Assassin's Creed III
Season Pass and Substantial DLC Support For Assassin's Creed III? Plus Ubisoft Prepares to Wave Goodbye to Desmond

Plenty of Assassin’s Creed news for you today, including rumours of substantial DLC support for Assassins Creed III - including a Season Pass - and a statement from the publisher that Desmond is on his way out.

Let’s start with those DLC plans. An alleged GameStop leak has revealed “post-launch episodic content” for Assassin’s Creed III is already in development, with a dedicated team focusing on its production.

The leak (an image of a memo distributed to GameStop employees) says that a “Season Pass” is on its way.

“We’d love your continued assistance in informing pre-order customers that better value is available for those who pre-oder Assassin’s creed with the ‘Season Pass,’” says the memo.

DLC support for the Assassin’s Creed games has been relatively negligible (by current industry standards) and has largely centered on multiplayer. Let’s hope “episodic content” refers to some meaty single-player stuff.

Meanwhile, speaking at a recent Ubisoft press conference, Assassin's Creed III’s creative lead Alex Hutchinson said that the series needs to ditch Desmond Miles. Hutchinson believes that the character’s storyline has stretched on too far for many gamers.

"Things that go on too long lack resonance.” he said. “We're asking people to remember seven years worth of story. Which is like saying you were in junior high and now you're finishing college. And you need to remember what you were doing in junior high.”

"I think Desmond needs to end."

While Hutchinson doesn’t believe that the character is entirely useless, he does recognise that perhaps his time is coming to an end.

"It's more like the Twilight Zone,” said Hutchinson. “There's always a guy introducing it and he's there every episode, but each game completes its own story. Assassin's Creed one was Altair's story. Ezio has been and gone.

“You can engage with these historical stories individually without having to necessarily understand Desmond's story. But yes, we eventually do have to wrap it up."

Hutchinson also went on to compare the Assassin’s Creed series to the adventures of the Starship Enterprise. "I always pitched it to the guys on this game to think of it almost like Star Trek,” he said.

“Each game is a season... each big number is a sub-title. We're not changing the universe, but we're being given the reigns to the equivalent of [Star Trek:] The Next Generation. Yes, it's the Star Trek universe, and that has certain immutable laws and there's a base kind of tone to it, but within that you can do whatever you want."

Assassin's Creed 3 is as close to being a new IP without actually being one, he continued, saying that the latest entry is "90 per cent a new game," with a new protagonist, time period, story, setting and mechanics.

Assassin's Creed III is out on October 30th, 2012.

@1 Yeah I agree with you completely, some of my friends love the multiplayer and it does have its own charm, but I truly can't get into it myself.

AC has always been a fantastic single-player experience for me, and I'm hoping that the DLC will be more fantastic single-player expansions like 'The Da Vinci Disapperance'

@2 Brotherhood and Revelations were tests for how well received the multiplayer component would be, as well as continuing the story. They were made by a separate studio, Assassin's Creed III has been in development since the release of Assassin's Creed II. There's no milking here. Sure, the Season Pass is just like every other game nowadays, but you can't say the series is being milked if they bring something new to the table with each game.

Companies thinking about how much they can fleece their customers for 4 months before the games is released isn't good news.

Won't be getting this one, the season pass and the setting of the American civil war (of which i have 0 interest) means i won't be going near this.

I recall hearing ages ago that the series was originally going to be a trilogy with Assassin's Creed III being the final chapter for Desmond.

I honestly haven't minded the yearly releases because, overall, they've been pretty good. Sure, they could have added more quality content to Brotherhood and Revelations, but, those packages as a whole where still really quality entertainment. And the simple fact that this one has been in development since ACII came out makes me have absolutely no worries about it.

I am one of the people who actually enjoy the multiplayer in the games. But then again I actually perform well as opposed to your normal FPS where I'm lucky to maintain a .75 K/D ratio.

@5 so a "test".. So a "milk" in lehmans terms.

They would launch a test game companies wont base games off luck or people "testing" stuff when its already a full retail game.

If it was cheaper I could understand your meaning, but it launched at full whack, therefore that's a load of crap!

