Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Install vs. Non-Installed Screenshot Comparison
Written Thursday, November 10, 2011 By Dan Webb
View author's profile

The internet is rife with rumours of bugs and screenshot comparisons over the last few days, comparing the install version against the non-installed version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Reports came in thick and fast that the installed version of the latest Bethesda title actually looked worse than the non-installed version. Obviously, not installing it though adds seconds onto the load times and also causes your console to make obscene noises whilst you try and immerse yourself in the vast world.

In order to see for ourselves and to help you decide whether you should install it when you get your hands on it tomorrow, we decided to snap screenshots from both the installed and non-installed versions of the title. Creating saves and then loading, snapping a shot as soon as the game loaded, from our experience, there really isn’t much of a difference. Now, obviously, this is our experience with the title, using an Xbox 360 Elite to play the game and is not indicative of everyone’s experience, but for most people, they should see what we saw. It's worth noting that the comparisons and complaints appear to have appeared pre-patch as well.

In short, install the shit out of it as soon as you get it. Take a look for yourselves below and make up your own mind. If you want to see the proper 1280 x 720 captures, click the images; we suggest clicking them and flicking back and forth between the windows/tabs if you really want to compare them.

If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t forget to check out our review of Bethesda’s latest title right here, right now.

I see the difference. It's pretty noticeable looking at them side by side, but I doubt it'd be that bothersome in-game.

Isn't it funny how we just recently got the ability to install games and already the sound of the disc drive annoys us? :)

On topic, a couple of the uninstalled screens look brighter but that's my personal opinion. I'll be installing it regardless though to cut down on load times and allow me more time to play what I anticipate to be my favorite game in a long time.

I see a difference! The PC version looks better! pwnt.

Seriously though, there isn't too much difference here. Looking even closer, there's no difference at all. The changes in light are just because the light source moved (I.E flickering flames). There isn't a massively noticeable difference. Though installing a game like this is always better, if for no other reason than load times when entering buildings. ;p

P.S. PC version all the way.

Call me naive on this subject, but should there even be a different in quality between installed or not installed versions of a game? I thought installing only helped with loading times? And also with not accessing the disc as much. Why would there be a difference in video quality between installed or not?

In the second set of pics, the uninstalled one looks a million times better. Just switch between windows. In the installed one, the wooden floor and the stone wall are all washed out. On the uninstalled one, the textures are much more defined ... I don't really know what to make of this ...

There is a slight difference, it is more detailed in the installed version. But even so, the installed way is the better way since it is less hard on your disk drive, and doesn't make the xbox run as hot.

@27

I'm not an expert on this, but my guess is texture load time. If you're yanking off the HDD, it's a lot faster than from the disc. That means that - given the need for playable fps - you have time to load the larger texture resolutions from the mipmapped files, and also that you have time to apply the nicer special effects. Once you're in a stationary environment for a few seconds, the LOD should be the same (after a couple of seconds) regardless of whether you're running installed or not. But if you're horseriding at full tilt through varied terrain with large view distances, it would be best to be running installed or you'll suffer an LOD (and then an FPS) drop.

It doesn't look very significant. The graphics in general feel slightly underwhelming. Environments are nicer, but character models... kind of bland. Ah well. It should still be a great game regardless of install or not.

Frankly, I'm waiting for a console to have the memory it needs. Google and Wikipedia lead me to believe the 360 has half a gigabyte total memory... I suspect there are now phones with more than that.

I just tested it both ways; clearing the cache each time too; and overall you might not notice it; but when I when into my items and rotated my banded shield; which I'd noticed was very detailed when I first played (from disc) - when it was hdd installed it looked low res and lacked all the detail - cleared cache, uninstalled, loaded from disc again and the high res detail was back - it was like night and day. It's not game breaking, but it is there.

#28 is absolutely right. The screenshots in the set with the man on is throne have some differences on the wall texture and the wooden floor texture, especially the wooden floor. You don't even need to look closely to see it.

But, we have to wait for the Day 1 patch to really check this out. And even with this little differences, I think that the advantages of installing the game are way more interesting than some slightly better textures. Espacially when you're acutally playing the game and not staring at screenshots, which are ALWAYS worse than the actual game.

