Dead Space 3 Could Be an FPS According to Visceral Job Listing
Written Tuesday, February 28, 2012 By Richard Walker

With EA apparently looking to expand the Dead Space series beyond its established third-person roots, a job listing could be pointing to an entirely new direction for the next game in the franchise, as Visceral Games is searching for a Multiplayer Level Designer with plenty of FPS experience.

In the job listing, there's the promise of "a major opportunity to contribute creatively to an exciting IP", providing you're "an avid FPS gamer" with "previous experience as a Multiplayer Level Designer on shipped shooter/action titles". It also asks that the ideal candidate be able to "conceptualise, direct, and build multiplayer levels for the game" and create "believable real world multiplayer level designs".

Lived-in, believable environments are key to Dead Space's innate terror, so as OXM points out, hiring a designer with an eye for building convincing real world locations makes a lot of sense. Previous rumours suggested that Dead Space 3 - assuming it is in development at Visceral - could be set upon an ice planet called Tau Volantis where Isaac supposedly encounters an enemy known only as the 'hive mind'.

This previous rumour also suggested that Isaac might be stalked and constantly taunted by 'Shadow Isaac', a dark, twisted and sarcastic version of himself in Dead Space 3.

Visceral Games is also on the look out for an Environment Artist to join its Montreal studio and specifically work on the Dead Space franchise in some capacity. So, that's a confirmation of sorts. The Dead Space series is set to return in some form or another in the near future. Whether that form is an FPS with an emphasis on multiplayer however, remains to be seen.

[Thanks, Mix]

I hope not. Making it an FPS can only limit or remove altogether the things which make it so special.

Well they already botched the 2nd one by screwing up the plot and dumbing down the level design and game play...why not just bury the franchise by turning it in to Skyrim?

It seems to be the direction all developers are taking. I think dev's need to get their heads out of their own asses... I can see why Skyrim might be impressive from a developers standpoint but in a real gamers eye, it's just Oblivion did nothing for me.

@17 in 3rd person you can look around corners without making yourself known or vulnerable. I also like seeing my character (not to say I DON'T like 1st person) and their equipment details. I think it adds to the experience. 1st person sometimes have iffy controls (not for MOST shooters) but think of Mirror's Edge's 1st person controls. yes it was new and innovative, but I also was unsure where my characters was standing some of the time and so I would jump too late for a gap or something similar, plus I was always wondering what my person looked like besides their wrists and hands and occasionally feet.

@17 IMO, the terror that DS1 gave us was only palpable in 3r person, it gave you more a sense of being in it than FP did. I think if they go 1st person (looking through issac's eyes) then the over the shoulder (3rd) terror from 1 and 2 will be lost. I personally think first person is more clumsy, but that's me.

I wish EA would listen to the fans. I've heard maybe .05% saying they'd like this or play it and the rest sayong how much they hate the idea. I'll be sick if they make it 1st person. They have a really strong fanbase, but they're getting greedy trying to buy into the COD mentality (I like COD, but not that much) and get more people into their game. They should try something other than going against their current fans just to get new ones.

Please this must be not true because Dead Space 1 and 2 is amazing horror in Third-Person Action/Shooter in both series. Please stick to what 2 series is amazing from.

Visceral Games I beg you please do not do it!!! If you want first-person shooter then making it for new IP title.

I hope it is fake rumours!! God damn if true then it is rip off for Dead Space series.

Two things to take from take listing. They only mention FPS once, mistake maybe. Second, an "exciting IP" may well be something new. Dead Space Extraction was an FPS (albeit on-rails), and wasn't bad.

Are you kidding me? This is all Call of Duty's fault. Every game developer these day thinks if they make their game a FPS or give it multiplayer that it doesn't need, then that must mean it's gonna do great. Wrong! Just look at Alan Wake, sure it had shooter elements in it, but no multiplayer element at all, and it was great! Bottom line, please just go back to how the first Dead Space was.

So EA want to turn a solid 3rd person survival horror franchise into a generic FPS MP game? Sounds about right for EA. If its true, DS2 will be the last one of the series I play.

My guess is actually the singleplayer will stay as it is. Then either turn the multiplayer component into an FPS. However the more likely option is simply that EA are aware the multiplayer wasn't that well received and want someone who has worked on a popular FPS, to bring some FPS sensibilities to the multiplayer component.

I wouldn't worry about the singleplayer turning into a FPS.

Theres no way this would happen, they couldn't change the most basic of concepts on the gameplay like that, it just doesn't make sense. This could only go bad tbh, why would they honestly change the game from a completely stand alone and noticable title, to just another fps?
Surely the developers have enough comon sense to stick to their routes, and are only after this, for some of the necromorph designs, keeping main gameplay to 3rd person, and the nerco's to first perhapse, that would be fine tbh.
Now, we just sit and wait...

@#27: Jesus. That is not necessary, however retarded EA is acting.

I will be severely disappointed if this does become an FPS with a HUD on-screen. It could still be good, don't get me wrong, but it could very much ruin what Dead Space is.

Dead Space 3 is supposed to end Isaak's trilogy. After that, go ahead and make different style Dead Space games, but don't fuck with the main trilogy.

