Irrational Games Announces 1999 Mode for Bioshock Infinite

Are games a bit namby-pamby easy for you these days? Fancy playing something that challenges you rather than just rolling over when you stroke its belly? Then Irrational might have just the thing for you.

Irrational Games has announced 1999 mode for Bioshock Infinite. It's "designed to challenge players in a variety of ways – each requiring substantial commitment and skill development." A throwback to a time when games demanded more of the player, 1999 Mode will include tweaks and features that you won't experience in a standard play-through of BioShock Infinite, regardless of difficulty level.

Ken Levine, Creative Director of Irrational Games, says of the mode. "We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots. In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specialisations, and focus on them.

"I'm an old school gamer. We wanted to make sure we were taking into account the play styles of gamers like me. So we went straight to the horse's mouth by asking them, on our website, a series of questions about how they play our games. 94.6 percent of respondents indicated that upgrade choices enhanced their BioShock gameplay experience; however, 56.8 percent indicated that being required to make permanent decisions about their character would have made the game even better."

In addition to all of this 1999 Mode will task you with managing your weapons, power and health in a "challenging" fashion. Sounds a bit like you'll have less of all three to play with.

Presumably in response to the fact that the original Bioshock barely punished death, 1999 mode will also be a little more hardcore. Rather than just respawning you at the nearest checkpoint, you'll be sent to a Game Over screen if you lack "the resources to be brought back to life."

"It's not for the faint of heart," concludes the statement.

Bioshock Infinite, which is going to be the best game ever created by humans, is out this year.

Good, I'm sick of "let's hide behind this wall for 5 seconds to get better" shooters nowadays. They aren't hard even on the highest difficulties, they are just longer.

This sounds very interesting but the only complaint I would have (and I know it's nit picking) but why on earth call it 1999 mode? Games weren't that hard back then.......if I was going to name it I'd put it back a few years to 1991 or so when we were all playing hard as nail games on the Nes/Megadrive etc

Cannot wait for this game. And Ken Levine is awesome. Even did a class research paper on him. Only dreading the inevitable achievement for beating 1999 mode without dying lol

On 2nd thought. There wasn't any achievements for games in 1999, so there shouldnt be any for this mode, right? Haha

So, why not just call it "Hardcore Mode" or call it "Special Difficulty". I do not see how this at all felated in anyway to 1999. I played games way back in '99, and they weren't THAT hard. And we didn't have games like this back then, so it's hard to make a comparison.

I'm guessing they just picked the title of the game mode out of their ass.

"Best game ever created by humans?"

... I think so. And this sounds even more freaking awesome than what we've seen already!

@#14: "I do not see how this at all felated in anyway to 1999."

Well, I think there was quite a bit of fellation going on in 1999, if you catch my drift.

Anyway, this is one of my most anticipated games of the year. Hopefully, 1999 mode won't be as much of a hassle to get to work properly as Bioshock's Brass Balls requirements.

I think the original Bioshock was pretty oldschool to begin with considering you could carry more than 2 weapons had to take medikits to heal and exploration based level design. Hope they won't remove that from normal mode.
I guess this won't let you use Gene-Banks anymore.

To everyone asking why they chose "1999 Mode" - System Shock 2.

System Shock 2 came out in 1999, and was made by Ken Levine. Pretty sure it's a reference to that, which is part of his/their roots and the root of what ultimately became BioShock.

Also, @#9 & Others, it's not meant to be a "hard" mode. It's not a difficulty. It's an entirely different way of playing, fused with things that would be in a harder difficulty.

Has nothing to do with games being hard or not in 1999.

This game is going to be awesome, but best game ever made by humans? Was Skyrim made by machines or something? As great as this game should be, I don't see it being better than Skyrim. However, who would complain about coming in 2nd to Skyrim?

I love challenges like this. I loved the Hardcore achievement for Dead Space 2, since it forced you to keep your wits about you. Going to love the **** out of this game. It will never leave me. It will hold me and love me and cherish me until the end times...

I'm cold...

Quality stuff, the mans a fucking legend! Games that artificially make things hard without implementing anything other than 'less health/ammo' routine are becoming a chore to complete. Would much rather have a strategic challenge instead of a persistance challenge (leave that to Trials... no really leave it to Trials!)

Why don't they just make that the game and have easy respawny mode as a reward in which you can explore the game at your own pace once you've earned it?

Reminds me a bit of dead space 2's "hardcore" mode. Only 3 saves made for an enormously challenging but infinitely rewarding game experience. I was hoping more people would pick up on that!

i smell a brass balls achievement equivalent coming on...WELL CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! I've got to 100% this game just like the 1st game. turns out Ken Levine is even more of a genius than i already thought-finally someone has worked out how to make games more challenging without using the now damn boring less ammo+harder hitting enemies that do more damage=more time waiting for recharging health behind cover formula.
any one else also dying for the system shock series to be brought back. E f*cking A own the rights but maybe irrational can buy the rights after infinite is out.

Call it 1985 mode instead, and have an unjumpable gap that you need to jump in order to finish the game.

@#32 Might as well since you asked nicely...

OT: Sounds a bit like that harder mode added with DLC to first Bioshock where you would have no checkpoints, and only used save games. Sounds like a fun idea and I bet I will spend some time if not even go for a full playthrough in it=)

ah 1999 when things were clunkly and we weren't knee deep in need of money. i see the system shock 2 references like others are pointing out my guess is a kind of old school style were checkpoints were not really there and things were hard looking forward to this.

Girl there looks way too much like someone I know. I dont think I'll have Bioshock posters up in my room to join my four Bioshock 2 posters if they feature her ._.

Sidenote: Why even bother "punishing" players for dying? Unless your going to delete the save file when you die, players will just load the game, which is hardly different from simply respawning. Brass Balls wasnt difficult, it was just slightly more tedious

I'm excited for this game and I am guessing this will be an extreme form of Arkham City's New Game Plus. I bet I will love this game enough to play it a few more times, so this harder game mode plus achievements should hopefully just be icing on the cake.

So many noobs and kids who never played a real RPG. People who think Skyrim is the best RPG of all time were born in the 90's or 2000's.

Hit up the old CRPG's from the golden age of interplay/black isle: Planescape Torment, Ice Wind Dale, original Fallout 1 and 2, and of course Baldur's Gate. Compare that to the shit that is Elder Scrolls.

Skyrim is an okay game that lacks any real depth in combat and leveling.

So yeah Bioshock beats Skyrim any day. Tired of people hyping it up, it's not that good.

Oh and for the record, Bioshock is simply one of the best videogames of all time. It would easily make any decent top 20 list of best games ever made. Certainly, if there was a video game canon, Bioshock would make the list without a doubt.

I'd say it's the best game of this generation so far. I hope Infinite lives up to the original. The second one wasn't quite as good and deserving of the Bioshock name.

I can't see them being allowed to give an achievement for this mode, according to the developer this mode is going to be hidden by a code out of view of "causual gamers" so they don't come across it - they can't hide a mode connected to achievements!!!!

"Ken Levine, creative director of developer Irrational Games, revealed to Kotaku that the hard-as-nails new mode is going to be hidden from the main menus via a code, because he does not want casual fans stumbling across it by accident."