Dont u guys think you over-rated, in terms of review, this game. I'm not saying it doesnt deserve a really top notch score BUT look at Arkham city, surely Arkham City has better audio/music/voice acting, if oblivion got 100 in audio, surely Batman should? And you even state the combat is clunky in terms of playabilty yet it gets 100 and whilst batman is almost flawless again u give it 95...I'm NOT saying Batman is better and i'm not deliberatly comparing these two...but surely u went a bit overbored with the ratings??

What's up with the graphics?

I mean, in my personal opinion, they look God awful compared to the videos I've seen. I mean damn, just look at the table in the first picture... Literally no intricate detail from what I can see. It looks all smudged and shitty, including the plates.

So, again I ask, why is there such a giant difference in quality between the trailers/videos we've seen, and these screenshots? Like, what the fuck. Unless of course the videos were on a super computer at max settings, at which point it makes sense to have a big difference.

I'm with the general consensus here. There really ain't that huge a difference as far as the graphics are concerned. I'd agree that the colours look a little richer in the installed versions but other than that the quality of both is pretty damn high. I'd personally be more worried if installation (or bugs/glitches) caused problems with gameplay.

yeah i dont see any difference an i think Battlefield 3 basically put any rumors of the install making a difference to bed since their HD textures were INSTALLED an running off the HDD, along with the game itself as most ppl probably had installed that as well.

@56 the trailers and gameplay vids may have been from the pc version, but it's not exactly ugly for such a massive game imo

OT I installed it tonight before I even played it lol, as far as I'm concerned reduced load times are much more significant than negligible differences in brightness levels.

Either of the screenshots look fine. The first 3 pictures uninstalled look a little sharper, but the the remaining pictures look pretty much the same. One thing to watch for is if there is movement in the scene. With the lighting and cloud movement, along with hand movement, its hard to make a real comparison. If it saves the disc drive some wear & tear, thats probably the route to go.

You can see the differences; the "Installed" shots are a little darker, and the textures blur together slightly. It's not a major problem, but if anyone else is like me, once they know there's a slight problem, they'll constantly notice it and it'll start to drive them mad.

Only the very subtlest difference from what I can see (characters spell hands pic being the most obvious). Shall be installing anyway for the load times if nothing else!

Maybe if they compared PC to Xbox 36o. That would be more interesting viewing.

See Captain Taco is up to his old trolling tricks again.

But as for the graphics? Get a life! If anyone wants realism blah blah blah. Leave your house and experience "the real world"! Think how far consoles have come since mid 90's and you still moan? Oh wait, most probably wernt even born then. I grew up playing games on Commodore 64 and NES! Check them graphics out then complain at Skyrim. I despair and pity all who moan at graphics these days.

It seems to me, that the uninstalled ones look a little bit sharper, and more detailed, but the installed shots have better colours... probably won't be too noticeable in the game though.

Captain Taco is KING TROLL on this website but it seems he dosen't over step the rules or you'd think he would've been banned buy now.
OT= good thing I got like 150gb left on my 250gb harddrive, I don't know what I'd do if I had the original 20gb hard drive. My friend just traded one of those in at Gamestop and got $2 for it.

I'll install this game...

On my PC!

OT: Doesn't seem to be much of a difference at all. If you have enough room and some more, I'd say install. Otherwise, on disc should be fine (i've never noticed the sounds of the disc running in my Xbox before. I'd be too immersed into a game to notice).

Oblivion and Morrowind had pretty crappy graphics and it didn't stop them being brilliant games. Bottom line - what moron gives a fuck about some slightly better textures on this game? Srsly.

Im sorry Im not trying to be rude, because I love this site. But whoever wrote this article does not understand the situation. The graphics, when working correctly, are almost the exact same installed or uninstalled.

However this is not the problem. The problem involves textures loading. Sometimes textured loaded from installed version comes out extremely low res, almost like a PS1 game its so bad. There is no mistaking it when you see it, and none of the screenshots you posted show it.

So like I was saying, you can play this game for 10, even 20 hours and not see it once, but that doesnt mean its not there. And the texture loading problems only show up when you play in installed to HD, not when playing from from disc.

Again Im not trying to "troll" or whatever. Elder Scrolls is one of my favorite series of all time and Skyrim will be contender for game of the year. And the graphics dont matter to me that much anyway. But I did want to clear up some of the misgivings this article seems to imply.