Ok, seriously guys, reread the article...'Multiplayer Level Designer'...MULTIPLAYER. Jesus Christ, this doesn't mean Dead Space 3 is going the FPS route entirely, there's one of two hopeful scenarios that could be happening OR WILL be happening. Either they could be making the multiplayer a deathmatch type deal, where FPS level design experience will be key, OR they could be making the multiplayer component FPS this time around, so a majority of people hated DS2's (personally, I loved it).

So I think you guys should calm down a bit before you explode about it...I'm a huge dead space fan and reading all these posts is simply...embarrassing.

I am reading the article and I don't see the job listing giving any implication that this is Dead Space 3.

I don't know why you would jump to such a conclusion.

Even if it is Dead Space, it won't be Dead Space 3. Just like Ignition and Extraction weren't Dead Space 2.

Calm down guys. This is speculation (wild speculation at that) based on barely any proof.

EA, "real environments" and the fact EA wants to branch the series does not back that this is Dead Space 3.

When EA said they were branching the series, they meant like Ignition and Extraction. As in, they want to make crazy genres for the expanded universe. Not Isaac's main adventures or Dead Space 3.

This is just as stupid as the reaction to some Nintendo news that dropped Saturday evening...

WOW Gaming is getting redicilous! Yeah let remove all original game and make them FPS! All this because of what? Because of hipnotized peoples who dosent care to aim and shoot for entire day and why not entire life? Omg i hate fps with a passion.... Not because it aint fun, but because most of the people who play call of battlefield is what they only play. They dont care about other games, they are satisfied to aim and shoot. Making the game industry into a single genre industry. FUCK THIS!

Dear EA/Visceral Games

Making Dead Space 3 a FPS will be the worst that you could do to the beloved franchise, making FPS spin-off would be alright but not to the main story.

The Dead Space franchise has always been and will always be great as a Third Person Shooter, because Dead Space being what it is in Third Person is truly unique. I don’t want to hear from you that the reason you’re making it into a FPS is because that it hasn’t been successful as a Third Person Shooter, sales aren’t everything you know.

Take a look at other Third Person Shooters like Gears Of War or Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, people love them for what they are. Do you think people would like them sort of games turned into a FPS? There’s too many FPS on the market right now, and for the most part it’s not only getting boring but really old as well. If you turned Dead Space into a FPS, you could lose a lot of fans and possibly a lot of money because of it. I’m not making any threats or anything, just giving you some facts, don’t ruin this please. If it isn’t broke then don’t fix it, I’m not the only one with this opinion, listen to your fan base and tell me that I’m wrong.

You would be doing the fanbase of the franchise a favour by keeping Dead Space the way it is, just LISTEN to them.

I'll reserve judgement until real concrete stuff emerges rather than a job description but i really hope it is not an fps. Im just about sick of them but not because they are all bad but just that lots of genres are already on the decline and then we have a 3rd person title becoming 1st.....maybe. Still, have to wait and see.

That's just fucking stupid. I like both Dead Space games but I am honestly unwilling to pick up another first person shooter. Dead Space used to be the game I would play to take a break from all the first person shooters. Here's an idea, instead of making it first person, make it last 100+ hours. We'd all much rather that were the case anyway.

Funny how a bit of conjecture and supposition about a job listing that EA have put up makes everyone jump on the EA hate bandwagon. This is neither an announcement for nor a confirmation of major gameplay change for the third Dead Space game. But it mostly looks like everyone just saw the title said "FUCK NO" and proceeded to rage in the comments without realizing that this entire article is speculation based on little to no evidence.

A job listing that says NOTHING about Dead Space and has no reason to be linked to Dead Space other than it being a game from EA.

Oh man... you guys.

This article+comments makes me feel like I'm on Kotaku.

(in Vader voice) Noooooooooooooooooooooo!

@#17 In FPS you can't really see anything that's sneaking up behind you thus eliminating a certain sense of tension/fear.

Not sure why ppl on complaining. Just because you lot haven't played Dead Space Extraction doesn't mean you know how scary game was. I've played it on the Wii and Ps3 and it is, in my opinion, the scariest game of the LOT. Part of that reason was because it was the prequel to Dead Space and you just had that gut wrench feeling the protagonists were doomed. I'm pretty sure if all you ppl complaining about this story had actually played DS Extraction then you would be more optimistic.

I'm sure it will turn out to be a scary fps game.

Is this because MP sank without trace in Dead Space 2? Why they can't accept that Dead Space just isn't MP-friendly and move on...

If they change the campaign to FPS I can gaurantee they won't be making a cent off of this guy, and probably most of us by the looks of it.

If Dead Space 3 gets made into a FPS, I won't be buying anymore EA games ever again, and I encourage you all to do the same!

Dead Space was all about horror. All about not knowing what's around the corner, and the feeling of being alone in a terrifying place. We don't want somebody holding our hand through the campaign, and we don't want a first person shooter. Any true Dead Space/Isaac Clarke fan should agree with me. EA had better not have sold out like the rest. If I wanted what this is sounding like, I'd play the Gears of War games.

And if there is multiplayer, for the love of god, no multiplayer achievements. I'd rather do the Hard to the Core achievement three times over on the second game than have to suffer through some of that bullshit.
No matter what the game turns out, I'm buying it. I'm hoping that EA knows what they're doing on this... They'd better not fuck me.
Anyone interested in going through the story with me and getting all the achievements when it does come out, send a friend request and message to GT: TheMinotaurFlip.
