Ryse: Son of Rome
E3 2012: What Happened to Ryse?

Two years ago Microsoft revealed Codename Kingdoms, a partnership with Crysis developers Crytek. Eventually revealed to be called Ryse, it was a Kinect-powered brawler set during the fall of Rome. It looked pretty cool.

More importantly, however, it was an attempt to convince the core that Microsoft’s motion controller is good for more than just casual games.

Trouble is, since its official announcement the game has all but disappeared, an absence made even more conspicuous by Ryse’s failure to turn up at this year’s E3.  So what’s going on?

Speaking in L.A. this week, Microsoft Studios’ corporate VP Phil Spencer shed a little light on the situation, revealing the current state of the game. Sounds like Crytek are struggling to get Ryse finished.

"We're just not at a point right now to show the game, and instead of... We're still working with Crytek, we're still extremely committed to the relationship, but we want to make sure that we're putting our best foot forward every time we show the game,” said Spencer.

"You'll see more about that game, no doubt.”

We will, but it would seem that when Ryse returns it may have undergone something of a transformation. When quizzed on whether it remains Kinect-only, Spencer could only say, "Kinect will be part of the game, absolutely." Hardly the most convincing statement.

So it looks like we’ll have to turn our attentions elsewhere to justify our Kinect purchases. For now at least. Steel Battalion, anyone?

Damn. This was one of the only Kinect games that had me excited. I hope they still release it at some point.

I'll never really understand all the hate for Kinect. Granted most titles are kiddy-games, but there are some that aren't.

Thank goodness they took a second look and decided to reconsider making Kinect the focus of the game.

It looks like it could be excellent, but I have no intention of buying Kinect. From what I'm reading, it sounds like it's going to be a controller-based experience that's "Better with Kinect" upon its next showing.

I approve.

I completely forgot about this game and the fact that there's been no news on it for two years worries me a little bit. I get that they don't want to show the game yet but the fact that there's been literally no news on this game since it was announced makes me think that it'll either suck major balls or it'll be stuck in development hell before eventually being cancelled

@7 Because it's a marginally better Eyetoy? Because the shovelware made for it is the same shit rotting at the bottom of Wii bargain bins? Because it's being shoehorned into games?

What don't you understand exactly?

Completely forgot about this game due to lack of news and information on it, looked great when I first saw it and I think I still have it on pre-order. Sounds like this is turning into a "better with kinect" title now. Hopefuly it won't be just voice commands and you can have the option to use a pad or kinect to see what is better, pad obviously but still be nice to have the choice.

This is the thing with big corporations like Microsoft, even when they are in the wrong tey are right. Kinect has flopped like the grey man united away kit, but Microsoft will not accept this. Granted they invested a lot of time and money into kinect but it just isn't what it was billed to be, just like the playstation ViTA and move, motion gaming will never be a part of mainstream gaming

I wouldn't call Kinect a flop. 8 million units in 60 days. Fastest selling consumer electronic device. 3/4 a million during Black Friday.
Might not appeal to you and your demographic, but its hardly a flop.

Also, want Ryse now.

@18 it sold on the basis of what it could/should of ask all those people who bought one wether they feel it was worth the money or if they would buy it again.

Ill re word for you, the vita has flooped, just like the psp, just like the vita, I get where your coming from but a lot of people flocked to buy what was dubbed as the next big thing in video gaming, aka they were sold a lie, demographics have nothing to do with cold hard facts my friend. How many units has it sold since the opening 60 days now that people have had a chance to use it and see all the pointless games that are compatible with it?

Please share those figures I'm very interested

Tehy just need to make more Kinect Adventures style games for it, thats where the device shines, forget hardcore gaming and just make better games that best utilise its capabilities.

OT: I was really looking forward to Ryse too, I hope the kinect combat element stays in because this was one of the few games that made it look relevant.

This was the only Kinect game that was looks Ok. Now looks like we will never see a AAA hardcore game on Kinect on this generation, only casual shit for kids and party's. Sad... i really regret that i bought the Kinect, next time it will never happen with your new devices Microsoft...

The only thing good about Kinect so far is The Gunstringer. Now that was a great, fun game.

@19, agree with you completely, I bought a Kinect as soon as it came out expecting big things, wound up sitting gathering dust behind my telly for several months because nothing good came out for all! I put mine on sale on ebay literally the day I found out Star Wars Kinect had a dancing section in it!

Is it just me who thinks that this statement screams next-gen? The fact that it wasn't at this E3 suggests it'll be coming next year rather than this one, and if I remember correctly, the leaked Bungie documents for 'Destiny' essentially confirmed that the next Xbox will be released in time for the release of Destiny in fall of 2013. Also, I expect that Microsoft will carry Kinect over to next-gen, after the amount of effort they're investing in it.

Maybe Ryse now come out in 2013 because they working hard and want release it to be awesome Kinect title. Or franchise now become next generation console with upgrade Kinect. lol

I got Kinect but this thing left dust for ages so I hope Ryse show it is great Kinect game. Or if they change their mind make Ryse to play normal controller instead of Kinect, if happens I will so much pleased. Hahaha

Hope that this will be good, I have yet to play a Kinect game other than the one it came with, Mass Effect, and Skyrim. Skyrim is my favorite use of Kinect so far and that's kind of pathetic.
