Microsoft only reached the agreement to bring Minecraft to XBLA one week before the game’s E3 2011 announcement, says head of Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer.
The deal was so rushed that the graphic used for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition's on-stage reveal was made the night before the conference. Indeed, such was the last-minute nature of the reveal, it caught some Microsoft employees off guard.
“Even the people inside Microsoft, as they were looking at it, were thinking, ‘What is that Minecraft thing and why are we putting it on stage?,” said Spencer.
Despite the rushed announcement, however, Microsoft is pleased by the title’s stellar performance on Xbox Live Arcade.
“And then the thing comes out and sells 2 million copies in a month,” said Spencer. “Did I know that? No. Even Mojang didn’t know that.”
