If you thought Final Fantasy XIII ended with its sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2, it turns out you were wrong. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the next entry in the series and is an entirely new game, rather than a continuation of FF XIII-2. As the title suggests, it'll see Lightning making a comeback for her final chapter in the FF XIII saga.
Beginning with 13 days left on the Doomsday Clock leading up to the end of the world, the pink-haired protagonist finds herself using transforming weapons in battle, and she'll apparently be much stronger than she has been in the previous two games. Lightning Returns: FF XIII is set on a chain of four islands called Navus Partus, and you'll be able to use a monorail to get around.
Exploration will take centre-stage this time around too, with a day-night cycle affecting the kind of NPCs you encounter and interact with. As well as transforming weapons, Lightning will also have a massive wardrobe packed full of costumes. Check out the announcement trailer below and a nice piece of artwork, courtesy of AGB. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is due out in 2013.
