Castlevania: Lords of Shadow DLC Was a "Mistake," Says MercurySteam

The Castlevania: Lords of Shadow DLC add-ons were "a mistake,” according to developer MercurySteam.

Apparently the studio didn’t expect the game to be such a success, so when Lords of Shadow was a hit, they rushed the Reverie and Resurrection DLC into development.

"We never planned to do DLC, so we ended up doing DLC after the fact and in hindsight that was a mistake," producer Dave Cox explained. "It was rushed. We had to rush it to market."

"The problem was that the game's success caught everyone by surprise,” Cox added. It caught senior management by surprise and they wanted us to do DLC.”

"When you have success there's pressure on you to bring something else to market very quickly. And I think it was wrong of us to do that."

As a result of that misstep, Cox says that should Konami release any DLC for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, it will be planned from the start.

"We enriched the story that we wanted to tell, but if we were going to do DLC again it would have to be planned right from the get go," said Cox.

"And it wouldn't be something that would try to build upon an ending - it would be something that's perhaps a side story that enriches the original story. If we were going to do DLC again, it would be something much more carefully considered."

'As a result of that mistep, Cox says should Konami release any DLC for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, it will be planned from the start'

hahaha Did anyone else think he was going to say there would be no DLC and they would purely concentrate on the content of the original release?

Doesn't make any sense, IF they do DLC, they'll plan it from the start? Hasn't the sequel already started development? So surely he should know that already?

I think he's just trying to reassure fans, while also not announcing anything that isn't ready to be announced. Hence the tangled logic.

Good decision. If the game is successful they release a dlc if not then no dlc. Of course they plan ahead what kind of content it would be. Makes sense to me at all

@10 I don't think it's comparable to PS2 games, but take our word for it that's it good (but I found some of the achievements quite hard).

Except... I liked the DLC. I got them on sale, though. I would never have bought them for $10 apiece. Being rushed shows, but they were still fun, for me.

As for planning the DLC from the get-go, go ahead, but don't MAKE IT ahead of time. Start making it AFTER you finish the game. If you make it from the start, then you may as well just add it to the game and not have it be DLC. Or at least don't be like Capcom and put it on the disc.

@#7 - I loved the game. I'm stoked for the sequel and the 3DS midquel.

I'd say Amazon would be your best bet for a good deal, but it depends. I got it for Christmas, so I can't help on that end. Got it from BestBuy. Came with a free copy of Symphony of the Night.

@#4 - The first DLC is maybe 2 hours long, has 3 parts, no boss fights, lots of puzzles and fighting, though. And you get to play as Laura for two bits which is cool on easier modes, and sucks on harder modes.

Also has a few collectibles and some tough trials.

I had a lot of fun with it, but I don't think it was worth $10, but I wouldn't say it was rubbish, if you loved the main game.

You get more value out of the first DLC than the 2nd, though. It's two parts, easy trials, no collectibles, and they are essentially just a boss fight and then a harder version of the same fight, and a tiny bit of puzzle/platforming leading into it.

Lots of people bitch about the difficulty of the boss in the 2nd DLC, but I honestly had no trouble with it and I was having difficulty fighting a group of generic enemies on Paladin on the first DLC. I also hadn't played the game in a year and was rusty as hell. I beat the Boss on Paladin in about an hour, having only previously fought it twice on Squire.

The main game was fantastic, I'll split my opinion on the DLC though and say I though Reverie was pretty good and worth a play, but Resurrection was pretty poor. Looking forward to the sequel.

I would pay a good deal of MSP for a large-scale expansion for LOS or the sequel, even. The game was fantastic. I was really excited for DLC. It was good DLC even. It wasn't stellar. The missing narration and the difference in cut scene choice was awkward. It felt like an afterthought from a critical view, but the actual gameplay was good and fun just like the main game.

Guess its a good thing I got it when it was on sale if they think it was a mistake. I loved the main game, but haven't tried the DLC yet.

