Happy Wars
Happy Wars Bringing Free-to-Play to XBLA
Written By
View author's profile

Microsoft has announced that Happy Wars, the 15 v 15 multiplayer action game revealed at last year's Tokyo Game Show, will be free to download for Xbox Live Gold members.

The platform holder has resisted the free-to-play movement up until now, but Happy Wars represents the first of what will no doubt become a growing roster of freemium modelled titles.

In the game you'll engage in “exciting castle siege and magic spell battle action for madcap free-for-all battles in fantasy world settings,” drawn in an attractive cartoony style.

Most importantly, details of the in-game purchases are yet to be revealed, beyond “lavishly rendered” in-game items made available through an item shop. It will be interesting to see how this builds.

We've discussed the worst examples of free-to-play games in a recent feature. Let's hope Happy Wars can avoid those traps.

Below you'll find a new trailer for the game. There's some fresh screens over at PlayXBLA too. Happy Wars is out in Autumn 2012.

Is this one of them "Free" games where to get anything worthwhile you have to spend a lot of money. Or is it actually free?

I'm open to trying a new type of game on 360, but I reject them already on PC, I can't see this swaying me on 360 to be honest. I'd much rather have a 10-20 hour epic story than a free to play game with no real depth. That said I'll check it out, but can't see myself playing it too much.

Judging by past XBLA experience it'll be #of cheevies for free='0'. #of cheevie points available as long as you pay for them='10,000'. Price per cheevie='more than if had bought 10 retail games'.

They have stated while you can purchase in-game items with msp they won't have much impact on the game ie those with £££ to burn can't just buy the best weapons/armour and piss all over those of us who don't have money to burn/no interest in spending money on it to get ahead faster.... Sounds like a good idea to stop people getting best stuff quick just because they have more expendable income!

I hope that it's Runescape/habbo free where you can still play properly without spending money and not that it's gameroom free because that just sucked.

Best free to play game I've got is mega run an they have made it in a way that I'd accept if the f2p model worked in a similar fashion. You play the levels an level up naturally and earn coins in each level, as you level you can buy upgrades to make the game easier etc or if your impatient an want to pay for things early you have to buy bundles of "in game cash" and the unlocks are really really expensive so you'd end up paying a lot of money just for a level a bit me thats good as I won't want to spend all that money but it also offers the option for the people who would and doesn't give anybody an unfair advantage

@14 I know what you mean. Free to download but have to purchase the arcade games individually.
I will be playing this as a pass-time game. I think this will be fun to play.
Though I think instead of these goofy puppets all the time, they should allow use of Xbox Live Avatars.

@10 Read #1's damn comment before replying.

I know what he's asking, he's asking if it's truely free, i.e. you don't have to pay to compete or to get items to allow you to progress and you only pay to get items quicker or is it going to be a 'free' game where to get anything but the basic equipment/weapons you have to pay.

@21 I'm still waiting for a decent (wouldn't mind a decent freemium style if done right) MMO for XBLA using the avatars, at least then they'll be used for something and you'll be able to show off avatar stuff which is practically worthless at the moment.

@ 1 (Since everyone else seems to be incapable of giving a simple answer.)

"Free-to-Play" means that you'll be able to download and play the game regularly (with others), and equipment will probably be free- BUT cosmetic items won't be free. So if you want to play with a "nice looking" character, you're probably have to shell out some MS points.

The only question is whether you consider an XBL Gold membership as payment for the game or not. :p

@28, cosmetic items are not the soul of "Free-to-Play."

The model usually goes like this: You can download and play the game for free. You'll get 1 or 2 maps and some standard equipment. To buy more equipment in the game (or to level up sometimes) it will cost gems or coins. You'll gain a few of these each round. However, you will always have the ability to buy more with real money. More maps will be available, also for real money.

After about 5 power-ups, you'll find getting the amount of coins you need turns into a frustrating grind. People who have invested much more time and money will make the game unplayable for those who haven't.

Oh ffs, how bloody short sighted are developers.

Free to Play will ruin console gaming if it takes off, given time. This game alone will be bad for people who play it for free, because those who put money in, will be miles ahead of them in things.

