Fallout 4 to be Set in Boston?
Written Monday, August 20, 2012 By Lee Bradley

More headlines with question marks on the end. This one's all about Fallout 4 and an alleged Massachusetts Institute of Technology student who claims that the game will be set in Boston.

“The rumors are true, Fallout 4 will take place in Boston,” said the anonymous tipster on Reddit. “In case you haven’t heard, Bethesda has recently been scoping out and researching Boston. They also have a strong connection to MIT. I may or may not be an MIT employee. But that’s really all I can say for fear of losing my job.”

He added, “Apologies for the vagueness of this post. It’s not just my job that worries me, but also getting the f**k sued out of me. Bethesda’s contracts are basically full-proof [sic] so if they were to discover who I am, or rather, who I got this information from, a few people including myself could get into a lot of trouble.”

Another Reddit user has supported the claim, saying, “I’ve been hearing reports from people in the Boston area, where my fellow Fallout-obsessed brother lives, that Bethesda has been in the Boston area doing initial research for Fallout 4. It’s highly speculative, but the main rumors surround Bethesda’s connection to “The Institute”, or what we call the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or M.I.T.”

All very speculative indeed. We’ll see if it turns out to be true.

I saw the Reddit thread a couple days ago and thinking the thing was odd. Normally the community is all up in arms for proof, but they just kind of accepted it.

Please gotta be!! Want Fallout 4 so much. Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim is fantastic Bethesda's first-person action/shooter rpg. I hope Fallout 4 coming later in 2013, somewhere next generation or even in 2014 for this generation either.

I believe that enemy is from Fallout 3's DLC - Point Lookout, still worth picking up if you haven't played it yet. :)

Would be nice if Bethesda released it as bug free as possible. I'd rather wait longer for a more polished game, than one that needs multiple patches before it's playable.

Because your mistake is a direct consequence of not reading the article properly?
It clearly says they're doing 'Initial research'. What makes you think they're releasing images, especially when it hasn't been announced, or likely developed.

Fallout 4 would be a great incentive to get the next-gen consoles, or at least I'm sure that's what they're thinking up at Microsoft and Sony.

I'm ready for more Fallout anytime, but I'd really appreciate it if they added Coop :/ (Things would be much more fun in the Wastelands with a partner...)

Hmm. A friend pointed something out to me.
Boston is on the East Coast of the US correct?
In Fallout 2 it was revealed the East Coast took the most bombs, rendering it entirely uninhabitable. So I have doubts about this. Unless Bethesda are just saying fuck you to the History laid out by Black Isle.
Colour me dubious.

@31 DC being the capital, I think that's as bombed as a city will get in Fallout. And even though Fallout 3 looks like it takes place 5 minutes after the bombs dropped instead of 200 years, Beth made it habitable (even a bit too much with the amount of raiders).

YES!!! Fallout 3 was one of my favorite games. I don't know why, but I just wasn't able to get into New Vegas despite it being so similar. I guess the location is a big factor. I loved that most everywhere you go in Fallout 3 had some known monument or something.

To those complaining about New Vegas, at launch (as has been mentioned) it was unplayable with the amount of glitches but when the ultimate edition came out I rebought it, and it's much more playable and is generally great fun, though not quite as a good as F/O 3 imho.

Well Fallout 3 isn't TRULY Canon. It has MANY conflict ions to the earlier Fallouts. One being how the Brotherhood of Steel's motives changed. In the originals they were as bad as the Enclave and keep to themselves helping nobody. In 3 they work with others.
Another one is that the Enclave were eradicated in Fallout 2.
It's kinda between a Reboot and a non Cannon game in a sense.
Fallout New Vegas IS cannon as it was made by a team of Ex, Black Isle Employees who now work for Obsidian.
THAT is a direct Sequel to 2.
Fallout 3 is an unknown in the series. But it was revealed that the ENTIRE east coast was bombed to hell and should be uninhabitable.

I just wish it would be made by Obsidian. They actually knew how to make a fallout game (seeing as many of them made the original two masterpieces) and not just TES with guns. I still really enjoyed 3 but after the success of skyrim, I just know that that little ****er Todd Howard is going to try to give us skyrim with guns.

It will probably be mostly shooter with some watered down, RPG lite mechanics and yet critics will still think it qualifies as an action RPG-hell the SPECIAL will probably be replaced with something like skyrims health, magika and stamina bars.

It will have 0% consequence. I mean these are the guys that made a game where you can kill half a town and waltz back in in a few days like nothing happened, where you can just throw a little cash at a guard and erase any crime whatsoever, where you can assassinate the goddamn emperor and then fight with the imperials in the civil war, where you can save the world from alduin and go back to being an average joe again (that, people, is why NV didn't let you play after the ending: so your actions actually mattered).

The story will probably be some good v evil, black and white story where we have no choice in who we side with. Oh and the Enclave will be the baddies again and the player gets to help the whiter than white brotherhood of steel win with a conveniently placed optimus prime robot again.

