Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Gamescom 2012: Call of Duty: Black Ops II Interview - John Rafacz on Multiplayer, CoD Fatigue and Beyond
Written By
View author's profile

Just in case you didn't know, Treyarch is back with its latest go at the Call of Duty franchise in a couple of months and its first direct CoD sequel in the shape of Black Ops II. Taking the series into the future for the first time, Black Ops II heads to 2025, bringing with it an array of funky technology and gadgets.

But how do you keep such a long-running franchise - that's arguably the victim of its own success - fresh and relevant in this day and age? We took some time out with Treyarch's Communications Director, John Rafacz to address the issue of Call of Duty fatigue and increasing cynicism towards the behemoth FPS series, multiplayer, zombies and more.

Check out our interview with Rafacz below. We had a few issues with the audio unfortunately, so you might want to crank the volume up a bit. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is out in November. For more, check out our hands-on multiplayer preview.

@4 - Tell me, what is stopping you from moving on? You don't need to play the games. Obviously people buy them, otherwise they wouldn't be making them would they?

OT - I always prefer the Treyarch games. I'll be getting both this and Halo 4. Can't wait for either ^_^

Treyarch should be the ones doing COD from the beginning. In all COD's they made, they improved them. In terms of graphics, stories and others.

While i've been a fan of the series since Modern Warfare and wouldnt have ever been introduced to the WW2 sub genre(which I love now)if not for World At War. Im done with the franchise for now. 8 player zombies? It' hard enough to get 4 people to work together. The zombie achievements became chores you had to do, not fun goals to accomplish.plus there was so much luck in getting the right situations/weapons. Fix that and i might consider it.
Besides there are just too many great games coming out this year and the beginning of next year. I dont need COD anymore.

Dishonored, Doom3 BFG, Halo4, Borderlands 2, Serious Sam 3 BFE thats just this year and is only the shooters im interested in. If we go into 2013 you got Bioshock 3, Metro:Last Light, Dead Space 3, Tomb Raider, Aliens Colonial Marines, Sniper Ghost warrior 2,Enemy Front(WW2 action/adventure).

Those are the ones I really want to play.

I like the approach that Treyarch is trying to make with the series, innovation and all. But the only thing that concerns me is that Lamia and Rafuil seem to believe with all their beings that COD is all about the "E-Sports" and that the more "competitive side of gaming" for the general audience is inbound for sure.
I mean not only is that a faulty dilemma on both ends, but do they actually not realize that they should probably work on making the franchise a bit "less hated" before they jump the guns on something that probably won't even be worthwhile? Honest to God, I don't give a shit about competitive gaming. (Much less if it's Call of Duty being played competitively.) And I've actually been playing the series for a few years now! Does Treyarch think it can subsidize on aging children and a few "pro teams"? (And yes, I realize that I sound like a complete idiotic asshole- but it just saddens me that even Treyarch still doesn't get the position that CoD is currently in, reputation-wise at least.)

Needless to say, I'm still waiting eagerly for November to come by- and I'll give the game a shot when it releases. :)

@6 i disagree with that, my opinion is that the 3 best cods were
1-cod 4 MW
2-cod 6 MW2
3-cod 2
all infinity ward, im not saying they were better games just that i had more fun playing them, also Cod 3 was one of the least enjoyable games i have ever played

I think the massive amount of Call of Duty angst was socially engineered by Infinity Ward's angry ex-leadership.

Not really. Still, all that bitter posting is getting old and silly. Like Madonna.

6: All the Call of Duty games made by IW were the better ones... Graphics haven't changed substantially from CoD2 to MW3 because there was no need; the game was already gorgeous. CoD3 looked like it belonged on the PS1. Not to mention, the entire franchise was Infinity Ward's brainchild. To say that Treyarch does Call of Duty better than Infinity Ward is me saying that I do a better Arnold Schwarzenegger impression than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As bad as I know MW3 was, it's still a step up from Black Ops, and it'll stay a step up from Black Ops II, because Treyarch's "ideas" are killing the franchise. They did Spider-Man well; they should stick to that.

I like Treyarch better. They listen to the community better(assuming Infinity Ward listens AT ALL). Their games are far more balanced. Their games are just more fun in general IMO. And I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited for Black Ops 2. It's probably my 5th or 6th most anticipated game. Primarily for zombies and campaign, but the multiplayer looks really fun too.

