Brink Developer Making a Marvel Game for Disney?
Written By
View author's profile

A feature published on Industry Gamers, entitled "United Front: 7 UK Studios To Keep and Eye On" has revealed an interesting morsel of information surrounding Brink developer Splash Damage, hinting that the studio might be working on a new Marvel game for Disney.

The report notes that Splash Damage is currently developing an "unannounced project for a major entertainment brand", which is supposedly "based on one of the biggest American pop culture brands of the last 50 years". That sounds a lot like Marvel to us. That major entertainment brand is also said to be "a company widely believed to have given up on the console publishing business", which could well be the same Disney that closed down Tron: Evolution developer Propaganda Games and Split Second: Velocity dev Black Rock. Disney also purchased Marvel Comics recently.

It then goes on to say that the new project will feature "online multiplayer technology" and will run on "an even more polished Brink engine". Are we talking id Tech 5 here then, or a polished version of id Tech 4, which is what Brink used? Either way, it seems that Splash Damage could well be working on a Marvel title using a version of its Brink engine, which may or may not be a tie-in for The Avengers movie scheduled for release in 2012.

We'll just have to wait and see...

I wonder if there will be women in this game unlike Brink? It would be nice to see a super hero game without Activision involved.

They never should have cancelled the first person Avengers game. That looked epic.

As for this, I'm all for more Marvel games. If not Avengers, this could be Amazing Spiderman tie-in?

Lets hope this is a proper Avengers game and not one that's a movie tie in. And I agree with #6, I was really looking forward to the one that they cancelled

A Marvel/Avengers Title with "online multiplayer technology" would be awesome.

@11: Oh Thor wasn't that bad, as long as you never opened the package and left it on the shelf in the store.

As long as Splash Damage does something about their AI programing I would give them a second shot.

On one hand, I love Marvel. On the other hand, Brink was one of the worst games I played this year (I traded it in, and I never trade games in anymore). I'm torn.

I'm kind of excited for this. Activision has been raping the marvel franchise... maybe splash damage can do something different for once.

The ONLY good movie tie in game that ive actually enjoyed playing was Captain America. The combat was amazing, flowed so smoothly and was great to combo multiple enemies. I hope that they make a sequel down the line at some point. Lets hope that this game can also play like a super hero game is supposed to :D

By most accounts, Brink was a bad game. Two of Marvel's recent three licensed games, X-Men Destiny and Thor, are simply bad games. I would love for the Avengers to be good, but I'm not holding out hope.

Maybe this will spur on the XBLA release of the four-player classic, "Captain American and the Avengers".

@#7: Yes, Brink was disappointing critically. However, I'd say that selling just shy of 400,000 copies on the 360 alone during the first week of release can hardly be considered bad.

@26

Sales don't equate quality nowadays, have you SEEN what tops the charts? There were a whole lot of suckers (me included) who were taken in the Brink pre-release hype, I bet the drop off for that game's sales was almost a straight line down.

@27 It's because Deadpool is not an Avenger (yet).

I like my Marvel comics but games have been poor, i can't see how they could transfer the Brink engine for an Avengers title. I could see an action/platform game with independent levels or routes for each character based on their abilities though.

E.g. your winter base, can choose Hawkeye or Cap; air battle Iron Man or Thor; stealth Ant-Man or Wasp
