XCOM: Enemy Unknown
XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the Old-Skool RTS That You Know and Love

Firaxis Games is taking XCOM back to its old-skool RTS roots this fall with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, introducing the series in its original guise to a wider audience on consoles in the same year that 2K Marin's tactical XCOM shooter set in 50s suburbia arrives.

Putting you in command of the global anti-alien defence force, XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be taking XCOM back to the cerebral, strategy gameplay that made it such a hit back in the day, with turn-based tactical gameplay enabling you to control everything that transpires on the battlefield.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, President of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

Game Informer will be running a big feature on XCOM: Enemy Unknown in its February issue, the digital version of which will be available from Janauary 10th. You can check out the February Game Informer XCOM cover below. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is slated for release in fall 2012.

Wooooo I can't wait. I used to play XCOM all the time at my grandpas when I was young. Can't wait to kill me some Aliens attacking earth.

With the FPS coming out as well it seems we have our beloved franchise back.

YES! Enemy Unknown and Terror From The Deep are two of the best PC games I've ever played, I hope this new version does them justice!

Wait, so now it's not a FPS?! Great news if it's like the original. Used to play the shit out of that game with my dad.

Wait, so there's an XCOM fps-style game coming out some time this year, AND XCOM: Enemy Unknown?

Or JUST XCOM: Enemy Unknown?

So are we to look forward to X-COM's alleged "RTS roots", or to its "turn-based tactical gameplay"? Or is the author not actually confused in the slightest, but rather hinting that it'll be like X-COM: Apocalypse, and feature both?

@16: The original ufo/xcom had both real time in the global strategic mode (very slow real time but it was still real time) and turn based tactical in the deployment missions.

I was planning to write this off as another probably cockup until I saw mention of firaxis. Now against all my usual cynicism there's a flicker of hope.

Sounds interesting. I wonder if they can pull it off. RTS games don't really belong on consoles IMO and none of the very few there is was able to change that for me as of yet....

Really interested to see how this pans out, my only issue is not having mouse control, but the original was turned based and not real time

Enemy Unknown was awesome and am really looking forward to this I hope it is not too different in playing style, just a new plot, i.e. different aliens etc to research.

@5 Chaos Gate was also great, only trouble was it would never go past the 5th level on my PC before crashing so would be good to finish it.

So yeah playing the old ones right now off steam an holy fuck do they need a tutorial. My feeble child brain doesn't know what the hell is going on. But regardless, Firaxis made the greatest strategy game of all time so I have extremely high hopes for this.

Great that they are doing fans some justice, Hopefully this will reduce negative criticism and outcry on XCOM FPS, As for one I'm interested in that version
