Just what is a MOBA, we hear you cry. Well, it's a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, and it'll be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade for 'Guardians of Middle-earth', Warner Bros Games and FEAR developer Monolith's Lord of the Rings/Hobbit tie-in title that'll offer 5v5 battling and will feature direct tie-ins to the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey movie.

Featuring 20 different guardians, including Gandalf, Sauron, Gollum, Thráin and many more, Guardians of Middle-earth's battles will play out in a variety of arenas set across Middle-earth, and will include an in-game voice communication system (chat then) and a comprehensive online stat and leaderboard system for tracking yours and your friends' online victories and defeats, among other things.

Guardians of Middle-earth will lead up to and go beyond the movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, with several new playable guardians that will release in conjunction with the film. Guardians of Middle-earth will be coming to the Xbox Live Arcade in autumn 2012 for 1200 Microsoft Points.

  • Hopefully a LOL clone, this could be the xbla rpgish saviour for me
  • Oh I saw the title and got excited because I thought it was an announcement for another battle for middle earth game.
  • The Hobbit. Another 2 part movie to make money. Thanks Harry Potter for that brilliant idea.
  • @3 I don't see a problem, I'd take 3 films based on The Hobbit as long as they are good. And I'm sure they will be miles better than Harry Potter and the Wizards sleeve.
  • I'm all for a Hobbit game, but some retarded MP only battle arena game.....ILL PASS!!!
  • Will this only be for XBLA?
  • @3 Yes, because the Lord of the rings movies were so bad and such a money grab with their 3 episodes of 3 hours /sarcasm.
  • MOBAs always have the absolute worst communities. If you're gonna get this, I hope you've been playing everyday since Dota, otherwise you're going to be bitched at for everything.
  • @7 Each movie corresponded with one book. Are you an idiot?
  • @7 You're an idiot because they correspond to two books each, six 'books' in The Lord of the Rings
  • @11 -nope, when I read them it was a trilogy - the clue is in the name.... Unless ur confusing the Simarillon as part of the LotR... cos there's a few books there.
  • @9 The last book was split into two movies. Honestly there was no other way to do Deathly Hallows though. The book was about 85% vital plot information. It would have been butchered as a three hour movie.
  • @12 actually you're wrong the lord of the rings is six books, the three books you know about are actually 2 books each.
  • @12 No they where originally 6 books, The Fellowship of the Ring was originally "The Ring Set's Out" and "The Ring Goes South", The Two Towers was "The Treason of Isengard" and "The Ring Goes East", and the Return of the King was "The War of the Ring" and "The End of the Third Age", and also had 6 appendices at the end.
  • @1 That was my exact thought I would be very happy with that
  • while im glad monolith is having succes working on these arcade titles i wish they would make a proper f.e.a.r game again.i wont be playing this game but will see the movie.i never read the lotr books but did read the hobbit.loved the lotr films and im sure these will also be great.
  • @9 Are you joking? I would much rather have two Hobbit films than one. When they split up the last Harry Potter book I was worried, but both films were great. This allows them to use more of the contents in the book for the movie. Stop complaining.
  • I'm not really sure how well a MOBA will fit on a console.
  • i loved the movies cant wait for the hobbit to come out
  • #3: There have been films way before Harry Potter that have been split into two films as parts/volumes/whatever. Essentially The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions were one film split into two and look at Kill Bill which came as two films, neither were done to make additional money (imo) and saying that all films that come in more than one part (that aren't part of a series) is crass.
  • sick!
  • my uncle is a extra on the hobbit. im getting his in-movie wifes outfit for absolutely free
  • Should be interesting to see how this one turns out. If it's anything like LoL on the PC (with it's massive following and it's competitive edge) then this should be pretty damn good! I hope! Thhere has not been a good LOTR since BFME got released back on the PC. Oh the days..
  • @ #15: In the special features on the DVD extended editions, he originally wanted just one volume, but the publisher at the time felt it would sell better in pieces. They gave him the titles, and he hated the Return of the King, since he felt that it gave away too much of the story. I'll be looking forward to this, and also hope it's a LoL-clone. Just got into it, and have been hoping for an XBLA port.
  • about LOTR books/movies. i thought i'd add my 2 cents here. the movies didnt do the original books justice. even in the extended cuts. they left out crucial characters like tim bombidil . i wish they would get it right or leave it alone. as for the hobbit, it took place prior to the 1st LOTR book. the LOTR books were done as 3 books. however they were made over & over again by their creator. also there were many interpertations of j.r works. so lots of confusion about his books took place. as for harry potter, i'm just watching the dvds now. the blood prince, amoung others, didnt need to be made. cant comment on how it ends though. overall the movies are decent. but with both, i perfer the books. same goes with the hobit. to much gets left out of the books. so hollywood can make more money. as for the games, i enjoy them. but a online game only is just a bad idea. i know many people who wont pay for xbl.
  • @26 thats tom bombadil , not tim.