@39 The Brotherhood of Steel in the East Coast are a splinter faction. As you may not know, the BoS has different chapters. The members of the Core Region BoS still keep to themselves and are pretty much assholes when it comes to helping others. The East Coast chapter was sent to retrieve tech. When they got there, they found Liberty Prime and were told to set a permanent base. Over time, Lyons began slowly changing the purpose of the mission, and started helping the people of the Capital Wasteland. It's not non-canon and it's definetely not a reboot. Bethesda just screwed up the Enclave, not in the sense that it's not canon, but in a sense that it doesn't make any sense at all. It's all explained in Fallout 3, everything that was established in the previous games and SUPPOSEDLY (bear that in mind) changed.

Still agree that New Vegas is the true Fallout 3, but Fallout 3 exists, and since the IP belongs to Bethesda, they're the ones that decide what's canon.

Boston??? Eww... I could barely sit through The Departed because of those horrible accents. I'll still buy it twice wherever it's set, I love Fallout and love Bethesda. Favorite company in the industry.

OH, and why does everyone believe this anyway? An MIT employee said "full proof"?? Come on, was it the janitor? Was he drunk? This has to be a joke.

@51-Most "purists" think the best case scenario in regards to future installments would be if Beth stayed east coast and Obsidian (if they get another chance) stay west coast. That way beth can make their own story's and not have them clash with the established canon (not that FO3 was completely in-keeping with the series canon).

If beth felt the need to do a game on the west coast, that would just be...indescribably...just wrong. Trespassing on sacred ground, desecrating holy relics. I don't want to think about it.

It's hard to pick a Location for games like fallout being that there is legal issues and Copyrighting. Personally I'm a little hesitant to thumb up Boston as the Fallout that will happen after if people claim there ripping off assassins creed 3, its clear there looking for a new and creative land to bring to our tv sets but I just hope that they can bring there A game and Resigned the game instead of reusing fallout 3's base and changing the skin. I love the series but I want to see Something New! Like say the ability to front caps to repair select buildings like fronting cash to clear away rubble and such. Not to be a downer but the world was nuked say 200 years ago if memory serves, and it seems everyone forgot how to use or even make a broom! It does take away from the Apocalyptic feel if everything's clean but at least let us fix up some buildings in key places like Megaton! It would make the game feel more personal.

#49 Well sometime hard to fix everything because game is open world so can be quite difficult to find random bugs lay somewhere. Also Bethesda mention just after game launched that they gonna release update patches into many months because they want support it and help game getting better to keep players more happy or keep them enjoy more time in Skyrim. :)

@64 yes but I'd rather them take time and fix everything than deal with major bugs like not being able to complete the companions guild. I think they're just rushing out an incomplete product and thinking to themselves it is okay because we can just patch it later.

I loved fallout 3, but I loathe New Vegas. in 3 you could go days with needing to repair something, NV y ou couldnt go 2 hours without your weapon becoming useless. Hell you weren't even allowed to beat the game if you played melee only and on your own side because the NCR would obliterate you. Story was better in New Vegas but it lacked the playability that three have.....but the biggest problem with both fallouts is that there is only a select few characters that are likable 98% of ch

I hope FO4 is more like New Vegas than FO3, they were both great but New Vegas was more of an RPG. You could choose 4 different factions to side with for the main quest, instead of just the BoS. It also had some great new additions like weapon mods, reputation, and way more quests than FO3. Boston would be a pretty cool place, but Bethesda can make anywhere a fun setting so I really look forward to the next game of the series!

Does it really matter where it's supposed to be set?

Rubble is rubble.

New Vegas didn't feel very Vegas-y to me, it felt like the desert with a crappy tourist strip in the middle of it. Fallout 3 felt like DC, when I was near a landmark for five minutes, the rest of the time it felt like I was walking around subway tunnels with a flashlight bolted to my wrist.

Personally I hope they are just scoping MIT to get ideas for more psudo future tech and/or for a possible future DLC (though that seem unlikely at this stage) or something other than the main location (maybe like the DLC you go to a spot on the map to go to the ruins or rebuilt area of MIT, or maybe MIT itself is actually the common wealth) because I for one desperately want them to use NYC as the location.

I liked fallout 3 more for the story and quests, but new Vegas for everything else, like weaponry, modifications, caravan games, etc.

I completely agree, wayyyy too many subway tunnels for 3, and Vegas was this little patch among this huge dry desert, which I understand it IS in Nevada, but still :P

That's awesome news, as long as it doesn't feel rushed like NV did I'm completely happy.

Both "Fallout 3" and "Fallout: New Vegas" are available in GAME OF THE YEAR editions. If you haven't played either one, that is the best way to pick-up the game(s) and save some money, as both packages contain ALL the DLC!

I hope Amazon has another "Survival Edition" for Fallout 4. The Fallout 3 Survival Edition with the "Collector's Edition" of the game - PLUS the Pip-Boy 3000 clock is AWESOME (okay... the actual clock-portion sucks, but the item as a whole is awesome)!!!

I'm with the 'I just want Fallout 4' lot. I'm not particularly fussy on the setting, but I would like the game to be more challenging in a survival way.
I am pretty annoyed with the lack of info coming out though. I just want to know that it's coming. It's agonizing!
