server closures; maintained servers should be just the cost of business. SOCOM on the PS2 only had their servers shut down last January. And that game was about ten years old at the time... if that's not a testament to the way things should be, then I don't know what is.

In my opinion, no game that plans to shut their servers down at some point should make online achievements. Why make achievements that are unattainable after a year? Also, does it really cost companies like EA and 2k that much to permanently keep their servers up? I doubt it...

simply disgusting, forcing people to buy the next game, why is it you can not still play with your subscription to xbox live gold?

if any 2 or more people own an ORIGINAL game and they both pay for gold, they should always be able to play online

This may suck, but if you read the license, they state that online support may be discontinued 30 days after the end of that season. This means, that all sports games could shut down their servers in 13 months. Doing that though, will hurt sales. I doubt anyone wants to pay $60 for a sports game that is only half a game in a year from initial release. If they want to do this, drop the price to a more reasonable price, like $35.

This is really stupid but somewhat understandable because 2K Sports are losing to EA. They're making better NHL games than 2K, which has forced 2K11 not to come to the 360 and PS3. 2K can't invest the money to keep the servers alive without losing money. However, by doing this they're losing their credibility very quickly amongst their fans and soon 2K Sports will have a grim end eventually.

@43 the reason everyone why people still play the game is because 2K11 still has some good features that aren't in 2K12. Even with updated rosters and gameplay people still like the certain features 2K11 contained
