Don't panic. Codemasters is still working on DiRT 4, but as a stop gap, you can look forward to the trick-filled showstopper that is DiRT Showdown, which takes the franchise and shoves it into an OTT world of razzle and dazzle where there's demolition derbies, tricks and other daring stunts to be performed.
Expect more Gymkhana as part of the proceedings too, alongside the fireworks and bright lights as you engage in some crash-tastic action in the game's destruction derbies in front of massive audiences of cheering fans. There'll be stunt-based racing, standard races and demolition events, with one instance involving simply smashing up every other car in the arena without writing off your own ride. Good luck with that one.
Apparently, the handling will be simpler to enable you to pull off tricks and stunts with ease, and DiRT Showdown will also feature extensive multiplayer options too, with support for split-screen and online multiplayer for up to eight players. There's even an Autolog-style feature planned, so you'll be able to challenge your friends.
DiRT Showdown will also offer three types of vehicle to choose from, with muscle cars and SUVs for racing, Hoonigan cars like Ken Block's Fiesta for Gymkhana and stunt-based shenanigans, and tough, durable Demolition vehicles for the events where crashing is the name of the game. Get your seatbelt on for DiRT Showdown when it releases in May 2012. Check out the debut trailer from GameSpot below.
