Plenty of Assassin’s Creed news for you today, including rumours of substantial DLC support for Assassins Creed III - including a Season Pass - and a statement from the publisher that Desmond is on his way out.

Let’s start with those DLC plans. An alleged GameStop leak has revealed “post-launch episodic content” for Assassin’s Creed III is already in development, with a dedicated team focusing on its production.

The leak (an image of a memo distributed to GameStop employees) says that a “Season Pass” is on its way.

“We’d love your continued assistance in informing pre-order customers that better value is available for those who pre-oder Assassin’s creed with the ‘Season Pass,’” says the memo.

DLC support for the Assassin’s Creed games has been relatively negligible (by current industry standards) and has largely centered on multiplayer. Let’s hope “episodic content” refers to some meaty single-player stuff.

Meanwhile, speaking at a recent Ubisoft press conference, Assassin's Creed III’s creative lead Alex Hutchinson said that the series needs to ditch Desmond Miles. Hutchinson believes that the character’s storyline has stretched on too far for many gamers.

"Things that go on too long lack resonance.” he said. “We're asking people to remember seven years worth of story. Which is like saying you were in junior high and now you're finishing college. And you need to remember what you were doing in junior high.”

"I think Desmond needs to end."

While Hutchinson doesn’t believe that the character is entirely useless, he does recognise that perhaps his time is coming to an end.

"It's more like the Twilight Zone,” said Hutchinson. “There's always a guy introducing it and he's there every episode, but each game completes its own story. Assassin's Creed one was Altair's story. Ezio has been and gone.

“You can engage with these historical stories individually without having to necessarily understand Desmond's story. But yes, we eventually do have to wrap it up."

Hutchinson also went on to compare the Assassin’s Creed series to the adventures of the Starship Enterprise. "I always pitched it to the guys on this game to think of it almost like Star Trek,” he said.

“Each game is a season... each big number is a sub-title. We're not changing the universe, but we're being given the reigns to the equivalent of [Star Trek:] The Next Generation. Yes, it's the Star Trek universe, and that has certain immutable laws and there's a base kind of tone to it, but within that you can do whatever you want."

Assassin's Creed 3 is as close to being a new IP without actually being one, he continued, saying that the latest entry is "90 per cent a new game," with a new protagonist, time period, story, setting and mechanics.

Assassin's Creed III is out on October 30th, 2012.
