Namco Bandai has revealed that Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will be coming to consoles in October.

The special edition of the game includes the Atorias of the Abyss expansion, adding over 10 hours of gameplay with new bosses, areas, enemies, equipment and NPCs.

This new chapter takes place in the middle of Dark Souls' story and ties into the larger narrative, building on the lore of Lordran.

For those that already own the game, Atorias of the Abyss will be made available as DLC through Xbox Live for 1200 MSP later this year.

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition launches on October 26th in Europe. A North American release date has yet to be revealed.

I really liked Dark Souls, but I've barely scratched the surface of the game. It just requires so much dedication to advancing even slightly, which I think is great, but I guess I've just become more of a casual player over the years.

I can only hope that they make this somehow accessable to existing characters. I have a feeling they'll expect you to start over or try it the first time on New Game+++. They're mean like that.

@5 - Basically the PC version will require you to start from the beginning, because the PC version only just came out. I will guarantee the console versions will allow you to continue from where you are, but in order to even get to the new content you will need the Lordvessel. Keeping it spoiler free for you guys so don't worry.

@11, it's hard the first time through, but you might not die once going through the game again a 2nd or 3rd time once you know enemies moves and what they do. Just be patient. It's one of the best games ever, you should buy it.

People shouldn't be dissuaded by Dark Souls' difficulty. The difficulty does not lie in the challenges you are presented with, in most cases. The difficulty lies in learning that you cannot play as recklessly and quickly as in other games. You have to calculate your movements, time your strikes, and prepare for every enemy encounter. Once you learn that principal, the game becomes much more manageable. Its still tough, no doubt, but its not impossible.

Unfortunate that those of us who own the original release have to wait until "later this year" to grab it as DLC. I was hoping they'd make it available at the same time the special edition retailed... Oh well, loads to play until then anyway. Will definitely grab it as soon as it is on the marketplace!

@24 - Your average gamer who can't handle a challenge and cries about it. Go play CoD or something, leave the big games to the big boys.

@22 - At first they wasn't going to, but as they clearly stated (several times) the game got a better reception than From thought it would. This was a way of thanking us I guess. Why are you complaining anyway? More content is a great thing, especially for a game as good as this.

@24, wow, you really mustn't of gotten very far with the game, please, go and play CoD and leave threads for good games alone.

This is honestly one of my all time favourite games, I just love it's challange, how difficult it can be when compared to the rest of the market, I've honestly really enjoyed this game, and still got allot to do on it, just advancing, little bit at a time.

A random tip to anyone, get the dragontail sword, it's bloody essential with the early to mid things.

One of the best games of the past 20 years. I was a little bit skeptical at how this would fit into such a well balanced game. But I have faith.,

Like others have said, if this has a seperate list, ill be doing it all again.

I love how the 3 idiots above me think that a game is good just because it's ridiculously difficult and takes away the fun factor. And that anyone who disagrees isn't good enough or just should stick to CoD.

"OMG! How dare you have a different opinion about this game! GO PLAY COD!"

There's no way I'm wasting so many hours of my life killing the same 15 enemies 50x before I make very little progress. I got better things to do.

@28, the dificulty is one of the things that makes it a good game, its one of the only games thats difficult to play, you don't just wad through it all, taking damage but not caring, if thats your view, then you don't like any rpg, or fantasy game in general, and it's not your genre of game.
The dificulty doesn't take away the fun factor, it adds it, skyrim, for an example just becomes a boar because of how easy it is, as an examplle from the same type of game.

Your comment gives every impression that you're views are that of just a casual gamer, as well as the way you looked at the game.

@ 28

The biggest misconception about this game is the so called "hard-as-nails difficulty."

You can beat the entire game in less than 6 hours without even being "good" at the game, so please do yourself a favor and return to CoD. It's fine to have an opinion, but you better be able to take whatever criticisms come with it- and clearly posting such a negative comment gets you more negative comments! ;)

@29 OMG you are totally right.