All the end of the post says its "we've suddenly realised Desmond has been milked a tad too much, so we will be making a new guy who is basically Desmond but with a different name"

That's it, don't get my wrong assasins creed is a great game, I would just hate for it to go down the cod route... Which recently it seems it.

I'm glad they are wrapping up Desmond's story. In Revelations, it felt like he was shoehorned in to the game and his segments were the weakest aspect of the game.

I remember in Assassin's Creed 1 and 2, I was quite excited to see what was happening outside of the Animus, but from Brotherhood onwards, I couldn't care less and felt that it was just a distraction.

revelations was a cash in, flimsy story, boring city and increasingly stale gameplay. Hopefully 3 really moves things on and the DLC isn't going to be "missing" chapters of the story like AC2's DLC

Season pas says o me stuff has been left out to be drip fed throughout the year, games like CoD get away with it, there's not much substance to a fps. BUT with a game like AC where the whole game is story driven, a season pass is just money grabbing BS.

Did assassins creed 2 need a season pass? Or did AC 1 for that matter?

AC sp is great, AC mp is crap. Ive got no problem with the game having mp, Im just bored of having to grind mp lvls to 100% the game. Also ALL AC dlc to date has been absolute turd, so if they expect me to buy a season pass Im gonna need a lot of details about all the dlcs they have planned and good evidence to show thats its not just gonna be more of the same rip off shit

I don't get why people are so upset over season passes. If you know you'll love the game before release, then get the season pass and you'll get all the DLC you'll inevitably love too, all for a lower bundle price. If you're not sure, buy the DLC individually or the pass at a later date. Nobody is forcing you to buy bundled DLC.

It's not really milking, considering it 1. Introduced completely new content with each entry (cept Revelatins. It was a crap job through and through) 2. Is at only at 5 entries in the series with AC3 compared to WTF10 for CoD and who knows how many Final Fantasy games... and 3. Ubi needed to have placeholders to compete with Halo and CoD. They wouldn't have had the funds based off of AC 1+2 alone to put the amount of effort and creativity in AC3 (Ubi's main team working on SP for a full three years!!)

@1 Revelations multiplayer was decent if I remember correctly (haven't touched it in like 8 months). My issue was with Brotherhood's. I'm glad they fixed it in Revelations but I find myself returning to the stor mode a lot more than the MP. I hope in AC III there's a much lesser focus on that and more focus on the story mode.

ME2's Cerberus Network was the best season pass. if you bought the game new the cerberus network was free. now you get sweet FA for buying it new and have to pay for the season pass. in fact now, as is the case with arkham city you only half a game unless in possession of a one time code to get the catwoman story arc. we've gone from free dlc for buying new to having to enter a one use code just to get a whole game. the worst part is that a game used to playable by a family. now only one family member has complete access unless you let them screw you out of more money per family member.

This site is full of a bunch of damn crybabies.

DLC doesn't automatically = rip-off. It doesn't always mean content is held back from your precious disc... but you idiots can't understand the concept behind some companies screwing you, and others doing it because they want to make it for people who LOVE the series.

The DLC they've had for the games so far hasn't really been any legitimate content outside of the Da Vinci DLC... and the main problem with them have been pricing, NOT content.

Why don't you see what it is before coming on here and bitching about how much Ubisoft sucks. Ubi is one of the better companies this generation... they just need to get DLC pricing structure in order (see Arctic Strike in GR:FS)

What annoys me about this is they are already developing extra stuff to charge us for and the game is still a ways out from launching. Content released alongside the game launch should be included in the game free or they should have spent more time smoothing out and improving the main game.

how can they continue the story without Desmond? They say his story is getting old, but there is almost no story for him. It would be nice if they took Desmond, made a decent story, and then you could get rid of him, but I'd at least like to know the rest of his story before they dump him.

Also, like the article suggests, I hope they add to the story with DLC and not just multiplayer.

Desmond's story has gone on too long because they refuse to advance his storyline during the games. Originally the games were about Desmond recounting his ancestors lives through the Animus. For some reason they decided to make the game about Ezio and push The original plotline to the side.

