Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Splinter Cell: Blacklist Developer Video Answers Your Stealth-Related Queries

Ubisoft has today released a new developer video for Splinter Cell: Blacklist, affirming that despite the game's core gameplay mechanic of 'killing in motion' showcased in the debut trailers during E3 2012, stealth will still very much play an integral role in Sam Fisher's latest outing.

In fact, Creative Director, Maxime Beland talks about being able to adopt the 'Ghost' playstyle. That is getting in and getting out of a mission completely undetected, using your gadgets and distraction techniques to infiltrate and leave nary a trace that you were ever there. Like a ghost.

You can then hit Ubisoft up with your own definition of the Ghost playstyle. Check out the ComDev video out below to find out more about Splinter Cell: Blacklist's stealth, then prepare for the game's release in spring 2013. Read our first look preview for more on Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

I just hope they don't screw this up... Splinter Cell Conviction controlled great, but in the Blacklist demo I haven't seen a shadow to hide in.

*crosses fingers* No-kill cheevo, no-kill cheevo... c'mon Ubi, no-kill cheevo...

I love Conviction, but there was definitely something missing on the stealth front.

Them videos are still about as mobile-friendly as 0800 numbers. In fact, I lie, at least 0800 numbers work. If it's that community developer video though on the Splinter Cell Facebook page, I think it might just be a community-driven thing as opposed to actual gameplay mechanics. Still, if I'm wrong (and I hope I am), this might actually mean there's hope for Blacklist after all. Fingers crossed for Michael Ironside VO DLC too.

Ironside has chosen not to do the voice. The developer cant be blamed for that.

Sam is de-aged to stay relevant, who wants to play as an old man?? And Ironside is still involved in the game, who cares if he's the voice or not? The new guy was picked by Ironside, so you know what? That's good enough for me. It's not like Ubi kicked him to the curb or anything, isn't he a producer? They're refreshing the series. This isn't even the first time they've done it, Fisher has been de-aged before, they're just being more obvious this time. Timeless characters need reinvention, like Batman and the like.

@9 That's disappointing. Can you point to where he said this? I'd be interested to read or listen or whatever.

@10 Not totaly true to all those that played Assassins Creed Revelations, there you played an much older Enzio and inbetween an very old Altair ;)
But agreed most rather play a younger dude in games.
About this vid and what he said i hope they kinda go back abit to what the older splinter cell gamers where all about stealth and try to get thru a level without beeing seen or so.
I do understand however that the majority of gamers these days not huge fans of stealth or taking their times to make it thru a level and watch the enemies patrol routes and then make your move.
Its this why splinter cell has evolved to what it was in conviction to make it more open to a wider gamergroup. I always enjoyed the spinter cell series and hopefully blacklist is far better then conviction because that had its moments def all those challenges and stuff, i rather would see some sort of upgrade ability for your gear, then some lame challenges about how many guys killed this or that way.

Just please please let us move bodies again. What was with that shit in Conviction. I was able to hide bodies for 4 games and then poof, ability gone.

And personally I hope it turns out to be a protege of Sam Fisher. Or that Sam Fisher turns out to be just the codename the primary Splinter Cell operates under.

Ironside made Sam, yes. But don't you think that it's kind of pathetic that some of you outright won't buy the game because he doesn't want to voice Sam anymore? Do you know how old the guy is getting? Too fucking right he wants to stop doing it.

It's like saying you got into Splinter Cell in the first place because you got a hardon from his voice. I completely understand it won't feel as immersive without his voice behind Sam but come on. I'd feel heart broken if David Hayter didn't voice Snake in Metal Gear Solid 5, but I love the franchise and would buy the game regardless.

Games are about enjoyment and having fun. People seem to forget that nowadays and honestly, I feel sorry for those people who make gaming a commitment rather than a hobby. And yes, I know this is an achievement site but I come here for game related news, like a lot of people.

I dont see why they couldnt just put fisher in as the boss, like lambert from 1 and 2. He would give you mission briefings and stuff and you played a new guy, it would give a reason to start a totally new story and a character they could take in a different direction!

@ 14 because this is the story of Sam Fisher, if you talk about splinter cell you're talking about Sam Fisher. they both go hand to hand.

This is not about his personal vendetta either, this is the story of the perfect spy, someone whom always finish the job without being seen.

As someone said before to wait for the right moment to make your move, analyse the environment, the foes, their path, create a path based in the timing of the patrols, etc.