"its one of the only games thats difficult to play, you don't just wad through it all, taking damage but not caring, if thats your view, then you don't like any rpg, or fantasy game in general, and it's not your genre of game."

I mean this really opened my eyes. Now I keep wondering how I enjoyed a game like Dragon Age, Mass Effect or Fallout so much. OH I KNOW! Because it had a pretty damn good story, great characters, fun gameplay and decisions with consequences! Overall, a great experience. Can you say the same about Dark Souls?

And guess what, if I felt like I wasn't being challenged, I could just increase the difficulty in the options. Your comment gives every impression that you feel superior to others because you play a game most people don't have the patients or skill to play. That doesn't necessarily mean they're casual gamers dumbass.

@30 Next time you comment, make sure someone gives a f*ck.

The comments they have are completely right. Most gamers now can't handle a challenge. Years ago playing on normal felt like a decent challenge and now almost every current game feels like it holds your hand through the entire thing. I can't even play a game now without starting on hard to make it at least somewhat challenging. Dark Souls is great as it's unforgiving as hell when you make mistakes and it rewards you by learning how to overcome them. If you really don't like challenging games by all means stick to casual games, movie games, and COD.

@31 My problem is that I always say what's on my mind in a way that may be offensive, rude or troll'ish.

I could have said, "I tried this game and it really wasn't my cup of tea. Hmmm, I wonder how many people are looking forward to this edition."

Let's be honest, that's boring :P I love confrontation, discussions and trolling. I know that I'll be getting a lot of thumbs downs and negative reactions but reading some of these comments also helps me understand why some people actually enjoy this game. Don't take everything I say that seriously.

DragonAge, i can't comment on, but the other two are decent games with decent stories, if again, fairly easy games, but you've missed the point of Dark Souls completely, it doesn't need a complex story, its dungeon crawling at it's best in allot of ways, a game doesn't need a good/engaging story to be good, surprised to see the witcher2 not on there, thats a rather good story focused rpg, though twitchy combat system.

Dark souls combat system works smoothly without any issue, its fun, challanging, expansive world, rewarding, fun, it's everything a non casual gamer wants.

@ The guy who has a motorway for a name

"I love how the 3 idiots above me think that a game is good just because it's ridiculously difficult and takes away the fun factor."

Speak for yourself. I said you were clueless. Your subsequent 30 posts prove this. For the record, I THINK (opinionated prefix) the game has a steep learning curve. I DON'T THINK (there it is again) that it’s ridiculously difficult by any means.

You also need to understand the definition of "opinions". What you did was slate the game 5 times with no argument or counterargument. Then you tell the "people who made this"(top right if you can be arsed) to go 'fuck themselves'

It has nothing to do with the fact you "say what you think blah blah blah" You just come across as a bit of a cock.

@36 And you've missed my point, a game doesn't have to be difficult in order to be considered good. The other elements are just as important, but I guess that the difficulty makes this game stand out.

But your previous comment pretty much said that if I'm not up for a challenge, then I don't like any RPG, or fantasy game in general, and it's not my genre of game.

This obviously is not true.

As for The Witcher 2, I'm still planning on getting that game once it gets a price cut. I have to save some money once the Triple A titles get released in the 4th quarter.

And for those interested in dark souls lore or are looking for walkthroughs , ,guides , item and boss analysis and general tips should check out Epicnamebro's youtube page good stuff !

@M1 Punk- The bit I don't get is why you even bothered to comment in the first place. You made it clear you don't like the game so why are you here? (Please don't answer)

Personally, the game kicked my ass and I liked it. I've recommended it to some of my friends who believe themselves to be "hardcore gamers" and some loved it while others reacted just like M1 Punk.

I simply like the fact that the game can be hard as nails but still sold well. My opinion is pretty simple, I don't care about casual, hardcore or pro gamers. If you like a game, play it, if not move on. No point in bitching about it over and over in a comments section. Makes you look silly.