And if you don't like Call of Duty, then don't bother clicking the article. If you don't like it, don't buy it. And you won't have to deal with it.

@2 He means while they are bringing new stuff to the COD franchise and trying to make it feel fresh and new again. They still want it to feel like a COD game as well.

@14 That's your opinion, but your logic is flawed. Just because someone made it first doesn't mean everyone will feel they made it best. Number 6 feels treyarch does a better job, why are you trying to prove him wrrng it is his opinion.

@6 i disagree, in my opinion cod 3 was ok but not a great leap 2 and had a worse campaign, world at war was worse than 4 with the exception of zombies, black ops wasn't as good as mw2, okso mw3 was worse than black ops but that because infinity ward essentially broke up so had no one working on it taking all that into account the only hthing i'd say trayarch do better that IW was having zombies, the rest of the game is average at best

You know, I have played all the call of duty games, from 2-MW3, but I am not excited about Black Ops 2 at all. Even the inevitable MW4 I don't think I will be excited for. However, many people dont like the Cod series because the games are too similar. My problem with the last two call of dutys is that they didn't let you choose how to play, instead the gave you the choice to play a certain way, or suck. For example, in MW2, many of the maps you could play many different ways, and if you were remotely good, you could be successful. However, in MW3, there is not one map where you can do long-distance sniping, the maps are just too cluttered. Even with a semi long range assault rifle, it is difficult. The only way to be really good at that game seems to buy with close range weapons, which I don't use. I am not on this to bash call of duty, I just want other people to compare their opinions of the late call of duty games to how I feel toward the franchise.

My opinions..
My most favorite to least

Cod4
Mw2
Black Ops
WaW
Mw3

Personally I think Infinity Ward WAS good. But with Mw3 being the way it is, I really hope black ops 2 pulls it off.

#26 There plenty games coming this fall/winter like Hitman: Absolution, Resident Evil 6, Assassin's Creed III, Borderlands 2, Doom 3: BFG Edition, Dishonored and load more games not only Halo 4 or Black Ops 2 (both not only important titles to watch out for!!). My opinion Hitman: Absolution, Resident Evil 6 and Borderlands 2 is my top of all. :)

i guess the point of commenting on this article is to show off how much we know about what games are coming out and when...

a lot of the comments are just like...

"lots of better games coming out, like, (list known games here)"...

im cutting back on gaming this year, i'm sticking with mostly rentals (to save money) but after a year without cod, im hoping this one will be new and "refreshing"

of course i expect the game to be the same as the rest, but Call of Duty is the only game i can for sure get atleast 2 fun matches in everyday/anyday. I still think the game is "lackluster" and could do more, but the game "as-is" is alright as long as you only expect to play 2-5 matches everyday for 6 months.

I'm surprised i am thinking this way since i was Infuriated with MW3.. i was so tired of the "same-old" but i have to be honest, a year without call of duty makes for some expensive gaming... I spent alot of money on "replacement" games, only to find joy in battlefield 3 (which is a better franchise) but i could be on BF3 for 2 hours and still not have a "decent" or "fun" match... alot of the time im just 5-3 or 7-3 (k/d) after a 20-30 minute match.

wall of text, i know, but to sum it all up....

I am looking forward to this years call of duty after a full year without it.. but most of all, im excited for Halo 4.

imo CoD hasn't been "fair" since CoD3, and I know that game gets a lot of hate, but I loved it. Biggest maps in CoD history, last CoD with no perks/killstreaks and everyone was on equal footing. If you sniped, you learned how to keep your distance, unlike quickscoping in the past few CoDs (which is retarded). If you used an LMG, you learned how to prone yourself in the right situations. If you used an assault rifle, you learned how to balance mid to far ranged combat scenarios. If you used an SMG or shotgun, you learned how to pick your moments and strike. There's no freaking balance in CoD anymore and anyone that picks MW2 or 3 over CoD2 and 3 (imo, the best 2 in the series, 4 being not too far behind), is an idiot. I like balance in my shooters, which is why I'm a Treyarch fan now. IW is dead. Halo 4 and Black Ops 2 gonna be hot, baby!