Loved the first game, one of the most underated games of 2010 I think! Probably one of the best looking games ive ever played, often found myself stopping to admire the view in quite a lot of locations!

But have to agree, the DLCs where a bit of a let down, although i was still happy to pay for them as it meant more Gabriel and more Castlevania! Have to say that last boss was a challenge on the hardest difficulty!

Is that why instead of making cutscenes all we got were crudely drawn pictures with voice-overs? It makes me wonder if they're going to be considered canon now..

We were so surprised that a game with the title CASTLEVANIA sold well that we actually had to create downloadable content AFTER verifying that people would buy it. Wow!

The whole concept of DLC at this point is bullshit. Plan for DLC in advance? if you know your going to release it, put it in the damn game. if the game is an unexpected hit take your time to support it & release GOOD DLC, not "OH we had pressure to rush out shit, not our fault."

The state of DLC mentality by these developers is disgusting.

So basically he is saying, they didn't plan it, so rushed to make some DLC while the game was still current. Rather than spending time making good DLC and releasing it 2 years after the game was out.

If they're willing to admit this, that should mean a big price cut. $10 each for something the developers pretty much think sucks.... How about $5 each or less?

I agree with @29, if they think it sucks why not drop the price? 20 extra bucks for something the developer doesn't like...definitely need them to be 5 a piece.

The game was amazing. The DLC was complete shit. Surprised they fessed up. Most developers would never do such a thing (looking at you, Bioware).

Had huge hopes for the DLC. But have never been more letdown in my entire 25 playing video games. Seriously. Both DLC releases were rushed pieces of garbage.

The best 3D Castlevania game ever played. Halfway through the game rite now and it kicks ass. I was thinking of getting the DLC's, but since they say its shit and cost alot, might as well wait till the price goes down

The game was pure enjoyment ... DLCs were some of the worst DLCs i have ever see in a game.
A simple acknowledgement of their fault is not enough for me. I suggest they have to give FREE DLCs of the same value in the future if they have any dignity and respect for the gamers and their fans. (see Bioware in ME 3, even if we like or not the "extended ending" at least they tried and is Free)

I liked the DLC for LoS, though I agree that it felt rushed and was out of place with the rest of the game, even if the comic book sequences were very stylish. Is also did a good of showing how that epic ending of the original game came to be. Looking forward to the next games of this series.

I enjoyed the DLC. It picked up where the original left off and gave you 2 more short chapters that expanded the story. Yeah, they didn't stick with the original style of cutscenes but I think the style they chose was great. Final scene with Laura was sad. Some people complained that Patrick Stewart was not involved with the Chapter intros but it kinda makes since considering what happened to the character in Chapter 11. DLC was great as no matter on what difficulty you play, its going to test your reflexes and make you earn that ending. If the DLC was a mistake, it was an enjoyable one.

One way or another, I won't buy it. I don't buy DLC, never did, never will. Developers need to take their heads off their asses and release actual games, complete games. I don't pay to get fragments of a product, no other media can get away with that, and it's disturbing how so much gamers don't give a damn and just buy them like there's nothing wrong with it. Guess what, on-disc DLC, day-one DLC: this is all your fault, so don't bitch about it when it happens.

Castlevania LoS is one of my favorite games. The only "issue" i would bring up with the game is the poor frame rate. Other than that, it's nigh on perfect.

As for the DLC... i'm not a fan of DLC in the first place but if they think i'm paying 1600 MS points for 2 below average quality levels they can think again. Also, if they've admitted it was a mistake (by which they mean they got greedy an it didn't turn out as profitable as they'd hoped), then reduce the price to 400 MS points each damn it!

Why don't game developers make all dlc a seperate side story. I hate the fact, like with the game borderlands 2 the dlc is very short, costs lots of money and there are only 3 achievements, there is little to no replay value to it.

It's almost a waste of time, when you could buy the game of the year edition, although i did buy a copy of this game recently and would like to play the dlc sometime.