@40 - But that's what made Demon Souls and Dark Souls so damn good. The fact it was so difficult. And don't try to say it doesn't have a story, because it does. Difference is...

Spoilers follow - it is not shoved into your face, you need to go out and find it. Solaire for example, he tells a story but you need to work to keep him alive and be there with him to find it out. The Furtive Pygmy was something you had to go out of your way to find out about, and even then you had to leave some of it to imagination. And most importantly, the imagination aspect. A lot of the fan base believe Solaire is actually the first born of Gywn. It's all speculation of course, but it's that kind of thing that makes a story so good. To me anyway. I love being kept on the edge, not knowing what is true, but always guessing. That's not even scratching the surface of the games story and lore. But why am I telling someone who couldn't give a fuck about the game? I don't know.

Anyway... Am I only allowed to comment on this article if I liked Dark Souls? So if I hated it, I shouldn't be allowed to share my opinion or thoughts? It only took me 30 seconds or so to do it, so why not?

Or maybe I'm just bored, trolling or desperate for attention. I'm glad that 2/3 of your comment is actually about the game itself instead of trying to be a smart ass.

@Akatsuki Sensor: You are so damn right with EVERYTHING you said. God bless you. Dark Souls is a game with full of mysteries..its just too fucking epic.

I love to play hard games, so when my friend told me about Dark Souls, i was very interested. I couldn`t stop thinking about it, so i bought it and i played it.

After 2 hours of gaming , i lost absolutely interest in any other RPG (Skyrim, Dragons Dogma...), i didn`t bought any other RPG after Dark Souls, because in my opinion ,its just the "King of RPGs".

This game has something which i can`t explain. The atmosphere in the game is so affecting. You feel yourself so lonely..(the fact you can`t make PARTY chat makes this feeling stronger) ...

I honour the creaters of Dark Souls , i have VERY much respect for them, because these days, game companies are creating easy games for casual gamers like M1 Punk ,so its not a suprise that he hates this game.

The developers of Dark Souls had the balls to bring out a hard game, in a market which is dominated by Casual Games.

This one won't stack. The reason Batman: AA stacked was because they added a large feature (3D). The only time new versions of the same game will stack in the same region is if something like that is added.

After taking about 9 months off, i created a new character... And the game gets easier ppl... The famous difficulty is mainly a first play thru experience ... Case in point... Capra and Sif. I didn't die at all this time. First character...lmao Capra killed him, maybe, a hundred times...
@#31. Yup i agree. The difficulty.is over hyped.. it,s a first playthru learning curve, thats all
@M1 Punk. ALOT of games/if not ALL are repetitive... And that can lead to boredom for any game for anyone. Also depends on ppls moods

LOL this is a great thread and argument...please keep it going.

OT: I tried the game and did not care for it. I am not a good enough gamer to play this game, and I have no problem saying that.

SWEET!! When I read about the PTD Edition coming out on the PC I was bummed because there was no word if it was coming to consoles.

I have to share with you that this game was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had playing video games in a VERY long time. The game was so dark and sinister that it pulled me into a 2 month long struggle of formulating strategies against bosses that handed me my ass dozens of times over. I would wake up in the earliest hours of the morning, turn on my xbox and clash against bosses because I had a fresh idea. The thrill of other players leaving messages scrawled in floors and seeing their ghosts made me feel not that I but WE were in this pitched battle in the midst of one of the hardest games I've ever played.

In conclusion I feel that this game gave me a sort of a Stockholm Syndrome. It preyed on my mind, tortured me, made me hate it with a dark passion, yet I always came back for more punishment because of a sick twisted love I had for inching slowly through the game.

Yes Bandai, this naughty boy needs another spanking.

Will the dlc bring new achievements? Not sure if I can cope with my "completed" status being taken from me. :3
