Achievements are not the only reason I game, but they have definitely helped me play some games I would have had no interest in other wise.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 06:45 PM
I still need to get Dirt 3. Pesky online passes..Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 06:55 PM
I really do love achievements but if you just play a game to get achievements or dont get a game that you love but dont get it because of achievements i mean really ? dont get me wrong i really do like trying to get full 1000g on games but im not going to not get a game because of the shear fact of achievements. hope you guys get what im saying but its just my opinion and by no means the right one :)Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 06:57 PM
@2 then I don't think you have business being on an achievement siteMonday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:02 PM
@4 same here!Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:13 PM
I don't feel right playin a game anymore and not see "ACHEIVEMENT UNLOCKED" pop up!!! I have always during a playthrough of a game have either thought of a pop-culture reference or some little quirky one and be like "Why didn't anybody else think of that?" Or "Why THE HELL!"Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:13 PM
Ugh I hate those "elusive" achievements a.k.a. the Trials games...Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:15 PM
Took way too long for this site to do this article.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:17 PM
Achievements taught me I suck at games.But I need to try harder to get them.Wouldn't do without them.I love it when I hear that sound that tells me I did something right without even knowing it.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:26 PM
@6 and 12 you do realise #2 post was pure sarcasm seeing as he has 219k gs?Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:26 PM
@6 He has 220k he was being sarcastic...Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:27 PM
Thank god for Achievements!!!!! The PS3 Trophies are another lame copy and paste tactic by SONY.What a jokeMonday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:27 PM
i wonder whats going to happen to this site if they do away with achievements with the new consoles, if rumors are to be true....Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:41 PM
@#16---DON'T YOU JOKE ABOUT THOSE TYPES OF THINGS!!!!Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:42 PM
Achievements are the best thing since sliced bread.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:42 PM
I wish they would do away with Secret Achievements. Yea I know you can come to this site and see the secret ones but still hate it.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:43 PM
i wasn't joking, im curious what their course of action would be, how they'd update the site or change it etc etc.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 07:53 PM
@2 says the man with over 200,000 gamerscore lol I hope you were being sarcasticMonday, May 21, 2012 @ 08:25 PM
@19 Secret Achievements that are story-related are fine I think, it's fun when you unlock them and deters spoilers. It's the secret achievements for doing some kind of incredibly random bullshit you would never do or think of that I don't like.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 08:43 PM
if it werent for achievements, i would only play games like cod and halo online, and gh/rb games.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 09:08 PM
I have over 100k gs and I've achieved nothingMonday, May 21, 2012 @ 09:11 PM
after days of trying to complete the bomb challenges on ACR I have finally and with much irritation figure out how to do it and more importantly why I could NOT do it before ... anyone else have that problem?Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 09:12 PM
Seeing as how I can't buy every game nor would I want to play every game, achievements are just another great way for a game to compete for my attention and gaming dollars.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 09:14 PM
anybody home?Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 10:09 PM
Try and get a talk with Bulletwitches achievement list producer all about the hardest difficulty having 1 GS aswell as Avatars producer and there 2 minute 1000 G'able gameMonday, May 21, 2012 @ 10:34 PM
I would happily flush my gamerscore down the toilet with the new generation if it meant I could enjoy games again without obsessively doing stupid crap I don't really want to do for dumb achievements just so I can keep my completion percentage over 90%. Don't get me wrong, some achievements are cool and fun, but a whole bunch aren't. I'll gladly accept them all going away if I never have to see Seriously 1.0 or the like ever again.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 10:39 PM
Achievements are the reason I played through the Left4Dead games so many times.Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 11:21 PM
#29 .....AMEN!!!Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 11:40 PM
Wait I'm confused maybe I am just really tired and missed something but this article only says they talked about that stuff. Not anything about. Did I miss something or truly sleep deprived (curse you minecraft!!!)?Monday, May 21, 2012 @ 11:56 PM
Just need Nintendo to start doing them, having some stamps, tokens in a few games doesn't motivate me to play their games all the way through.Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 01:10 AM
The psychology behind these "achievements" is something quite remarkable actually. Ive always been interested in how this system encourages people to do things they wouldn't normally. (play shit games) The achievement system actually resembles the way in which we learn to conform socially. By striving for the reward, which is merely a symbol of status, our true skill diminishes and our experience lacks true meaning. You would have to pay me to play a barbie game.Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 01:12 AM
although i would play king kong for 1000g lolTuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 02:26 AM
thats mainly the reason why I play and the fact that i got nothing better to do in my life but play xbox :)Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 02:32 AM