Couldn't agree more. I'm sure half of the people complaining about Ironside didn't even know the actors name before the E3 demo surfaced with some one else's voice.

Since Sam Fisher looks younger and is voiced by another actor, they should have just went the BOURNE LEGACY route and said that Sam Fisher was just a code name. That would mean that the younger looking Sam with another voice could be Sam Fisher(Michael Ironside's)protoge.

"Man, that game's hard. I played the first map and I stopped. It was too difficult." - Max Beland in interview about the difficulty of stealth in the series before Conviction.

Thank you for that link. I liked Conviction, but the whole time I held out hope it was just them adjusting to the new style and come sequel time they'd reintroduce some stealthier elements. Now I see that was rather naive... I wondered why some NeoGaffers were so vitriolic over Conviction, but I just assumed it was NeoGAF being NeoGAF. I mean, I still enjoyed it, but still... I really hope others on the team are hearing fan feedback and convinced whoever to let them work in more *optional* stealth at least... I'm no longer optimistic on stealth though. Poo.

Rather pathetic attempt to get their fan base back. Not buying it for a second. Based on what we've SEEN, this game looks to have LESS stealth than Conviction, not more.

People complaining about no Ironside are marginally overreacting, I agree, but making Sam younger makes no sense whatsoever. @10 : To say "they've de-aged him before" is total bullshit. The only time that happened was in Conviction for the Iraq mission.

Like someone has already said, Splinter Cell is the story of Sam Fisher and if they want to continue the franchise, keep his age or make a new franchise with a new protagonist. Blacklist looks like a sellout attempt for easy cash, just like ACR. Ubi have been shitting games out a dime a dozen recently and even with their key franchises. I'm a fan of hard, no help stealth because more than anything else, it's a judgement and "holding your nerve" experience.

The "Stealth Action" in Conviction was a fairly good idea, but it didn't feel very Splinter Cell. A great game in it's own right but it would've been better as a spinoff with the new mechanics. The revelations about (totally remodelled) Grim and ("treacherous") Lambert felt like a massive letdown. We did everything we could to save Lambert in Double Agent after he'd been your boss for three games and then he orchestrated the fake "death" of Sam's own daughter. Talk about bullshit.

If Ubisoft want to experiment, they should set up the ground work by creating an offshoot franchise. Sam Fisher is not a late 20's/early 30's ninja Neo ripoff, and if that's what Blacklist is, then this game is in mine.

@21 You're pulling that comment out of context:
"The more we were talking to gamers and the more we were talking to the internal Ubisoft people, what came out was the fantasy of playing Splinter Cell, the fantasy of light and shadows, the fantasy of gadgets and Sam Fisher, the elite stealth agent. People want to be that guy. But what was coming up all the time was, 'Man, that game's hard. I played the first map and I stopped. It was too difficult.' - Max Beland in interview about the difficulty of stealth in the series before Conviction" So not his words.

Anway, I really hope they add more stealth features and keep the character's agility of Conviction. While Conviction wasn't a real SplinterCell game, it still felt like you were a predator.
Still playing Chaos Theory to this day, love the stealth (imo the best there is), but sometimes I hate it that Sam moves a bit too slow :>

I really hope it isnt being done like MGS4 was. Sure you CAN play it ghosting but its tough to handicap yourself like that when you have guns and armor so strong that you can run around shooting like Master Chief and still do fine. Would love to see them go back to the way Chaos Theory was as it was, to me, the best in the series.

How pathetic. You're going miss out on what looks like a great game just because they've HAD to change to voice actor? I love Ironside as much as the next person, and it will take some getting used to, but I love Splinter Cell more and won't miss out on a game just because something has changed.

@24 I was going by the choice quotes linked, I didn't remove the context personally or anything. =P

@23 Yeah, Sam just dyed his hair, had facial reconstruction and started eating his veggies, totally in-universe I'm sure. They didn't visibly change his face and de-age him at all after the first few games. Whatever you say. All the posts on forums years ago debating about the differing approach to Snake and Fisher's ages, like, never happened. I hallucinated them.

After Lambert died, I didn't give a shit about the other character's voice actors. The only time I have ever cared about a change of voice in SC was when the ALLSTATE guy voiced Lambert in Pandora Tomorrow!!! It was awful!!! But anyway, Sam's new voice actor is fine with me cause I really don't care.