Thought the whole point of desmonds story was to have a 'this generation' assassin and to go into current times? Suppose it would be hard to do in a sense, its would be abit like prototype without the mutations, it just wouldn't work in my eyes. As for the season pass, think I'll hold out and see what it brings and if im lucky it will go to 50% off by the time I decide to get it. Still waiting for revelations dlc to get discounted as im not paying full price for that stupid Desmond Tetris style rubbish!!

I'm with the others who wish to see more of Desmond.
The only reason his story has gone on too long is because brother and rev wasted time not advancing it.
Each game should just be Desmond + the historical recount character for that game.
So I, II, and III work fine like that. But if we hadn't had those other two Ezio games we'd have gotten so much more Desmond story (or could have, I know that different people worked on them do maybe it wouldn't have sped anything up, but it's nice to hope).
I just don't want them to cut Desmond short too soon.

@36. Yeah but this one is hardly recognizable as America landscape wise etc.
Sure the story will be there, but it won't be like looking at current day land America like many current games.

On a side note:
Desmond present day creed would work well I think (I know someone further up thought it wouldn't), it would be more Hitman Esque I guess in some ways, but I think that would have been the best way to end his story.
Particularly if going forward they just find someone new to put in the animus.
Though perhaps they'll ditch the animus completely and just work through the timeline following one assassin after another..?

Assassins *Yawn* Creed. Wonder how many games they'll stretch out of this one. They managed three with the last one so they've got to go for more this time. Maybe Ubisoft will go the same route as Capcom and the dlc will be to use certain weapons. "Like the crossbow? That'll be £2.50!"

I don't really get how Desmond's story has gotten thin. I mean we barely got to play his character, other than the shit platforming levels in Revelations. I agree with 15 and hoping the finale to his story would be Desmond as the central character. So don't feed me this bullshit.

I also think season passes are big rips as well, but I will support this one if there is no MP DLC unless it is grouped with some single player content. However, I doubt that will happen so this will be the final entry of this series that I purchase and then a big final fuck you to Ubisoft for fucking up a franchise that started off so great.

I enjoyed the first game, loved the second one, but as soon as I realized they were going annual with this series I stopped. I haven't played Bloodlines or Revelations and I likely never will.

I want to play AC3, but depending on how much content is missing in the form of DLC will determine when I pick it up. I can wait till the GotY/Gold edition is released with everything. Or I will wait till it's super cheap.

I will NEVER buy another season pass though. Gears3 fucked me over and I learned my lesson.

A season pass just means that there will be a game of the year edition coming out with all the content. I'm so sick of buying a game day 1 and someone who waits 6 months gets all the content for cheaper than I payed. Spent $100 on Batman AC with the game day 1 and it's DLC. Spent $120 on MK9 with the collectors and the season pass. If I wait both games can be nabbed for $80 together. Makes me sick.

Assassin's Creed is starting to get on my nerves. I love reading the history, and exploring, and I love Desmond. Now their introducing a season pass which is bullshit, this isn't Call of Duty or Battlefield. They are also trying to hurry up and wrap up Desmond's part in the story, which is stupid because he needs to stick around and they eventually need to come to a conclusion with his story his a game dedicated to him in modern day time. He was Abstergo's key to advancing their research into taking over the world and now all of the sudden people are bitching about how his part in the series has dragged on and there's too much to remember? I'm sorry but if you have A.D.D, you're in the wrong genre of gaming and have no business playing a semi-fictional history based game which requires a deep and long term commitment. They are effectively ruining the series little by little just like everyone else is doing, UBI is just a bit behind.

I agree. I was going to mention Desmond in my previous post, but got so pissed about the season pass. The way I see it, Desmond is the main character of the franchise not the game. Each game has it's hero, Altair, Ezio, now Conner, but Desmond ties them all together. Closing on Desmond is basically closing on the series itself. I feel that eventually there should be a game where it's present time and Desmond is the hero. After he has learned all his skills from all his ancestors through the bleeding effect. It seems that Ubisoft is forgetting what made the first game so special, and are about to bleed their own series dry with iterations. I do hope that if they make another game it's not a story about a past hero, I thought that Brotherhood added cool mechanics, but dragged on Ezio's story, and Revelations felt like a rushed mess. I love AC and I think Desmond truly holds the story together and keeps the whole ancestry storyline in play.

