Dishonored's US Pre-Order Bonuses Unmasked
Written By

Bethesda has lifted the lid on the US pre-order bonuses for Dishonored, which offer a whole host of physical goodies and DLC to give you an extra assassinating edge during your sneaky killing spree through the dark streets and back alleys of Dunwall.

GameStop and Best Buy each have a physical item on offer - a deck of Tarot cards and a Whale Oil USB lamp respectively - while all four retailers have a DLC pack with various in-game items and upgrades for Corvo. Here's the deets:

  • GameStop – Arcane Assassin Downloadable Upgrade Pack & Dishonored Tarot cards
  • Best Buy – Shadow Rat Downloadable Upgrade Pack & Whale Oil USB Lamp
  • Amazon – Backstreet Butcher Downloadable Upgrade Pack
  • Walmart – Acrobatic Killer Downloadable Upgrade Pack
  • Target – Smart Phone Dishonored Decal

Bethesda is promising pre-order bonuses for other territories later on down the line in the run up to the game's launch. You can check out some images relating to the US pre-order incentives over on the Bethesda Blog. Dishonored is out on October 9th in North America and October 12th in Europe. Here's the E3 trailer again:

Getting tired of this pre-order DLC crap, devs are allways complaining about how long the day 1 DLC takes to make and they keep pushing this stuff, wtf.

Why can't every store offer the same dlc? Why the fuck has gaming turned into this shitty exploiting scheme? What happened to the days of going into ANY gamestore and just choosing which version you want? Why can't we ALL enjoy every version of the game...isn't that what gaming used to be about?

As if Epic Games with 4 different pre-order bonuses, a beta, and all kinds of other things wasn't bad enough... now this one has 5 pre-order bonuses. They're making cash off of people that will buy these up, just to sell them later on eBay for a higher price, due to its rarity. T_T

What the fuck? I should hope that these will be released as (free) DLC later on, lest I possibly preorder the game multiple times from different stores just to trade it in after I get the bonuses.

Wow. So much wasted hate. Just pick one or not. What are you OCD? I'm going for the creepy Whale Oil USB lamp because, well, that's just weird.

And your doors are unlocked.

@8, is that the preorder 3, get one free? That's pretty good. I mean, it's no Whale Oil Lamp, but still.

The way that they do all these different types of pre-orders saddens me. It feels like, no matter how good the game is the designers have created something that you can't get the full effect of unless you buy it from all five places and then just return the games and keep the bonus stuff.

Really want the USB, I'm picturing it being very cool. But Best Buy pre-order is... Inconvenient.

^I'm with you dude, this games reveal cinematic trailer was prett boss, and the concept is creative...but, in all honestly, Bethesda is the publisher not developer. it won't be as spectacular as everyone is making it out to be. nonetheless, I'm sure it will still be a great new game, but not anything amazing.

You people and your hate for exclusives make me smile. How many games in the past have had unique pre-order bonuses THAT YOU ACTUALLY USED PAST DAY 1? If you can't get full joy from a game because you can't use Mechanic Baird as your character skin, or you don't have that fancy pre-order sword that is only useful until level 5 in every rpg, then maybe you need to take a good look at WHY you actually play games.

There has NEVER, EEEEVER, been a pre-order bonus that was a must have or it detracted from the game's experience.

The only reason this "pre-order scheme" works is because OCD people like you allow it. I love pre-order bonuses because that means I get SOMETHING EXTRA I WOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN OTHERWISE. I have never, nor will ever, pre-order from someone just because of their pre-order bonus.

Ya know the phrase "Don't hate the game, hate the player". For the first time ever, that actually makes sense. Stop playing their "stupid game" if you dislike it so much -_-

@13

Ever play Return to Castle Wolfenstein? There was a lean button that allowed you to see around corners without being seen and it was an FPS game.

It was also made by another company under the ZeniMax Media umbrella (like Bethesda and Arkane). Of course it was made by id long before ZeniMax bought id.

If you didn't have the pre-order bonus DLC in Mass Effect 3 it did GREATLY effect some storyline elements. Play through the Asari homeworld with and without the Prothean...There are huge differences in the story that effect the story/lore of the franchise.

hey don't worry about the multiple preorders, because unlike some companies they actually release the preorder stuff after a while.

I'll get it but I won't pre-order it, I don't see the point in pre-ordering it anyway because it won't surprise me that most likly that all the pre-order bonuses will all be avilable to everyone months after the game has launched. Plus the multiple pre-order scheme is full of non-sence, either give everyone all of them or don't give them any at all. Simple.

Tarot cards? No, I'm caving in and preordering for those. I don't support 4 editions of a game or 7 different pre-order perks from wherever you get it from but the idea of getting physical swag for the preorder has always been the only reason I decide to do that (unless it was a Yakuza title or something that I knew I had to chip in and support in what little way I could) so hell yes. I WANT those cards, man.

having all these different DLC's is just BS. Still I hope the DLC is just skins, weapons etc because if the DLC has extra levels and gameplay I would be so pissed off if people were denied a part of the story and the experience just so someone could make some more money and that would also mean the devs worked on content that should have been in the game to begin with.

@18 but that wasn't a pre order bonus. It wasn't just tacked on with the basic $60 dollar game. It was included if you bought the collectors edition, or you could buy it on the marketplace after.

The DLC could potentially alter two things:

1.  There are 45 total charms in the game and only 12 are accessible in any one playthrough.  If you got all 4 DLCs and the game filters out the charms in your inventory from being cycled into the world, you could see 12 more in one playthrough.  That's a little over half.

2.  These statues that offer charm slots are likely just early unlocks.  If they aren't though, that's more ways to diversify your character in a game where the developers have made it clear you need to make choices in how you can grow your skills.  I think it's the first idea personally.

The money is obviously something that can be acquired in-game at any time and is something akin to the early credits from DE:HR when ordering from Gamestop.  The early lore access can be found in-game too.  I'm sure there's no levels being cut out.  I do wonder what physical items will be on offer out of the US though.  Arkane designed the tarot deck around the world of Dunwall.  It's 78 cards and there's a set of rules for a card-game enclosed.  You can read about it here.

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1377966-pre-order-bonuses-revealed/

I asked on the forums about the charms.  Hopefully a developer will stop in again and be able to answer my question.  They do pop in more than occasionally so I think I'll get one.

Can't wait for this game!

I was so hoping this would be a little like Fallout/Elder Scrolls in the way of gameplay. Due to Bethsoft's track record with games outside of those 2 franchises, I'm gonna wait for the demo before I put my money down.. I don't wanna buy another Rogue Warrior.

But, that being said.. this game looks awesome.. I hope it comes together nicely.

@16 The butt-hurt is strong in this one!

I remember pre-ordering Darksiders one from EbGames, with the pre-order bonus being that awesome graphic novel. Money well spent if you ask me!

I'm really beginning to hate these retailer specific pre-order bonuses...

They're even doing this with things like controllers.

Recently, they put out a nifty set of chrome controllers for the XBOX 360, in red, white and blue.

Problem is, you can only get the white one at Best Buy, the blue one at GameStop and the red one at Wal*Mart.

I wanted a red one, but my want for the controller didn't outweigh my want to not give money to Wal*Mart.
