At this point, our cynical alarm bells would usually be blaring loudly, what with the official announcement (following the spotting of a poster in October) of a movie tie-in game and all, but this is The Amazing Spider-Man. And it's returning to New York where the webslinger belongs, instead of swinging between alternate dimensions or some such, which Spidey comic readers will know as something that only occasionally happens to the ol' webhead.
What's more, this isn't a prequel or a direct tie-in to the upcoming film, but rather an epilogue story that picks up after the events of the movie, which is due to release in summer 2012. There'll be free-roaming around New York City - which was a winner for Spider-Man 2: The Video Game - as Spidey must protect Manhattan from a range of criminals and villains.
In development at Beenox, the game is being written by Battlestar Galactica and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena scribe Seamus Kevin Fahey, taking Spider-Man onto and under the Manhattan streets as he fights crime with acrobatic moves and a new Web Rush mechanic.
There'll be a debut trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man game at the VGAs this weekend, but until then, enjoy this lovely piece of artwork to go with today's announcement. The Amazing Spider-Man will be coming in summer 2012 at the same time as the movie.