Remove Desmond = Removing Core of the story.

I'll get this season pass if it's primarily single player stuff but if it's gonna be like 2 single player episodes and 27 shitty mp maps you can count me out

Not gonna get the season pass even tho I love AC. The main reason is that it will most likely include MP maps, wich I dont like..

(0) Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Report Comment bout to just pull out the nes...the games were cheaper, some were more fun.

i know theres no MP, but then i dont have to worry about DLCs or online passes, or hacker/modders.

at least with NES games, ALL the game came as a whole game in one package. not as a partial game, then other parts released thru out the year, that you have to purchase and are only to play if your online. if fans wanted more, they made a part II, once the first game was completely run its course. not every season!

this whole "payin $60, for an alright to somewhat decent game and then wait a week and the rest of it is released (if not on the same day sometimes) via DLC. (that is also not free)" is getting really rediculous.

ive been gaming since 2600. and if i would have known that video games would have evolved from "a good old fashioned time, that all was needed was you and a few quarters and friends" to "hurry up beat the storyline in under 3 hours, play MP for a few months till new maps are released at the same time the next installment of the game is released...all for about $120 a game."

i never would have picked up that wheel-paddle and joystick.....

sad day for video games....sad era....i know the video game companies dont care about their customers any more. but can we as customers at least still try to care about the game....the REAL games!

As long as they give Desmond a really great ending, then I can go with it, but his roll in Revelations was so minimal and sub-par, that I hardly cared about him in that game. I never got why so many people didn't care for Desmond... :/

Dude, the Desmond arc is what I go for. I loved the crap out of Ezio, yes, but I want to know what's happening NOW, with Desmond's life. If they promise to wrap that up here (like I freaking THOUGHT 3 was supposed to...) then I can live with it. But if we get this half-assed, "Oops, well, there's him, but now we need to tell this OTHER story about someone else FROM THE SAME TIME," I'm gonna be pissed.

Also, he's got his numbers wrong. I'm about to graduate college, and 7 years ago I was still in High School. So, for one, got your years off, buddy, and two, don't degrade me. I can handle remembering that much stuff. I'm not that freakin' stupid.

I like how the game incorporates the present day with the past. If future games are all in the past, with no connection to anything else, I won't be buying them.

Don,t get me wrong on itself season passes are a great way to expand your overall gameplay experince with a game, and thus as its mainly should include all the future release DLC it always cost a heavy amounth of MS points. That woudn,t be so bad if this realy was the case, sadly enough we been proven wrong a few times, i just give the example Saints Row 3, where a call was made to fans to buy that season pass so you would get all the great DLC for a..Half Price!!? In reality however this only applied to some DLC but not the extra mission packs or so. So what i,m saying is if one is buying a season pass for lets say 2100 or more MS Points he or she should at least get all the DLC that is released and not just half of it otherwise why buy a big season pass for alot of MS Points and after you still have to spend even more points to get the DLC thats not included in the so called season pass that includes all the future DLC,s.

I thought the whole idea of Assassins creed from day one was that the series was about Desmond, how he was the chosen one and how the trilogy would ultimately close with the end of his story. Its sad to see the devs deciding to completely go back on it and instead plan to clearly milk the franchise dry.

I don't understand why they can't give the series a proper finish and then go to work on something new. That's how things used to work, I'll just lose the will power to play the games if I end up feeling that I'll never actually get closure or know how it ends because 'there'll just be another installment next year'.

I don't understand why some people don't like the season pass? If you plan on buying all DLC, you get it cheaper. If not, well, you don't have to buy it. SR3 is the ONLY game I've ever played where the seaspm pass didn't actually save you more than $2.

It seems like you whatever the idea of this game being in America. Like #38 said its colonial America.
I do however agree with the game should be in a different country and could use a different plot. They should make a AC game based on the comic book.
I do not like the idea of removing Desmond in AC 3, only reason he seems over used is because of Brotherhood and Revelations.