A game should not be measured by how much money you put in, but the players own skills, paying to win is a disgusting concept for developers to take on, I dread this taking off on consoles, because it'll eventualy make it's way into decent games, and ruin them.

free to play is a joke that will surely ruin gaming
I really dont get all the hype about games like this, or most xbl titles (like fez) its a joke, Ooo its pretty looking and blah blah, if I wanted to play 2d games Id bust out my snes, this is next gen gaming lets keep it that way
i want a huge budget game with hours of in depth story and sweet game play
not a shitty xbl title thats over hyped and "revolutionary" to gaming because its hand painted and 3dish
and all you part time gamers that are loving titles such as those are sending a clear msg to developers that they dont need to put alot of time and money into their games and dont need layers of depth and gameplay to sell and make alot of money
so as a hardcore gamer for 20 years thanks

@39, the reason we play and buy the arcade games, is because they are fun, artsy, risky sorts of games for the most part, a game doesn't need good graphics to be a good game, quite the oposite, look at minecraft, basic pixel graphics, yet incredibly fun, even in the demo version of the full game that the xbox curently has.

Though, free to play is still the worse thing to happen to games if it goes into main stream games.

The people who say this will ruin console gaming need to stop with their unproven speculation and their hate speech about "part-time" gamers or free-to-play gaming.

If this is done right it could be great, we will have to wait and see. Until then there's no need to get your panties in a bunch.

@39 You mentioned Fez, and then talked about developers needing to put a lot of time and money into their games so it has layers of depth and gameplay. That's exactly what Fez is, did you read anything about it or how it was made? It was basically one guy who took over 3 years to make the game. If you're going to complain about something, you really need to do better research.

Most of these XBLA titles are made by small developers who don't have large teams or lots of money, but they can still make great games and we wouldn't be seeing these games if it wasn't for XBLA, no one is forcing you to buy them. There are plenty of AAA games that release every year to keep you occupied. Btw, it's just not part time gamers that play those games, they are plenty of hardcore gamers who enjoy those games.

I really don't understand why they are pushing this because in the end the actual fundamental properties of a game will be destroyed, it's why I refuse to pay for weapon skins and mini DLC missions that should of been in the game in the first place, gaming is being ruined as we know it and this very well may be the last console cycle for me, you can only milk the consumer for so long before you lose them completely.

@44, look at the impact things like CoD made on gaming, how gamings changed since CoD took off. Theres one example of how free to play could infect other things from something that's aleady happened.

Now, take the speak a representive said about paying to releod in battlefield, how much people will get ripped off for what they buy.

The free to play model is already shown it doesn't really work in a competitive nature, why? Because just because you have more money doesn't mean you should be given every advantage.

Imagine halo4, free to play version, you would be given a basic spawn with an assault rifle, want a armor ability? £1. Want another gun? £1. Want that other armor ability now? £1. Want those maps? £1 each. ect. ect.
Before you know it, you've payed out more then the game would cost.

A players skill should never be measured in how much money they have to spend on a game, it idiotic.

@48 All that's based on your ASSUMPTIONS. That doesn't mean that's how this games free to play model will work. Until we hear more about how this games model will be used, you can stop with the fear mongering and having people imagining if things were a certain way.

@50, it doesn't matter how you look at it, there are already games that are nothing but money making machines that leave gamer's feeling robbed, I could do with finding out what these are tbh, I've only been referenced to them so far, but that will eventualy happen on consoles, if that can happen, then there will more then likely be big titles picking it up, it'll start nice and slow likely, but it'll build, and build.
You need to have fore sight, and as has been said many times, we shouldn't measure who can win, by how much money they spend on the game competetivly, thats moronic.

I will download the free version, and try it, because I plan to review it fairly, and state everything I have against free to play games in the review.

Not sure if anyone will read this but since I see arguments about FtoP games and if this one will need to be paid to play well I feel the need to chime in.

I am in the beta and have been playing it. Assuming that all that they will do when it is released is add the ability to use real money on certain things and not take away features then I can say that you will not need to do so, nor will paying give you an unfair advantage. It could eliminate some grinding and/or allow the player to use currency gained by playing on other things, but it is very far from requiring you to pay. Its actually quite a fun little game.

the creators are idiots for making it completely free. its easily worth 1600MSP . the game is fantastic . definantly worth playing. the lowest ammount you can spend on in-game items/contents is 80MSP