Personally I have mixed feelings about Cheevies. I don't think they extend the replayability of good titles, only mediocre, & bad ones. There are many games that I have replayed multiple times after getting 100% of the cheevie list. There are many games that I repeatedly play my favourite modes in, even though the cheevies are elsewhere. The cheevie system gets abused by some devs, for example ME3 has 2 cheevies only available in the CE or by buying the dlc that makes it catch up with the CE, meaning they are compelling you to buy the CE content in one way or another if completion is important to you. Or Dlc that basically works as pay us money and we give you Gs for pressing the start button. Or even pay us money and get 4 other people to do the same and we give you Gs for all using the same dlc at the same time. I also believe that cheevies are responsible for many good single player games having unnecessary Multiplayer bolted on. On the other side, there's that cheevies can guide you to explore things that you wouldn't have realised were in the game otherwise. They can encourage you to beat an section or an entire game with different types of tactics. They encourage people to try the hardest settings, that they otherwise would have skipped. As a means to measure a gamers skill, they are fine for the individual gamer that knows they just relied on skill. But in comparing to other gamers they are useless, due to boosting, glitching, camping of spawns, and save or jtag hacking. In principle they may have been a good idea, but in practise their measure has been completely undermined, and now are more of a selling tool for devs than anything of any value to gamers. It is interesting to note that games like Star Ocean Til the end of Time had 999 Trophies built in, and that was the last Gen. Or that Cheevies & Trophies are not too different from challenges that unlock things in older games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Timesplitters, Hitman, etc.Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 02:35 AM
@34 I saw a programme on the psychology of gaming and they had rats pressing a button that electrocuted them but also dropped food, they kept coming back again and again. Its the same thing with achievements!Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 03:39 AM
Personally, I enjoy trying to 1000g or 1250g etc a game. Some games I'll never go back and play, but some I get so far and think, "why shouldn't I just finish the game off". But they're not the be all and end all. Can't see Microsoft ditching the system now, after all, it makes Devs so much more money by selling crap dlc, that overpriced and way to short to actually be worth it. LA Noire and Saints Row 3 I'm looking at you.Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 04:17 AM
@38, I don't think I'd enjoy getting achievements quite as much if I got electrocuted every time one popped!Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 05:32 AM
Achievements are a 2 way thing. Yes, there good because it makes you do things you wouldn't of done otherwise. But you've got to look at it from the other perspective as well. Everyone with high gamer score, how long has it took you to get that? In that time you could of traveled the world, became famous... pretty much anything you wanted to do. Its kind of wasted time. (i'm not trying to insult anyone , if you want to get all the achievements that's cool. Its just life is so short, every second counts. It would be awful to look back and think fuck i spent all that time and i have nothing to show for it.)Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 06:49 AM
@41 You're kidding right? How can it be wasted time? I love playing games, I'd rather be doing it than a hell of a lot of other things, including becoming famous - what a ridiculous statement. Achievements are just an added bonus, I'm still going to be gaming for as many hours as I can because I love it, and I'll never look back and regret that. I also hate the 'life's too short' argument. Sorry but can you tell me something you are going to do that's longer?Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 06:54 AM
I need an achievement for making it through all these horrible responses without singling anyone out.Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 07:19 AM
Shame codemasters dropped GFWL few PC gamers will or do bother with Steamworks achievements.........Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 08:26 AM
lol @2, brilliant response.Tuesday, May 22, 2012 @ 08:58 PM
I hate achievements.Wednesday, May 23, 2012 @ 05:21 AM
So this is what they mean when they say "some extra polish" they've forgotten about the cheevos. Personally I'm a massive fan of cheevies, I've bought some random ass games I would have NEVER normally gotten and it's always a good ice breaker about gamerscore.... esspcially with gamer girls :DWednesday, May 23, 2012 @ 02:14 PM
@38 sometimes I feel like I am the rat pressing these buttons!Thursday, May 24, 2012 @ 07:17 AM
does anyone think that xbox should add in annomation achievement designs like ones that move for the valuble 50G,100G or even every single one what do you guys think, i think it would be awesome!!!!Thursday, May 24, 2012 @ 11:57 AM
@2 Yay Liddd's back!Saturday, May 26, 2012 @ 10:59 PM
It didnt really talk about the process of creating the achievement list like the title said. And #6 I agree, #4 why are you on a website that specializes in nothing but achievements if you don't care about them?Sunday, May 27, 2012 @ 05:08 PM
@44 Although achievements were the only silver lining of GFWL, I say good riddance. I didnt feel like having 10 different patches for a game I dropped $45 on.Tuesday, May 29, 2012 @ 09:01 AM
I am obsessed at times with getting achievements and at the same time horribly depressed that I have spent so much time doing what amounts to essentially nothing.Tuesday, May 29, 2012 @ 04:47 PM
I love a nice fat achievement list so that I ding every time I play. I don't mind putting in time to get an achievement but I do think some devs go over board with some, like the endless setlist. Props to people who have it, I just don't have a 8+ hour block of time.Wednesday, June 13, 2012 @ 11:28 AM
I am a big fan of cheevos too. Except for those ridiculous achievements that put you through a ridiculous amount of time or/and countless (and pointless, since nobody would play 1750+ matches of wherever mode it is in Inversion) online play. So, 100% disagree about online/MP achievements and DLC with achievements. I don´t think a really good game need achievements to sell some aditional content. In my case, I´m finished the game Bayonetta over 20 times, and I´ve 1k it in the first 3 playthroughs. And I would buy any and all DLC that there is, if they´ve released it.Wednesday, August 15, 2012 @ 09:30 AM
I love playing videogames, the achievements are a added bonus. I aldo like DLC for games, I would usually play the game a bit longer if there is DLC, usually before trading it in sometimes. The only thing I hate about achievements, though is that you have to play in co-op I never play games in co-op mode, so I'll never get these achievements. The only game that I have 100% of completion for is Bioshock, since I love that game :) Some of these achievements are impossible to gain :/

The biggest game changer since the inception of the Xbox 360 has to be in-game achievements. It spawned a culture. It spawned a new way to play games and an era of replayability. It spawned the PS3 trophy system. It spawned us.
We caught up with DiRT Showdown's Mike Chapman, Senior Game Designer, to talk all about the achievement and trophy world. We spent 5 minutes talking about nothing but the in-game unlockables that have blessed our lives this console generation, from when they start conceptualising them in the development process, what the process is, how the perceived change in attitude towards them has changed since the early days of the system and much more.
DiRT Showdown is out May 25th in Europe and June 15th in North America. Look out for our review this week, but if that doesn't whet your appetite, watch us smash up cars in a real-life DiRT Showdown!
