Sony Aren't The Only Ones Investing in Cloud Tech, Says Microsoft

Following yesterday’s announcement that Sony has bought cloud gaming service Gaikai, Microsoft has asserted that it too is investing in cloud tech.

'The cloud has been a key component of our strategy and a big area of investment with Xbox for many years.' said a Microsoft representative.

"Through Xbox LIVE we're serving up gaming and entertainment in the cloud to more than 40 million people," the rep added. "We're committed to delivering extraordinary entertainment experiences across devices in a uniquely connected way through Xbox, Windows Phone, Windows 8 and other popular devices, and we're looking forward to continuing to innovate in this space in the future."

Exactly how cloud technology will be implemented onto current and next-gen platforms it yet to be outlined, but the suggestion is that we’ll be able to stream games directly through our consoles. It’s an interesting prospect.

MS is very much versed in both cloud storage and video streaming, to say nothing of the leaked plans for next gen that shows they were looking at this fully two years ago. They have nothing to worry from a company like Sony who has to buy this technology instead of develop it internally.

LOL love the comments. More people commenting about a picture of a cloud rather than the article.

It is a nice cloud though.

i wouldnt mind having my games streamed and bought off the xbox, if we could get rid of them. when i complete a game i either sell it, or trade it with a friend.
i wish we could trade games on xbl like you can on steam
all the arcade games you've finished with, just trade them with someone other xbl give them for free or in exchange.

if only.

I trust the cloud about as much as I trust the company behind it, which is NOT.

Every time they release these kinda news, they really need to append "US only".

Getting my hopes up every time for nothing...

Cloud Storage : The perfect way to lose and corrupt your save files at the worst possible time.

Give me a 20TB HDD on the next Xbox instead.

Hell, they're probably happy about this. Sony's already bleeding money, so what do they do? Buy a company that makes tech that no gamer wants. Microsoft is probably happy to see Sony seemingly rush towards their grave so that they have less competition.

@19 - It would take a lot more than some bad PS3 investments to sink Sony, they do make other stuff you know, like music, dvd players, tvs, movies, etc, etc.

Either way though this cloud crap is just another sign that PC gaming will be the way forward for me, especially as I have started to lose interest in achievements altogether.

Love Sony's electronics but the POS Playstation brand has been dead to me since the PSN fiasco last year. Let's face it fanboys, Sony is going to lose and fall flat on their face next gen just as they did this one. You heard it here first!
