Next Generation of Consoles is a "Quantum Leap Forward," Says Remedy
Written By
View author's profile

Remedy Entertainment has been talking up the power of next generation hardware, claiming that it is a “quantum leap” beyond what our current tech is capable of.

According to Remedy’s Head of Franchise Development, the next-gen is seriously impressive. And he should know, because Remedy is working on a game for the next generation of consoles as we speak.

"Right now we're working as always with a relatively small team on a next generation project," said Häkkinen. "You always ask yourself: Can the new consoles really be that much better than the old ones? Be assured: They are. It is a quantum leap forward."

Exciting stuff. Quite what the game is, Häkkinen didn’t say. Nor did he reveal what console the game is designed for. There has been plenty of talk surrounding a new Alan Wake title, however, so don’t count that one out just yet.

Given how infinitely powerful modern pc hardware is over the 7 year old 360 hardware (which was 1-2 years old at time of release as it was) its no surprise.Modern pc games are actually mindblowing with real hardware,at real resolutions

"Can the new consoles really be that much better than the old ones?"

Lol isn't the answer a given. There is very little to be impressed about with the hardware in them. Especially with the advances pc gaming hardware was already making years ago when they were launched.

Yeah, this is the first time I think it's completely viable to skip a major console in lieu of primarily gaming on a PC. I've owned 3 consoles every since working in my first burger joint at 15... but it's gotten to the point where there just aren't enough exclusives to justify owning all 3.

Beyond that? If the Wii U can get the 3rd party support I think it can? My Xbox days will be over, and I'll play all the 1st Party Xbox games on the PC.

Consumers are more savvy then they used to be, and I won't drop another 500 bucks on a console for PC-equivalent graphics and some Xbox Live features I don't really need.

Oh, and stop ruining Fable. That is all.

If it is going to be a "quantum leap" forward then I imagine the next gen consoles will come with a very hefty price tag and if that's the case then why would I spend that kind of money on the next xbox rather than a pc where the games are cheaper, I can use mods and not be subjected to things like dashboard updates or MS trying (failing) to make everything "better with kinect"?

the next gen consoles will cost 4,000.00cnd. this is because of all the tech that will be needed. no need for a kinect2. the best thing to do now is to go VR. use a VR headset. would elliminate space issues that kinect has. which is why kinect2 would be built into the system. the next gens need to do something bold. in order for me to go next gen. its going to have to be better than just the graphics. also going cloud & streaming everything makes more sense. thus getting rid of optic lasers & hard drives. which will free up space issues. but knowing MS it'll be a hybred of streaming & hard drive. i think discs will become more obsoulete. as market shows more sales for digital downloads. sony needs to turn things around soon too. its gonna have to be very impressive to warrent a purchase for me. i'm happy with my 360 pro, 120GBHD. though space is an issue :)

well i've read some of you posting 360 is 7yrs old. however, its 10yrs old. i'm currently on my ten yr with it. the rod issue needs to be fixed too. pc gaming is good. back in the day, heck i started the whole thing! i remember the 1st cart systems. way before the pc even came out! back in the 70s & 80s consoles ruled. now its pc gaming. when you bought a cart game. it lasted till this day! i've had to replace only 2 batties from my cart games! thats dating back to the 70s! streaming, cloud & VR. will be the most important features on next gen consoles. price will be 4grand though.

Even if the consoles cost in the range of £400 at launch, that's still about half the price of a decent gaming PC.
You'll also get about 5 years life out of that console.

Seriously, if you buy a PC today for £1000, you'll probably be thinking about significant upgrades or a complete rebuilt in less than four years.

A top end PC graphics card alone can cost as much as an entire console, so seriously, if you're going to make an argument for PC gaming, don't base it on hardware prices.

I'm sure it will be a good step forward in comparison to the current generation, but I don't think that many people will be impressed by the graphics, because most know how the games looks on gaming PCs.

However, I am way more interested in how the controlling works and additional features like linking up your phone to play a "mini-version" or something else.

@22 I cannot begin to describe how retarded that post sounds. If a console ever cost $4,000, that console would flop, HARD. IMO consoles are supposed to be ways that people can play games if they don't want to buy a gaming PC. So why would anybody build a console that is about 4 times as much as a great gaming PC?

It's too soon for a new console. The current consoles already have proven what a gaming console can do. Graphics are only going to be improved a bit but that all depends on how someone is designing the game.

well there should be 6 years of advancement in terms of most hardware

then hopefully SSD's will be reasonable prices for the next gen release, so we have no spinning media at all

if we were to start talking about graphics, well the cards (or at least the chips) will have around 4x as much dedicated VRAM (GDDR5 or whatever they end up using for them) if not more

now that doesnt transfer into photo realism, but it means a lot more particle physics etc, and ragdolls, and other destructive enviroments and so on....but as this gen proved, you need to have the knowledge of the systems to make any use of it....if not, we get more generic crap, though that is what some people want CoD/BF/halo[insert # here]

i'll wait until it's been out 2 years before i jump ship to either MS / sony new systems

what we do need is a more stable base platform, so the code being handled isn't too different from system to system.... then it would be down to which hardware was best, not which is easiest to program for (like this gen has been....weak devs, weak.)

