Dead Island Sequel is Not in Production, Says Deep Silver

With Techland registering a trademark for 'Dead World' last year, talk of a Dead Island sequel has been swirling ever since with recent rumours even attaching Spec Ops: The Line developer Yager to the project. However, publisher Deep Silver has today stepped in and asserted that Dead Island 2 (or whatever you want to call it) is not currently in production.

"We are neither working with Yager on Dead Island 2 nor do we have any contractual agreement with Yager about any project at this point," Deep Silver's Development Director, Guido Eickmeyer told IGN. "We have neither something in place or in discussion between the parties that would explain such news, nor do we have Dead Island 2 in concept or production with external partners."

A Dead Island follow-up hasn't been ruled out though, Eickmeyer revealed. "There is a legitimate chance that we will – at some point – work [with Yager] on a title - and I would not even exclude the possibility that this could be something within the Dead Island franchise."

Where does that leave original Dead Island dev Techland then? Could the Polish developer be left out of the frame for a potential Dead Island follow-up? "We didn't confirm or deny anything. We can't stop anyone from jumping to conclusions, but we won't comment on rumours," Techland's International Brand Manager, Blazej Krakowiak explained to Eurogamer. "Let's set the record straight. The only thing that happened was that Techland registered Dead World as a trade mark. Let me point out that it's hardly the only trade mark we own."

But surely a Dead Island sequel is a no-brainer, given the success of the zombie-thwacking first-person RPG? "While Dead Island is Techland's most successful title, it's not a game changer for us," Krakowiak continued. "It's simply another proof that our philosophy of combining proven ideas with innovation and a fresh approach pays off."

It seems we'll have to sit tight for now then. There's no Dead Island sequel on the cards for the time being, it seems.