I love Skyrim, and I installed it as soon as i got it, then downloaded the patch, and the textures could at best be Standard Definition, especially snowy terrain, i was almost let down, I thought Todd Howard would have made the game at least better than Oblivion, and it just looked lazy, almost every texture I saw.
I uninstalled, ran from disc, and the game looks just as beautiful as it was advertised.
I’m guessing my problem was installing then patching, rather than patching then installing, try that if you’re experiencing these flaws, the game deserves to be playing in HD, it’s worth a little extra loading for me.

So it seems to me that "installed" makes the game darker, where-as "uninstalled" is a little brighter. Can't we just make it the same by just monkeying with the brightness settings in the game, or on our TV's?

I'm glad to see the comparison. I think there is enough of a difference that I'll take the time to install it. I would play it in 8 bit and be happy though.

if anything installed looks better, the colors are a little richer. Either way if installing the game puts you off at all perhaps your too much of a nitpicker to be playing such an immersive game in the first place.

The only things that change between install and uninstall is the depth of light rendering and the level of contrast in the game. Textures very rarely improve and those that do are usually insignificant to the game (e.g. world objects like books, plates and some interactive objects).

Either way, the game is beautiful to look at it. If you want shorter load times with a significant improvement to light rendering, installing the game is for you; otherwise, enjoy it as it is uninstalled.

It's like a game of spot the difference for the insane! When you only have one screen to looks at then installing it becomes more about load time, not risking freezing and noise!

The only image I saw a difference on was the third one. The walls and floor on the installed version are blurred, whereas on the uninstalled their sharp. Personally I'll probably have it installed (give me time to get some uni work out the way before I start playing it!)

The benefit for me will be the seconds it shaves off load times. With the amount I'll be playing those seconds are going to add up!

I think they look a bit better uninstalled? Okay, they are brighter and less moody but I think they look prettier.

I'll probably install anyway (I stick installs on while I'm making dinner so as not to waste my actual play-time) just to save those few seconds at loading.

Isn't it funny how we just recently got the ability to install games and already the sound of the disc drive annoys us? :)

I know method... its so distracting how did I ever play it before. when the disc spins i just stare at the box waiting for it to explode.
install regardless there are more dowsides than up in favor of installing.

Holy crap! I just wasted 10 minutes reading the article, comparing the pictures, and reading everyone's comments (the differing opinions being the ONLY thing of note).

I could have been playing the game already - which I'm ready to start now, but I'm wasting another 2 minutes typing this message (I'm not a typist)!

Just play the game, everyone... and don't worry about a few pixels!!! :-)

I don't really notice too much of a difference. I only looked at the first two close up. The floor boards do look better in the uninstalled pic. I wonder how the game would compare on a 360 that has a faster 7200rpm hard drive. I'm also wonder how fragmented our 360 hard drives are by now and how that is effecting load times. We could really use a defrag tool for the 360.

I probably should have mentioned that I "did" install it. After some playing, I entered a cave and killed the enemies, and noticed that one of the enemies - who died face-up and was laying across a rope-bridge - did NOT have smooth textures on her face, like there was a lack of anti-aliasing or something. I saved the game right there, quit to the dashboard, and reloaded the game.

When I looked at her face again, I was expecting to see nice, smooth textures. It was not one bit better! The only thing I DID notice different, was that the disc constantly spinning was loud!! I quit and reinstalled the game to the hard drive (it only takes-up 3.8 GB, BTW).

If you always install games to the HD that you play, I recommend that you keep doing just that (I always do)!!!

It reminds me of my childhood where you had 2 pictures and you had to find the 10 differences between the 2 pics....Installed screens look a little bit better. But I was hoping that it would be more like battlefield 3 and that HD-pack installed.

I 'm gonna install it to reduce the loading time and to give my disc drive a rest. lol

what ever the difference is ,i suspect all it is a faster loading game, optimised textures(meaning they look the same but maybe they are smaller in size, but just as detailed) loading from hdd ,But anyways my plan is this!,install the game play it from hdd until i know the patch has come out, install it,uninstall the game ,but keep the saves, then reinstall to hdd, maybe install patch again(why i wonder he has advised not installing the game just yet?).