Consoles will never be 4k,expect a $399 $499 starting point across multiple sku's just like this generation.MS know's how to monetize their brand without makeing $ off the actual console.Cloud saves suck and far less than half of all xbox users even have a broadband internet connection. So cloud and streaming only are still a long ways away.I think the cost of games will go down as some of the articles I've read state that with the use of next gen game engines such as Unreal and the Cryengine you can do a lot more with less resources and man power.

As to a next gen Alan Wake,i say bring it on REMEDY.I love Alan Wake and both games that released this generation were excellent.

" I imagine the next gen consoles will come with a very hefty price tag and if that's the case then why would I spend that kind of money on the next xbox rather than a pc"

because $400 is alot cheaper than $1400, and you won't have to upgrade your xbox for 6 or 7 years

"and not be subjected to things like dashboard updates"

instead you can be subjected to forced updated on a game by game basis, and occasionally games requiring you to install the newest windows service pack and directx runtimes. your point about dashboard updates is moot and idiotic.

"because $400 is alot cheaper than $1400, and you won't have to upgrade your xbox for 6 or 7 years "

In the same sense you wont have to upgrade your pc.Your pc will be "out of date" the next year sure, but still more than capable of playing above the xbox 720 standards.Your xbox will also be out of date the same time next year but will be lacking further behind.

But you get what you pay for.

I agree with the "base code" but you can blame Sony for that one mostly with their shitty "cell" cpu that is a theorethical cpu and not a logical one.Because of that its a bitch to code for, harder than usual.Which makes porting games even harder to the ps3.Why do you think they arent using it for the ps4 (if hardware rumors are true) and entire cell production and research has been adbandoned.Games used to be made for pc and ported to consoles.

Now too many games are made for consoles and ported to pc,and pc gamers are suffering because of it. *looks at crysis 2*

When you think about it, the Xbox 360 is a lot older than what it has been available for. Why the guy is getting bashed or thumbed down is not right.

Do you think that the 2012 BMW M3 was built in 2012? Same thing would apply here. The manufacture date is always months and sometimes even a year prior to the current date.

The Xbox 360 is a lot older than what most think.

@22 Failed at math much? Xbox 360 came out in 2005, we are in the year 2012. 7 year difference.

@40 Read what number 22 said carefully, he says he is on his 10th year with it. That means he has had his 360 for 10 years which is obviously not true, since it has only been on the market for 7. Also the time it took to manufacture a system or a car is like the time it takes for us to develop inside or mother's wombs. Finally being put out on the market for sale is like the day we are born. The 360's "birthday" was in 2005 so it is 7 years old.

@24,25 lol my mistake than :)

@32 yes i did ;)

@30 the pricing of consoles would have to go up. the plus side would be. no need to upgrade like a pc does. in fact if they really push the limits. could still not be outdated in 10yrs or more. the teck that is :)

@36 most gamers do have broadband. with the trends that the pc gaming market is setting. it makes sense for the consoles to follow those trends. such things as steam for example. also cloud would store your apps. so gaming would be done on servers by said company ie ea,ms,sega, extra. as for pricing, 4 grand makes sense. the tech needed for VR,tablets, extra. would run a heafty price. :)

Im tired of people coming on an XBOX 360 site and talking about how they are going to stick to a pc , wii ,ect . First off people who say pc gaming is better, well thats your opinion , sure you might be able to make it look nicer after spending at least a few minutes tweaking all the settings , some games wont work well with certain computers and graphic cards ,ect where as with an xbox you put the damn game in and play . Pc gaming is not better neither is ps3 , xbox 360 ,ect its an opinion . But this is an xbox 360 site if you wanna talk pc go somewhere else , if you wanna talk wii go somewhere else , this is getting ridiculous .

@51 That is the main perk that outsells any bells or whistles PC gaming use to offer me. I would over the course of a game have to fuck with the settings for at least an hour or two before finally settling with what looked ok & what would allow me to play decently.

360 I come home with a new game pop it in sit down & play no bullshit required. That is why I abandoned PC gaming a long time ago & will never look back. The convenience of not having to worry about getting a game to run properly is worth more than anything the PC can offer me.

PC gaming has no place in this discussion as I feel the slight majority of console gamers simply are too happy with their consoles to even think about pc gaming. I know I could personally care less.

With that said, of course the new consoles are going to be more powerful, but I don't think it's going to be a huge leap as some may think.

I really hope that story I spotted here awhile back that said the new XBOX at least would launch at $250.00 was accurate.