Each game has its own set of pros and cons. Halo 4 is good for what it is, just like BLOPS2 is good for what it is, and so on.

People build up expectations for a game, using the previous title as a basis for their expectation, which isn't really fair on the new game. Sure, you could look at BLOPS2 as "another CoD game," and right there you are making a false assumption. I think the game is going to be good in itself, it just happens to be called CoD.

After watching gameplays and such i dont feel the hype, it looks absolutely retard with plenty of "fucking 1shotted AGAIN" situations. Wasnt a big fan of BO and if it wasnt for theatre in mw3 and competition in the fps genre i would play something else.

Ill go with Halo 4 and play this later i guess

Can't wait for this game, its gonna be the best, most innovative cod to date. Zombies will be phenominal and the mp looks so good I might actually even consider playing it for once.

in all honesty though i can hate on the CoD franchise cause i have bought every single game since CoD2, the CoD games are getting fucking retarded,

whats next " CALL of DUTY: HALO EDITION! " leave war games to guys who actually evolve the game such as the Battlefield/MOH games i mean fuck even in those games at least when i blast a rocket at a house guess what happens?" aims SMAW.....*FIRES ROCKET* .......*momentary pause* BOOOOOOOOM!!!!! *me* ' oh shit...there was a enemy behind that wall!?...sweet :D" to hwere CoD you can literally have a rockter smash the ground and explode 3 feet next to a guys and he walk out of the explosion like the fucking terminator and shoot you with a pistol and yet you fall over dead.

also about the sniper part where hes right on the leg....yea that prooves my point and every other guys point who think CoD dont fix jack shit, oh and not to mention those 'got to be loved' moments where you watch a kill cam and the guys aimer is like this * X = you O = other guys aimer * (...O....X.....) and yet somehow his 1 round is the size of a 5 megaton bomb being shot at you, gotta love it

anyway thats my rant im done with cod moving on to better things like MOH got that sheet on preorder hahah

@35, if you like BF3... go play it, and leave COD alone. Thats the thing about BF ppl, i always see them on cod articles talking about "their" game, but rarely do "cod guys" go to BF3 and talk about how COD is better.

Like i said in my original comment (@29), looking for other games to replace the Call of Duty military shooter experience can be extremely expensive. I tried a number of online games over the past year since i skipped out on Call of Duty last year (i bought it/traded it in fast because it "sucked") Battlefield 3 is the game i settled on and am now a premium member.. While i agree it is a better franchise (way more innovative) they're way different. I can play 3 Hours and not have a "fun" match... after a year without call of duty and strictly battlefield, im sure you'll be itching for call of duty when next year's installment comes along.

..maybe im wrong, but that is exactly how it worked for me... I'm not going crazy for call of duty, but i look at the new MOH trailer and thing "mehh" and see the call of duty trailer and think "mehh" but the "mehh" for call of duty is more enthusiastic because it looks different from what i've been playing (battlefield 3).

@36 I'm neither a BF or CoD fan so since I can be impartial I can say that I've seen just as many "CoD people" bashing BF or talking about CoD in BF articles as you get "BF people" bashing CoD or talking about BF in CoD articles. True fans of either don't need to bash or convince other people that 'their' game is better.

34: I played the demo for CoD2 like three years ago. There hasn't been a need to play it again since; it's not a bad game but CoD4 was better. I'd still rather play CoD2 than Black Ops 2. Treyarch is so fucking devoid of originality. They have a bunch of "unique" ideas, and they're all either stolen without credit, or fucking terrible. You can choose to replace any slot with anything else? Oh, yeah. I definitely look forward to the guy who'll be replacing a normal, sane human setup with an RPG launcher and nine frags. That should be fun!

This game lost me at its inception. Now that I've watching preview videos... I couldn't be further from it. Y'all go out and make your fucking terrible purchase.

By the way, 40, you lost ALL credibility when you placed World at War above the original Modern Warfare. That game had fucking TANKS, which was probably the most colossal blunder of the entire Call of Duty franchise.

Has no-one watched this video fully or something? For those who haven't, he said that there will be zombie info coming in the next couple of weeks :) COD's strong suit has always been about the multiplayer for me anyway. Loving what Treyarch have done with the game, i reckon this may change people's minds about this franchise (i doubt it though).