LMAO @ all the people saying "thank god Desmond's gone". He's still in AC3 you fools. If he wasn't, then this game would just be a clusterfuck. If anything, we haven't seen enough of Desmond.

I remember back in the day when you bought a game, and all the multiplayer stuff and bonuses were unlocked by doing crazy stuff within the game. Some games even required MP to be unlocked. These days they charge extra money for the same exact stuff, like seriously?

Seems like season passes are unfortunately becoming the norm these days.

I think a good step in the right direction is to actually include the season pass in the limited/special editions of said games.

I have no problem with a season pass, so long as it's all for SINGLEPLAYER content, with achievements. Decent singleplayer content too, not just a mission or two and a new weapon or two. I mean like full blown singleplayer DLC. The multiplayer is fun, I guess. I could play Wanted any day of the week in ACB especially. But less content for an already decent multiplayer would fit my bill. And don't kill off Desmond... storyline is finally getting somewhere and you wanna smite him. T_T

I SWEAR i have never seen people complain as much as i do on this site . On every freaking news update on here most of the comments are complaining . Its something i will never understand . I mean if its about a game series you dont like dont even look at the article . if its about dlc and you feel they are ripping you off with dlc then dont by the freaking dlc . I dont see how this is so hard . Im not even a huge gamer im more into other things but yet you supposed "expert gamers" must not understand how much work goes into making a game . If developers want to change extra for extra content they have every right to do so . Dont like it ??? well no one is making you buy it or complain . While not everyone on this site is like this i still stick to my comment about NEVER seeing a site with so much complaining

This is exactly why I hooked up my Wii and started playing my old Gamecube games because I'm sick of blowing sixty bucks + with future dlc and going through the main game in little more than a day later and then being ripped off with 5 hr dlc. Only a few high quality games deserve the amount of money that we put into them. It used to be you pay for a fifty-sixty dollar game play through the main game and then have several extra things to do and through that time spend you unlock bonuses. As where now you put ten to fifteen bucks into their pocket to get things that should have came in the game or been a free add-on.

My case and point

They can only fit so much on the disc... ever think of that? Also, love how this is the first game in America, with major DLC support, that is going to wrap up the entire series and you idiots are complaining about all of it like little kids who don't want to touch the cabbage. Get over it. 5 entries isn't much, it isn't New York, and no one's forcing you to buy any of it. Got complaints? Cry to mommy, do some research as to WHY or HOW something is happening, THEN comment. You're all a bunch of crybabies.

time to end desmond's story... ???? i was kinda hoping this was all building towards a big desmond only game,, an assassin story with desmond hoping from building to building, taking out underlings on his way to a big final showdown .... had no idea they were so sick of desmond even while they were churning out the past few AC games

Season pass is a big disappointment, my tip never go for them unless you are die hard and huge fan of the series, They are never worth it in my opinion

SR 3 & GOW 3 are huge examples of that. MK season wasn't that bad but it's because I loved the game

Season Pass = no confidence in the DLC. You may save a few bucks, but you're prepaying for shit that you don't even own yet, and could be absolute garbage. They do this season pass crap to guarantee revenue, because they don't really believe they'll make their money otherwise. I was a sucker for the Gears 3 season pass, and 2 of the DLC's were crap. Never again. The news of the season pass and mp are really turning me off. AC is a single player game, and should stay that way. The MP is absolute crap too. Shitty servers, people not playing as a team, constant lag...what a joke.

Maybe they should actually do something with Desmond first before talking about tossing him. People are tired of him? Thats kinda what happens when you milk a franchise with yearly installments for the cash.. And Season passes are just another crappy standard for gaming companies thats starting to catch on and lets them put less effort into their content for even more $, like online passes, and the hike from 800 MSP -> 1200 for marketplace content. Why work hard if they already have our money.

Assassins Creed with MP? Fail.
Assassins Creed with SP? Fail. (Season Pass)
Assassins Creed with Single player? Win....

Every assassins creed after the 2nd were crap imo, number 1 and 2 brilliant but hey well Ubisoft congratulations for ruining a good game franchise.

I have no problem playing an Assassins Creed game without Desmond. I'm 70% through Brotherhood and still have to play Revelations and so far I have no strong feelings toward him.
