Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim's Hearthfire Add-on Announced, Dated, Priced and Trailered!
Written By
View author's profile

The rumours were true, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s latest add-on will be called Hearthfire.

Rather than the story and combat focus of the previous add-on, Dawnguard, Skyrim’s new DLC will be all about domesticity. You'll be able to purchase a piece of land, build your own house and customise it with kitchens, greenhouses, libraries, alchemy labs and trophy rooms.

Outside you'll be able to set up gardens, fish hatcheries and beehives in order to make resource collection a little easier. You can even hire a steward to do all the boring household stuff. In addition to this, Hearthfire will also allow you to adopt and raise children.

There’s more in the trailer below. Hearthfire heats up on September 4th and will cost 400 MSP.

oh wow, i really wanted to raise kids...in a game.

As much as I love skyrim this seems a little pointless, could have been added into the next full expansion pack instead and it would have been more welcome!!!

I remember when ESIV had 4 locations, where your char can call home. Each with its own side quest + interior stuff that could be purchased at the Imperial City. I wonder if Skyrim will have just 1 or more?

Well I like the idea of building your home, could it be a castle? Ex: Fighters Stronghold add-on ESIV?

I dunno if I'll bother with this without achievements. I prefer Oblivion to this to be honest, and I have most of the extra little expansion packs for Oblivion too so prefer to keep at that game.

When it says, "build your own home." As if I'm going to spend multiple hours constructing my own homes, brick by brick, wood by wood, stone by stone. OR will I be selecting from a list of house designs. Then purchase it, wait x amount of hours for it to build itself & go from there?

I love Skyrim, don't get me wrong -- but at 400 MSP, this smells a great deal like Horse Armor. Remember they'd allow you to purchase a customizable home in Oblivion for MSP? There weren't any achievements for doing so, it just made playing the game a little more convenient.

I really hope I'm wrong. I could use another two or three Skyrim expansions.

Adopt a child? How hard would it be to create something similar to Fable's family system...If done tastefully (i.e. not like Bioware games or the Witcher series) it won't raise your game rating...

When I saw this video on Youtube I got all excited because I thought that there would finally be an interesting Skyrim DLC which opens up a whole new environment in a nearby province but then I got really disappointed when I saw what this is actually about. This looks okay but I was really expecting more. For 400 though it isn't that bad of a price. I might buy it with the MS point I get off of Bing.

I'm torn. This is all very Fable meets Dark Cloud. While it is a nice distraction, the merits towards gameplay aren't that great. Plus what is the point of being able to fill a house with trophies if you cannot share the house with anyone else? Don't get me wrong, I'll shell out 400MSP as it is a really good deal for what you get, but I'll feel a little sad inside while playing it.

As these guys are probably working on the next Fallout game, lets hope they put something similar into that. However you arrive in Boston, collect things, build your own shelter/home etc.
Its bout time they did something like this, its an RPG so you wanna add as much realism as possible and if that means building a home, so be it. I dont own this game and won't till game of year edition as im a bum and have no job.

This is actualy already out on the pc version as a mod, and has had several variations for a couple of months, but for 400, it seems like a decent price, though depends on what the customication is like.
Wonder if there will be any quest lines added as well.

Well, as amazing as being able to build stuff in the game world is, it still isn't the shivering isles sized expansions we've been waiting for, the only updates are things that were from the bethesda gamejam, so are they doing something brilliant behind the scenes or just the stuff we can see in the gamejam.

I feel like Bethesda is just pulling our legs (and perhaps this content is indeed in the DLC) but previous rumors really hinted toward an undead DLC that was similar to Dawnguard. Nonetheless this still makes me very happy, as does the price!

@73 then don't buy it -_- Some people like to roleplay in rpgs....its the craziest thing. Clearly Skyrim/Fallout/rpgs in general aren't your kind of game if you think of your housing as a "storage unit". Others spend hours upon hours laying shit around their house all nice and neat like they really lived there >_>

I'd assume there are no achievements tied to this, and I'm still buying it anyways. Fantastic idea Bethesda.

The price is good. But I'm not gonna buy it. Dawnguard was a waste of money for me. Didn't enjoy it and won't go back to it. If I want to build my own house, I'll do that in Minecraft. Not that I think its a bad idea, its going to appeal to a lot of people. Just not for me. Praying the next dlc is going to be worth it.

I'd rather they fix the glitch stopping me from completing the thieve's guild questline, but this sounds like a cool add-on for $5.

I actually wanted something like this day one, I remember talking to a buddy and saying a trophy room would be cool. For five bucks it's pretty awesome. I kind of get the feeling that the success of Minecraft had alot to do with the inspiration of this add-on.