  • Thank god
  • Dead island was so hyped up, it turned out to be such a disappointment.
  • Fantastic game for the first 3/4 hours. As soon as you hit that city. Shite.
  • I actually really liked DI. I haven't played the Whyte Rider (sp?) DLC yet but the game itself was pretty damn fun. Only problem was I felt like my items degraded wayyyyyyy too fast. A sequel eventually would be nice. As long as they expanded a lot on some of the ideas from the first.
  • i really liked the game
  • glitch city!!!!
  • That makes me very sad. It was my goty, because of co-op.
  • well, that's great news!
  • Enjoyed it in co op,a bit boring on your own.
  • LOL Guido
  • For all it's glitches, shortcomings, and crap DLC, I really still enjoyed this game, it had some charm to it, I felt I was playing Far Cry 1 mixed with Left 4 Dead.
  • I thought it enjoyable on either SP or co-op. When doing solo, it was a lil more tense as you didn't have anyone watchin your back and with co-op, well, the more the gorier =P
  • I enjoyed Dead Island but I can't actually see what they would do with a sequel. Move it off the island and you risk losing the sense of being stranded/abandoned. Keep it on the island and your going to end up repeating yourself.
  • Thank god for that I would of thought many people would of bought a shitly remade version of a shit game anyway. Dead Island the worst game last year by a mile. Prepare for the thumbs down because of the community on the website.
  • My favourite games of last year. A zombie game that isn't Resident Evil done right! Would love a 2nd! I'd buy it day one.
  • Just give me the DLC with achievements on DOTW now that there is no sequel.
  • The game was terrible! Idea was good, delivery was not.
  • I never encountered any problems with my game and really enjoyed it ! Loved it when a m8 jumped in dropped loads of diamonds and infinate ammo guns!
  • This game sucked. The concept was great, the execution was horrible. imo
  • DI was fun but started to go downhill around the time you reach the prison. The story was weak and the ending just didn't seem like enough of a payoff for all the work that took to get there. Glitches and all it was fun to play but not worth $60 Who do you voodoo bitch!
  • Love the game. Better then that COD garbage.
  • I kinda enjoyed the game.Need more updates,for sure.And some free DLC'S.
  • Gutted, one of the best Co-Op games every made. really upset to hear this.
  • Shame. These days zombies appear nearly in every game witch is bad because it looses it's appeal BUT Dead Island was one of the best (if not THE BEST) Zombie game i played for years. It was so much fun to play ...
  • So much fun and I'm yet to complete it (waiting on some buddies so we can co-op the lost 2 chapters). I think a break will do them some good, gives a chance for a slow and thorough production time if they decide to make another, I'd just be curious about the storyline. As 15 said, the island gave the isolation factor, the mainland just may be too open. Who knows!?
  • @4 ryder white is horrible dlc
  • lol, look at all those voted-down comments. VOTE DOWN MY COMMENT TOO!
  • I hate it when people are happy about such announcements. Does anyone force you to buy the game? NO, so fuck off. Some of us enjoyed the game, and would like a sequel. You are major trolls, and that is it. On the bright side, it is nice to look down on you.
  • I liked the resort area, mostly, the city was alright, the jungle I didnt care for, and I didnt like the prison, I hated all the fights with humans, its a zombie game, I want to fight zombies, also thought there were way too many gofer missions, I swear every mission had the phrase "but first, you need to..." in it, so I'm kinda 50/50 on it, change up some things, add a bit more variety to the missions, and I would like it more.
  • dead island in my opinion was one of the best co-op games ive ever played and was a great idea but i think it would of been better if it had a stronger story and more character based as that could be interesting. hope a sequel can do that but despite that come on guys its hard to make a actual zombie story work. still waiting for a zombie rpg where you make your own character. would like a feature on this site about zombie games and why everyone likes them.
  • I enjoyed the game while playing it with 3 of my friends, playing it solo though it was kind of dull but still pretty intense.
  • All you people who think this was bad need your head testing, there was nothing wrong with this game, all those comments deserved thumbs down, i dont think so stop coming on here to be moaning little bitches and go play a worse game lol, thanks for reading
  • Other than experiencing a game-breaking glitch that made it impossible to start a new campaign with my character,I decided to trade it in. I thoroughly enjoyed the game(I got it on launch) This is not bad,but not good.
  • I played it with the analog control scheme and had a blast, that's how I think everyone whould play it. It makes it incredibly satisfying to chop zombie heads off.
  • Besides the save file corruption and the lacking cutscenes, this game was no worse than any Bethesda game put out to date. The game was not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but it definitely could of excelled at certain parts. I was actually tempted to go back and play it recently, so it has some lasting appeal, at least for me.
  • Dead Island was pretty good. CO-OP was fun.I would love to see a sequel. The upgrading the weapons was pretty awesome also. Yeah they did wear out quick, but still pretty badass.
  • One of the best Co-Op RPG games :/, I had real fun playing with a friend. Damn.
  • #6/#7: Um, you cannot be speaking that brand of sh*t given your trolling abilities. OT: So glad I didn't buy this. Played it at a friend's house and it played like a glitchy LFD.
  • I love Dead Island, a zombie game with massive open maps, what's not to love? Obviously its not everyones cup of tea, but I'm still playing it with friends. Shame there is no sequel, but maybe in the future.
  • Loved in but maybe we might see another dead island at a later time since it was quite fun, enjoyed it. Theres really not many good zombie games out these days. Resident Evil ditched zombies in 4 so all we have mostly is stuff like dead rising/l4d/dead island, some arcade games.
  • It would be stupid not to make another Dead Island. Loved that game.
  • I think that Dead Island 2 would be great. I heard there were a lot of glitches with the original game and I think a sequel could probably improve on the first I would buy into another sequel and I totally agree with comment #24
  • Absolutely loved Dead Island.I must be 1 of the lucky ones, never suffered a single glitch or any problem with the game, the arena dlc was refreshing and a shit load of fun,.Cannot wait for a sequel.
  • Shit game. Also, Calling a game bad=/=Trolling Idiots.
  • i dont care what these other gamers say, i loved this game and i still play it from time to time.
  • dead island is awesome,cant wait for a sequel,whenever that is =)
  • Dead Island was a bit boring in solo and tense, I got fed up with being KO'd all the time, my m8 gave me some awesome guns, and the game was complete!
  • dead island is awesome, the only thing i didnt care for were how the characters looked
  • i loved the game but it got boring on my 3rd playthrough alone but it was always fun in co op :)
  • why can people still post on this site without linking their gamertag to their profile?that would stop a good amount of the trash post i think.
  • @53 no it wouldnt stop anyone, you can just create a free xbox account in no time.
  • I didn't like Dead Island. It so did not live up to the hype it set for itself, IMO. But that doesn't mean the sequal wouldn't have been better. So I could've lived with either scenario; sequal or no sequal.
  • The more I played, the less I liked it, so I probably would have steered away from a sequel anyway.
  • Loved the game, a sequel is needed. More upto 4-player, sandbox style RPG/shooters are needed.
  • Okay, so this news story tells us approximately jack-shit. "We're not working with ___ on ___. but ___ might just happen at some point and we aren't ruling out the fact that company ___ that we just denied all involvement with, could possibly work with us on another game within the franchise, but we're not calling anything Dead Island 2, yet." Anyway, I liked the game - liked the trailer better, but alas; and I would totally buy a sequel. Let's try to cut down on the sewer/city sections for the next one, though, shall we?
  • Good idea. Glitchy Mess. I enjoyed beating the game, and look forward to 2 if they make it. Just test that crap. More glitches = less fun.
  • They need to make a zombie game which is 4 players co-op of course and have one huge ass continent like how Elder Scrolls or many regions like Borderlands and have it as a huge Open World RPG I need zombie games in my life not enough yet
  • the guys had a great idea to use the Borderlands style but for the love of god unless they make insane additions and improvements there'd better not be second one