Content packs are just as welcome as Expansion packs and this is kind of cool.

Albiet everything I just saw I could download a couple mods and make it happen (although with less work the house would just be pre-built) but this is really cool for the console types and those who prefer not to use mods because they have some sort of superstition that'll break their game.

I think I'm going to have to uninstall killable children though if and when I decide to pick this Content Pack up. I'd feel bad if my adopted kid gets smashed by a Giant.

I was just talking about how being able to do exactly this would be awesome in Skyrim about a month or two ago online. I wonder if word got around to Bethesda somehow? I highly doubt it but that would be cool.

To help out a few people with questions or misconceptions, this is JUST a house mod for 400 MS points, no quests that we know of, certainly no new locations or anything.
What makes this so appealing for many people is that we're not just buying a new house, it is one we get to build ourselves. Now then, that doesn't mean we're going to be placing bricks etc, that would take a massive reworking of the game controls and interface. Instead, how this works is by allowing us to buy a plot of land, then build a house to our specifications from some pre-arranged options. It sounds little different to the normal houses, except we get to choose what rooms to add and quite possibly, where to add them to the house. Many players, myself included, like to Roleplay our characters, and my current one is a hunter who makes his way in the world purely living off the land, hunting, mining, gathering, and selling the proceeds in towns. The idea of being able to use those materials to build a house that suits my character is actually hugely exciting. Because THAT is the main draw for, that we can either send someone to buy them, or obtain the materials needing for construction ourselves. I expect a lot of people didn't really pay attention to this part, but we are able to craft items and tools and materials we need to build the houses ourselves, and these materials require raw materials like metals, wood, glass (actual glass, not the weapon material), straw (yep, they've been added to the game, it shows you in the trailer). what this essentially means is that for my Hunter, I get to build my very own shack to live and work out of, slowly acquiring the necessary materials to build a bigger and better home.

I get that this won't appeal to everyone, many people will prefer to just charge at the game and bash things, and that's fine, for you guys, this DLC isn't going to make any real difference for you, that's not a big deal. But for those of us who roleplay the game, or those of us who just like the idea of having a different gameplay objective than go here/kill that/find this, this is a fantastic piece of DLC.

Now, a few people have raised concerns over the size of the DLC, questioning it's quality as one of Bethesda's '3 sizeable DLC', well, I don't have any evidence to support this, but I don't for a second believe that this counts as one of those. Indeed, in the Bethblog, they just pass this off as 'something we thought you guys might like'. It's not a major piece of DLC, it's an add-on, a bitesized piece of content that is well priced (some of you may disagree, but I'll likely get hours of play time out of this, so yeah, it's worth it) and will tide people over between real story based DLC like Dawnguard. Personally I'm glad for it. Something like this will only take a samll handful of people to make, leaving the bulk of the staff assigned to DLC to work on the next full sized piece. This is exactly what I was hoping they would do, release good bitsized pieces of content between the main DLC. Bring on more of it, creature/monster packs, random quest packs, maybe a 'rebuild Helgen' DLC (we never did get rebuild Kvatch that everyone wanted) if this proves successful, as the principle of placing buildings, acquiring materials etc will remain essentially the same.

I'm just waiting to see how fucked up the programming of this house is. They already could barely handle getting working display cases/weapon racks, and missions that give you the keys to the house.

If it works fine, it's pretty badass. But... that's an nice sized "if" seeing as it's Bethesda.

My wish came true. I´ve allways wanted to build my own house in a RPG. RPG + creativity is a great combo. I hope there is enough freedom to place the furniture etc.

This looks awesome. I'll be picking this up for sure.

When people buy an app on their phone or tablet, how much entertainment do you get out of it? Maybe an hour or two for a $0.99 app. So if I can get five or more hours of entertainment out of this, I'll gladly shell out the five dollars. I'm pretty confident that I'll get more than five hours out of this. If you're not, then don't get it.

I saw the twitter link saying that this will have achievements. Which makes it all the better for me. ^^

Can't wait! It's really weird as before Dawnguard was released I said to my mate, 'I wish you could build your own house rather than buy one', and weirdly enough, they are going to release this dlc for only 400 mp as well!

This looks great, but I really really wish this had just been in the game from the get-go.

I haven't played Skyrim in a while and don't have the urge to after sinking 250+ hours into it, so I won't be playing it for a while.

Had this been in the game originally, I would've sunk probably 100+ hours alone into managing my house. But alas, I have other things to do right now.

Wow thanks for failing Bethesda, what happened to substantial dlc...this does not seem very substantial at all. Take dawngaurd for example it was ok but that is all, it was just ok. What happened to dlc's the size of shivering isles, the game feels like it has no replay factor anymore...so sad.
